1 In the same way, you wives should be obedient to your husbands. Then if there are some husbandswho do not believe the Word, they may find themselves won over, without a word spoken, by the way their wivesbehave,	1 - Similmente anche le donne sian soggette ai loro mariti, affinchè, anche se alcuni non credono alla parola siano guadagnati, senza la parola, dalla condotta esemplare delle loro mogli,
2 when they see the reverence and purity of your way of life.	2 poichè considereranno la vostra condotta casta e rispettosa.
3 Your adornment should be not an exterior one, consisting of braided hair or gold jewellery or fineclothing,	3 L'ornamento delle mogli non sia all'esterno, come l'acconciatura dei capelli, la moltitudine dei gioielli o lo sfoggio di vesti diverse;
4 but the interior disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and peacefulspirit, so precious in the sight of God.	4 sia invece l'interiore, il cuore, [l'ornamento] incorruttibile d'uno spirito tranquillo e modesto, che è tanto prezioso agli occhi di Dio.
5 That was how the holy women of the past dressed themselves attractively -- they hoped in God andwere submissive to their husbands;	5 Così, di fatto, una volta si adornavano le sante donne che speravano in Dio, stando soggette ai loro mariti,
6 like Sarah, who was obedient to Abraham, and cal ed him her lord. You are now her children, as longas you live good lives free from fear and worry.	6 come Sara, che ubbidiva ad Abramo, chiamandolo «signore»; [quella Sara] della quale voi siete figliuole se fate il bene senza lasciarvi sbigottire da qualsiasi spavento.
7 In the same way, husbands must always treat their wives with consideration in their life together,respecting a woman as one who, though she may be the weaker partner, is equal y an heir to the generous giftof life. This wil prevent anything from coming in the way of your prayers.	7 E anche voi, o mariti, convivete con saggezza con le mogli e rendete loro onore come a vaso più fragile, essendo anche le donne coeredi della grazia della vita; affinchè le vostre orazioni non abbiano da essere impedite.
8 Final y: you should al agree among yourselves and be sympathetic; love the brothers, havecompassion and be self-effacing.	8 Insomma [siate] tutti concordi, compassionevoli, amanti dei fratelli, misericordiosi, modesti, umili;
9 Never repay one wrong with another, or one abusive word with another; instead, repay with a blessing.That is what you are cal ed to do, so that you inherit a blessing.	9 non rendete male per male, nè maledizione per maledizione; ma invece benedite, perchè a questo siete stati chiamati: a possedere in eredità la benedizione.
10 For Who among you delights in life, longs for time to enjoy prosperity? Guard your tongue from evil,your lips from any breath of deceit.	10 Poichè chi vuol amare la vita e vedere giorni beati, raffreni la sua lingua dal male e le sue labbra non parlino inganno.
11 Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.	11 Schivi il male e faccia il bene, cerchi la pace e le vada dietro;
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the upright, his ear turned to their cry. But the Lord's face is setagainst those who do evil.	12 perchè gli occhi del Signore sono sopra i giusti e le sue orecchie [attente] alle loro orazioni; ma la faccia del Signore sta contro coloro che fanno il male.
13 No one can hurt you if you are determined to do only what is right;	13 E chi potrà farvi del male, se sarete zelanti del bene?
14 and blessed are you if you have to suffer for being upright. Have no dread of them; have no fear.	14 Ma anche se aveste a soffrire qualcosa per la giustizia, beati voi! Nessuna loro minaccia vi sgomenti e vi conturbi.
15 Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for peoplewho ask you the reason for the hope that you have.	15 Ma benedite nei vostri cuori Cristo Signore, pronti sempre a dar soddisfazione a chiunque vi domandi ragione della speranza che è in voi;
16 But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your goodbehaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations.	16 ma [ciò farete] con modestia e rispetto, forti della vostra buona coscienza, in guisa che quando sparlano di voi, rimangano confusi quelli che calunniano la vostra buona condotta in Cristo.
17 And if it is the wil of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doingwrong.	17 Poichè è meglio che soffriate (se tale è la volontà di Dio) facendo il bene, che facendo il male;
18 Christ himself died once and for al for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. Inthe body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life,	18 perchè anche Cristo è morto una volta per i nostri peccati, - Egli giusto per gli ingiusti, - per offrire voi a Dio; messo a morte quanto alla carne, ma vivificato per lo Spirito.
19 and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison.	19 Nel quale [Spirito] andò a predicare anche a quelli spiriti che erano in carcere,
20 They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah's time when theark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water.	20 i quali eran stati una volta increduli, allorchè la pazienza di Dio stava aspettando ai giorni di Noè, mentre si fabbricava l'arca, nella quale pochi, cioè otto anime, scamparono dall'acqua.
21 It is the baptism corresponding to this water which saves you now -- not the washing off of physical dirtbut the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,	21 Figura codesta di quel battesimo che ora vi salva, - non ripulimento delle sozzure della carne, ma contratto di buona coscienza fatto con Dio, - per mezzo della risurrezione di Gesù Cristo,
22 who has entered heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels, ruling forces and powers subject tohim.	22 il quale sta alla destra di Dio Padre, dopo aver ingoiata la morte perchè noi diventassimo eredi della vita eterna. Egli, andato in cielo, si è assoggettati gli angeli, le Potestà e le Virtù.
