1 In the same way, you wives should be obedient to your husbands. Then if there are some husbandswho do not believe the Word, they may find themselves won over, without a word spoken, by the way their wivesbehave,	1 Similmente anche le donne sian soggette a' loro mariti: anche perché se alcuni non credono alla parola, siano guadagnati senza la parola dai portamenti delle mogli,
2 when they see the reverence and purity of your way of life.	2 Considerando quegli (insieme) colla riverenza la casta vostra condotta.
3 Your adornment should be not an exterior one, consisting of braided hair or gold jewellery or fineclothing,	3 Delle quali l'ornato non sia al di fuori l'acconciatura de' capelli, o l'oro, che si mettano dattorno, o le vestimenta, onde si ammantino:
4 but the interior disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and peacefulspirit, so precious in the sight of God.	4 Ma quell'uomo ascoso del cuore con quello, che non si corrompe, Spirito tranquillo, e modesto, che è cosa preziosa nel cospetto di Dio.
5 That was how the holy women of the past dressed themselves attractively -- they hoped in God andwere submissive to their husbands;	5 Imperocché così una volta anche le donne sante, che in Dio speravano, sì adornavano, stando soggette a' loro mariti.
6 like Sarah, who was obedient to Abraham, and cal ed him her lord. You are now her children, as longas you live good lives free from fear and worry.	6 Come Sara era ubbidiente ad Abramo, chiamandolo signore: della quale voi siete figliuole, operando il bene, e non essendo sbigottite da qualsisia spavento.
7 In the same way, husbands must always treat their wives with consideration in their life together,respecting a woman as one who, though she may be the weaker partner, is equal y an heir to the generous giftof life. This wil prevent anything from coming in the way of your prayers.	7 Voi, mariti, parimente convivete con saggezza con le mogli, e come ad arnese più fragile rendete onore, ed anche come a coeredi della grazia di vita affinchè impedite non siano le vostre orazioni.
8 Final y: you should al agree among yourselves and be sympathetic; love the brothers, havecompassion and be self-effacing.	8 Finalmente tutti unanimi, compassionevoli, amanti de' fratelli, misericordiosi, modesti, umili:
9 Never repay one wrong with another, or one abusive word with another; instead, repay with a blessing.That is what you are cal ed to do, so that you inherit a blessing.	9 Non rendendo male per male, né maledizione per maledizione, ma pel contrario benedicendo: imperocché a questo siete stati chiamati, affinchè abbiate in retaggio la benedizione.
10 For Who among you delights in life, longs for time to enjoy prosperity? Guard your tongue from evil,your lips from any breath of deceit.	10 Chi adunque vuole, ed ama la vita, e di vedere de' giorni beati, raffreni la sua lingua dal male, e le labbra di lui non parlino inganno.
11 Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.	11 Schivi il male, e faccia il bene: cerchi la pace, e le vada dietro:
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the upright, his ear turned to their cry. But the Lord's face is setagainst those who do evil.	12 Dappoiché gli occhi del Signore sopra de' giusti, e le orecchie di lui alle loro orazioni: ma la faccia di Dio contro di coloro che mal fanno.
13 No one can hurt you if you are determined to do only what is right;	13 E chi è, che a voi noccia se sarete zelanti del bene?
14 and blessed are you if you have to suffer for being upright. Have no dread of them; have no fear.	14 Ma di più se alcuna cosa patite per la giustizia, beati voi. Non paventate però gli spauracchi di coloro, e non vi turbate.
15 Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for peoplewho ask you the reason for the hope that you have.	15 Ma benedite ne' vostri cuori Cristo Signore, pronti sempre a dar satisfazione a chiunque vi domandi ragione della speranza, che avete dentro di voi:
16 But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your goodbehaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations.	16 Ma con modestia, e rispetto, conservando buona coscienza: onde invece che sparlan di voi, rimangano confusi quegli, che intaccano la buona vostra maniera di vivere secondo Cristo.
17 And if it is the wil of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doingwrong.	17 Imperocché è meglio il patire (se cosi piaccia al voler di Dio) ben facendo, che operando male:
18 Christ himself died once and for al for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. Inthe body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life,	18 Conciossiachè anche Cristo una volta pei peccati nostri morì, il giusto pegli ingiusti, affine di offerir noi a Dio, essendo stato messo a morte secondo la carne, vivificato poi per lo Spirito.
19 and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison.	19 Pel quale eziandio andò a predicare a quegli spiriti, che erano in carcere:
20 They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah's time when theark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water.	20 I quali erano stati una volta increduli, allorché la pazienza di Dio stava aspettando ne' giorni di Noè, mentre fabbricavasi l'arca: nella quale pochi, cioè otto anime si salvaron sopra l'acqua.
21 It is the baptism corresponding to this water which saves you now -- not the washing off of physical dirtbut the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,	21 Alla qual cosa corrisponde adesso quel battesimo, che vi salva (non ripulimento delle sozzure della carne, ma contratto di buona coscienza fatto con Dio) per mezzo della risurrezione di Gesù Cristo,
22 who has entered heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels, ruling forces and powers subject tohim.	22 Il quale sta alla destra di Dio, ingoiata avendo la morte, perché noi diventassimo eredi dalla vita eterna: essendo andato al cielo, soggettati a se gli Angeli, e le potestà, e le vertudi.
