NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Rid yourselves, then, of al spite, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and carping criticism.	1 Deponendo dunque ogni cattiveria, ogni inganno, le ipocrisie, le invidie e ogni forma di maldicenza,
2 Like new-born babies al your longing should be for milk -- the unadulterated spiritual milk -- which willhelp you to grow up to salvation,	2 come bambini neonati anelate al latte spirituale e genuino, affinché per mezzo di esso cresciate in vista della salvezza:
3 at any rate if you have tasted that the Lord is good .	3 dato che avete gustato quanto è amabile il Signore.
4 He is the living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him; set yourselvesclose to him	4 Avvicinandovi a lui, la pietra vivente scartata dagli uomini ma scelta da Dio e di valore,
5 so that you, too, may be living stones making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer the spiritualsacrifices made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.	5 siete costruiti anche voi come pietre viventi in edificio spirituale per formare un organismo sacerdotale santo, che offra sacrifici spirituali bene accetti a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.
6 As scripture says: Now I am laying a stone in Zion, a chosen, precious cornerstone and no one whorelies on this wil be brought to disgrace.	6 Per questo si trova nella Scrittura: Ecco, pongo in Sion una pietra scelta, angolare, di valore, e chi crede in essa non rimarrà confuso.
7 To you believers it brings honour. But for unbelievers, it is rather a stone which the builders rejectedthat became a cornerstone,	7 Il valore quindi è per voi che credete; per coloro che non credono, la pietra scartata dai costruttori è diventata la pietra angolare,
8 a stumbling stone, a rock to trip people up. They stumble over it because they do not believe in theWord; it was the fate in store for them.	8 sasso d'inciampo e pietra di scandalo. Essi inciampano disobbedendo alla parola e a questo inciampo sono destinati.
9 But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession tosing the praises of God who cal ed you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.	9 Ma voi siete una stirpe scelta, un sacerdozio regale, un popolo santo, un popolo destinato a essere posseduto da Dio, così da annunziare pubblicamente le opere degne di colui che dalle tenebre vi chiamò alla sua luce meravigliosa,
10 Once you were a non-people and now you are the People of God; once you were outside his pity; nowyou have received pity.	10 voi che un tempo eravate non-popolo, ora invece siete popolo di Dio, eravate non beneficati dalla bontà divina, ora invece siete beneficati.
11 I urge you, my dear friends, as strangers and nomads, to keep yourselves free from the disorderednatural inclinations that attack the soul.	11 Carissimi, vi esorto affinché, in qualità di pellegrini e ospiti sulla terra, vi asteniate dagli impulsi passionali della carne, che combattono contro l'anima.
12 Always behave honourably among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives youlead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for the things which now make them denounceyou as criminals.	12 La vostra condotta in mezzo ai pagani sia buona, in modo che, mentre essi sparlano di voi come malfattori, osservando attentamente glorifichino Dio in forza delle vostre opere buone, nel giorno della sua visita.
13 For the sake of the Lord, accept the authority of every human institution: the emperor, as the supremeauthority,	13 Sottomettetevi a ogni istituzione umana in grazia del Signore, sia all'imperatore, per la sua autorità suprema,
14 and the governors as commissioned by him to punish criminals and praise those who do good.	14 sia ai governatori, perché sono inviati da lui per punire i malfattori e a lode di chi opera il bene.
15 It is God's will that by your good deeds you should silence the ignorant talk of fools.	15 Poiché questo è ciò che Dio vuole: compiendo il bene, voi dovete chiudere la bocca all'ignoranza degli uomini stolti.
16 You are slaves of no one except God, so behave like free people, and never use your freedom as acover for wickedness.	16 Perché, sì, siete liberi, ma non servitevi della vostra libertà come di un paravento per il male; al contrario, agite come schiavi di Dio.
17 Have respect for everyone and love for your fel ow-believers; fear God and honour the emperor.	17 Rispettate tutti, amate i fratelli, abbiate il senso di Dio, rispettate l'imperatore.
18 Slaves, you should obey your masters respectful y, not only those who are kind and reasonable butalso those who are difficult to please.	18 Voi, schiavi domestici, siate sottomessi, con tutto il senso di Dio, ai padroni, non solo a quelli onesti e comprensivi, ma anche a quelli che sono perversi.
19 You see, there is merit if, in awareness of God, you put up with the pains of undeserved punishment;	19 Questo infatti è un titolo di benevolenza divina: sopportare dolori in base alla consapevolezza che uno ha di Dio, soffrendo ingiustamente.
20 but what glory is there in putting up with a beating after you have done something wrong? The merit inthe sight of God is in putting up with it patiently when you are punished for doing your duty.	20 Che gloria infatti, se voi, comportandovi male e maltrattati per questo, resistete con costanza? Ma se, facendo il bene e soffrendo per questo, resistete con costanza, questo è un titolo di benemerenza presso Dio.
21 This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for youto fol ow in his steps.	21 A questo infatti siete stati chiamati, poiché Cristo soffrì per voi, lasciando a voi un modello, così che voi seguiate le sue orme:
22 He had done nothing wrong, and had spoken no deceit.	22 egli non commise peccato né fu trovato inganno sulla sua bocca;
23 He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults; when he was suffering he made no threats but puthis trust in the upright judge.	23 insultato, non restituiva l'insulto; soffrendo, non minacciava, ma si affidava a Colui che giudica rettamente.
24 He was bearing our sins in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our sins and live foruprightness; through his bruises you have been healed.	24 Egli prese su di sé i nostri peccati e li portò nel suo corpo sulla croce, affinché, venendo meno ai peccati, viviamo per la rettitudine morale; per le percosse da lui ricevute foste guariti.
25 You had gone astray like sheep but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of yoursouls.	25 Eravate infatti sbandati come pecore, ma ora siete ritornati al pastore che vigila sulle anime vostre.
