1 Rid yourselves, then, of al spite, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and carping criticism.	1 Per la qual cosa deposta ogni malizia, e ogni frode, e le finzioni, e le invidie, e tutte le detrazioni,
2 Like new-born babies al your longing should be for milk -- the unadulterated spiritual milk -- which willhelp you to grow up to salvation,	2 Come bambini di fresco nati bramate il latte spirituale sincero; affinchè per esso cresciate a salute:
3 at any rate if you have tasted that the Lord is good .	3 Se pure gustato avete, come è dolce il Signore.
4 He is the living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him; set yourselvesclose to him	4 A cui accostandovi pietra viva, rigettata dagli uomini, ma eletta, e onorata da Dio:
5 so that you, too, may be living stones making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer the spiritualsacrifices made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.	5 Voi pure come pietre vive siete edificati sopra di lui, casa spirituale, sacerdozio santo per offerire vittime spirituali, gradite a Dio per Gesù Cristo.
6 As scripture says: Now I am laying a stone in Zion, a chosen, precious cornerstone and no one whorelies on this wil be brought to disgrace.	6 Per la qual cosa si ha nella scrittura: ecco che io pongo in Sion una pietra principale, angolare, eletta, preziosa: e chi in lei crederà, non rimarrà confuso.
7 To you believers it brings honour. But for unbelievers, it is rather a stone which the builders rejectedthat became a cornerstone,	7 Per voi adunque, che credete, ell' è di onore: ma per quei, che non credono, ella è la pietra rigettata da coloro, che fabbricavano: questa è divenuta testata dell'angolo:
8 a stumbling stone, a rock to trip people up. They stumble over it because they do not believe in theWord; it was the fate in store for them.	8 E pietra d'inciampo, e pietra di scandalo per costoro, che urtano nella parola, e non credono, al che furon pur ordinati.
9 But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession tosing the praises of God who cal ed you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.	9 Ma voi stirpe eletta, sacerdozio regale, gente santa, popolo di acquisto: affinchè esaltiate le virtù di lui, che dalle tenebre vi chiamò all'ammirabil sua luce.
10 Once you were a non-people and now you are the People of God; once you were outside his pity; nowyou have received pity.	10 I quali una volta non popolo, ma ora popolo di Dio: i quali non fatti partecipi di misericordia, ora poi fatti partecipi della misericordia.
11 I urge you, my dear friends, as strangers and nomads, to keep yourselves free from the disorderednatural inclinations that attack the soul.	11 Carissimi, io vi scongiuro, che come forestieri, e pellegrini vi guardiate dai desiderj carnali, che militan contro dell'anima,
12 Always behave honourably among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives youlead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for the things which now make them denounceyou as criminals.	12 Vivendo bene tralle genti: affinchè laddove sparlan di voi come di uomini di mal affare, considerando le vostre buone opere, glorifichino Dio nel dì, in cui li visiterà.
13 For the sake of the Lord, accept the authority of every human institution: the emperor, as the supremeauthority,	13 Siate adunque per riguardo a Dio soggetti ad ogni uomo creato: tanto al Re, come sopra di tutti;
14 and the governors as commissioned by him to punish criminals and praise those who do good.	14 Quanto ai presidi come spedili da lui per far vendetta de' malfattori, e per onorare i buoni:
15 It is God's will that by your good deeds you should silence the ignorant talk of fools.	15 Perché tale è la volontà di Dio, che ben facendo chiudiate la bocca alla ignoranza degli uomini stolti:
16 You are slaves of no one except God, so behave like free people, and never use your freedom as acover for wickedness.	16 Come liberi, e non quasi tenendo la libertà per velame della malizia, ma come servi di Dio.
17 Have respect for everyone and love for your fel ow-believers; fear God and honour the emperor.	17 Rispettate tutti: amate i fratelli? temete Dio: rendete onore al Re.
18 Slaves, you should obey your masters respectful y, not only those who are kind and reasonable butalso those who are difficult to please.	18 Servi, siate soggetti ai padroni con ogni timore, non solo ai buoni, e modesti, ma anche agl' indiscreti.
19 You see, there is merit if, in awareness of God, you put up with the pains of undeserved punishment;	19 Imperocché è cosa di merito, se per riflesso a Dio uno sopporta molestie, patendo ingiustamente.
20 but what glory is there in putting up with a beating after you have done something wrong? The merit inthe sight of God is in putting up with it patiently when you are punished for doing your duty.	20 Imperocché qual onore è egli, se peccando, ed essendo puniti, patite? Ma se bene operando, e patendo, soffrite in pazienza: questo è il merito dinanzi a Dio.
21 This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for youto fol ow in his steps.	21 Imperocché a questo siete stati chiamati: dappoiché anche Cristo patì per noi, lasciando a voi l'esempio, affinchè le vestigia di lui seguitiate:
22 He had done nothing wrong, and had spoken no deceit.	22 Il quale non fè peccato, né frode trovossi nella sua bocca:
23 He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults; when he was suffering he made no threats but puthis trust in the upright judge.	23 Il quale venendo maledetto, non malediceva: strapazzato non minacciava: ma si rimetteva nelle mani dì chi ingiustamente lo giudicava:
24 He was bearing our sins in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our sins and live foruprightness; through his bruises you have been healed.	24 Il quale i peccati nostri portò egli stesso sul proprio corpo sopra del regno (affinchè morti al peccato, viviamo alla giustizia) per le lividure del quale siete stati sanati.
25 You had gone astray like sheep but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of yoursouls.	25 Imperocché eravate come pecore? sbandate, ma vi siete adesso convertiti al pastore, e vescovo delle anime vostre.
