1 Only a few of you, my brothers, should be teachers, bearing in mind that we shal receive a stricterjudgement.	1 Vogliate esser molti a far da maestri, fratelli miei, sapendo che vi addossate più severo giudizio.
2 For we all trip up in many ways. Someone who does not trip up in speech has reached perfection andis able to keep the whole body on a tight rein.	2 Imperocché in molte cose tutti inciampiamo. Chi non inciampa nel discorrere: questi è un uomo perfetto, capace eziandio di regger con freno tutto quanto il corpo.
3 Once we put a bit in the horse's mouth, to make it do what we want, we have the whole animal underour control.	3 E se noi mettiamo a' cavalli il freno in bocca, perché ci siano ubbidienti, raggiriamo ancora tutto il loro corpo.
4 Or think of ships: no matter how big they are, even if a gale is driving them, they are directed by a tinyrudder wherever the whim of the helmsman decides.	4 Ecco come le navi, sendo grandi, e spinte da' venti gagliardi, sono voltate qua, e li da un piccolo timone, dovunque ordini il movimento di chi lo governa.
5 So the tongue is only a tiny part of the body, but its boasts are great. Think how smal a flame can setfire to a huge forest;	5 Così pure la lingua è un picciol membro, e di gran cose si vanta. Ecco quanto piccol fuoco quanto gran selva incendia!
6 The tongue is a flame too. Among al the parts of the body, the tongue is a whole wicked world: itinfects the whole body; catching fire itself from hel , it sets fire to the whole wheel of creation.	6 E la lingua è un fuoco, un mondo di iniquità. La lingua è posta tra le nostre membra, e contamina tutto il corpo, ed essendo accesa dall'inferno, la ruota del nostro vivere accende.
7 Wild animals and birds, reptiles and fish of every kind can al be tamed, and have been tamed, byhumans;	7 Imperocché tutte le specie di bestie, e di volatili, e di serpenti, e di altri (animali) si domano, e sono state domate dall'umana virtù:
8 but nobody can tame the tongue -- it is a pest that wil not keep stil , ful of deadly poison.	8 Ma la lingua nissun uomo può domarla: male, che non può affrenarsi, piena di mortal veleno.
9 We use it to bless the Lord and Father, but we also use it to curse people who are made in God'simage:	9 Con essa benediciamo Dio, e Padre: e con essa malediciamo gli uomini, che son fatti ad immagine di Dio.
10 the blessing and curse come out of the same mouth. My brothers, this must be wrong-	10 Dalla stessa bocca esce la benedizione, e la maledizione. Non deve andar così la bisogna, fratelli miei.
11 does any water supply give a flow of fresh water and salt water out of the same pipe?	11 Forse che la fontana dallo stesso buco getta acqua dolce, ed amara?
12 Can a fig tree yield olives, my brothers, or a vine yield figs? No more can sea water yield fresh water.	12 Può forse, fratelli miei, il fico dar uve, o la vite de' fichi? Così nemmen l'acqua salata può farne della dolce.
13 Anyone who is wise or understanding among you should from a good life give evidence of deeds donein the gentleness of wisdom.	13 Chi è saggio, e scienziato tra di voi? Faccia egli vedere mediate la buona vita le opere sue fatte con mansuetudine propria della saggezza.
14 But if at heart you have the bitterness of jealousy, or selfish ambition, do not be boastful or hide thetruth with lies;	14 Che se avete uno zelo amaro, e delle dissensioni ne' vostri cuori: non vogliate gloriarvi, e mentire contro la verità.
15 this is not the wisdom that comes from above, but earthly, human and devilish.	15 Imperocché non è questa una sapienza, che scenda di colassù: ma terrena, animalesca, da demonj.
16 Wherever there are jealousy and ambition, there are also disharmony and wickedness of every kind;	16 Imperocché dove è tale zelo, e dissensione: ivi scompiglio, e ogni opera prava.
17 whereas the wisdom that comes down from above is essential y something pure; it is also peaceable,kindly and considerate; it is ful of mercy and shows itself by doing good; nor is there any trace of partiality orhypocrisy in it.	17 Ma la sapienza di lassù primieramente è pura, di poi pacifica, modesta,arrendevole, fa a modo de' buoni, è piena di misericordia, e di buoni frutti, aliena dal criticare, e dalla ipocrisia:
18 The peace sown by peacemakers brings a harvest of justice.	18 Or il frutto della giustizia si semina nella pace da coloro, che han cura della pace.
