1 From Paul, servant of God, an apostle of Jesus Christ to bring those whom God has chosen to faith andto the knowledge of the truth that leads to true religion,	1 - Paolo, servo di Dio, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per la fede degli eletti di Dio e per il riconoscimento della verità, che è secondo la pietà,
2 and to give them the hope of the eternal life that was promised so long ago by God. He does not lie	2 e si fonda sulla speranza della vita eterna, la quale promise Iddio infallibile prima che cominciassero i secoli,
3 and so, in due time, he made known his message by a proclamation which was entrusted to me by thecommand of God our Saviour.	3 e a tempo opportuno manifestò la sua parola nella predicazione, di cui io fui incaricato per ordine di Dio Salvatore nostro,
4 To Titus, true child of mine in the faith that we share. Grace and peace from God the Father and fromChrist Jesus our Saviour.	4 a Tito diletto figlio mio secondo la fede comune, grazia e pace da Dio Padre e da Cristo Gesù nostro Salvatore.
5 The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to organise everything that stil had to be done andappoint elders in every town, in the way that I told you,	5 Per questo appunto t'ho lasciato in Creta, affinchè tu completi l'opera di riordinamento, e stabilisca città per città dei presbiteri, così com'io t'ho ordinato,
6 that is, each of them must be a man of irreproachable character, husband of one wife, and his childrenmust be believers and not liable to be charged with disorderly conduct or insubordination.	6 se qualcuno v'è irreprensibile, marito di una sol donna, che abbia figliuoli credenti, senza traccia di dissolutezza o di insubordinazione.
7 The presiding elder has to be irreproachable since he is God's representative: never arrogant or hot-tempered, nor a heavy drinker or violent, nor avaricious;	7 Giacchè il vescovo ha da essere uomo irreprensibile, come amministratore di Dio, non arrogante, non iracondo, non dedito al vino, non violento, non cercatore di turpe lucro;
8 but hospitable and a lover of goodness; sensible, upright, devout and self-control ed;	8 ma per contro ospitale, amante di bene, saggio, giusto, pio, temperante,
9 and he must have a firm grasp of the unchanging message of the tradition, so that he can be counted onboth for giving encouragement in sound doctrine and for refuting those who argue against it.	9 attaccato alla parola di fede conforme all'insegnamento avuto; affinchè sia in grado anche di esortare nella sana dottrina e di confutare quelli che la contraddicono.
10 And in fact there are many people who are insubordinate, who talk nonsense and try to make othersbelieve it, particularly among those of the circumcision.	10 Giacchè molti vi sono insubordinati, chiacchieroni e ingannatori, massime fra i circoncisi,
11 They must be silenced: people of this kind upset whole families, by teaching things that they ought notto, and doing it for the sake of sordid gain.	11 ai quali bisogna chiuder la bocca; costoro sovvertono intiere famiglie insegnando quel che non si deve, per vil guadagno.
12 It was one of themselves, one of their own prophets, who said, 'Cretans were never anything but liars,dangerous animals, al greed and laziness';	12 Disse uno di loro, un loro proprio profeta: «I Cretesi sempre bugiardi, male bestie, ghiottoni, infingardi»;
13 and that is a true statement. So be severe in correcting them, and make them sound in the faith	13 questa testimonianza è vera. Per la qual cosa redarguiscili recisamente, perchè si risanino nella fede,
14 so that they stop taking notice of Jewish myths and the orders of people who turn away from the truth.	14 non dando retta a favole giudaiche e a precetti di uomini che voltan le spalle alla verità.
15 To those who are pure themselves, everything is pure; but to those who have been corrupted and lackfaith, nothing can be pure -- the corruption is both in their minds and in their consciences.	15 Tutto è puro per i puri; per i contaminati e gli infedeli nulla è puro, ma si è contaminata in loro anche la mente e la coscienza.
16 They claim to know God but by their works they deny him; they are outrageously rebellious and quiteuntrustworthy for any good work.	16 Professano di saper chi è Dio, ma colle opere lo rinnegano, essendo abominevoli e ribelli e incapaci di qualsiasi opera buona.
