1 From Paul, servant of God, an apostle of Jesus Christ to bring those whom God has chosen to faith andto the knowledge of the truth that leads to true religion,	1 Lettre de Paul, serviteur de Dieu, apôtre de Jésus Christ, pour mener les élus de Dieu à la foi et, par la religion, à la connaissance de la vérité.
2 and to give them the hope of the eternal life that was promised so long ago by God. He does not lie	2 Elle nous fait espérer la vie éternelle que, depuis toujours, le Dieu qui ne ment pas nous avait promise.
3 and so, in due time, he made known his message by a proclamation which was entrusted to me by thecommand of God our Saviour.	3 Au moment fixé il nous a parlé en toute clarté, et c’est le message qui m’a été confié par une décision de Dieu, notre Sauveur.
4 To Titus, true child of mine in the faith that we share. Grace and peace from God the Father and fromChrist Jesus our Saviour.	4 Salut à toi, Tite, mon cher enfant dans la foi que nous partageons ensemble. Reçois grâce et paix de Dieu le Père et du Christ Jésus, notre Sauveur!
5 The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to organise everything that stil had to be done andappoint elders in every town, in the way that I told you,	5 Si je t’ai laissé en Crète, c’était pour que tu achèves la remise en ordre, et que tu établisses des anciens dans chaque ville, comme je te l’avais ordonné.
6 that is, each of them must be a man of irreproachable character, husband of one wife, and his childrenmust be believers and not liable to be charged with disorderly conduct or insubordination.	6 Il te faut des gens irréprochables, hommes d’une seule femme. Il faut que leurs enfants aient la foi et qu’on ne puisse pas dire qu’ils se conduisent mal et n’obéissent pas.
7 The presiding elder has to be irreproachable since he is God's representative: never arrogant or hot-tempered, nor a heavy drinker or violent, nor avaricious;	7 Le gardien est l’administrateur de Dieu; il doit donc être au-dessus de tout reproche. Ni arrogant, ni coléreux, ni buveur, ni querelleur, ni intéressé,
8 but hospitable and a lover of goodness; sensible, upright, devout and self-control ed;	8 mais au contraire hospitalier, ami du bien, homme de bon jugement, juste, pieux, maître de lui-même.
9 and he must have a firm grasp of the unchanging message of the tradition, so that he can be counted onboth for giving encouragement in sound doctrine and for refuting those who argue against it.	9 Quand il parle, il doit s’attacher à ce qui est sûr, en accord avec la doctrine. Il doit être capable de prêcher la saine doctrine et de réfuter les opposants.
10 And in fact there are many people who are insubordinate, who talk nonsense and try to make othersbelieve it, particularly among those of the circumcision.	10 Car il y a beaucoup d’esprits rebelles et de beaux parleurs qui trompent leur monde; très souvent ils sont d’origine juive.
11 They must be silenced: people of this kind upset whole families, by teaching things that they ought notto, and doing it for the sake of sordid gain.	11 Il faut leur fermer la bouche quand ils parlent de travers de façon très intéressée, ou sinon, ils retournent des familles entières.
12 It was one of themselves, one of their own prophets, who said, 'Cretans were never anything but liars,dangerous animals, al greed and laziness';	12 Un homme de leur race, leur propre prophète, a dit: "Crétois, toujours menteurs; sales bêtes et ventres fainéants!”
13 and that is a true statement. So be severe in correcting them, and make them sound in the faith	13 Il a dit vrai. C’est pourquoi tu les reprendras sévèrement afin que leur foi reste saine.
14 so that they stop taking notice of Jewish myths and the orders of people who turn away from the truth.	14 Il ne faut pas qu’ils prennent au sérieux les fables juives, les règles données par des gens qui tournent le dos à la vérité.
15 To those who are pure themselves, everything is pure; but to those who have been corrupted and lackfaith, nothing can be pure -- the corruption is both in their minds and in their consciences.	15 Tout est pur pour ceux qui sont purs, mais rien n’est pur pour les gens impurs, c’est-à-dire les infidèles, puisque même leur esprit et leur conscience sont souillés.
16 They claim to know God but by their works they deny him; they are outrageously rebellious and quiteuntrustworthy for any good work.	16 Ils prétendent connaître Dieu, mais ils le renient par leurs œuvres. Ce sont des rebelles que Dieu déteste et qui ne valent rien pour aucune œuvre utile.
