From Paul, servant of God, an apostle of Jesus Christ to bring those whom God has chosen to faith andto the knowledge of the truth that leads to true religion,1 Paul, a servant of God and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, in accord with the faith of God’s elect and in acknowledgment of the truth which is accompanied by piety,
and to give them the hope of the eternal life that was promised so long ago by God. He does not lie2 in the hope of the eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before the ages of time,
and so, in due time, he made known his message by a proclamation which was entrusted to me by thecommand of God our Saviour.3 which, at the proper time, he has manifested by his Word, in the preaching that has been entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior;
To Titus, true child of mine in the faith that we share. Grace and peace from God the Father and fromChrist Jesus our Saviour.4 to Titus, beloved son according to the common faith. Grace and peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Savior.
The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to organise everything that stil had to be done andappoint elders in every town, in the way that I told you,5 For this reason, I left you behind in Crete: so that those things which are lacking, you would correct, and so that you would ordain, throughout the communities, priests, (just as I also ordained you)
that is, each of them must be a man of irreproachable character, husband of one wife, and his childrenmust be believers and not liable to be charged with disorderly conduct or insubordination.6 if such a man is without offense, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of self-indulgence, nor of insubordination.
The presiding elder has to be irreproachable since he is God's representative: never arrogant or hot-tempered, nor a heavy drinker or violent, nor avaricious;7 And a bishop, as a steward of God, must be without offense: not arrogant, not short-tempered, not a drunkard, not violent, not desiring tainted profit,
but hospitable and a lover of goodness; sensible, upright, devout and self-control ed;8 but instead: hospitable, kind, sober, just, holy, chaste,
and he must have a firm grasp of the unchanging message of the tradition, so that he can be counted onboth for giving encouragement in sound doctrine and for refuting those who argue against it.9 embracing faithful speech which is in agreement with doctrine, so that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine and to argue against those who contradict.
And in fact there are many people who are insubordinate, who talk nonsense and try to make othersbelieve it, particularly among those of the circumcision.10 For there are, indeed, many who are disobedient, who speak empty words, and who deceive, especially those who are of the circumcision.
They must be silenced: people of this kind upset whole families, by teaching things that they ought notto, and doing it for the sake of sordid gain.11 These must be reproved, for they subvert entire houses, teaching things which should not be taught, for the favor of shameful gain.
It was one of themselves, one of their own prophets, who said, 'Cretans were never anything but liars,dangerous animals, al greed and laziness';12 A certain one of these, a prophet of their own kind, said: “The Cretans are ever liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
and that is a true statement. So be severe in correcting them, and make them sound in the faith13 This testimony is true. Because of this, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith,
so that they stop taking notice of Jewish myths and the orders of people who turn away from the truth.14 not paying attention to Jewish fables, nor to the rules of men who have turned themselves away from the truth.
To those who are pure themselves, everything is pure; but to those who have been corrupted and lackfaith, nothing can be pure -- the corruption is both in their minds and in their consciences.15 All things are clean to those who are clean. But to those who are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean; for both their mind and their conscience have been polluted.
They claim to know God but by their works they deny him; they are outrageously rebellious and quiteuntrustworthy for any good work.16 They claim that they know God. But, by their own works, they deny him, since they are abominable, and unbelieving, and reprobate, toward every good work.
