Joshua 6

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Now, Jericho had shut and barricaded its gates (against the Israelites): no one came out and no onewent in.	1 Or Jéricho s'était enfermée et barricadée (contre les Israélites): personne n'en sortait et personne n'yentrait.
2 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Look, I am putting Jericho, its picked troops and its king, at your mercy.	2 Yahvé dit alors à Josué: "Vois! Je livre entre tes mains Jéricho et son roi, gens d'élite.
3 Al you warriors must march round the city (go right round the city once, doing the same on sixsuccessive days.	3 Vous tous les combattants, vous contournerez la ville (pour en faire une fois le tour, et pendant sixjours tu feras de même.
4 Seven priests must carry seven ram's-horn trumpets in front of the ark. On the seventh day, you wil goseven times round the city and the priests wil blow their trumpets).	4 Sept prêtres porteront en avant de l'arche sept trompes en corne de bélier. Le septième jour, vous ferezsept fois le tour de la ville et les prêtres sonneront de la trompe).
5 When the ram's horn sounds (when you hear the sound of the trumpet), the entire people must utter amighty war cry and the city wall wil col apse then and there; the people wil then go into the assault, each manstraight ahead.'	5 Lorsque la corne de bélier retentira (quand vous entendrez le son de la trompe), tout le peuplepoussera un grand cri de guerre et le rempart de la ville s'écroulera sur place; alors le peuple montera à l'assaut,chacun droit devant soi."
6 Joshua son of Nun summoned the priests and said to them, 'Take up the ark of the covenant, and letseven priests carry seven ram's-horn trumpets ahead of the ark of Yahweh.'	6 Josué, fils de Nûn, appela les prêtres et leur dit: "Prenez l'arche d'alliance, et que sept prêtres portentsept trompes en corne de bélier en avant de l'arche de Yahvé."
7 To the people he then said, 'Forward! March round the city, and let the vanguard march ahead of theark of Yahweh!'	7 Puis il dit au peuple: "Passez et faites le tour de la ville, et que l'avant-garde passe devant l'arche deYahvé."
8 (Everything was done as Joshua had given orders to the people.) Seven priests, carrying seven ram's-horn trumpets ahead of Yahweh, moved forward blowing their trumpets; the ark of the covenant of Yahwehcame behind them,	8 (Il fut fait comme Josué l'avait dit au peuple). Sept prêtres portant les sept trompes en corne de bélierdevant Yahvé passèrent et sonnèrent de la trompe; l'arche de l'alliance de Yahvé venait après eux,
9 the vanguard marched ahead of the priests, who blew their trumpets, the rearguard fol owed behind theark; the men marched, the trumpets sounded.	9 l'avant-garde précédait les prêtres qui sonnaient de la trompe et l'arrière-garde venait après l'arche: onallait et l'on sonnait de la trompe.
10 Joshua had given the people the fol owing orders, 'Do not raise a war cry, do not let your voice be heard (not a word must pass your lips), until the day when I say, "Raise the war cry." That is when you mustraise the war cry.'	10 Au peuple, Josué avait donné l'ordre suivant: "Ne criez pas et ne faites pas entendre votre voix (qu'ilne sorte pas un mot de votre bouche), jusqu'au jour où je vous dirai: Poussez le cri de guerre! Alors vouspousserez le cri de guerre."
11 He made the ark go round the city (going round it once), then they went back to camp, where theyspent the night.	11 Il fit faire à l'arche de Yahvé le tour de la ville (en la contournant une fois), puis on rentra au campoù l'on passa la nuit.
12 Joshua got up early, and the priests took up the ark of Yahweh.	12 Josué se leva de bon matin et les prêtres prirent l'arche de Yahvé.
13 Carrying the seven ram's-horn trumpets, the seven priests walked ahead of the ark of Yahweh,blowing their trumpets as they went, while the vanguard marched ahead of them and the rearguard behind theark of Yahweh, and the march went on to the sound of the trumpet.	13 Munis des sept trompes en corne de bélier, les sept prêtres marchant devant l'arche de Yahvésonnaient de leur trompe pendant la marche, tandis que l'avant-garde allait devant eux, l'arrière-garde à la suitede l'arche de Yahvé, et que l'on défilait au son de la trompe.
14 They marched once round the city (on the second day) and went back to camp; and so on for six days.	14 On fit le tour de la ville (le second jour) une fois, et l'on rentra au camp; c'est ainsi que l'on fitpendant six jours.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at dawn and marched (in the same manner) round the city seventimes. (This was the only day when they marched round the city seven times.)	15 Le septième jour, s'étant levés dès l'aurore, ils firent le tour de la ville (selon le même rite) sept fois.(C'est seulement ce jour-là qu'on fit sept fois le tour de la ville.)
16 At the seventh time, the priests blew their trumpets and Joshua said to the people, 'Raise the war cry,for Yahweh has given you the city!	16 La septième fois, les prêtres sonnèrent de la trompe et Josué dit au peuple: "Poussez le cri de guerre,car Yahvé vous a livré la ville!"
17 'The city and everyone in it must be devoted to Yahweh under the curse of destruction; the life ofRahab the prostitute alone must be spared, with al those with her in her house, since she hid the messengerswe sent.	17 "La ville sera dévouée par anathème à Yahvé, avec tout ce qui s'y trouve. Seule Rahab, la prostituée,aura la vie sauve ainsi que tous ceux qui sont avec elle dans sa maison, parce qu'elle a caché les émissaires quenous avions envoyés.
18 But beware of the curse of destruction, yourselves, for fear that, moved by greed, you take somethinglying under the curse; that would put the camp of Israel under the same curse and bring disaster on it.	18 Mais vous, prenez bien garde à l'anathème, de peur que, poussés par la convoitise, vous ne preniezquelque chose de ce qui est anathème, car ce serait rendre anathème le camp d'Israël et lui porter malheur.
19 All the silver and all the gold, everything made of bronze or iron, wil be consecrated to Yahweh andput in his treasury.'	19 Tout l'argent et tout l'or, tous les objets de bronze et de fer seront consacrés à Yahvé, ils entrerontdans son trésor."
20 The people raised the war cry, the trumpets sounded. When the people heard the sound of thetrumpet, they raised a mighty war cry and the wal col apsed then and there. At once the people stormed the city,each man going straight forward; and they captured the city.	20 Le peuple poussa le cri de guerre et l'on sonna de la trompe. Quand il entendit le son de la trompe, lepeuple poussa un grand cri de guerre, et le rempart s'écroula sur place. Aussitôt le peuple monta vers la ville,chacun devant soi, et ils s'emparèrent de la ville.
21 They enforced the curse of destruction on everyone in the city: men and women, young and old,including the oxen, the sheep and the donkeys, slaughtering them all.	21 Ils dévouèrent à l'anathème tout ce qui se trouvait dans la ville, hommes et femmes, jeunes et vieux,jusqu'aux taureaux, aux moutons et aux ânes, les passant au fil de l'épée.
22 Joshua said to the two men who had reconnoitred the country, 'Go into the prostitute's house, andbring the woman out with al who belong to her, as you swore to her that you would.'	22 Josué dit aux deux hommes qui avaient espionné le pays: "Entrez dans la maison de la prostituée etfaites-en sortir cette femme avec tous ceux qui lui appartiennent, ainsi que vous le lui avez juré."
23 The young men who had been spies went and brought Rahab out, with her father and mother andbrothers and al who belonged to her. They brought out all her clansmen too, and put them in a place of safetyoutside the camp of Israel.	23 Ces jeunes gens, les espions, s'y rendirent et en firent sortir Rahab, son père, sa mère, ses frères ettous ceux qui lui appartenaient. Ils en firent sortir aussi tout son clan et les mirent en lieu sûr, en dehors du campd'Israël.
24 They burned the city and everything inside it, except the silver, the gold and the things of bronze andiron; these they put into the treasury of Yahweh's house.	24 On brûla la ville et tout ce qu'elle contenait, sauf l'argent, l'or et les objets de bronze et de fer qu'onlivra au trésor de la Maison de Yahvé.
25 But Rahab the prostitute, her father's family and al who belonged to her, these Joshua spared. She isstill living in Israel even today, for having hidden the messengers whom Joshua sent to reconnoitre Jericho.	25 Mais Rahab, la prostituée, ainsi que la maison de son père et tous ceux qui lui appartenaient, Josuéleur laissa la vie sauve. Elle est demeurée au milieu d'Israël jusqu'aujourd'hui, pour avoir caché les émissairesque Josué avait envoyés espionner Jéricho.
26 At that time Joshua made them take this oath before Yahweh: Accursed before Yahweh be the manwho rises up and rebuilds this city (Jericho)! On his first-born wil he lay its foundations, on his youngest son setup its gates!	26 En ce temps-là, Josué fit prononcer ce serment: "Maudit soit, devant Yahvé, l'homme qui se lèverapour rebâtir cette ville (Jéricho)! Il la fondera sur son aîné, et en posera les portes sur son cadet!"
27 So Yahweh was with Joshua, whose fame spread throughout the country.	27 Et Yahvé fut avec Josué, dont la renommée se répandit dans tout le pays.
