NEW JERUSALEM	Biblia Matos Soares
1 From Shittim, Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men to reconnoitre. He said, 'Go and explore thecountry and Jericho.' They left; they went into the house of a prostitute called Rahab, to spend the night there.	1 Josué, filho de Nun, enviou secretamente de Setim dois espiões, e disse-lhes: Ide, examinai o país e a cidade de Jericó. Eles partiram e entraram em casa duma meretriz, chamada Baab, e repousaram em sua casa.
2 The king of Jericho was told, 'Some men have come here tonight from the Israelites, to reconnoitre thecountry.'	2 E foi dado aviso disso ao rei de Jericó, assim: entraram aqui de noite uns homens dos filhos de Israel, para explorar o país.
3 The king of Jericho then sent a message to Rahab, 'Send out the men who came to you and are lodgingin your house, for they have come to reconnoitre the whole country.'	3 O rei de Jericó mandou dizer a Raab; Faze sair esses homens, que foram ter contigo e entraram em tua casa, porque são espiões que vieram reconhecer todo o país.
4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. 'It is true,' she said, 'the men did come to me, but I didnot know where they came from.	4 Mas a mulher, tomando os homens, escondeu-os, e disse: Confesso que eles vieram a minha casa, mas eu não sabia donde eram,
5 When the city gate was about to be closed at nightfal , the men went out and I cannot say where theyhave gone. Follow them quickly and you wil overtake them.'	5 e, quando se fechava a porta (da cidade), sendo já escuro, eles saíram ao mesmo tempo, e não sei para onde foram. Ide após eles, depressa, e encontrá-los-eis.
6 She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax which she had laid outthere.	6 Ora ela tinha feito subir os homens ao terraço da sua casa e tinha-os coberto com palha de linho, que ali havia.
7 The men hurried in pursuit of them towards the Jordan, as far as the fords, and the gate was shut oncethe pursuers had gone through.	7 Os que haviam sido enviados, foram atrás deles pelo caminho que conduz ao vau do Jordão, e, logo que saíram, foi fechada a porta (da cidade).
8 The two men had not yet settled down for the night when Rahab came up to them on the roof.	8 Ainda os homens, que estavam escondidos, não tinham adormecido, quando a mulher subiu junto deles e lhes disse:
9 She said to them, 'I know that Yahweh has given you this country, that we are afraid of you and thateveryone living in this country has been seized with terror at your approach;	9 Eu sei que o Senhor vos entregou este país; o terror de vós apoderou-se de nós, e todos os habitantes do pais desanimaram,
10 for we have heard how Yahweh dried up the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egyptand what you did to the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under the curse ofdestruction.	10 pois soubemos que o Senhor secou as águas do Mar Vermelho à vossa entrada, quando saistes do Egipto, e (soubemos) o que fizestes aos dois reis dos Amorreus, que estavam da banda de além do Jordão, Seon e Og, os quais matastes.
11 When we heard this, our hearts failed us, and now no one has any courage left to resist you, sinceYahweh your God is God both in heaven above and on earth beneath.	11 Quando ouvimos isto, tivemos grande medo, o nosso coração desmaiou e não ficou alento em nós à vossa aproximação; porque o Senhor vosso Deus é o (mesmo) Deus (que reina ) lá em cima no céu, e cá em baixo na terra.
12 So, swear to me now by Yahweh, since I have been kind to you,	12 Agora pois jurai-me pelo Senhor, que, assim como eu usei de misericórdia convosco, assim usareis com a casa de meu pai, e dai-me um sinal seguro
13 that you in your turn will be kind to my father's family; and give me a sure sign of this: that you wilspare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters and al who belong to them, and will preserveus from death.'	13 de que salvareis meu pai e minha mãe, meus irmãos e minhas irmãs, assim como tudo o que lhes pertence, e livrareis as nossas vidas da morte.
14 The men replied, 'We pledge you our lives, provided that you say nothing about our mission. WhenYahweh has given us the country, we shal treat you kindly and faithful y.'	14 Eles responderam-lhe: À custa da nossa vida salvaremos a vossa, contanto que tu nos não atraiçoes; quando o Senhor nos entregar este país, usaremos contigo de misericórdia e de fidelidade.
15 She then let them down from the window on a rope, as her house was against the city wal and sheactual y lived in the wal .	15 Ela os fez descer da janela por uma corda, porque a sua casa estava pegada ao muro (da cidade).
16 'Make for the hil s,' she said, 'or you may run into your pursuers. Hide there for three days, until yourpursuers have come back, and then go on your way.'	16 Disse-lhes: Ide para o monte, não suceda que eles vos encontrem, quando voltarem, e deixai-vos lá estar escondidos durante três dias, até que eles voltem, e depois tomareis o vosso caminho.
17 The men said, 'This is how we shall fulfil the oath which you have made us swear:	17 Eles disseram-lhes: Nós cumpriremos fielmente o juramento, que nos fizeste prestar,
18 when we invade the country, you must tie this scarlet cord to the window from which you let us down,and collect your father, mother, brothers and entire family inside your house.	18 se, quando entrarmos no país, estiver como sinal este cordão cor de escarlate, e o atares à janela, por onde nos fizeste descer, e se tiveres recolhido, em tua casa, o teu pai, a tua mãe, os teus irmãos e toda a tua parentela.
19 If anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood wil be on his own head and weshall not be to blame; but the blood of al staying inside the house with you wil be on our heads if a hand is laidon any of them.	19 Se alguém sair da porta da tua casa, o seu sangue cairá sobre a sua cabeça, e nós ficaremos sem culpa; mas o sangue de todos os que estiverem contigo em tua casa cairá sobre a nossa cabeça, se alguém os tocar.
20 But if you divulge our mission in the meanwhile, we shal be free of the oath which you have made usswear.'	20 Porém, se tu nos atraiçoares, e publicares isto que te dizemos, ficaremos desobrigados deste juramento, que nos fizeste prestar.
21 She replied, 'Let it be as you say.' She let them go, and they left. She then tied the scarlet cord to thewindow.	21 Ela respondeu: Faça-se como dissestes. Depois os despediu e eles partiram; (então) pendurou o cordão cor de escarlate à janela.
22 They left and made for the hil s. They stayed there for three days, until their pursuers had gone home,having scoured the countryside without finding them.	22 Eles, andando, chegaram ao monte, e lá permaneceram durante três dias, até que voltaram os que tinham ido em seu seguimento. Estes, tendo buscado por todo o caminho (os espiões), não os encontraram.
23 The two men then came down again from the hil s, crossed over and, going to Joshua son of Nun, toldhim everything that had happened to them.	23 (Então) os espiões deram volta, e, tendo descido do monte e passado o Jordão, chegaram a Josué, filho de Nun, e contaram-lhe tudo o que lhes tinha acontecido,
24 To Joshua they said, 'Yahweh has put the whole country at our mercy, and its inhabitants are al panic-stricken at our approach.'	24 dizendo: O Senhor entregou todo este país nas nossas mãos, pois os seus habitantes estão consternados de medo.
