NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 From Shittim, Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men to reconnoitre. He said, 'Go and explore thecountry and Jericho.' They left; they went into the house of a prostitute called Rahab, to spend the night there.	1 - Giosuè, figlio di Nun, mandò segretamente da Setim due esploratori, dicendo: «Andate ad esplorare la terra e la città di Gerico». Essi andarono ed entrarono in casa di una donna meretrice chiamata Raab e vi si riposarono.
2 The king of Jericho was told, 'Some men have come here tonight from the Israelites, to reconnoitre thecountry.'	2 La cosa fu riferita al re di Gerico e gli fu detto: «Durante la notte certi uomini appartenenti ai figli d'Israele sono entrati in città per esplorare il paese».
3 The king of Jericho then sent a message to Rahab, 'Send out the men who came to you and are lodgingin your house, for they have come to reconnoitre the whole country.'	3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Raab: «Fa' uscire quegli uomini che son venuti da te e sono in casa tua, perchè essi sono spioni venuti a esplorare tutto il paese».
4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. 'It is true,' she said, 'the men did come to me, but I didnot know where they came from.	4 Ma la donna, presi quegli uomini, li nascose e disse: «È vero; essi vennero da me, ma io non sapevo donde fossero;
5 When the city gate was about to be closed at nightfal , the men went out and I cannot say where theyhave gone. Follow them quickly and you wil overtake them.'	5 quando poi si stava per chiudere la porta, sul far della notte, essi se ne andarono non so dove. Inseguiteli senza perder tempo e li raggiungerete».
6 She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax which she had laid outthere.	6 Essa allora fece salire quegli uomini sulla terrazza della sua casa e li ricoprì colla stoppia di lino, che là si trovava.
7 The men hurried in pursuit of them towards the Jordan, as far as the fords, and the gate was shut oncethe pursuers had gone through.	7 Frattanto gl'inviati [del re] li inseguirono per la via che conduce al guado del Giordano; e non appena furono usciti, la porta venne immediatamente chiusa.
8 The two men had not yet settled down for the night when Rahab came up to them on the roof.	8 Non s'erano ancora addormentati coloro che eran nascosti, quando la donna salì da loro per dire:
9 She said to them, 'I know that Yahweh has given you this country, that we are afraid of you and thateveryone living in this country has been seized with terror at your approach;	9 «So che il Signore vi darà nelle mani il paese, perchè il terrore del vostro nome ci ha invasi, e tutti gli abitanti del paese hanno perso coraggio.
10 for we have heard how Yahweh dried up the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egyptand what you did to the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under the curse ofdestruction.	10 Abbiamo inteso che il Signore asciugò le acque del Mar Rosso al vostro passaggio, quando usciste dall'Egitto e quel che voi avete fatto ai due re degli Amorrei, che erano al di là del Giordano, Seon e Og da voi uccisi.
11 When we heard this, our hearts failed us, and now no one has any courage left to resist you, sinceYahweh your God is God both in heaven above and on earth beneath.	11 All'udir ciò ci siamo impauriti, ci perdemmo di coraggio e al vostro avanzarsi l'animo nostro si è accasciato completamente; perchè il Signore Dio vostro è Dio lassù in cielo e quaggiù in terra.
12 So, swear to me now by Yahweh, since I have been kind to you,	12 Ora dunque giuratemi nel nome del Signore che la stessa misericordia da me usata verso di voi, voi la userete verso la casa del padre mio e mi darete un segnale sicuro
13 that you in your turn will be kind to my father's family; and give me a sure sign of this: that you wilspare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters and al who belong to them, and will preserveus from death.'	13 che voi salverete mio padre, mia madre, i miei fratelli e le mie sorelle e tutto ciò che loro appartiene e ci scamperete dalla morte».
14 The men replied, 'We pledge you our lives, provided that you say nothing about our mission. WhenYahweh has given us the country, we shal treat you kindly and faithful y.'	14 Al che essi risposero: «La nostra vita sarà per voi fino alla morte, se però tu non ci tradirai; e quando il Signore ci avrà dato in mano il paese, noi ti tratteremo con misericordia e con lealtà».
15 She then let them down from the window on a rope, as her house was against the city wal and sheactual y lived in the wal .	15 Li fece allora calare con una fune dalla finestra, perchè la sua casa dava sulle mura,
16 'Make for the hil s,' she said, 'or you may run into your pursuers. Hide there for three days, until yourpursuers have come back, and then go on your way.'	16 e disse loro: «Salite ai monti, così non v'incontrerete con coloro che ritorneranno, e nascondetevi là per tre giorni, fino al loro ritorno; poi ve n'andrete per la vostra strada».
17 The men said, 'This is how we shall fulfil the oath which you have made us swear:	17 Quelli allora soggiunsero: «Noi saremo liberi dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare,
18 when we invade the country, you must tie this scarlet cord to the window from which you let us down,and collect your father, mother, brothers and entire family inside your house.	18 se al nostro entrare nel paese non vi sarà come segno questa fune rossa legata a questa finestra, per la quale ci hai fatto scendere, e se il padre tuo, la tua madre ed i tuoi fratelli e tutta la tua parentela non saranno riuniti in casa.
19 If anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood wil be on his own head and weshall not be to blame; but the blood of al staying inside the house with you wil be on our heads if a hand is laidon any of them.	19 E se qualcuno di questi uscirà dalla porta di casa tua, il suo sangue ricadrà sul tuo capo e noi non ne avremo colpa; mentre saremo responsabili del sangue di quelli che saranno teco in casa, se qualcuno farà loro ingiuria.
20 But if you divulge our mission in the meanwhile, we shal be free of the oath which you have made usswear.'	20 Che se tu pensassi a tradirci e divulgare quanto ti stiamo dicendo, saremo liberi da questo giuramento che ci hai fatto fare».
21 She replied, 'Let it be as you say.' She let them go, and they left. She then tied the scarlet cord to thewindow.	21 Al che ella rispose: «Sia come dite!». E nel lasciarli andare per la loro strada appese la fune rossa alla finestra.
22 They left and made for the hil s. They stayed there for three days, until their pursuers had gone home,having scoured the countryside without finding them.	22 Partiti che furono e arrivati sui monti, vi rimasero tre giorni finchè non se ne furono ritornati i loro inseguitori, i quali dopo averli cercati ovunque non eran riusciti a trovarli.
23 The two men then came down again from the hil s, crossed over and, going to Joshua son of Nun, toldhim everything that had happened to them.	23 Entrati questi in città, i due esploratori fecero ritorno e discesi dal monte passarono il Giordano e se ne vennero a Giosuè figlio di Nun, al quale raccontarono quanto ad essi era accaduto
24 To Joshua they said, 'Yahweh has put the whole country at our mercy, and its inhabitants are al panic-stricken at our approach.'	24 e dissero: «Il Signore diede nelle nostre mani tutto questo paese, i cui abitanti son tutti in preda allo spavento».
