NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 From Shittim, Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men to reconnoitre. He said, 'Go and explore thecountry and Jericho.' They left; they went into the house of a prostitute called Rahab, to spend the night there.	1 OR Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, avea mandati segretamente da Sittim due uomini, per ispiare il paese; dicendo loro: Andate, vedete il paese, e Gerico. Essi adunque andarono, ed entrarono in casa d’una meretrice, il cui nome era Rahab, e quivi si posarono.
2 The king of Jericho was told, 'Some men have come here tonight from the Israelites, to reconnoitre thecountry.'	2 E ciò fu rapportato al re di Gerico, e gli fu detto: Ecco, certi uomini sono entrati là entro questa notte, mandati da’ figliuoli d’Israele, per ispiare il paese.
3 The king of Jericho then sent a message to Rahab, 'Send out the men who came to you and are lodgingin your house, for they have come to reconnoitre the whole country.'	3 E il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rahab: Fa’ uscir fuori quegli uomini che son venuti a te, e sono entrati in casa tua; perciocchè essi son venuti per ispiar tutto il paese.
4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. 'It is true,' she said, 'the men did come to me, but I didnot know where they came from.	4 Ma la donna avea presi que’ due uomini, e li avea nascosti. Ed ella disse: Egli è vero; quegli uomini erano venuti in casa mia; e io non sapeva onde si fossero.
5 When the city gate was about to be closed at nightfal , the men went out and I cannot say where theyhave gone. Follow them quickly and you wil overtake them.'	5 Ma in sul serrar delle porte, nel farsi oscuro, quegli uomini sono usciti fuori; io non so dove sieno andati; perseguiteli prestamente, perciocchè voi li raggiungerete.
6 She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax which she had laid outthere.	6 Or essa li avea fatti salir sul tetto, e li avea nascosti sotto del lino non ancora gramolato, il quale ella avea disteso sopra il tetto.
7 The men hurried in pursuit of them towards the Jordan, as far as the fords, and the gate was shut oncethe pursuers had gone through.	7 E alcuni uomini li perseguirono per la via del Giordano, infino a’ passi; e tosto che furono usciti quelli che li perseguivano, la porta fu serrata
8 The two men had not yet settled down for the night when Rahab came up to them on the roof.	8 Ora, avanti che quegli uomini si mettessero a giacere, ella salì a loro in sul tetto.
9 She said to them, 'I know that Yahweh has given you this country, that we are afraid of you and thateveryone living in this country has been seized with terror at your approach;	9 E disse loro: Io so che il Signore vi ha dato il paese, e che lo spavento di voi è caduto sopra noi, e che tutti gli abitanti del paese son divenuti tutti fiacchi, per tema di voi.
10 for we have heard how Yahweh dried up the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egyptand what you did to the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under the curse ofdestruction.	10 Perciocchè noi abbiamo udito come il Signore seccò le acque del mar rosso d’innanzi a voi, quando voi usciste di Egitto; abbiamo ancora udito ciò che avete fatto a’ due re degli Amorrei, ch’erano di là dal Giordano, a Sihon, e ad Og; i quali voi avete distrutti al modo dell’interdetto.
11 When we heard this, our hearts failed us, and now no one has any courage left to resist you, sinceYahweh your God is God both in heaven above and on earth beneath.	11 E, avendolo udito, il cuor nostro si è strutto, e l’animo non è più restato fermo in alcuno per tema di voi; conciossiachè il vostro Dio sia Iddio in cielo disopra, e in su la terra disotto.
12 So, swear to me now by Yahweh, since I have been kind to you,	12 Ora dunque, giuratemi, vi prego, per lo Signore, e datemene un segno verace, che poichè io ho usata benignità inverso voi, voi altresì userete benignità inverso la casa di mio padre;
13 that you in your turn will be kind to my father's family; and give me a sure sign of this: that you wilspare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters and al who belong to them, and will preserveus from death.'	13 e che salverete la vita a mio padre, e a mia madre, e ai miei fratelli, e alle mie sorelle, e a tutti i loro; e che salverete da morte le nostre persone.
14 The men replied, 'We pledge you our lives, provided that you say nothing about our mission. WhenYahweh has given us the country, we shal treat you kindly and faithful y.'	14 E quegli uomini le dissero: Se voi non palesate questo nostro affare, noi esporremo a morte le nostre persone per voi; e quando il Signore ci avrà dato il paese, noi useremo benignità e lealtà inverso te.
15 She then let them down from the window on a rope, as her house was against the city wal and sheactual y lived in the wal .	15 Allora ella li calò giù dalla finestra con una fune perciocchè la sua casa atteneva al muro della città, ed ella dimorava in sul muro;
16 'Make for the hil s,' she said, 'or you may run into your pursuers. Hide there for three days, until yourpursuers have come back, and then go on your way.'	16 e disse loro: Andate verso il monte, che talora quelli che vi perseguono non vi scontrino; e quivi state nascosti tre giorni, finchè sieno ritornati quelli che vi perseguono; e poi andrete a vostro cammino.
17 The men said, 'This is how we shall fulfil the oath which you have made us swear:	17 E quegli uomini le dissero; Noi saremo sciolti da questo tuo giuramento, che tu ci hai fatto fare, in questa maniera.
18 when we invade the country, you must tie this scarlet cord to the window from which you let us down,and collect your father, mother, brothers and entire family inside your house.	18 Ecco, quando noi entreremo nel paese, tu legherai questa cordella di filo di scarlatto alla finestra, per la quale tu ci avrai calati giù, e accoglierai appo te in questa casa tuo padre, e tua madre, e i tuoi fratelli, e tutta la famiglia di tuo padre.
19 If anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood wil be on his own head and weshall not be to blame; but the blood of al staying inside the house with you wil be on our heads if a hand is laidon any of them.	19 E se alcuno esce fuor dell’uscio di casa tua, il suo sangue sarà sopra il suo capo, e noi non vi avremo colpa; ma il sangue di chiunque sarà teco in casa sarà sopra il nostro capo, se alcuno gli metterà la mano addosso.
20 But if you divulge our mission in the meanwhile, we shal be free of the oath which you have made usswear.'	20 Se altresì tu palesi questo nostro affare, noi saremo sciolti dal tuo giuramento che tu ci hai fatto fare.
21 She replied, 'Let it be as you say.' She let them go, and they left. She then tied the scarlet cord to thewindow.	21 Ed ella disse: Egli è ragionevole di fare come voi avete detto. Poi li accommiatò, ed essi se ne andarono. Ed ella legò la cordella dello scarlatto alla finestra
22 They left and made for the hil s. They stayed there for three days, until their pursuers had gone home,having scoured the countryside without finding them.	22 E coloro se ne adarono, e, giunti al monte, dimorarono quivi tre giorni; finchè fossero ritornati coloro che li perseguivano; i quali avendoli cercati per tutto il cammino, non li trovarono.
23 The two men then came down again from the hil s, crossed over and, going to Joshua son of Nun, toldhim everything that had happened to them.	23 E que’ due uomini se ne ritornarono; e scesi giù dal monte, passarono il Giordano, e vennero a Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, e gli raccontarono tutte le cose ch’erano loro avvenute.
24 To Joshua they said, 'Yahweh has put the whole country at our mercy, and its inhabitants are al panic-stricken at our approach.'	24 E dissero a Giosuè: Certo, il Signore ci ha dato nelle mani tutto quel paese; e anche tutti gli abitanti del paese son divenuti fiacchi per tema di noi
