NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 From Shittim, Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men to reconnoitre. He said, 'Go and explore thecountry and Jericho.' They left; they went into the house of a prostitute called Rahab, to spend the night there.	1 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, da Setim mandò segretamente due esploratori, dicendo loro: « Andate a esplorare il paese e la città di Gerico ». Ed essi, andati, entrarono in casa d'una donna di mala vita, chiamata Rahab, e vi riposarono.
2 The king of Jericho was told, 'Some men have come here tonight from the Israelites, to reconnoitre thecountry.'	2 E la nuova fu recata al re di Gerico, al quale fu detto: « Guarda, degli uomini dei figli d'Israele son entrati qua di notte per esplorare il paese ».
3 The king of Jericho then sent a message to Rahab, 'Send out the men who came to you and are lodgingin your house, for they have come to reconnoitre the whole country.'	3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rahab: « Fa uscir fuori gli uomini che son venuti da te e son entrati in casa tua, perchè sono spioni venuti ad esplorare tutto il paese ».
4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. 'It is true,' she said, 'the men did come to me, but I didnot know where they came from.	4 Ma la donna, dopo aver presi e nascosti quegli uomini, disse: « È vero, da me son venuti, ma non sapevo donde fossero,
5 When the city gate was about to be closed at nightfal , the men went out and I cannot say where theyhave gone. Follow them quickly and you wil overtake them.'	5 e poi al chiudersi della porta, sul far della notte sono usciti, e non so dove siano andati: inseguiteli subito, che li raggiungerete ».
6 She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax which she had laid outthere.	6 Essa poi fece salire quegli uomini sulla terrazza della sua casa e li nascose sotto la stoppia di lino che vi si trovava.
7 The men hurried in pursuit of them towards the Jordan, as far as the fords, and the gate was shut oncethe pursuers had gone through.	7 Or quelli che erano stati mandati l'inseguirono per la strada che mena al guado del Giordano, e appena furono usciti, la porta fu chiusa.
8 The two men had not yet settled down for the night when Rahab came up to them on the roof.	8 Quelli ch'eran nascosti non dormivano ancora, quando la donna salì da loro e disse:
9 She said to them, 'I know that Yahweh has given you this country, that we are afraid of you and thateveryone living in this country has been seized with terror at your approach;	9 « So bene che il Signore vi ha dato il paese: il terrore di voi è già caduto sopra di noi, e tutti gli abitanti del paese sono abbattuti.
10 for we have heard how Yahweh dried up the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egyptand what you did to the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under the curse ofdestruction.	10 Abbiamo udito che il Signore seccò le acque de Mar Rosso, quando vi entraste per uscire dall'Egitto, e come avete trattato i due re degli Amorrei, che eran di là dal Giordano, Sehon ed Og, che voi metteste a morte.
11 When we heard this, our hearts failed us, and now no one has any courage left to resist you, sinceYahweh your God is God both in heaven above and on earth beneath.	11 Nel sentire queste cose, ci siam perduti di coraggio al vostro arrivo, sapendo che il Signore Dio vostro è Dio lassù in cielo e quaggiù in terra.
12 So, swear to me now by Yahweh, since I have been kind to you,	12 Or dunque giuratemi pel Signore d'usar misericordia colla casa di mio padre, come io l'ho usata con voi, e datemi un segno sicuro
13 that you in your turn will be kind to my father's family; and give me a sure sign of this: that you wilspare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters and al who belong to them, and will preserveus from death.'	13 che risparmierete mio padre e mia madre, i miei fratelli e le mie sorelle, e tutto ciò che loro appartiene, e libererete le nostre anime dalla morte ».
14 The men replied, 'We pledge you our lives, provided that you say nothing about our mission. WhenYahweh has given us the country, we shal treat you kindly and faithful y.'	14 Ed essi le risposero: « Che moriamo noi per voi, se però non ci tradisci: quando il Signore ci avrà dato il paese, useremo verso di te misericordia e fedeltà ».
15 She then let them down from the window on a rope, as her house was against the city wal and sheactual y lived in the wal .	15 Allora essa li calò con una fune giù dalla finestra, chè la sua casa era attaccata alle mura;
16 'Make for the hil s,' she said, 'or you may run into your pursuers. Hide there for three days, until yourpursuers have come back, and then go on your way.'	16 e disse loro: « Andate verso il monte, per non essere in contrati da essi quando ritorneranno, e state lassù nascosti per tre giorni, finché non sian tornati, e poi andrete per la vostra strada ».
17 The men said, 'This is how we shall fulfil the oath which you have made us swear:	17 Ed essi a lei: « Non mancheremo a questo giuramento che ci hai fatto fare,
18 when we invade the country, you must tie this scarlet cord to the window from which you let us down,and collect your father, mother, brothers and entire family inside your house.	18 se, quando entreremo nel paese, ti farai riconoscere con questa cordicella di color scarlatto, legandola aila finestra dalla quale ci hai calati, e se raduni in casa tua tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la tua parentela.
19 If anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood wil be on his own head and weshall not be to blame; but the blood of al staying inside the house with you wil be on our heads if a hand is laidon any of them.	19 Se alcuno uscirà dalla porta della tua casa, il sangue di lui sarà sopra la sua testa e non ci avremo colpa noi; ma il sangue di tutti quelli che saranno in casa tua cadrà sopra il nostro capo, se alcuno li toccherà.
20 But if you divulge our mission in the meanwhile, we shal be free of the oath which you have made usswear.'	20 Se poi per tra dirci tu divulgassi quello che diciamo, noi saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare ».
21 She replied, 'Let it be as you say.' She let them go, and they left. She then tied the scarlet cord to thewindow.	21 Essa rispose: « Sia fatto come avete detto »; e dopo averli licenziati affinchè se ne andassero, legò la cordicella di color scarlatto alla finestra.
22 They left and made for the hil s. They stayed there for three days, until their pursuers had gone home,having scoured the countryside without finding them.	22 Ed essi andarono al monte e vi stettero tre giorni, finché non fossero tornati quelli che li avevano inseguiti, e che non li trovarono, sebbene li avessero cercati per ogni via.
23 The two men then came down again from the hil s, crossed over and, going to Joshua son of Nun, toldhim everything that had happened to them.	23 Tornati questi in città, gli esploratori scesero dal monte, e, passato il Giordano, tornarono da Giosuè, figlio di Nun, a cui raccontarono quanto era loro accaduto,
24 To Joshua they said, 'Yahweh has put the whole country at our mercy, and its inhabitants are al panic-stricken at our approach.'	24 e dissero: « Il Signore ha dato nelle nostre mani tutto quel paese, e tutti i suoi abitanti sono abbattuti dallo spavento ».
