And you were dead, through the crimes and the sins1 And you were once dead in your sins and offenses,
which used to make up your way of life when you were living by the principles of this world, obeying theruler who dominates the air, the spirit who is at work in those who rebel.2 in which you walked in times past, according to the age of this world, according to the prince of the power of this sky, the spirit who now works in the sons of distrust.
We too were al among them once, living only by our natural inclinations, obeying the demands ofhuman self-indulgence and our own whim; our nature made us no less liable to God's retribution than the rest ofthe world.3 And we too were all conversant in these things, in times past, by the desires of our flesh, acting according to the will of the flesh and according to our own thoughts. And so we were, by nature, sons of wrath, even like the others.
But God, being rich in faithful love, through the great love with which he loved us,4 Yet still, God, who is rich in mercy, for the sake of his exceedingly great charity with which he loved us,
even when we were dead in our sins, brought us to life with Christ -- it is through grace that you havebeen saved-5 even when we were dead in our sins, has enlivened us together in Christ, by whose grace you have been saved.
and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus.6 And he has raised us up together, and he has caused us to sit down together in the heavens, in Christ Jesus,
This was to show for al ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, howextraordinarily rich he is in grace.7 so that he may display, in the ages soon to arrive, the abundant wealth of his grace, by his goodness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by agift from God;8 For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not of yourselves, for it is a gift of God.
not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit.9 And this is not of works, so that no one may glory.
We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has alreadydesignated to make up our way of life.10 For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has prepared and in which we should walk.
Do not forget, then, that there was a time when you who were gentiles by physical descent, termed theuncircumcised by those who speak of themselves as the circumcised by reason of a physical operation,11 Because of this, be mindful that, in times past, you were Gentiles in the flesh, and that you were called uncircumcised by those who are called circumcised in the flesh, something done by man,
do not forget, I say, that you were at that time separate from Christ and excluded from membership ofIsrael, aliens with no part in the covenants of the Promise, limited to this world, without hope and without God.12 and that you were, in that time, without Christ, being foreign to the way of life of Israel, being visitors to the testament, having no hope of the promise, and being without God in this world.
But now in Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far off have been brought close, by the blood of Christ.13 But now, in Christ Jesus, you, who were in times past far away, have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
For he is the peace between us, and has made the two into one entity and broken down the barrierwhich used to keep them apart, by destroying in his own person the hostility,14 For he is our peace. He made the two into one, by dissolving the intermediate wall of separation, of opposition, by his flesh,
that is, the Law of commandments with its decrees. His purpose in this was, by restoring peace, tocreate a single New Man out of the two of them,15 emptying the law of commandments by decree, so that he might join these two, in himself, into one new man, making peace
and through the cross, to reconcile them both to God in one Body; in his own person he kil ed thehostility.16 and reconciling both to God, in one body, through the cross, destroying this opposition in himself.
He came to bring the good news of peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.17 And upon arriving, he evangelized peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near.
Through him, then, we both in the one Spirit have free access to the Father.18 For by him, we both have access, in the one Spirit, to the Father.
So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fel ow-citizens with the holy people of God andpart of God's household.19 Now, therefore, you are no longer visitors and new arrivals. Instead, you are citizens among the saints in the household of God,
You are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, and Christ Jesus himself is thecornerstone.20 having been built upon the foundation of the Apostles and of the Prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the preeminent cornerstone.
Every structure knit together in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord;21 In him, all that has been built is framed together, rising up into a holy temple in the Lord.
and you too, in him, are being built up into a dwelling-place of God in the Spirit.22 In him, you also have been built together into a habitation of God in the Spirit.
