Ephesians 2

1 And you were dead, through the crimes and the sins	1 Vous étiez des morts par suite de vos fautes et de vos péchés.
2 which used to make up your way of life when you were living by the principles of this world, obeying theruler who dominates the air, the spirit who is at work in those who rebel.	2 Elles vous faisaient vivre au rythme du monde présent et vous suiviez celui qui règne entre ciel et terre, l’esprit qui est actif dans les cœurs rebelles.
3 We too were al among them once, living only by our natural inclinations, obeying the demands ofhuman self-indulgence and our own whim; our nature made us no less liable to God's retribution than the rest ofthe world.	3 Tous nous étions de leur nombre: nous nous laissions mener par nos passions humaines. Nous faisions ce que voulait la chair avec ses ambitions, et de nous-mêmes, nous allions droit au châtiment, tout comme les autres.
4 But God, being rich in faithful love, through the great love with which he loved us,	4 Mais Dieu est riche en miséricorde: de quel amour ne nous a-t-il pas aimés!
5 even when we were dead in our sins, brought us to life with Christ -- it is through grace that you havebeen saved-	5 Nous étions morts de nos péchés, et il nous a fait revivre avec le Christ: il vous a sauvés par pure bonté!
6 and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus.	6 Dans le Christ Jésus il nous a ressuscités avec lui pour nous faire siéger avec lui dans le monde d’en-haut.
7 This was to show for al ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, howextraordinarily rich he is in grace.	7 Dans le Christ Jésus il est toute bonté envers nous; il veut montrer dans les temps à venir toute son extraordinaire générosité.
8 Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by agift from God;	8 C’est à sa bonté que vous devez ce salut par la foi.
9 not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit.	9 Cela n’est pas venu de vous, car Dieu l’a donné; ni de vos œuvres, et donc nul ne peut s’en vanter.
10 We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has alreadydesignated to make up our way of life.	10 Nous sommes une œuvre de Dieu, nous avons été créés dans le Christ Jésus en vue de toutes les belles choses que Dieu a préparées d’avance pour que nous les réalisions.
11 Do not forget, then, that there was a time when you who were gentiles by physical descent, termed theuncircumcised by those who speak of themselves as the circumcised by reason of a physical operation,	11 Rappelez-vous que vous avez été païens; vous l’étiez jusque dans votre chair, et ceux qui se nomment eux-mêmes “les circoncis” (par une circoncision chirurgicale) vous appelaient “non circoncis”.
12 do not forget, I say, that you were at that time separate from Christ and excluded from membership ofIsrael, aliens with no part in the covenants of the Promise, limited to this world, without hope and without God.	12 En ce temps-là vous n’aviez pas de Messie, vous étiez étrangers à la société israélite et aux alliances qui portaient la promesse de Dieu. Vous étiez dans ce monde sans Dieu ni espérance.
13 But now in Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far off have been brought close, by the blood of Christ.	13 Mais aujourd’hui vous êtes dans le Christ Jésus, et vous qui alors étiez loin, vous êtes devenus proches grâce au sang du Christ.
14 For he is the peace between us, and has made the two into one entity and broken down the barrierwhich used to keep them apart, by destroying in his own person the hostility,	14 Il est notre paix. Il a détruit le mur de séparation, la haine, et les deux mondes sont devenus un seul. Lorsqu’il a détruit dans son propre corps
15 that is, the Law of commandments with its decrees. His purpose in this was, by restoring peace, tocreate a single New Man out of the two of them,	15 la Loi avec ses commandements mis en formules, il a fait la paix; il a recréé en lui-même les deux peuples pour en faire un seul homme nouveau.
16 and through the cross, to reconcile them both to God in one Body; in his own person he kil ed thehostility.	16 Par la croix il a tué la haine: il a réconcilié avec Dieu les deux peuples devenus un seul corps.
17 He came to bring the good news of peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.	17 Il est venu annonçant la paix à vous qui étiez loin, et la paix aussi à ceux qui étaient proches.
18 Through him, then, we both in the one Spirit have free access to the Father.	18 Par lui nous venons au Père, les uns et les autres, dans un même Esprit.
19 So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fel ow-citizens with the holy people of God andpart of God's household.	19 Vous n’êtes donc plus des étrangers ou des gens qu’on accueille, vous êtes des citoyens de la cité des saints et vous êtes de la maison de Dieu.
20 You are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, and Christ Jesus himself is thecornerstone.	20 Vous êtes pris dans la construction, sur ces fondations que sont les apôtres et les prophètes; et le Christ Jésus en est lui-même la pierre d’angle.
21 Every structure knit together in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord;	21 En lui les éléments s’adaptent l’un à l’autre et la construction tout entière s’élève jusqu’à devenir un temple saint dans le Seigneur.
22 and you too, in him, are being built up into a dwelling-place of God in the Spirit.	22 En lui vous vous construisez ensemble pour être une demeure spirituelle de Dieu.
