Ephesians 2

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 And you were dead, through the crimes and the sins	1 Et vous qui étiez morts par suite des fautes et des péchés
2 which used to make up your way of life when you were living by the principles of this world, obeying theruler who dominates the air, the spirit who is at work in those who rebel.	2 dans lesquels vous avez vécu jadis, selon le cours de ce monde, selon le Prince de l'empire del'air, cet Esprit qui poursuit son oeuvre en ceux qui résistent...
3 We too were al among them once, living only by our natural inclinations, obeying the demands ofhuman self-indulgence and our own whim; our nature made us no less liable to God's retribution than the rest ofthe world.	3 Nous tous d'ailleurs, nous fûmes jadis de ceux-là, vivant selon nos convoitises charnelles, servantles caprices de la chair et des pensées coupables, si bien que nous étions par nature voués à la colère tout commeles autres...
4 But God, being rich in faithful love, through the great love with which he loved us,	4 Mais Dieu, qui est riche en miséricorde, à cause du grand amour dont Il nous a aimés,
5 even when we were dead in our sins, brought us to life with Christ -- it is through grace that you havebeen saved-	5 alors que nous étions morts par suite de nos fautes, nous a fait revivre avec le Christ - c'est pargrâce que vous êtes sauvés! --
6 and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus.	6 avec lui Il nous a ressuscités et fait asseoir aux cieux, dans le Christ Jésus.
7 This was to show for al ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, howextraordinarily rich he is in grace.	7 Il a voulu par là démontrer dans les siècles à venir l'extraordinaire richesse de sa grâce, par sabonté pour nous dans le Christ Jésus.
8 Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by agift from God;	8 Car c'est bien par la grâce que vous êtes sauvés, moyennant la foi. Ce salut ne vient pas de vous,il est un don de Dieu;
9 not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit.	9 il ne vient pas des oeuvres, car nul ne doit pouvoir se glorifier.
10 We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has alreadydesignated to make up our way of life.	10 Nous sommes en effet son ouvrage, créés dans le Christ Jésus en vue des bonnes oeuvres queDieu a préparées d'avance pour que nous les pratiquions.
11 Do not forget, then, that there was a time when you who were gentiles by physical descent, termed theuncircumcised by those who speak of themselves as the circumcised by reason of a physical operation,	11 Rappelez-vous donc qu'autrefois, vous les païens - qui étiez tels dans la chair, vous qui étiezappelés "prépuce" par ceux qui s'appellent "circoncision",... d'une opération pratiquée dans la chair! --
12 do not forget, I say, that you were at that time separate from Christ and excluded from membership ofIsrael, aliens with no part in the covenants of the Promise, limited to this world, without hope and without God.	12 rappelez-vous qu'en ce temps-là vous étiez sans Christ, exclus de la cité d'Israël, étrangers auxalliances de la Promesse, n'ayant ni espérance ni Dieu en ce monde!
13 But now in Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far off have been brought close, by the blood of Christ.	13 Or voici qu'à présent, dans le Christ Jésus, vous qui jadis étiez loin, vous êtes devenus proches,grâce au sang du Christ.
14 For he is the peace between us, and has made the two into one entity and broken down the barrierwhich used to keep them apart, by destroying in his own person the hostility,	14 Car c'est lui qui est notre paix, lui qui des deux peuples n'en a fait qu'un, détruisant la barrièrequi les séparait, supprimant en sa chair la haine,
15 that is, the Law of commandments with its decrees. His purpose in this was, by restoring peace, tocreate a single New Man out of the two of them,	15 cette Loi des préceptes avec ses ordonnances, pour créer en sa personne les deux en un seulHomme Nouveau, faire la paix,
16 and through the cross, to reconcile them both to God in one Body; in his own person he kil ed thehostility.	16 et les réconcilier avec Dieu, tous deux en un seul Corps, par la Croix: en sa personne il a tué laHaine.
17 He came to bring the good news of peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.	17 Alors il est venu proclamer la paix, paix pour vous qui étiez loin et paix pour ceux qui étaientproches:
18 Through him, then, we both in the one Spirit have free access to the Father.	18 par lui nous avons en effet, tous deux en un seul Esprit, libre accès auprès du Père.
19 So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fel ow-citizens with the holy people of God andpart of God's household.	19 Ainsi donc, vous n'êtes plus des étrangers ni des hôtes; vous êtes concitoyens des saints, vousêtes de la maison de Dieu.
20 You are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, and Christ Jesus himself is thecornerstone.	20 Car la construction que vous êtes a pour fondations les apôtres et prophètes, et pour pierred'angle le Christ Jésus lui-même.
21 Every structure knit together in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord;	21 En lui toute construction s'ajuste et grandit en un temple saint, dans le Seigneur;
22 and you too, in him, are being built up into a dwelling-place of God in the Spirit.	22 en lui, vous aussi, vous êtes intégrés à la construction pour devenir une demeure de Dieu, dansl'Esprit.
