NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.	1 Festo dunque, giunto nella provincia, tre giorni dopo salì da Cesarea a Gerusalemme,
2 The chief priests and leaders of the Jews informed him of the case against Paul,	2 e comparvero davanti a lui i sommi sacerdoti e i principali dei Giudei, portando accuse contro Paolo. Lo pregavano
3 urgently asking him to support them against him, and to have him transferred to Jerusalem. They werepreparing an ambush to murder him on the way.	3 chiedendogli il favore, in odio a Paolo, che lo facesse trasportare a Gerusalemme, per tendergli un agguato e ucciderlo durante il percorso.
4 But Festus replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he would be going back there shortlyhimself.	4 Festo rispose che Paolo era in prigione a Cesarea e che egli stesso sarebbe partito tra poco:
5 He said, 'Let your authorities come down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, theycan bring a charge against him.'	5 "Quelli dunque tra voi -- disse -- che hanno autorità, scendano con me, e se c'è in quell'uomo qualche colpa depongano contro di lui".
6 After staying with them for eight or ten days at the most, he went down to Caesarea and the next dayhe took his seat on the tribunal and had Paul brought in.	6 Dopo essersi fermato tra loro non più di otto o dieci giorni, scese a Cesarea e il giorno dopo sedette in tribunale e comandò che gli fosse portato Paolo.
7 As soon as Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, makingmany serious accusations which they were unable to substantiate.	7 Quando arrivò, i Giudei che erano discesi da Gerusalemme gli si fecero intorno, producendo molte e gravi accuse, che non potevano dimostrare.
8 Paul's defence was this, 'I have committed no offence whatever against either Jewish law, or theTemple, or Caesar.'	8 Paolo si difendeva affermando: "Non ho peccato né contro la legge dei Giudei né contro il tempio né contro Cesare".
9 Festus was anxious to gain favour with the Jews, so he said to Paul, 'Are you wil ing to go up toJerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?'	9 Allora Festo, volendo far cosa gradita ai Giudei, rivoltosi a Paolo gli domandò: "Vuoi salire in Gerusalemme e là essere giudicato di fronte a me riguardo a queste cose?".
10 But Paul replied, 'I am standing before the tribunal of Caesar and this is where I should be tried. Ihave done the Jews no wrong, as you very wel know.	10 Ma Paolo replicò: "Sto dinanzi al tribunale di Cesare e qui mi si deve giudicare. Non ho fatto alcun torto ai Giudei, come anche tu sai molto bene.
11 If I am guilty of committing any capital crime, I do not ask to be spared the death penalty. But if thereis no substance in the accusations these persons bring against me, no one has a right to surrender me to them. Iappeal to Caesar.'	11 Se dunque ho commesso qualche ingiustizia o qualche delitto che merita la morte, non ricuso di morire; ma se non vi è nulla di ciò di cui essi mi accusano, nessuno può consegnarmi ad essi. Mi appello a Cesare".
12 Then Festus conferred with his advisers and replied, 'You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar youshall go.'	12 Allora Festo, dopo aver conferito con il suo consiglio, disse: "Hai appellato a Cesare, a Cesare andrai".
13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus.	13 Passati alcuni giorni, il re Agrippa e Berenice discesero a Cesarea e vennero a salutare Festo.
14 Their visit lasted several days, and Festus put Paul's case before the king, saying, 'There is a manhere whom Felix left behind in custody,	14 E poiché vi si trattenevano alcuni giorni, Festo espose al re il caso di Paolo, dicendo: "C'è un uomo che è stato lasciato in prigione da Felice.
15 and while I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and elders of the Jews laid information against him,demanding his condemnation.	15 Quando sono stato a Gerusalemme, sono comparsi i sommi sacerdoti e gli anziani dei Giudei portando accuse contro di lui e chiedendo la sua condanna.
16 But I told them that Romans are not in the habit of surrendering any man, until the accused confrontshis accusers and is given an opportunity to defend himself against the charge.	16 Io risposi loro che non è costume dei Romani consegnare un uomo prima che l'accusato sia stato messo a confronto con gli accusatori e abbia avuto la possibilità di difendersi dalle accuse.
17 So they came here with me, and I wasted no time but took my seat on the tribunal the very next dayand had the man brought in.	17 Allora essi si radunarono qui e, senza por tempo in mezzo, l'indomani mi sedetti in tribunale e feci condurre quest'uomo.
18 When confronted with him, his accusers did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected;	18 Messi alla sua presenza, gli accusatori non portarono nessuna accusa di alcuno di quei delitti che io potessi sospettare.
19 but they had some argument or other with him about their own religion and about a dead man cal edJesus whom Paul al eged to be alive.	19 Avevano con lui soltanto delle contestazioni su punti della loro religione, e riguardo a un certo Gesù, morto, che Paolo asseriva essere vivo.
20 Not feeling qualified to deal with questions of this sort, I asked him if he would be wil ing to go toJerusalem to be tried there on this issue.	20 Trovandomi imbarazzato davanti a una controversia come questa, gli chiesi se voleva andare a Gerusalemme e là essere giudicato riguardo a queste cose.
21 But Paul put in an appeal for his case to be reserved for the judgement of the emperor, so I orderedhim to be remanded until I could send him to Caesar.'	21 Ma avendo Paolo interposto appello per essere riservato al giudizio di Augusto, comandai che fosse custodito in prigione, finché non possa inviarlo a Cesare".
22 Agrippa said to Festus, 'I should like to hear the man myself.' He answered, 'Tomorrow you shal hearhim.'	22 Agrippa disse a Festo: "Vorrei anch'io ascoltare quest'uomo". "Domani -- disse -- lo ascolterai".
23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived in great state and entered the audience chamberattended by the tribunes and the city notables; and Festus ordered Paul to be brought in.	23 Il giorno dopo Agrippa e Berenice vennero con grande pompa e, quando furono entrati nella sala delle udienze con i tribuni e i personaggi eminenti della città, Festo comandò di condurre Paolo.
24 Then Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all here present with us, you see before you the man aboutwhom the whole Jewish community has petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, loudly protesting that heought not to be allowed to remain alive.	24 Allora Festo disse: "Re Agrippa e voi tutti che siete qui presenti, voi vedete colui per il quale tutta la moltitudine dei Giudei si è rivolta a me, tanto a Gerusalemme come qui, gridando che costui non deve più vivere.
25 For my own part I am satisfied that he has committed no capital crime, but when he himself appealedto the emperor I decided to send him.	25 Ma io ho accertato che egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte. Ma poiché egli stesso si è appellato ad Augusto, ho deciso di inviarglielo.
26 But I have nothing definite that I can write to his Imperial Majesty about him; that is why I haveproduced him before you all, and before you in particular, King Agrippa, so that after the examination I may havesomething to write.	26 Sul suo conto non ho nulla di preciso da scrivere all'imperatore. Perciò l'ho condotto di fronte a voi, e soprattutto di fronte a te, o re Agrippa, perché dopo questa interrogazione io abbia qualcosa da scrivere.
27 It seems to me pointless to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.'	27 Mi sembra infatti assurdo mandare un prigioniero senza indicare anche le accuse fatte a suo carico".
