1 Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.	1 Festo adunque entrato nella provincia, tre giorni dopo andò da Cesarea a Gerusalemme.
2 The chief priests and leaders of the Jews informed him of the case against Paul,	2 E comparvero dinanzi a lui i principi de' sacerdoti, e i più ragguardevoli Giudei contro Paolo: e lo pregavano,
3 urgently asking him to support them against him, and to have him transferred to Jerusalem. They werepreparing an ambush to murder him on the way.	3 Chiedendogli grazia contro di lui, che comandasse di farlo condurre in Gerusalemme, tendendogli insidie per ammazzarlo nel viaggio.
4 But Festus replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he would be going back there shortlyhimself.	4 Ma Pesto rispose, che Paolo era custodito in Cesarea: e che egli stesso partirebbe in breve.
5 He said, 'Let your authorities come down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, theycan bring a charge against him.'	5 Quegli adunque (disse egli) di voi, che possono farlo, vengano insieme, e se alcun delitto è in quest' uomo, lo accusino.
6 After staying with them for eight or ten days at the most, he went down to Caesarea and the next dayhe took his seat on the tribunal and had Paul brought in.	6 Ed essendo restato tra di loro non più di otto, o dieci giorni andò a Cesarea, e il dì seguente sedendo a tribunale, ordinò, che fosse condotto Paolo.
7 As soon as Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, makingmany serious accusations which they were unable to substantiate.	7 Ed essendo egli stato condotto, lo circondarono que' Giudei, che eran venuti da Gerusalemme, portando molte, e gravi accuse contro di Paolo, le quali non potevano provare.
8 Paul's defence was this, 'I have committed no offence whatever against either Jewish law, or theTemple, or Caesar.'	8 Defendendosi Paolo con dire: non ho niente peccato né contro la legge de' Giudei, né contro il tempio, né contro Cesare.
9 Festus was anxious to gain favour with the Jews, so he said to Paul, 'Are you wil ing to go up toJerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?'	9 Ma Festo volendo far cosa grata ai Giudei, rispose a Paolo, e disse: vuoi tu venire a Gerusalemme, e quivi esser sopra queste cose giudicato dinanzi a me?
10 But Paul replied, 'I am standing before the tribunal of Caesar and this is where I should be tried. Ihave done the Jews no wrong, as you very wel know.	10 Ma Paolo disse: sto dinanzi al tribunale di Cesare, ivi fa di mestieri, ch'io sia giudicato. A' Giudei non ho fatto torto, come tu sai benissimo.
11 If I am guilty of committing any capital crime, I do not ask to be spared the death penalty. But if thereis no substance in the accusations these persons bring against me, no one has a right to surrender me to them. Iappeal to Caesar.'	11 Imperocché sebo fatto torto, o se ho fatta cosa degna di morte, nun ricuso di morire: che se non è nulla di tutto quello, onde questi mi accusano, nissuno può ad essi donarmi. Appello a Cesare.
12 Then Festus conferred with his advisers and replied, 'You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar youshall go.'	12 Allora Festo avendone discorso in consiglio, rispose: Hai appellato a Cesare? A Cesare andrai.
13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus.	13 E passati alcuni giorni, il re Agrippa, e Berenice si portaron a Cesarea per salutare Festo.
14 Their visit lasted several days, and Festus put Paul's case before the king, saying, 'There is a manhere whom Felix left behind in custody,	14 Ed essendovisi trettenuti per vari giorni, Festo parlò di Paolo al re, dicendo: Havvi un cert'uomo lasciato in catene da Felice,
15 and while I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and elders of the Jews laid information against him,demanding his condemnation.	15 Per cagion del quale, essendo io a Gerusalemme, venner a trovarmi i principi de' sacerdoti, e i seniori de' Giudei, chiedendo, ch'ci fosse condannato.
16 But I told them that Romans are not in the habit of surrendering any man, until the accused confrontshis accusers and is given an opportunity to defend himself against the charge.	16 A' quali io risposi: Non esser costume de' Romani di condannare alcun uomo prima, che l'accusato abbia presenti gli accusatori, e gli sia dato luogo di difesa per purgarsi dalle accuse.
17 So they came here with me, and I wasted no time but took my seat on the tribunal the very next dayand had the man brought in.	17 Eglino adunque essendo immediatamente concorsi qua il dì vegnente, sedendo a tribunale ordinai, che fosse condotto quell'uomo.
18 When confronted with him, his accusers did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected;	18 Di cui presentatisi gli accusatori non gli opponevano delitto alcuno di quelli, che io sospettava:
19 but they had some argument or other with him about their own religion and about a dead man cal edJesus whom Paul al eged to be alive.	19 Ma aveano alcune dispute contro di lui intorno alla loro superstizione, e intorno a un certo Gesù morto, che Paolo diceva esser vivo.
20 Not feeling qualified to deal with questions of this sort, I asked him if he would be wil ing to go toJerusalem to be tried there on this issue.	20 E stando io irresoluto sopra tal questione io diceva, se avesse voluto andare a Gerusalemme, ed ivi eser giudicato sopra queste cose.
21 But Paul put in an appeal for his case to be reserved for the judgement of the emperor, so I orderedhim to be remanded until I could send him to Caesar.'	21 Ma avendo Paolo interposto appello, affine di essere riserbato al giudizio di Augusto, ordinai, che fosse custodito sino a tanto, che io lo mandi a Cesare.
22 Agrippa said to Festus, 'I should like to hear the man myself.' He answered, 'Tomorrow you shal hearhim.'	22 E Agrippa disse a Festo: Ancor io bramerei di sentire quest' uomo. E quegli: Domane, disse, lo sentirai.
23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived in great state and entered the audience chamberattended by the tribunes and the city notables; and Festus ordered Paul to be brought in.	23 E il di seguente essendo andati Agrippa, e Berenice con molta magnificenza, ed entrati nell'uditorio co' tribuni, e colle persone principali della città, fu per ordine di Festo condotto Paolo.
24 Then Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all here present with us, you see before you the man aboutwhom the whole Jewish community has petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, loudly protesting that heought not to be allowed to remain alive.	24 E Festo disse: Agrippa re, e voi tutti, che siete qui insieme con noi, voi vedete quest' uomo, contro del quale tutta la moltitudine de' Giudei ha fatto ricorso a me in Gerusalemme, gridando, che non conviene, ch'ei viva più.
25 For my own part I am satisfied that he has committed no capital crime, but when he himself appealedto the emperor I decided to send him.	25 Io però ho riconosciuto, che non ha fatto nulla, che meriti morte. Ma avendo egli stesso appellato ad Augusto, ho determinato di mandarglielo.
26 But I have nothing definite that I can write to his Imperial Majesty about him; that is why I haveproduced him before you all, and before you in particular, King Agrippa, so that after the examination I may havesomething to write.	26 Intorno ai quale nulla ho di certo da scrivere al Signore. Per la qual cosa l'ho fatto venire dinanzi a voi, e principalmente dinanzi a te, o re Agrippa, affinché disaminatolo io abbia qualche cosa da scrivere.
27 It seems to me pointless to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.'	27 Imperocché contro ogni ragione mi sembra mandare un uomo legato, senza accennare i motivi.
