NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.	1 Tres días después de haberse hecho cargo de su provincia, Festo subió de Cesarea a Jerusalén.
2 The chief priests and leaders of the Jews informed him of the case against Paul,	2 Los sumos sacerdotes y los judíos más importantes acusaron entonces a Pablo en su presencia,
3 urgently asking him to support them against him, and to have him transferred to Jerusalem. They werepreparing an ambush to murder him on the way.	3 y le pidieron la gracia de que lo hiciera trasladar a Jerusalén. En realidad preparaban una emboscada para matarlo en el camino.
4 But Festus replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he would be going back there shortlyhimself.	4 Pero Festo respondió que Pablo debía quedar bajo custodia en Cesarea, y que él mismo iría allí inmediatamente.
5 He said, 'Let your authorities come down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, theycan bring a charge against him.'	5 «Que los de más autoridad entre ustedes, añadió, vengan conmigo y presenten su acusación, si tienen algo contra él».
6 After staying with them for eight or ten days at the most, he went down to Caesarea and the next dayhe took his seat on the tribunal and had Paul brought in.	6 Festo permaneció en Jerusalén unos ocho o diez días, y luego bajó a Cesarea. Al día siguiente, se sentó en el tribunal e hizo comparecer a Pablo.
7 As soon as Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, makingmany serious accusations which they were unable to substantiate.	7 En cuanto llegó, los judíos venidos de Jerusalén lo rodearon, y presentaron contra él numerosas y graves acusaciones que no podían probar.
8 Paul's defence was this, 'I have committed no offence whatever against either Jewish law, or theTemple, or Caesar.'	8 Pablo se defendía diciendo: «Yo no he cometido ninguna falta contra la Ley de los judíos, ni contra el Templo, ni contra el Emperador».
9 Festus was anxious to gain favour with the Jews, so he said to Paul, 'Are you wil ing to go up toJerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?'	9 Festo, queriendo congraciarse con los judíos, se dirigió a Pablo y le dijo: «¿Quieres subir a Jerusalén para ser juzgado allí en mi presencia?».
10 But Paul replied, 'I am standing before the tribunal of Caesar and this is where I should be tried. Ihave done the Jews no wrong, as you very wel know.	10 Pablo respondió: «Estoy delante del tribunal del Emperador, y es aquí donde debo ser juzgado. Yo no hice ningún mal a los judíos, como tú lo sabes perfectamente.
11 If I am guilty of committing any capital crime, I do not ask to be spared the death penalty. But if thereis no substance in the accusations these persons bring against me, no one has a right to surrender me to them. Iappeal to Caesar.'	11 Si soy culpable y he cometido algún delito que merezca la muerte, no me niego a morir, pero si las acusaciones que hacen los judíos contra mí carecen de fundamento, nadie tiene el derecho de entregarme a ellos. Apelo al Emperador».
12 Then Festus conferred with his advisers and replied, 'You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar youshall go.'	12 Festo, después de haber consultado con su Consejo, respondió: «Ya que apelaste al Emperador, comparecerás ante él».
13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus.	13 Algunos días más tarde, el rey Agripa y Berenice llegaron a Cesarea y fueron a saludar a Festo.
14 Their visit lasted several days, and Festus put Paul's case before the king, saying, 'There is a manhere whom Felix left behind in custody,	14 Como ellos permanecieron varios días, Festo expuso al rey el caso de Pablo, diciéndole: «Félix ha dejado a un prisionero,
15 and while I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and elders of the Jews laid information against him,demanding his condemnation.	15 y durante mi estadía en Jerusalén, los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos de los judíos, presentaron quejas pidiendo su condena.
16 But I told them that Romans are not in the habit of surrendering any man, until the accused confrontshis accusers and is given an opportunity to defend himself against the charge.	16 Yo les respondí que los romanos no tienen la costumbre de entregar a un hombre antes de enfrentarlo con sus acusadores y darle la oportunidad de defenderse.
17 So they came here with me, and I wasted no time but took my seat on the tribunal the very next dayand had the man brought in.	17 Ellos vinieron aquí, y sin ninguna demora, me senté en el tribunal e hice comparecer a ese hombre al día siguiente.
18 When confronted with him, his accusers did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected;	18 Pero cuando se presentaron los acusadores, estos no alegaron contra él ninguno de los cargos que yo sospechaba.
19 but they had some argument or other with him about their own religion and about a dead man cal edJesus whom Paul al eged to be alive.	19 Lo que había entre ellos eran no sé qué discusiones sobre su religión, y sobre un tal Jesús que murió y que Pablo asegura que vive.
20 Not feeling qualified to deal with questions of this sort, I asked him if he would be wil ing to go toJerusalem to be tried there on this issue.	20 No sabiendo bien qué partido tomar en un asunto de esta índole le pregunté a Pablo si quería ir a Jerusalén para ser juzgado allí.
21 But Paul put in an appeal for his case to be reserved for the judgement of the emperor, so I orderedhim to be remanded until I could send him to Caesar.'	21 Pero como este apeló al juicio de Su Majestad imperial, yo ordené que lo dejaran bajo custodia hasta que lo enviara al Emperador».
22 Agrippa said to Festus, 'I should like to hear the man myself.' He answered, 'Tomorrow you shal hearhim.'	22 Agripa dijo entonces a Festo: «A mí también me gustaría escuchar a ese hombre». «Mañana lo escucharás», respondió Festo.
23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived in great state and entered the audience chamberattended by the tribunes and the city notables; and Festus ordered Paul to be brought in.	23 Al día siguiente, Agripa y Berenice llegaron con gran pompa y entraron en la sala de audiencias, rodeados de los tribunos y de los hombres más importantes de la ciudad. A una orden de Festo, trajeron a Pablo.
24 Then Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all here present with us, you see before you the man aboutwhom the whole Jewish community has petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, loudly protesting that heought not to be allowed to remain alive.	24 Festo tomó la palabra, diciendo: «Rey Agripa y todos los que están aquí presentes, ustedes ven a este hombre, por quien toda la comunidad judía ha venido a verme, tanto aquí como en Jerusalén, insistiendo a gritos que no había que dejarlo vivir más.
25 For my own part I am satisfied that he has committed no capital crime, but when he himself appealedto the emperor I decided to send him.	25 Yo no he encontrado en él nada que merezca la muerte; pero ya que él mismo ha apelado al Emperador, he decidido enviárselo.
26 But I have nothing definite that I can write to his Imperial Majesty about him; that is why I haveproduced him before you all, and before you in particular, King Agrippa, so that after the examination I may havesomething to write.	26 Como no tengo nada preciso que escribir sobre él al Soberano, lo hice comparecer ante ustedes, especialmente ante ti, rey Agripa; así, después de este interrogatorio, yo tendré algo para informar.
27 It seems to me pointless to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.'	27 Porque me parece absurdo enviar a un prisionero, sin indicar al mismo tiempo los cargos que se le imputan».
