1 Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.	1 Trois jours après son arrivée dans la province, Festus monta de Césarée à Jérusalem.
2 The chief priests and leaders of the Jews informed him of the case against Paul,	2 Les grands prêtres et les notables des Juifs vinrent donc lui présenter leurs accusations contre Paul. Ils insistèrent
3 urgently asking him to support them against him, and to have him transferred to Jerusalem. They werepreparing an ambush to murder him on the way.	3 et demandèrent à Festus de leur faire cette faveur de renvoyer Paul à Jérusalem; ils avaient toujours leur plan de le tuer sur le trajet.
4 But Festus replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he would be going back there shortlyhimself.	4 Festus répondit que Paul était détenu à Césarée et que lui-même devait s’y rendre sous peu.
5 He said, 'Let your authorities come down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, theycan bring a charge against him.'	5 Il leur dit: "Ceux d’entre vous qui ont les responsabilités descendront avec moi et feront valoir contre lui ce qu’il a fait de condamnable.”
6 After staying with them for eight or ten days at the most, he went down to Caesarea and the next dayhe took his seat on the tribunal and had Paul brought in.	6 Festus ne resta chez eux que quelque huit ou dix jours. Il descendit à Césarée, et le lendemain il siégeait à son tribunal. Il ordonna d’amener Paul.
7 As soon as Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, makingmany serious accusations which they were unable to substantiate.	7 Dès qu’il fut arrivé, les Juifs qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem l’assaillirent avec quantité d’accusations graves qu’ils étaient incapables de prouver.
8 Paul's defence was this, 'I have committed no offence whatever against either Jewish law, or theTemple, or Caesar.'	8 Paul se défendit: "Je n’ai rien commis qui offense la loi juive, ou le Temple, ou l’empereur.”
9 Festus was anxious to gain favour with the Jews, so he said to Paul, 'Are you wil ing to go up toJerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?'	9 Mais Festus voulait faire un cadeau aux Juifs. Il intervint pour demander à Paul: "Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem si c’est moi qui suis là-bas ton juge?”
10 But Paul replied, 'I am standing before the tribunal of Caesar and this is where I should be tried. Ihave done the Jews no wrong, as you very wel know.	10 Paul répondit: "Je suis sous la juridiction de César, et c’est lui qui doit me juger. Je n’ai pas fait de tort aux Juifs, tu le sais parfaitement.
11 If I am guilty of committing any capital crime, I do not ask to be spared the death penalty. But if thereis no substance in the accusations these persons bring against me, no one has a right to surrender me to them. Iappeal to Caesar.'	11 Si j’ai commis une injustice, un crime qui mérite la mort, très bien, que je meure. Mais si rien n’est vrai de toutes leurs accusations, personne ne peut me céder à eux. J’en appelle à César.”
12 Then Festus conferred with his advisers and replied, 'You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar youshall go.'	12 Festus eut alors un entretien avec son conseil, après quoi il déclara: "Tu as fait appel à César, tu iras à César.”
13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus.	13 Quelques jours plus tard, le roi Agrippa arrivait à Césarée accompagné de Bérénice; ils venaient saluer Festus.
14 Their visit lasted several days, and Festus put Paul's case before the king, saying, 'There is a manhere whom Felix left behind in custody,	14 Ils s’arrêtèrent là plusieurs jours et Festus soumit au roi le cas de Paul. "Il y a ici, lui dit-il, un homme que Félix a laissé en captivité.
15 and while I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and elders of the Jews laid information against him,demanding his condemnation.	15 Quand je me suis trouvé à Jérusalem, les grands prêtres et les Anciens des Juifs sont venus me trouver pour me réclamer sa condamnation.
16 But I told them that Romans are not in the habit of surrendering any man, until the accused confrontshis accusers and is given an opportunity to defend himself against the charge.	16 Je leur ai répondu que ce n’est pas la coutume des Romains de livrer quelqu’un tant que l’accusé n’a pas eu devant lui ses accusateurs avec la possibilité de se défendre de ce dont on l’accuse.
17 So they came here with me, and I wasted no time but took my seat on the tribunal the very next dayand had the man brought in.	17 “Ils m’ont donc accompagné ici et, dès le lendemain, sans traîner, j’ai siégé au tribunal et j’ai fait appeler l’homme.
18 When confronted with him, his accusers did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected;	18 Ses accusateurs ont présenté leurs charges, mais ils n’ont fait état d’aucune faute comme je pouvais imaginer.
19 but they had some argument or other with him about their own religion and about a dead man cal edJesus whom Paul al eged to be alive.	19 Ce n’étaient que des discussions relatives à leurs croyances et à un certain Jésus qui est mort et dont Paul affirme qu’il est vivant.
20 Not feeling qualified to deal with questions of this sort, I asked him if he would be wil ing to go toJerusalem to be tried there on this issue.	20 “Comme j’étais perdu dans une discussion de ce genre, je lui ai demandé s’il voulait faire le voyage de Jérusalem et qu’on fasse là-bas son procès sur de telles questions.
21 But Paul put in an appeal for his case to be reserved for the judgement of the emperor, so I orderedhim to be remanded until I could send him to Caesar.'	21 Mais Paul a fait appel; il a demandé que l’instruction de son procès soit confiée au tribunal de l’empereur. J’ai donc donné l’ordre de le garder jusqu’à ce que je puisse l’envoyer à César.”
22 Agrippa said to Festus, 'I should like to hear the man myself.' He answered, 'Tomorrow you shal hearhim.'	22 Agrippa dit à Festus: "J’aimerais moi aussi entendre cet homme.” L’autre répondit: "Tu l’entendras demain.”
23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived in great state and entered the audience chamberattended by the tribunes and the city notables; and Festus ordered Paul to be brought in.	23 Le lendemain, Agrippa vient avec Bérénice, faisant tout un étalage. Ils entrent dans la salle d’audience où sont réunis les officiers supérieurs et les autorités de la ville, puis Festus donne un ordre et on amène Paul.
24 Then Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all here present with us, you see before you the man aboutwhom the whole Jewish community has petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, loudly protesting that heought not to be allowed to remain alive.	24 Alors Festus prend la parole: "Roi Agrippa, et vous tous, messieurs qui êtes ici présents, vous avez devant vous cet homme au sujet duquel toute la communauté juive est venue me solliciter, à Jérusalem et ici-même. Ils me criaient aux oreilles: ‘Cet homme n’a plus le droit de vivre!’
25 For my own part I am satisfied that he has committed no capital crime, but when he himself appealedto the emperor I decided to send him.	25 “Pour moi, j’ai établi qu’il n’a rien fait qui mérite la mort, et comme lui faisait appel à l’empereur, j’ai décidé de l’envoyer.
26 But I have nothing definite that I can write to his Imperial Majesty about him; that is why I haveproduced him before you all, and before you in particular, King Agrippa, so that after the examination I may havesomething to write.	26 Mais je n’ai rien de sûr que je puisse mettre par écrit pour notre Seigneur. Je vous le présente donc à tous, et spécialement à toi, roi Agrippa, de façon à pouvoir écrire quelques mots quand on verra mieux les choses.
27 It seems to me pointless to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.'	27 Car je ne me vois pas envoyant un prisonnier sans dire de quoi on l’accuse.”
