1 Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.	1 Festo dunque, raggiunta la provincia, tre giorni dopo salì da Cesarèa a Gerusalemme.
2 The chief priests and leaders of the Jews informed him of the case against Paul,	2 I capi dei sacerdoti e i notabili dei Giudei si presentarono a lui per accusare Paolo, e lo pregavano,
3 urgently asking him to support them against him, and to have him transferred to Jerusalem. They werepreparing an ambush to murder him on the way.	3 chiedendolo come un favore, in odio a Paolo, che lo facesse venire a Gerusalemme; e intanto preparavano un agguato per ucciderlo lungo il percorso.
4 But Festus replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he would be going back there shortlyhimself.	4 Festo rispose che Paolo stava sotto custodia a Cesarèa e che egli stesso sarebbe partito di lì a poco.
5 He said, 'Let your authorities come down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, theycan bring a charge against him.'	5 «Quelli dunque tra voi – disse – che hanno autorità, scendano con me e, se vi è qualche colpa in quell’uomo, lo accusino».
6 After staying with them for eight or ten days at the most, he went down to Caesarea and the next dayhe took his seat on the tribunal and had Paul brought in.	6 Dopo essersi trattenuto fra loro non più di otto o dieci giorni, scese a Cesarèa e il giorno seguente, sedendo in tribunale, ordinò che gli si conducesse Paolo.
7 As soon as Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, makingmany serious accusations which they were unable to substantiate.	7 Appena egli giunse, lo attorniarono i Giudei scesi da Gerusalemme, portando molte gravi accuse, senza però riuscire a provarle.
8 Paul's defence was this, 'I have committed no offence whatever against either Jewish law, or theTemple, or Caesar.'	8 Paolo disse a propria difesa: «Non ho commesso colpa alcuna, né contro la Legge dei Giudei né contro il tempio né contro Cesare».
9 Festus was anxious to gain favour with the Jews, so he said to Paul, 'Are you wil ing to go up toJerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?'	9 Ma Festo, volendo fare un favore ai Giudei, si rivolse a Paolo e disse: «Vuoi salire a Gerusalemme per essere giudicato là di queste cose, davanti a me?».
10 But Paul replied, 'I am standing before the tribunal of Caesar and this is where I should be tried. Ihave done the Jews no wrong, as you very wel know.	10 Paolo rispose: «Mi trovo davanti al tribunale di Cesare: qui mi si deve giudicare. Ai Giudei non ho fatto alcun torto, come anche tu sai perfettamente.
11 If I am guilty of committing any capital crime, I do not ask to be spared the death penalty. But if thereis no substance in the accusations these persons bring against me, no one has a right to surrender me to them. Iappeal to Caesar.'	11 Se dunque sono in colpa e ho commesso qualche cosa che meriti la morte, non rifiuto di morire; ma se nelle accuse di costoro non c’è nulla di vero, nessuno ha il potere di consegnarmi a loro. Io mi appello a Cesare».
12 Then Festus conferred with his advisers and replied, 'You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar youshall go.'	12 Allora Festo, dopo aver discusso con il consiglio, rispose: «Ti sei appellato a Cesare, a Cesare andrai».
13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus.	13 Erano trascorsi alcuni giorni, quando arrivarono a Cesarèa il re Agrippa e Berenice e vennero a salutare Festo.
14 Their visit lasted several days, and Festus put Paul's case before the king, saying, 'There is a manhere whom Felix left behind in custody,	14 E poiché si trattennero parecchi giorni, Festo espose al re le accuse contro Paolo, dicendo: «C’è un uomo, lasciato qui prigioniero da Felice,
15 and while I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and elders of the Jews laid information against him,demanding his condemnation.	15 contro il quale, durante la mia visita a Gerusalemme, si presentarono i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani dei Giudei per chiederne la condanna.
16 But I told them that Romans are not in the habit of surrendering any man, until the accused confrontshis accusers and is given an opportunity to defend himself against the charge.	16 Risposi loro che i Romani non usano consegnare una persona, prima che l’accusato sia messo a confronto con i suoi accusatori e possa aver modo di difendersi dall’accusa.
17 So they came here with me, and I wasted no time but took my seat on the tribunal the very next dayand had the man brought in.	17 Allora essi vennero qui e io, senza indugi, il giorno seguente sedetti in tribunale e ordinai che vi fosse condotto quell’uomo.
18 When confronted with him, his accusers did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected;	18 Quelli che lo incolpavano gli si misero attorno, ma non portarono alcuna accusa di quei crimini che io immaginavo;
19 but they had some argument or other with him about their own religion and about a dead man cal edJesus whom Paul al eged to be alive.	19 avevano con lui alcune questioni relative alla loro religione e a un certo Gesù, morto, che Paolo sosteneva essere vivo.
20 Not feeling qualified to deal with questions of this sort, I asked him if he would be wil ing to go toJerusalem to be tried there on this issue.	20 Perplesso di fronte a simili controversie, chiesi se volesse andare a Gerusalemme e là essere giudicato di queste cose.
21 But Paul put in an appeal for his case to be reserved for the judgement of the emperor, so I orderedhim to be remanded until I could send him to Caesar.'	21 Ma Paolo si appellò perché la sua causa fosse riservata al giudizio di Augusto, e così ordinai che fosse tenuto sotto custodia fino a quando potrò inviarlo a Cesare».
22 Agrippa said to Festus, 'I should like to hear the man myself.' He answered, 'Tomorrow you shal hearhim.'	22 E Agrippa disse a Festo: «Vorrei anche io ascoltare quell’uomo!». «Domani – rispose – lo potrai ascoltare».
23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived in great state and entered the audience chamberattended by the tribunes and the city notables; and Festus ordered Paul to be brought in.	23 Il giorno dopo Agrippa e Berenice vennero con grande sfarzo ed entrarono nella sala dell’udienza, accompagnati dai comandanti e dai cittadini più in vista; per ordine di Festo fu fatto entrare Paolo.
24 Then Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all here present with us, you see before you the man aboutwhom the whole Jewish community has petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, loudly protesting that heought not to be allowed to remain alive.	24 Allora Festo disse: «Re Agrippa e tutti voi qui presenti con noi, voi avete davanti agli occhi colui riguardo al quale tutta la folla dei Giudei si è rivolta a me, in Gerusalemme e qui, per chiedere a gran voce che non resti più in vita.
25 For my own part I am satisfied that he has committed no capital crime, but when he himself appealedto the emperor I decided to send him.	25 Io però mi sono reso conto che egli non ha commesso alcuna cosa che meriti la morte. Ma poiché si è appellato ad Augusto, ho deciso di inviarlo a lui.
26 But I have nothing definite that I can write to his Imperial Majesty about him; that is why I haveproduced him before you all, and before you in particular, King Agrippa, so that after the examination I may havesomething to write.	26 Sul suo conto non ho nulla di preciso da scrivere al sovrano; per questo l’ho condotto davanti a voi e soprattutto davanti a te, o re Agrippa, per sapere, dopo questo interrogatorio, che cosa devo scrivere.
27 It seems to me pointless to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.'	27 Mi sembra assurdo infatti mandare un prigioniero, senza indicare le accuse che si muovono contro di lui».
