1 When we had at last torn ourselves away from them and put to sea, we set a straight course andarrived at Cos; the next day we reached Rhodes, and from there went on to Patara.	1 - Or dopo che ci fummo distaccati da loro, facemmo vela, e, per diritto corso, giungemmo a Coo, il giorno seguente a Rodi, e di lì a Pàtara;
2 Here we found a ship bound for Phoenicia, so we went on board and sailed in her.	2 dove, trovata una nave che faceva la traversata per la Fenicia, vi salimmo e partimmo.
3 After sighting Cyprus and leaving it to port, we sailed to Syria and put in at Tyre, since the ship was tounload her cargo there.	3 Giunti in vista di Cipro, lasciandola a sinistra, proseguimmo per la Siria e prendemmo terra a Tiro, perchè quivi la nave doveva lasciare il carico.
4 We sought out the disciples and stayed there a week. Speaking in the Spirit, they kept tel ing Paul notto go on to Jerusalem,	4 Vi rimanemmo sette giorni, avendo là trovati dei discepoli; i quali in virtù dello Spirito dicevano a Paolo di non salire a Gerusalemme.
5 but when our time was up we set off. Together with the women and children they all escorted us on ourway til we were out of the town. When we reached the beach, we knelt down and prayed;	5 Ma noi, come si fu al termine di que' giorni ci rimettemmo in viaggio accompagnati da tutti loro, con le mogli e i figliuoli sin fuori della città: e, postici in ginocchio sul lido, pregammo,
6 then, after saying good -- bye to each other, we went aboard and they returned home.	6 e ci salutammo scambievolmente; poi, noi salimmo sulla nave, e quelli se ne tornarono alle case loro.
7 The end of our voyage from Tyre came when we landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothersand stayed one day with them.	7 E noi, terminando la navigazione, da Tiro arrivammo a Tolemaide; e, salutati i fratelli stemmo un giorno con loro.
8 The next day we left and came to Caesarea. Here we cal ed on Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven,and stayed with him.	8 Ripartimmo il giorno seguente per Cesarea, dove, appena arrivati, entrammo in casa di Filippo l'evangelista, che era uno dei sette, rimanendo presso di lui.
9 He had four unmarried daughters who were prophets.	9 Egli aveva quattro figliuole vergini, che profetavano.
10 When we had been there several days a prophet called Agabus arrived from Judaea.	10 Stavamo lì da più giorni, quando ci arrivò dalla Giudea un certo profeta, per nome Agabo,
11 He came up to us, took Paul's belt and tied up his own feet and hands, and said, 'This is what theHoly Spirit says, "The man to whom this girdle belongs wil be tied up like this by the Jews in Jerusalem andhanded over to the gentiles." '	11 il quale, venuto da noi, prese la cintura di Paolo, se ne legò i piedi e le mani, e disse: «Ecco quel che afferma lo Spirito Santo: - In quel modo legheranno i Giudei a Gerusalemme l'uomo di cui è questa cintura, e lo daranno nelle mani de' Gentili -».
12 When we heard this, we and al the local people urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.	12 A udir questo, cominciammo, tanto noi quanto quelli del luogo, a pregarlo che non salisse a Gerusalemme.
13 To this he replied, 'What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For my part, I am ready notonly to be bound but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.'	13 Ma egli rispose: «Che fate, piangendo e afflingendomi il cuore così? Quanto a me, io son pronto, non solo a lasciarmi legare, ma anche a morire in Gerusalemme per il nome del Signore Gesù».
14 And so, as he would not be persuaded, we gave up the attempt, saying, 'The Lord's wil be done.'	14 E siccome non potevamo persuaderlo, ci quietammo dicendo: «Sia fatta la volontà del Signore».
15 After this we made our preparations and went on up to Jerusalem.	15 Dopo que' giorni, messici in ordine, salimmo a Gerusalemme.
16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and took us to the house of a Cypriot withwhom we were to lodge; he was cal ed Mnason and had been one of the earliest disciples.	16 E con noi vennero anche alcuni discepoli di Cesarea, che ci condussero da un certo Mnasone, di Cipro, antico discepolo, presso il quale dovevamo stare.
17 On our arrival in Jerusalem the brothers gave us a very warm welcome.	17 Giunti dunque a Gerusalemme, i fratelli ci accolsero con gioia.
18 The next day Paul went with us to visit James, and all the elders were present.	18 Ed il giorno dopo, Paolo si recò con noi da Giacomo; e ci si trovarono tutti gli anziani.
19 After greeting them he gave a detailed account of al that God had done among the gentiles throughhis ministry.	19 Paolo, dopo averli salutati, raccontò loro a una a una le cose che Dio aveva fatte per suo ministero tra' Gentili.
20 They gave glory to God when they heard this. Then they said, 'You see, brother, how thousands ofJews have now become believers, al of them staunch upholders of the Law;	20 Ed essi, uditele, glorificavano Dio. Poi dissero: «Fratello, tu vedi quante migliaia di Giudei si son convertiti alla fede; ma tutti sono zelanti della legge.
21 and what they have heard about you is that you instruct al Jews living among the gentiles to breakaway from Moses, authorising them not to circumcise their children or to fol ow the customary practices.	21 Or essi hanno udito che tu insegni a tutti i Giudei che sono tra i Gentili, a staccarsi da Mosè, dicendo di non circoncidere i figliuoli, e di non viver più secondo la consuetudine.
22 What is to be done? A crowd is sure to gather, for they wil hear that you have come.	22 Che fare? Certo, sapranno che sei arrivato; e si riuniranno in gran numero.
23 So this is what we suggest that you should do; we have four men here who are under a vow;	23 Fai dunque così come ti diciamo: Son presso di noi quattro uomini, che hanno fatto voto;
24 take these men along and be purified with them and pay al the expenses connected with the shavingof their heads. This wil let everyone know there is no truth in the reports they have heard about you, and thatyou too observe the Law by your way of life.	24 prendili con te, e purìficati con essi, pagando per loro perchè si radano il capo: così tutti sapranno che son false le cose udite intorno a te, bensì che anche tu cammini nell'osservanza della legge.
25 About the gentiles who have become believers, we have written giving them our decision that theymust abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from il icitmarriages.'	25 Quanto a' Gentili che han creduto, noi già scrivemmo che essi debbano astenersi dalle cose immolate agl'idoli, dal sangue, dal soffocato e dalla fornicazione».
26 So the next day Paul took the men along and was purified with them, and he visited the Temple togive notice of the time when the period of purification would be over and the offering would have to be presentedon behalf of each of them.	26 Allora Paolo prese con sè quegli uomini, e il giorno seguente, dopo essersi purificato con loro, entrò nel tempio per annunziare il compimento de' giorni della purificazione, fino a che si offrisse l'oblazione per ciascun di loro.
27 The seven days were nearly over when some Jews from Asia caught sight of him in the Temple andstirred up the crowd and seized him,	27 Si era quasi alla fine de' sette giorni, e i Giudei dell'Asia, visto lui nel tempio, si diedero ad aizzare tutto il popolo, e gli misero le mani addosso, gridando:
28 shouting, 'Men of Israel, help! This is the man who preaches to everyone everywhere against ourpeople, against the Law and against this place. He has even profaned this Holy Place by bringing Greeks intothe Temple.'	28 «Uomini israeliti, aiuto! Questo è l'uomo che va predicando a tutti e per tutto contro la nazione, contro la legge e contro questo luogo; egli ha perfino introdotto i Gentili nel tempio ed ha profanato questo santo luogo».
29 They had, in fact, previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him and thought that Paulhad brought him into the Temple.	29 Essi, di fatto, avevano già visto andar con lui Trofimo d'Efeso per la città, e pensavano che Paolo l'avesse fatto entrare nel tempio.
30 This roused the whole city; people came running from al sides; they seized Paul and dragged him outof the Temple, and the gates were closed behind them.	30 Tutta la città fu in rumore, e il popolo accorreva. Preso Paolo, lo trascinarono fuori; e le porte del tempio furon subito chiuse.
31 While they were setting about killing him, word reached the tribune of the cohort that there was tumultal over Jerusalem.	31 Mentre cercavano d'ucciderlo, giunse al tribuno della coorte la notizia che tutta Gerusalemme era sossopra.
32 He immediately called out soldiers and centurions and charged down on the crowd, who stoppedbeating Paul when they saw the tribune and the soldiers.	32 D'un subito, egli prese soldati e centurioni, e corse verso coloro; i quali, veduto il tribuno e i soldati, smisero di battere Paolo.
33 When the tribune came up he took Paul into custody, had him bound with two chains and enquiredwho he was and what he had done.	33 Allora il tribuno avvicinatosi, lo fece arrestare e stringere con due catene; poi chiese chi fosse e che avesse fatto.
34 People in the crowd called out different things, and since the noise made it impossible for him to getany positive information, the tribune ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress.	34 Nella folla, chi gridava una cosa, chi un'altra; e non riuscendo a capire il netto, comandò che fosse menato in fortezza.
35 When Paul reached the steps, the crowd became so violent that he had to be carried by the soldiers;	35 Ma, arrivato che fu alla scalinata, bisognò che fosse portato dai soldati, tanta era la violenza della folla,
36 and indeed the whole mob was after them, shouting, 'Do away with him!'	36 perchè la moltitudine del popolo lo seguiva gridando: «Ammazzalo!».
37 Just as Paul was being taken into the fortress, he asked the tribune if he could have a word with him.The tribune said, 'You speak Greek, then?	37 Stando per entrare in fortezza, Paolo chiese al tribuno: «Mi è permesso dirti alcunchè?». E quello rispose: «Sai il greco?
38 Aren't you the Egyptian who started the recent revolt and led those four thousand cut-throats out intothe desert?'	38 Dunque, non sei quell'Egiziano che nei giorni passati facesti un tumulto e conducesti nel deserto quattromila Sicari?».
39 'I?' said Paul, 'I am a Jew and a citizen of the wel -known city of Tarsus in Cilicia. Please give mepermission to speak to the people.'	39 Paolo replicò: «Io sono un Giudeo, di Tarso, cittadino di quella non oscura città di Cilicia; permettimi, ti prego, di parlare al popolo».
40 The man gave his consent and Paul, standing at the top of the steps, raised his hand to the people forsilence. A profound silence fol owed, and he started speaking to them in Hebrew.	40 E avendo colui acconsentito, Paolo, ritto in piè sulla scalinata, fece segno con la mano al popolo, e, fattosi gran silenzio, parlò loro in lingua ebraica così:
