1 When we had at last torn ourselves away from them and put to sea, we set a straight course andarrived at Cos; the next day we reached Rhodes, and from there went on to Patara.	1 Appena ci fummo separati da loro, salpammo e per la via diretta giungemmo a Cos, il giorno seguente a Rodi e di qui a Pàtara.
2 Here we found a ship bound for Phoenicia, so we went on board and sailed in her.	2 Trovata una nave che faceva la traversata per la Fenicia, vi salimmo e prendemmo il largo.
3 After sighting Cyprus and leaving it to port, we sailed to Syria and put in at Tyre, since the ship was tounload her cargo there.	3 Giunti in vista di Cipro, la lasciammo a sinistra e, navigando verso la Siria, sbarcammo a Tiro, dove la nave doveva scaricare.
4 We sought out the disciples and stayed there a week. Speaking in the Spirit, they kept tel ing Paul notto go on to Jerusalem,	4 Avendo trovato i discepoli, rimanemmo là una settimana, ed essi, per impulso dello Spirito, dicevano a Paolo di non salire a Gerusalemme.
5 but when our time was up we set off. Together with the women and children they all escorted us on ourway til we were out of the town. When we reached the beach, we knelt down and prayed;	5 Ma, quando furono passati quei giorni, uscimmo e ci mettemmo in viaggio, accompagnati da tutti loro, con mogli e figli, fino all’uscita della città. Inginocchiati sulla spiaggia, pregammo,
6 then, after saying good -- bye to each other, we went aboard and they returned home.	6 poi ci salutammo a vicenda; noi salimmo sulla nave ed essi tornarono alle loro case.
7 The end of our voyage from Tyre came when we landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothersand stayed one day with them.	7 Terminata la navigazione, da Tiro approdammo a Tolemàide; andammo a salutare i fratelli e restammo un giorno con loro.
8 The next day we left and came to Caesarea. Here we cal ed on Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven,and stayed with him.	8 Ripartiti il giorno seguente, giungemmo a Cesarèa; entrati nella casa di Filippo l’evangelista, che era uno dei Sette, restammo presso di lui.
9 He had four unmarried daughters who were prophets.	9 Egli aveva quattro figlie nubili, che avevano il dono della profezia.
10 When we had been there several days a prophet called Agabus arrived from Judaea.	10 Eravamo qui da alcuni giorni, quando scese dalla Giudea un profeta di nome Àgabo.
11 He came up to us, took Paul's belt and tied up his own feet and hands, and said, 'This is what theHoly Spirit says, "The man to whom this girdle belongs wil be tied up like this by the Jews in Jerusalem andhanded over to the gentiles." '	11 Egli venne da noi e, presa la cintura di Paolo, si legò i piedi e le mani e disse: «Questo dice lo Spirito Santo: l’uomo al quale appartiene questa cintura, i Giudei a Gerusalemme lo legheranno così e lo consegneranno nelle mani dei pagani».
12 When we heard this, we and al the local people urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.	12 All’udire queste cose, noi e quelli del luogo pregavamo Paolo di non salire a Gerusalemme.
13 To this he replied, 'What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For my part, I am ready notonly to be bound but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.'	13 Allora Paolo rispose: «Perché fate così, continuando a piangere e a spezzarmi il cuore? Io sono pronto non soltanto a essere legato, ma anche a morire a Gerusalemme per il nome del Signore Gesù».
14 And so, as he would not be persuaded, we gave up the attempt, saying, 'The Lord's wil be done.'	14 E poiché non si lasciava persuadere, smettemmo di insistere dicendo: «Sia fatta la volontà del Signore!».
15 After this we made our preparations and went on up to Jerusalem.	15 Dopo questi giorni, fatti i preparativi, salimmo a Gerusalemme.
16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and took us to the house of a Cypriot withwhom we were to lodge; he was cal ed Mnason and had been one of the earliest disciples.	16 Vennero con noi anche alcuni discepoli da Cesarèa, i quali ci condussero da un certo Mnasone di Cipro, discepolo della prima ora, dal quale ricevemmo ospitalità.
17 On our arrival in Jerusalem the brothers gave us a very warm welcome.	17 Arrivati a Gerusalemme, i fratelli ci accolsero festosamente.
18 The next day Paul went with us to visit James, and all the elders were present.	18 Il giorno dopo Paolo fece visita a Giacomo insieme con noi; c’erano anche tutti gli anziani.
19 After greeting them he gave a detailed account of al that God had done among the gentiles throughhis ministry.	19 Dopo aver rivolto loro il saluto, si mise a raccontare nei particolari quello che Dio aveva fatto tra i pagani per mezzo del suo ministero.
20 They gave glory to God when they heard this. Then they said, 'You see, brother, how thousands ofJews have now become believers, al of them staunch upholders of the Law;	20 Come ebbero ascoltato, davano gloria a Dio; poi dissero a Paolo: «Tu vedi, fratello, quante migliaia di Giudei sono venuti alla fede e sono tutti osservanti della Legge.
21 and what they have heard about you is that you instruct al Jews living among the gentiles to breakaway from Moses, authorising them not to circumcise their children or to fol ow the customary practices.	21 Ora, hanno sentito dire di te che insegni a tutti i Giudei sparsi tra i pagani di abbandonare Mosè, dicendo di non circoncidere più i loro figli e di non seguire più le usanze tradizionali.
22 What is to be done? A crowd is sure to gather, for they wil hear that you have come.	22 Che facciamo? Senza dubbio verranno a sapere che sei arrivato.
23 So this is what we suggest that you should do; we have four men here who are under a vow;	23 Fa’ dunque quanto ti diciamo. Vi sono fra noi quattro uomini che hanno fatto un voto.
24 take these men along and be purified with them and pay al the expenses connected with the shavingof their heads. This wil let everyone know there is no truth in the reports they have heard about you, and thatyou too observe the Law by your way of life.	24 Prendili con te, compi la purificazione insieme a loro e paga tu per loro perché si facciano radere il capo. Così tutti verranno a sapere che non c’è nulla di vero in quello che hanno sentito dire, ma che invece anche tu ti comporti bene, osservando la Legge.
25 About the gentiles who have become believers, we have written giving them our decision that theymust abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from il icitmarriages.'	25 Quanto ai pagani che sono venuti alla fede, noi abbiamo deciso e abbiamo loro scritto che si tengano lontani dalle carni offerte agli idoli, dal sangue, da ogni animale soffocato e dalle unioni illegittime».
26 So the next day Paul took the men along and was purified with them, and he visited the Temple togive notice of the time when the period of purification would be over and the offering would have to be presentedon behalf of each of them.	26 Allora Paolo prese con sé quegli uomini e, il giorno seguente, fatta insieme a loro la purificazione, entrò nel tempio per comunicare il compimento dei giorni della purificazione, quando sarebbe stata presentata l’offerta per ciascuno di loro.
27 The seven days were nearly over when some Jews from Asia caught sight of him in the Temple andstirred up the crowd and seized him,	27 Stavano ormai per finire i sette giorni, quando i Giudei della provincia d’Asia, come lo videro nel tempio, aizzarono tutta la folla e misero le mani su di lui
28 shouting, 'Men of Israel, help! This is the man who preaches to everyone everywhere against ourpeople, against the Law and against this place. He has even profaned this Holy Place by bringing Greeks intothe Temple.'	28 gridando: «Uomini d’Israele, aiuto! Questo è l’uomo che va insegnando a tutti e dovunque contro il popolo, contro la Legge e contro questo luogo; ora ha perfino introdotto dei Greci nel tempio e ha profanato questo luogo santo!».
29 They had, in fact, previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him and thought that Paulhad brought him into the Temple.	29 Avevano infatti veduto poco prima Tròfimo di Èfeso in sua compagnia per la città, e pensavano che Paolo lo avesse fatto entrare nel tempio.
30 This roused the whole city; people came running from al sides; they seized Paul and dragged him outof the Temple, and the gates were closed behind them.	30 Allora tutta la città fu in subbuglio e il popolo accorse. Afferrarono Paolo, lo trascinarono fuori dal tempio e subito furono chiuse le porte.
31 While they were setting about killing him, word reached the tribune of the cohort that there was tumultal over Jerusalem.	31 Stavano già cercando di ucciderlo, quando fu riferito al comandante della coorte che tutta Gerusalemme era in agitazione.
32 He immediately called out soldiers and centurions and charged down on the crowd, who stoppedbeating Paul when they saw the tribune and the soldiers.	32 Immediatamente egli prese con sé dei soldati e dei centurioni e si precipitò verso di loro. Costoro, alla vista del comandante e dei soldati, cessarono di percuotere Paolo.
33 When the tribune came up he took Paul into custody, had him bound with two chains and enquiredwho he was and what he had done.	33 Allora il comandante si avvicinò, lo arrestò e ordinò che fosse legato con due catene; intanto si informava chi fosse e che cosa avesse fatto.
34 People in the crowd called out different things, and since the noise made it impossible for him to getany positive information, the tribune ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress.	34 Tra la folla però chi gridava una cosa, chi un’altra. Non riuscendo ad accertare la realtà dei fatti a causa della confusione, ordinò di condurlo nella fortezza.
35 When Paul reached the steps, the crowd became so violent that he had to be carried by the soldiers;	35 Quando fu alla gradinata, dovette essere portato a spalla dai soldati a causa della violenza della folla.
36 and indeed the whole mob was after them, shouting, 'Do away with him!'	36 La moltitudine del popolo infatti veniva dietro, urlando: «A morte!».
37 Just as Paul was being taken into the fortress, he asked the tribune if he could have a word with him.The tribune said, 'You speak Greek, then?	37 Sul punto di essere condotto nella fortezza, Paolo disse al comandante: «Posso dirti una parola?». Quello disse: «Conosci il greco?
38 Aren't you the Egyptian who started the recent revolt and led those four thousand cut-throats out intothe desert?'	38 Allora non sei tu quell’Egiziano che in questi ultimi tempi ha sobillato e condotto nel deserto i quattromila ribelli?».
39 'I?' said Paul, 'I am a Jew and a citizen of the wel -known city of Tarsus in Cilicia. Please give mepermission to speak to the people.'	39 Rispose Paolo: «Io sono un giudeo di Tarso in Cilìcia, cittadino di una città non senza importanza. Ti prego, permettimi di parlare al popolo».
40 The man gave his consent and Paul, standing at the top of the steps, raised his hand to the people forsilence. A profound silence fol owed, and he started speaking to them in Hebrew.	40 Egli acconsentì e Paolo, in piedi sui gradini, fece cenno con la mano al popolo; si fece un grande silenzio ed egli si rivolse loro ad alta voce in lingua ebraica, dicendo:
