Deuteronomy 9

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 'Listen, Israel; today you are about to cross the Jordan, to go and dispossess nations greater andstronger than yourself, and cities immense, with walls reaching to the sky.	1 Ascolta Israele: oggi tu stai per passare il Giordano per andare a conquistare nazioni più grandi e più forti di te, città grandi e fortificate fino al cielo;
2 A people great and tal , these Anakim, as you know; you have heard the saying: Who can stand up tothe sons of Anak?	2 un popolo potente e alto, i figli degli Anakiti che tu conosci e dei quali hai sentito dire: "Chi può resistere ai figli di Anak?".
3 Know then today that Yahweh your God himself wil go ahead of you, destroying them like a devouringfire, and that he himself wil subdue them before you so that you can dispossess and quickly make an end ofthem, as Yahweh has already said.	3 Oggi sappi che il Signore tuo Dio, è lui che passerà davanti a te come un fuoco divoratore: è lui che li sterminerà ed è lui che te li sottometterà; tu li conquisterai e li distruggerai rapidamente, come ti ha detto il Signore.
4 Do not think to yourself, once Yahweh your God has driven them before you, "Yahweh has brought meinto possession of this country because I am upright," when Yahweh is dispossessing these nations for you,because they do wrong.	4 Non dire nel tuo cuore, quando il Signore tuo Dio li caccerà dinanzi a te: "Per la mia giustizia il Signore mi ha condotto a conquistare questa terra". Ma per la perversità di quelle nazioni il Signore tuo Dio le spossessa davanti a te.
5 You are not going into their country to take possession because of any right behaviour or uprightnesson your part; rather, it is because of their wickedness that Yahweh is dispossessing these nations for you, andalso to keep the pact which he swore to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	5 Non per la tua giustizia né per la rettitudine del tuo cuore tu vai a conquistare la loro terra, ma per la perversità di quelle nazioni il Signore le spossessa davanti a te, per mantenere la parola che ha giurato ai tuoi padri, ad Abramo, ad Isacco e a Giacobbe.
6 Be clear about this: Yahweh is not giving you possession of this fine country because of any rightconduct on your part, for you are an obstinate people.	6 Sappi che non per la tua giustizia il Signore tuo Dio ti dona in possesso questa terra buona; perché sei un popolo di dura cervice.
7 'Remember; never forget how you provoked Yahweh your God in the desert. From the very day thatyou left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebels against Yahweh.	7 Ricorda e non dimenticare che hai irritato il Signore tuo Dio nel deserto; da quando siete usciti dalla terra d'Egitto fino al vostro arrivo in questo luogo siete stati ribelli verso il Signore.
8 At Horeb, you provoked Yahweh, and Yahweh was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you.	8 All'Oreb avete irritato il Signore ed egli si è così adirato contro di voi che voleva distruggervi,
9 I had gone up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that Yahweh wasmaking with you. I stayed forty days and forty nights on the mountain, with nothing to eat or drink.	9 quando io ero salito sul monte per prendere le tavole di pietra, tavole dell'alleanza che il Signore aveva stretto con voi ed ero restato sul monte quaranta giorni e quaranta notti senza mangiare pane e senza bere acqua;
10 Yahweh gave me the two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God, exactly corresponding to whatYahweh had said to you on the mountain, from the heart of the fire, on the day of the Assembly.	10 il Signore mi aveva dato le due tavole di pietra, scritte dal dito di Dio, sulle quali erano tutte le parole che il Signore vi aveva detto sul monte, in mezzo al fuoco, nel giorno dell'assemblea.
11 After forty days and forty nights, having given me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant,	11 Al termine dei quaranta giorni e delle quaranta notti il Signore mi diede le due tavole di pietra, le tavole dell'alleanza,
12 Yahweh said to me, "Get up, go down quickly, for your people, whom you have brought out of Egypt,are corrupting one another. They have been quick to leave the way I marked out for them; they have castthemselves a metal idol."	12 e mi disse il Signore: "Alzati, discendi in fretta di qui, perché il tuo popolo, che tu hai fatto uscire dall'Egitto, ha prevaricato. Hanno deviato presto dalla via che avevo loro prescritto e si sono fatti un idolo di metallo fuso".
13 Yahweh then said to me, "I have seen this people, and what an obstinate people they are!	13 Il Signore mi disse: "Io ho visto questo popolo; ecco, è un popolo di dura cervice.
14 Leave me, I am going to destroy them and wipe out their name under heaven; and I shal make youinto a mightier and more numerous nation than they are!"	14 Lasciami che li distrugga e cancelli il loro nome di sotto il cielo, e farò di te una nazione più forte e numerosa di quello".
15 'I went back down the mountain, which was blazing with fire, and in my hands were the two tablets ofthe covenant.	15 Mi voltai e scesi dal monte e il monte bruciava nel fuoco; le due tavole dell'alleanza erano nelle mie mani.
16 When I looked, I saw that you had been sinning against Yahweh your God. You had cast yourselves ametal calf; you had been quick to leave the way marked out for you by Yahweh.	16 Guardai, ed ecco, avevate peccato contro il Signore vostro Dio e vi eravate fatti un vitello di metallo fuso: avevate deviato presto dalla via che il Signore vi aveva prescritto.
17 I seized the two tablets and with my two hands threw them down and broke them before your eyes.	17 Afferrai le due tavole, le scagliai dalle mani, le spezzai sotto i vostri occhi
18 Then I fel prostrate before Yahweh; as before, I spent forty days and forty nights with nothing to eat ordrink, on account of al the sins which you had committed, by doing what was displeasing to Yahweh and thusarousing his anger.	18 e mi gettai al cospetto del Signore: come la prima volta, per quaranta giorni e quaranta notti non mangiai pane e non bevvi acqua, a causa di tutti i peccati che avevate commesso facendo il male agli occhi del Signore per irritarlo.
19 For I was afraid of this anger, of the fury which so roused Yahweh against you that he was ready todestroy you. And, once again, Yahweh heard my prayer.	19 Perché io ero atterrito davanti alla collera e all'indignazione di cui il Signore era adirato contro di voi, così da volervi distruggere. Il Signore mi ascoltò anche questa volta.
20 Yahweh was enraged with Aaron and was ready to destroy him too; I also pleaded for Aaron on thatoccasion.	20 Anche contro Aronne il Signore si era tanto irritato che lo voleva distruggere; e intercedetti anche per Aronne in quel tempo.
21 That work of sin, the calf you had made, I took and burned and broke to pieces; having ground it to thefinest dust, I threw its dust into the stream that comes down from the mountain.	21 L'oggetto del peccato che voi avevate commesso, cioè il vitello, lo presi e lo bruciai nel fuoco, lo spezzai, lo ridussi interamente in polvere minuta e ne gettai la polvere nel torrente che scende dal monte.
22 'At Taberah too and at Massah and Kibroth-ha-Taavah, you provoked Yahweh.	22 Anche a Tabera, a Massa e a Kibrot-Taava avete irritato il Signore;
23 And when Yahweh, meaning you to leave Kadesh-Barnea, said, "Go up and take possession of thecountry which I have given you," you rebel ed against the command of Yahweh your God and would not believehim or listen to his voice.	23 e quando egli vi ha mandato da Kades-Barnea dicendo: "Salite a conquistare la terra che vi ho dato", vi siete ribellati contro la parola del Signore vostro Dio, non gli avete creduto, né avete ascoltato la sua voce.
24 You have been rebels against Yahweh from the day he first knew you.	24 Voi foste ribelli al Signore dal giorno in cui vi ha conosciuto.
25 'So I fell prostrate before Yahweh and lay there those forty days and forty nights, Yahweh having saidthat he was going to destroy you.	25 Mi gettai dunque al cospetto del Signore quaranta giorni e quaranta notti; mi sono prostrato, perché il Signore parlò di distruggervi.
26 And I pleaded with Yahweh. "My Lord Yahweh," I said, "do not destroy your people, your heritagewhom in your greatness you have redeemed, whom you have brought out of Egypt with your mighty hand.	26 Intercedetti presso il Signore e dissi: "Signore Dio, non distruggere il tuo popolo, la tua eredità che hai redento con la tua grandezza, che hai fatto uscire dall'Egitto con mano potente.
27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; take no notice of this people's stubbornness,their wickedness, and their sin,	27 Ricorda i tuoi servi, Abramo, Isacco, Giacobbe, e non guardare l'ostinazione di questo popolo, la sua perversità e il suo peccato,
28 so that, in the country from which you have brought us, it may not be said, 'Yahweh was not able tobring them to the country which he had promised them. He hated them; that was why he brought them out -- toslaughter them in the desert.'	28 affinché non dicano nella terra donde ci hai fatto uscire: Il Signore non ha potuto introdurli nella terra che aveva loro detto e per odio contro di loro li ha fatti uscire per farli morire nel deserto.
29 But these are your people, your heritage, whom you yourself have brought out by your great powerand your outstretched arm." '	29 Essi sono il tuo popolo e la tua eredità, che tu hai fatto uscire con la tua grande forza e con il tuo braccio steso".
