Deuteronomy 9

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 'Listen, Israel; today you are about to cross the Jordan, to go and dispossess nations greater andstronger than yourself, and cities immense, with walls reaching to the sky.	1 Escucha, Israel. Hoy vas a pasar ya el Jordán para ir a desalojar a naciones más grandes y fuertes que tú, ciudades grandes, de murallas que llegan hasta el cielo,
2 A people great and tal , these Anakim, as you know; you have heard the saying: Who can stand up tothe sons of Anak?	2 un pueblo grande y corpulento, los anaquitas, a quienes tú conoces y de quienes has oído decir: «¿Quién puede hacer frente a los hijos de Anaq?»
3 Know then today that Yahweh your God himself wil go ahead of you, destroying them like a devouringfire, and that he himself wil subdue them before you so that you can dispossess and quickly make an end ofthem, as Yahweh has already said.	3 Pero has de saber hoy que Yahveh tu Dios es quien va a pasar delante de ti como un fuego devorador que los destruirá y te los someterá, para que los desalojes y los destruyas rápidamente, como te ha dicho Yahveh.
4 Do not think to yourself, once Yahweh your God has driven them before you, "Yahweh has brought meinto possession of this country because I am upright," when Yahweh is dispossessing these nations for you,because they do wrong.	4 No digas en tu corazón cuando Yahveh tu Dios los arroje de delante de ti: «Por mis méritos me ha hecho Yahveh entrar en posesión de esta tierra», siendo así que sólo por la perversidad de estas naciones las desaloja Yahveh ante ti.
5 You are not going into their country to take possession because of any right behaviour or uprightnesson your part; rather, it is because of their wickedness that Yahweh is dispossessing these nations for you, andalso to keep the pact which he swore to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	5 No por tus méritos ni por la rectitud de tu corazón vas a tomar posesión de su tierra, sino que sólo por la perversidad de estas naciones las desaloja Yahveh tu Dios ante ti; y también por cumplir la palabra que juró a tus padres, Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.
6 Be clear about this: Yahweh is not giving you possession of this fine country because of any rightconduct on your part, for you are an obstinate people.	6 Has de saber, pues, que no es por tu justicia por lo que Yahveh tu Dios te da en posesión esa tierra buena, ya que eres un pueblo de dura cerviz.
7 'Remember; never forget how you provoked Yahweh your God in the desert. From the very day thatyou left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebels against Yahweh.	7 Acuérdate. No olvides que irritaste a Yahveh tu Dios en el desierto. Desde el día en que saliste del país de Egipto hasta vuestra llegada a este lugar, habéis sido rebeldes a Yahveh.
8 At Horeb, you provoked Yahweh, and Yahweh was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you.	8 En el Horeb irritasteis a Yahveh, y Yahveh montó en tal cólera contra vosotros que estuvo a punto de destruiros.
9 I had gone up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that Yahweh wasmaking with you. I stayed forty days and forty nights on the mountain, with nothing to eat or drink.	9 Yo había subido al monte a recoger las tablas de piedra, las tablas de la alianza que Yahveh había concluido con vosotros. Permanecí en el monte cuarenta días y cuarenta noches sin comer pan ni beber agua.
10 Yahweh gave me the two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God, exactly corresponding to whatYahweh had said to you on the mountain, from the heart of the fire, on the day of the Assembly.	10 Yahveh me dio las dos tablas de piedra escritas por el dedo de Dios, en las que estaban todas las palabras que Yahveh os había dicho de en medio del fuego, en la montaña, el día de la Asamblea.
11 After forty days and forty nights, having given me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant,	11 Al cabo de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, después de darme las dos tablas de piedra, las tablas de la alianza,
12 Yahweh said to me, "Get up, go down quickly, for your people, whom you have brought out of Egypt,are corrupting one another. They have been quick to leave the way I marked out for them; they have castthemselves a metal idol."	12 me dijo Yahveh: «Levántate, baja de aquí a toda prisa, porque tu pueblo, el que tú sacaste de Egipto, se ha pervertido. Bien pronto se han apartado del camino que yo les había prescrito: se han hecho un ídolo de fundición».
13 Yahweh then said to me, "I have seen this people, and what an obstinate people they are!	13 Continuó Yahveh y me dijo: «He visto a este pueblo: es un pueblo de dura cerviz.
14 Leave me, I am going to destroy them and wipe out their name under heaven; and I shal make youinto a mightier and more numerous nation than they are!"	14 Déjame que los destruya y borre su nombre de debajo del cielo; y que haga de ti una nación más fuerte y numerosa que ésta».
15 'I went back down the mountain, which was blazing with fire, and in my hands were the two tablets ofthe covenant.	15 Yo me volví y bajé del monte, que ardía en llamas, llevando en mis manos las dos tablas de la alianza.
16 When I looked, I saw that you had been sinning against Yahweh your God. You had cast yourselves ametal calf; you had been quick to leave the way marked out for you by Yahweh.	16 Y vi que vosotros habíais pecado contre Yahveh vuestro Dios. Os habíais hecho un becerro de fundición: bien pronto os habíais apartado del camino que Yahveh os tenía prescrito.
17 I seized the two tablets and with my two hands threw them down and broke them before your eyes.	17 Tomé entonces las dos tablas, las arrojé de mis manos y las hice pedazos a vuestros propios ojos.
18 Then I fel prostrate before Yahweh; as before, I spent forty days and forty nights with nothing to eat ordrink, on account of al the sins which you had committed, by doing what was displeasing to Yahweh and thusarousing his anger.	18 Luego me postré ante Yahveh; como la otra vez, estuve cuarenta días y cuarenta noches sin comer pan ni beber agua, por todo el pecado que habíais cometido haciendo el mal a los ojos de Yahveh hasta irritarle.
19 For I was afraid of this anger, of the fury which so roused Yahweh against you that he was ready todestroy you. And, once again, Yahweh heard my prayer.	19 Porque tenía mucho miedo de la ira y del furor que irritaba a Yahveh contra vosotros hasta querer destruiros. Y una vez más me escuchó Yahveh.
20 Yahweh was enraged with Aaron and was ready to destroy him too; I also pleaded for Aaron on thatoccasion.	20 También contra Aarón estaba Yahveh violentamente irritado hasta querer destruirle. Yo intercedí también entonces en favor de Aarón.
21 That work of sin, the calf you had made, I took and burned and broke to pieces; having ground it to thefinest dust, I threw its dust into the stream that comes down from the mountain.	21 Y vuestro pecado, el becerro que os habíais hecho, lo tomé y lo quemé; lo hice pedazos, lo pasé a la muela hasta que quedó reducido a polvo, y tiré el polvo al torrente que baja de la montaña.
22 'At Taberah too and at Massah and Kibroth-ha-Taavah, you provoked Yahweh.	22 Y en Taberá, y en Massá, y en Quibrot Hattaavá, irritasteis a Yahveh.
23 And when Yahweh, meaning you to leave Kadesh-Barnea, said, "Go up and take possession of thecountry which I have given you," you rebel ed against the command of Yahweh your God and would not believehim or listen to his voice.	23 Y cuando Yahveh os hizo salir de Cadés Barnea diciendo: «Subid a tomar posesión de la tierra que yo os he dado», os rebelasteis contra la orden de Yahveh vuestro Dios, no creísteis en él ni eschuchasteis su voz.
24 You have been rebels against Yahweh from the day he first knew you.	24 Habéis sido rebeldes a Yahveh vuestro Dios desde el día en que os conoció.
25 'So I fell prostrate before Yahweh and lay there those forty days and forty nights, Yahweh having saidthat he was going to destroy you.	25 Me postré, pues, ante Yahveh y estuve postrado estos cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, porque Yahveh había hablado de destruiros.
26 And I pleaded with Yahweh. "My Lord Yahweh," I said, "do not destroy your people, your heritagewhom in your greatness you have redeemed, whom you have brought out of Egypt with your mighty hand.	26 Supliqué a Yahveh y dije: «Señor Yahveh, no destruyas a tu pueblo, tu heredad, que tú rescataste con tu grandeza y que sacaste de Egipto con mano fuerte.
27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; take no notice of this people's stubbornness,their wickedness, and their sin,	27 Acuérdate de tus siervos Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, y no tomes en cuenta la indocilidad de este pueblo, ni su maldad ni su pecado,
28 so that, in the country from which you have brought us, it may not be said, 'Yahweh was not able tobring them to the country which he had promised them. He hated them; that was why he brought them out -- toslaughter them in the desert.'	28 para que no se diga en el país de donde nos sacaste: “Porque Yahveh no ha podido llevarlos a la tierra que les había prometido, y por el odio que les tiene, los ha sacado para hacerlos morir en el desierto.”
29 But these are your people, your heritage, whom you yourself have brought out by your great powerand your outstretched arm." '	29 Pero ellos son tu pueblo, tu heredad, aquellos a quienes tú sacaste con tu gran fuerza y tu tenso brazo».
