When he had come to the end of al he wanted the people to hear, he went into Capernaum.1 And when he had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
A centurion there had a servant, a favourite of his, who was sick and near death.2 Now the servant of a certain centurion was dying, due to an illness. And he was very dear to him.
Having heard about Jesus he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and heal his servant.3 And when he had heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, petitioning him, so that he would come and heal his servant.
When they came to Jesus they pleaded earnestly with him saying, 'He deserves this of you,4 And when they had come to Jesus, they petitioned him anxiously, saying to him: “He is worthy that you should provide this to him.
because he is wel disposed towards our people; he built us our synagogue himself.'5 For he loves our nation, and he has built a synagogue for us.”
So Jesus went with them, and was not very far from the house when the centurion sent word to him bysome friends to say to him, 'Sir, do not put yourself to any trouble because I am not worthy to have you under myroof;6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying: “Lord, do not trouble yourself. For I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.
and that is why I did not presume to come to you myself; let my boy be cured by your giving the word.7 Because of this, I also did not consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, "Go," and he goes;to another, "Come here," and he comes; to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard these words he was astonished at him and, turning round, said to the crowdfol owing him, 'I tel you, not even in Israel have I found faith as great as this.'9 And upon hearing this, Jesus was amazed. And turning to the multitude following him, he said, “Amen I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
And when the messengers got back to the house they found the servant in perfect health.10 And those who had been sent, upon returning to the house, found that the servant, who had been sick, was now healthy.
It happened that soon afterwards he went to a town cal ed Nain, accompanied by his disciples and agreat number of people.11 And it happened afterwards that he went to a city, which is called Nain. And his disciples, and an abundant crowd, went with him.
Now when he was near the gate of the town there was a dead man being carried out, the only son ofhis mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople was with her.12 Then, when he had drawn near to the gate of the city, behold, a deceased person was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.
When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her and said to her, 'Don't cry.'13 And when the Lord had seen her, being moved by mercy over her, he said to her, “Do not weep.”
Then he went up and touched the bier and the bearers stood stil , and he said, 'Young man, I tel you:get up.'14 And he drew near and touched the coffin. Then those who carried it stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.15 And the dead youth sat up and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.
Everyone was fil ed with awe and glorified God saying, 'A great prophet has risen up among us; Godhas visited his people.'16 Then fear fell over all of them. And they magnified God, saying: “For a great prophet has risen up among us,” and, “For God has visited his people.”
And this view of him spread throughout Judaea and al over the countryside.17 And this word about him went out to all of Judea and to the entire surrounding region.
The disciples of John gave him al this news, and John, summoning two of his disciples,18 And the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.
sent them to the Lord to ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'19 And John called two of his disciples, and he sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are you he who is to come, or should we wait for another?”
When the men reached Jesus they said, 'John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, "Are you the onewho is to come or are we to expect someone else?" '20 But when the men had come to him, they said: “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying: ‘Are you he who is to come, or should we wait for another?’ ”
At that very time he cured many people of diseases and afflictions and of evil spirits, and gave the giftof sight to many who were blind.21 Now in that same hour, he cured many of their diseases and wounds and evil spirits; and to many of the blind, he gave sight.
Then he gave the messengers their answer, 'Go back and tel John what you have seen and heard:the blind see again, the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, the good news is proclaimed to the poor;22 And responding, he said to them: “Go and report to John what you have heard and seen: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor are evangelized.
and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of fal ing.'23 And blessed is anyone who has not taken offense at me.”
When John's messengers had gone he began to talk to the people about John,24 And when the messengers of John had withdrawn, he began to speak about John to the crowds. “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
'What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No! Then what did you goout to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who go in magnificent clothes and live luxuriously are tobe found at royal courts!25 Then what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who are in costly apparel and finery are in the houses of kings.
Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet:26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Certainly, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you toprepare your way before you.27 This is he of whom it is written: “Behold, I send my Angel before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.”
'I tel you, of al the children born to women, there is no one greater than John; yet the least in thekingdom of God is greater than he.'28 For I say to you, among those born of women, no one is greater than the prophet John the Baptist. But he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
Al the people who heard him, and the tax col ectors too, acknowledged God's saving justice byaccepting baptism from John;29 And upon hearing this, all the people and the tax collectors justified God, by being baptized with the baptism of John.
but by refusing baptism from him the Pharisees and the lawyers thwarted God's plan for them.30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law despised the counsel of God concerning themselves, by not being baptized by him.
'What comparison, then, can I find for the people of this generation? What are they like?31 Then the Lord said: “Therefore, to what shall I compare the men of this generation? And to what are they similar?
They are like children shouting to one another while they sit in the market place: We played the pipesfor you, and you wouldn't dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn't cry.32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace, talking with one another, and saying: ‘We sang to you, and you did not dance. We lamented, and you did not weep.’
'For John the Baptist has come, not eating bread, not drinking wine, and you say, "He is possessed."33 For John the Baptist came, neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
The Son of man has come, eating and drinking, and you say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friendof tax col ectors and sinners."34 The Son of man came, eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a voracious man and a drinker of wine, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners.’
Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.'35 But wisdom is justified by all her children.”
One of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. When he arrived at the Pharisee's house and took hisplace at table,36 Then certain Pharisees petitioned him, so that they might eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, and he reclined at table.
suddenly a woman came in, who had a bad name in the town. She had heard he was dining with thePharisee and had brought with her an alabaster jar of ointment.37 And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner, found out that he was reclining at table in the house of the Pharisee, so she brought an alabaster container of ointment.
She waited behind him at his feet, weeping, and her tears fel on his feet, and she wiped them awaywith her hair; then she covered his feet with kisses and anointed them with the ointment.38 And standing behind him, beside his feet, she began to wash his feet with tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and she kissed his feet, and she anointed them with ointment.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, 'If this man were a prophet, hewould know who this woman is and what sort of person it is who is touching him and what a bad name she has.'39 Then the Pharisee, who had invited him, upon seeing this, spoke within himself, saying, “This man, if he were a prophet, would certainly know who and what kind of woman is this, who is touching him: that she is a sinner.”
Then Jesus took him up and said, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' He replied, 'Say on,Master.'40 And in response, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Speak, Teacher.”
'There was once a creditor who had two men in his debt; one owed him five hundred denari , the otherfifty.41 “A certain creditor had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
They were unable to pay, so he let them both off. Which of them wil love him more?'42 And since they did not have the ability to repay him, he forgave them both. So then, which of them loves him more?”
Simon answered, 'The one who was let off more, I suppose.' Jesus said, 'You are right.'43 In response, Simon said, “I suppose that it is he to whom he forgave the most.” And he said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'You see this woman? I came into your house, andyou poured no water over my feet, but she has poured out her tears over my feet and wiped them away with herhair.44 And turning to the woman, he said to Simon: “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house. You gave me no water for my feet. But she has washed my feet with tears, and has wiped them with her hair.
You gave me no kiss, but she has been covering my feet with kisses ever since I came in.45 You gave no kiss to me. But she, from the time that she entered, has not ceased to kiss my feet.
You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.46 You did not anoint my head with oil. But she has anointed my feet with ointment.
For this reason I tel you that her sins, many as they are, have been forgiven her, because she hasshown such great love. It is someone who is forgiven little who shows little love.'47 Because of this, I tell you: many sins are forgiven her, because she has loved much. But he who is forgiven less, loves less.”
Then he said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven.'48 Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven you.”
Those who were with him at table began to say to themselves, 'Who is this man, that even forgivessins?'49 And those who sat at table with him began to say within themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”
But he said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace.'50 Then he said to the woman: “Your faith has brought you salvation. Go in peace.”
