1 When he had come to the end of al he wanted the people to hear, he went into Capernaum.	1 E terminato che ebbe tutti i suoi discorsi al popolo, che lo ascoltava; entrò in Cafarnaum.
2 A centurion there had a servant, a favourite of his, who was sick and near death.	2 E il servo di un certo centurione caro a lui era ammalato, e vicino a morire.
3 Having heard about Jesus he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and heal his servant.	3 E avendo quegli sentito parlare di Gesù, mandò da lui gli anziani dei giudei a pregarlo, che andasse a guarire il suo servo.
4 When they came to Jesus they pleaded earnestly with him saying, 'He deserves this of you,	4 Questi adunque' essendo andati a trovar Gesù, lo pregavano istantemente, dicendogli: Egli merita, che tu gli faccia questa grazia.
5 because he is wel disposed towards our people; he built us our synagogue himself.'	5 Imperocché ama la nostra nazione, e ci ha fabbricata egli stesso la sinagoga.
6 So Jesus went with them, and was not very far from the house when the centurion sent word to him bysome friends to say to him, 'Sir, do not put yourself to any trouble because I am not worthy to have you under myroof;	6 Gesù adunque andò con loro. E quando era già poco lontan dalla casa, il centurione mandò a lui degli amici, per dirgli: Signore, non ti incomodare: imperocché non sono io degno, che tu entri sotto il mio tetto:
7 and that is why I did not presume to come to you myself; let my boy be cured by your giving the word.	7 E per questo non mi sono nemmen io medesimo creduto degno di venir da te: ma ordina con un sol motto, e il mio servo sarà risanato.
8 For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, "Go," and he goes;to another, "Come here," and he comes; to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'	8 Imperocché anch'io sono un uomo subordinato, che ho sotto di me de' soldati: e dico a uno: Vanne, ed egli va; ed a un altro: Vieni, ed egli viene; e al mio servo: Fa la tal cosa, e la fa.
9 When Jesus heard these words he was astonished at him and, turning round, said to the crowdfol owing him, 'I tel you, not even in Israel have I found faith as great as this.'	9 Lo che udito avendo Gesù, ne restò ammirato: e rivolto alla turba, che lo seguiva, disse: In verità vi dico, che non ho trovato tanta fede nemmeno in Israele.
10 And when the messengers got back to the house they found the servant in perfect health.	10 E coloro, che erano stati mandati, ritornando a casa, trovarono guarito il servo, che era stato malato.
11 It happened that soon afterwards he went to a town cal ed Nain, accompanied by his disciples and agreat number of people.	11 E avvenne, che di poi egli andava a una città chiamata Naim: e andavan seco i suoi discepoli, e una gran turba di popolo.
12 Now when he was near the gate of the town there was a dead man being carried out, the only son ofhis mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople was with her.	12 E quand' ei fu vicino alla porta della città, ecco che veniva portato fuori alla sepoltura un figliuolo unico di sua madre: e questa era vedova: e gran numero di persone della citta la accompagnavano.
13 When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her and said to her, 'Don't cry.'	13 E vedutala il Signore, mosso di lei a compassione, le disse: Non piangere.
14 Then he went up and touched the bier and the bearers stood stil , and he said, 'Young man, I tel you:get up.'	14 E avvicinossi alla bara, e la toccò. (E quelli, che la portavano, si fermarono) Ed egli disse: Giovinetto, dico a te, levati su.
15 And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.	15 E il morto si alzò a sedere, e principiò a parlare. Ed egli lo rendette a sua madre.
16 Everyone was fil ed with awe and glorified God saying, 'A great prophet has risen up among us; Godhas visited his people.'	16 Ed entrò in tutti un gran timore: e glorificavano Dio, dicendo: Un profeta grande è apparso tra noi: e ha Dio visitato il suo popolo.
17 And this view of him spread throughout Judaea and al over the countryside.	17 E questa opinione intorno ad esso si sparse per tutta la Giudea, e pertutto il paese all'intorno.
18 The disciples of John gave him al this news, and John, summoning two of his disciples,	18 E i discepoli di Giovanni riferirono a lui tutte queste cose.
19 sent them to the Lord to ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'	19 E Giovanni chiamati due de' suoi discepoli, li mandò da Gesù a dirgli: Se' tu colui, che dee venire, o dobbiamo aspettar un altro?
20 When the men reached Jesus they said, 'John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, "Are you the onewho is to come or are we to expect someone else?" '	20 E quegli andati da lui gli dissero: Giovanni Batista ci ha mandati da te a dirti: Se' tu colui, che dee venire, o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?
21 At that very time he cured many people of diseases and afflictions and of evil spirits, and gave the giftof sight to many who were blind.	21 (Or nello stesso tempo egli liberò molti dalle malattie, e dalle piaghe, e da' maligni spiriti, e donò il vedere a molti ciechi).
22 Then he gave the messengers their answer, 'Go back and tel John what you have seen and heard:the blind see again, the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, and the deaf hear,the dead are raised to life, the good news is proclaimed to the poor;	22 E rispose loro: Andate, riferite a Giovanni quel, che avete udito, e veduto: i ciechi veggono, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono mondati, i sordi odono, i morti risuscitano, e si annuncia a' poveri il Vangelo:
23 and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of fal ing.'	23 E beato, chi non sarà scandalizzato per me.
24 When John's messengers had gone he began to talk to the people about John,	24 E partiti che furono i messi di Giovanni, cominciò egli a dire di Giovanni alle turbe: Che siete voi andati a vedere nel deserto? forse una canna scossa dal vento?
25 'What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No! Then what did you goout to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who go in magnificent clothes and live luxuriously are tobe found at royal courts!	25 Ma pure, che siete voi andati a vedere? forse un uomo delicatamente vestito? Certo, che coloro, che portano abiti preziosi, e stanno sul lusso, vivono nelle case dei re.
26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet:	26 Ma che è quello, che siete andati a vedere? un profeta? Si certamente, io vi dico, e ancor più che profeta:
27 he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you toprepare your way before you.	27 Questi è colui, del quale sta scritto: Ecco che io spedisco il mio Angelo innanzi a te, il quale preparerà al tuo venire la strada.
28 'I tel you, of al the children born to women, there is no one greater than John; yet the least in thekingdom of God is greater than he.'	28 Imperocché io vi dico, che tra i nati di donna, profeta maggiore di Giovanni il Batista non v' è. Ma il più piccolo nel regno di Dio è maggiore di lui.
29 Al the people who heard him, and the tax col ectors too, acknowledged God's saving justice byaccepting baptism from John;	29 E tutto il popolo che lo ascoltò, e i pubblicani han dato gloria a Dio, essendosi battezzati col battesimo di Giovanni.
30 but by refusing baptism from him the Pharisees and the lawyers thwarted God's plan for them.	30 Ma i Farisei e i dottori della legge per loro danno disprezzarono i disegni di Dio, non essendosi fatti da lui battezzare.
31 'What comparison, then, can I find for the people of this generation? What are they like?	31 Disse poi il Signore: A qual cosa adunque paragonerò io gli uomini di questa generazione? E a qual cosa sono simili?
32 They are like children shouting to one another while they sit in the market place: We played the pipesfor you, and you wouldn't dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn't cry.	32 Sono simili a quei fanciulli, che seggono sulla piazza, e intuonano gli uni agli altri: Vi abbiamo sanato la sampogna, e non avete ballato: vi abbiamo cantato cose lugubri, e non avete pianto.
33 'For John the Baptist has come, not eating bread, not drinking wine, and you say, "He is possessed."	33 Conciossiachè venne Giovanni Batista, che non mangia pane, né beve vino, e voi dite: Egli è indemoniato.
34 The Son of man has come, eating and drinking, and you say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friendof tax col ectors and sinners."	34 Venne il Figliuolo dell'uomo, che mangia, e beve, e voi dite: Ecco il mangione, e il bevone, amico de' pubblicani, e de' peccatori.
35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.'	35 Ma è stata giustificata la sapienza da tutti i suoi figliuoli.
36 One of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. When he arrived at the Pharisee's house and took hisplace at table,	36 E uno de' Farisei lo pregò, che andasse a mangiar da lui. Ed entrato in casa del Fariseo si pose a tavola.
37 suddenly a woman came in, who had a bad name in the town. She had heard he was dining with thePharisee and had brought with her an alabaster jar of ointment.	37 Quand'ecco una donna, che era peccatrice in quella città, appena ebbe inteso, com' egli era a tavola in casa del Fariseo, prese un alabastro di unguento:
38 She waited behind him at his feet, weeping, and her tears fel on his feet, and she wiped them awaywith her hair; then she covered his feet with kisses and anointed them with the ointment.	38 E stando di dietro a' suoi piedi, cominciò a bagnare i piedi di lui colle lagrime, e rasciugavali con i capelli della sua testa, e li baciava, e gli ungeva con l'unguento.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, 'If this man were a prophet, hewould know who this woman is and what sort of person it is who is touching him and what a bad name she has.'	39 Or vedendo ciò il Fariseo, che lo aveva invitato, disse dentro di se: Se costui fosse profeta, certamente saprebbe, chi, e quale sia la donna, la quale lo tocca: e come ella è peccatrice.
40 Then Jesus took him up and said, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' He replied, 'Say on,Master.'	40 E Gesù gli rispose, e disse: Simone, ho qualche cosa da dirti. Ed egli disse: Maestro, parla.
41 'There was once a creditor who had two men in his debt; one owed him five hundred denari , the otherfifty.	41 Un creditore aveva due debitori: uno doveagli cinquecento denari, e l'altro cinquanta.
42 They were unable to pay, so he let them both off. Which of them wil love him more?'	42 Non avendo quegli il modo di pagare, condonò il debito ad ambedue. Chi adunque di essi lo ama di più?
43 Simon answered, 'The one who was let off more, I suppose.' Jesus said, 'You are right.'	43 Rispose Simone: Penso, che quegli, cui ha condonato di più. Ed ei disselli: Rettamente hai giudicato.
44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'You see this woman? I came into your house, andyou poured no water over my feet, but she has poured out her tears over my feet and wiped them away with herhair.	44 E rivolto alla donna, disse a Simone: vedi tu questa donna? Sono entrato in tua casa, non hai dato acqua a' miei piedi: e questa ha bagnato i miei piedi colle sue lagrime, e gli ha asciugati co' suoi capelli.
45 You gave me no kiss, but she has been covering my feet with kisses ever since I came in.	45 Non hai a me dato il bacio: questa da che è venuta, non ha rifinito di baciare i miei piedi.
46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.	46 Non hai unto con olio il mio capo: e questa ha unti con unguento i miei piedi.
47 For this reason I tel you that her sins, many as they are, have been forgiven her, because she hasshown such great love. It is someone who is forgiven little who shows little love.'	47 Per la qual cosa ti dico: Le sono rimessi molti peccati, perché molto ha amato. Or meno ama, a cui meno si perdona.
48 Then he said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven.'	48 E a lei disse: Ti son rimessi i peccati.
49 Those who were with him at table began to say to themselves, 'Who is this man, that even forgivessins?'	49 E i convitati cominciarono a dire dentro di se: Chi è costui, che fin rimette i peccati?
50 But he said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace.'	50 Ed egli disse alla donna: La tua fede ti ha fatta salva: Vanne in pace.
