Matthew 17

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a highmountain by themselves.	1 Seis días después, Jesús tomó a Pedro, a Santiago y a su hermano Juan, y los llevó aparte a un monte elevado.
2 There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became asdazzling as light.	2 Allí se transfiguró en presencia de ellos: su rostro resplandecía como el sol y sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como la luz.
3 And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him.	3 De pronto se les aparecieron Moisés y Elías, hablando con Jesús.
4 Then Peter spoke to Jesus. 'Lord,' he said, 'it is wonderful for us to be here; if you want me to, I willmake three shelters here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.'	4 Pedro dijo a Jesús: «Señor, ¡qué bien estamos aquí! Si quieres, levantará aquí mismo tres carpas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías».
5 He was stil speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and suddenly from thecloud there came a voice which said, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.'	5 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando una nube luminosa los cubrió con su sombra y se oyó una voz que decía desde la nube: «Este es mi Hijo muy querido, en quien tengo puesta mi predilección: escúchenlo».
6 When they heard this, the disciples fel on their faces, overcome with fear.	6 Al oír esto, los discípulos cayeron con el rostro en tierra, llenos de temor.
7 But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, 'Stand up, do not be afraid.'	7 Jesús se acercó a ellos, y tocándolos, les dijo: «Levántense, no tengan miedo».
8 And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus.	8 Cuando alzaron los ojos, no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús solo.
9 As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, 'Tel no one about this vision untilthe Son of man has risen from the dead.'	9 Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó: «No hablen a nadie de esta visión, hasta que el Hijo del hombre resucite de entre los muertos».
10 And the disciples put this question to him, 'Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'	10 Entonces los discípulos le preguntaron: «¿Por qué dicen los escribas que primero debe venir Elías?».
11 He replied, 'Elijah is indeed coming, and he wil set everything right again;	11 El respondió: «Sí, Elías debe venir a poner en orden todas las cosas;
12 however, I tel you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him but treated him asthey pleased; and the Son of man wil suffer similarly at their hands.'	12 pero les aseguro que Elías ya ha venido, y no lo han reconocido, sino que hicieron con él lo que quisieron. Y también harán padecer al Hijo del hombre».
13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking of John the Baptist.	13 Los discípulos comprendieron entonces que Jesús se refería a Juan el Bautista.
14 As they were rejoining the crowd a man came up to him and went down on his knees before him.	14 Cuando se reunieron con la multitud se le acercó un hombre y, cayendo de rodillas,
15 'Lord,' he said, 'take pity on my son: he is demented and in a wretched state; he is always fal ing intofire and into water.	15 le dijo: «Señor, ten piedad de mí hijo, que es epiléptico y está muy mal: frecuentemente cae en el fuego y también en el agua.
16 I took him to your disciples and they were unable to cure him.'	16 Yo lo llevé a tus discípulos, pero no lo pudieron curar».
17 In reply, Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you? Howmuch longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.'	17 Jesús respondió: «¡Generación incrédula y perversa! ¿Hasta cuándo estaré con ustedes? ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que soportarlos? Tráiganmelo aquí».
18 And when Jesus rebuked it the devil came out of the boy, who was cured from that moment.	18 Jesús increpó al demonio, y este salió del niño, que desde aquel momento, quedó curado.
19 Then the disciples came privately to Jesus. 'Why were we unable to drive it out?' they asked.	19 Los discípulos se acercaron entonces a Jesús y le preguntaron en privado: «¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsarlo?».
20 He answered, 'Because you have so little faith. In truth I tel you, if your faith is the size of a mustardseed you wil say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it wil move; nothing will be impossible foryou.'	20 «Porque ustedes tienen poca fe, les dijo. Les aseguro que si tuvieran fe del tamaño de un grano de mostaza, dirían a esta montaña: «Trasládate de aquí a allá», y la montaña se trasladaría; y nada sería imposible para ustedes».
21	21 [«En cuanto a esta clase de demonios, no se los puede expulsar sino por medio de la oración y del ayuno»].
22 When they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of man is going to be delivered intothe power of men;	22 Mientras estaban reunidos en Galilea, Jesús les dijo: «El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres:
23 they will put him to death, and on the third day he wil be raised up again.' And a great sadness cameover them.	23 lo matarán y al tercer día resucitará». Y ellos quedaron muy apenados.
24 When they reached Capernaum, the col ectors of the half-shekel came to Peter and said, 'Does yourmaster not pay the half-shekel?'	24 Al llegar a Cafarnaúm, los cobradores del impuesto del Templo se acercaron a Pedro y le preguntaron: «¿El Maestro de ustedes no paga el impuesto?».
25 'Yes,' he replied, and went into the house. But before he could speak, Jesus said, 'Simon, what isyour opinion? From whom do earthly kings take tol or tribute? From their sons or from foreigners?'	25 «Sí, lo paga», respondió. Cuando Pedro llegó a la casa, Jesús se adelantó a preguntarle: «¿Qué te parece, Simón? ¿De quiénes perciben los impuestos y las tasas los reyes de la tierra, de sus hijos o de los extraños?».
26 And when he replied, 'From foreigners,' Jesus said, 'Well then, the sons are exempt.	26 Y como Pedro respondió: «De los extraños», Jesús le dijo: «Eso quiere decir que los hijos están exentos.
27 However, so that we shal not be the downfal of others, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the firstfish that rises, open its mouth and there you wil find a shekel; take it and give it to them for me and for yourself.'	27 Sin embargo, para no escandalizar a esta gente, ve al lago, echa el anzuelo, toma el primer pez que salga y ábrele la boca. Encontrarás en ella una moneda de plata: tómala, y paga por mí y por ti».
