Matthew 17

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a highmountain by themselves.	1 Seis días después, toma Jesús consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a su hermano Juan, y los lleva aparte, a un monte alto.
2 There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became asdazzling as light.	2 Y se transfiguró delante de ellos: su rostro se puso brillante como el sol y sus vestidos se volvieron blancos como la luz.
3 And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him.	3 En esto, se les aparecieron Moisés y Elías que conversaban con él.
4 Then Peter spoke to Jesus. 'Lord,' he said, 'it is wonderful for us to be here; if you want me to, I willmake three shelters here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.'	4 Tomando Pedro la palabra, dijo a Jesús: «Señor, bueno es estarnos aquí. Si quieres, haré aquí tres tiendas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías».
5 He was stil speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and suddenly from thecloud there came a voice which said, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.'	5 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando una nube luminosa los cubrió con su sombra y de la nube salía una voz que decía: «Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco; escuchadle».
6 When they heard this, the disciples fel on their faces, overcome with fear.	6 Al oír esto los discípulos cayeron rostro en tierra llenos de miedo.
7 But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, 'Stand up, do not be afraid.'	7 Mas Jesús, acercándose a ellos, los tocó y dijo: «Levantaos, no tengáis miedo».
8 And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus.	8 Ellos alzaron sus ojos y ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús solo.
9 As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, 'Tel no one about this vision untilthe Son of man has risen from the dead.'	9 Y cuando bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó: «No contéis a nadie la visión hasta que el Hijo del hombre haya resucitado de entre los muertos».
10 And the disciples put this question to him, 'Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'	10 Sus discípulos le preguntaron: «¿Por qué, pues, dicen los escribas que Elías debe venir primero?»
11 He replied, 'Elijah is indeed coming, and he wil set everything right again;	11 Respondió él: «Ciertamente, Elías ha de venir a restaurarlo todo.
12 however, I tel you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him but treated him asthey pleased; and the Son of man wil suffer similarly at their hands.'	12 Os digo, sin embargo: Elías vino ya, pero no le reconocieron sino que hicieron con él cuanto quisieron. Así también el Hijo del hombre tendrá que padecer de parte de ellos».
13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking of John the Baptist.	13 Entonces los discípulos comprendieron que se refería a Juan el Bautista.
14 As they were rejoining the crowd a man came up to him and went down on his knees before him.	14 Cuando llegaron donde la gente, se acercó a él un hombre que, arrodillándose ante él,
15 'Lord,' he said, 'take pity on my son: he is demented and in a wretched state; he is always fal ing intofire and into water.	15 le dijo: «Señor, ten piedad de mi hijo, porque es lunático y está mal; pues muchas veces cae en el fuego y muchas en el agua.
16 I took him to your disciples and they were unable to cure him.'	16 Se lo he presentado a tus discípulos, pero ellos no han podido curarle».
17 In reply, Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you? Howmuch longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.'	17 Jesús respondió: «¡Oh generación incrédula y perversa! ¿Hasta cuándo estaré con vosotros? ¿Hasta cuándo habré de soportaros? ¡Traédmelo acá!
18 And when Jesus rebuked it the devil came out of the boy, who was cured from that moment.	18 Jesús le increpó y el demonio salió de él; y quedó sano el niño desde aquel momento.
19 Then the disciples came privately to Jesus. 'Why were we unable to drive it out?' they asked.	19 Entonces los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús, en privado, y le dijeron: «¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsarle?
20 He answered, 'Because you have so little faith. In truth I tel you, if your faith is the size of a mustardseed you wil say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it wil move; nothing will be impossible foryou.'	20 Díceles: «Por vuestra poca fe. Porque yo os aseguro: si tenéis fe como un grano de mostaza, diréis a este monte: “Desplázate de aquí allá”, y se desplazará, y nada os será imposible».

22 When they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of man is going to be delivered intothe power of men;	22 Yendo un día juntos por Galilea, les dijo Jesús: «El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres;
23 they will put him to death, and on the third day he wil be raised up again.' And a great sadness cameover them.	23 le matarán, y al tercer día resucitará». Y se entristecieron mucho.
24 When they reached Capernaum, the col ectors of the half-shekel came to Peter and said, 'Does yourmaster not pay the half-shekel?'	24 Cuando entraron en Cafarnaúm, se acercaron a Pedro los que cobraban el didracma y le dijeron: «¿No paga vuestro Maestro el didracma?»
25 'Yes,' he replied, and went into the house. But before he could speak, Jesus said, 'Simon, what isyour opinion? From whom do earthly kings take tol or tribute? From their sons or from foreigners?'	25 Dice él: «Sí». Y cuando llegó a casa, se anticipó Jesús a decirle: «¿Qué te parece, Simón?; los reyes de la tierra, ¿de quién cobran tasas o tributo, de sus hijos o de los extraños?»
26 And when he replied, 'From foreigners,' Jesus said, 'Well then, the sons are exempt.	26 Al contestar él: «De los extraños», Jesús le dijo: «Por tanto, libres están los hijos.
27 However, so that we shal not be the downfal of others, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the firstfish that rises, open its mouth and there you wil find a shekel; take it and give it to them for me and for yourself.'	27 Sin embargo, para que no les sirvamos de escándalo, vete al mar, echa el anzuelo, y el primer pez que salga, cógelo, ábrele la boca y encontrarás un estáter. Tómalo y dáselo por mí y por ti».
