NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
The whole community then cried out in dismay, and the people wept al that night.1 Igitur vociferans omnis turba flevit nocte illa,
Al the Israelites muttered at Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, 'Would toGod we had died in Egypt, or even that we had died in this desert!2 et murmurati sunt contra Moysen et Aaron cuncti filii Israël, dicentes :
Why has Yahweh brought us to this country, for us to perish by the sword and our wives and childrento be seized as booty? Should we not do better to go back to Egypt?'3 Utinam mortui essemus in Ægypto : et in hac vasta solitudine utinam pereamus, et non inducat nos Dominus in terram istam, ne cadamus gladio, et uxores ac liberi nostri ducantur captivi. Nonne melius est reverti in Ægyptum ?
And they said to one another, 'Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.'4 Dixeruntque alter ad alterum : Constituamus nobis ducem, et revertamur in Ægyptum.
At this, Moses and Aaron threw themselves on their faces in front of the whole assembled communityof Israelites,5 Quo audito, Moyses et Aaron ceciderunt proni in terram coram omni multitudine filiorum Israël.
while Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the men who had reconnoitred thecountry, tore their clothes6 At vero Josue filius Nun et Caleb filius Jephone, qui et ipsi lustraverant terram, sciderunt vestimenta sua,
and addressed the whole community of Israelites as fol ows, 'The country we went to reconnoitre is agood country, an excel ent country.7 et ad omnem multitudinem filiorum Israël locuti sunt : Terra, quam circuivimus, valde bona est.
If Yahweh is pleased with us, he will lead us into this country and give it to us. It is a country flowingwith milk and honey.8 Si propitius fuerit Dominus, inducet nos in eam, et tradet humum lacte et melle manantem.
But do not rebel against Yahweh or be afraid of the people of the country, for we shal gobble themup. Their protecting shade has deserted them, while we have Yahweh on our side. Do not be afraid of them.'9 Nolite rebelles esse contra Dominum : neque timeatis populum terræ hujus, quia sicut panem ita eos possumus devorare. Recessit ab eis omne præsidium : Dominus nobiscum est, nolite metuere.
The whole community was talking of stoning them, when the glory of Yahweh appeared to al theIsraelites, inside the Tent of Meeting,10 Cumque clamaret omnis multitudo, et lapidibus eos vellet opprimere, apparuit gloria Domini super tectum fœderis cunctis filiis Israël.
and Yahweh said to Moses: 'How much longer wil these people treat me with contempt? How muchlonger will they refuse to trust me, in spite of al the signs I have displayed among them?11 Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen : Usquequo detrahet mihi populus iste ? quousque non credent mihi, in omnibus signis quæ feci coram eis ?
I shall strike them with pestilence and disown them. And of you I shall make a new nation, greaterand mightier than they are.'12 Feriam igitur eos pestilentia, atque consumam : te autem faciam principem super gentem magnam, et fortiorem quam hæc est.
Moses said to Yahweh: 'Suppose the Egyptians hear about this -- for by your power you broughtthese people out of their country-13 Et ait Moyses ad Dominum : Ut audiant Ægyptii, de quorum medio eduxisti populum istum,
and tel the people living in this country. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are with this people, and that you, Yahweh, show yourself to them face to face; that your cloud stands over them and that you gobefore them in a pil ar of cloud by day and a pil ar of fire by night.14 et habitatores terræ hujus, qui audierunt quod tu, Domine, in populo isto sis, et facie videaris ad faciem, et nubes tua protegat illos, et in columna nubis præcedas eos per diem, et in columna ignis per noctem :
If you kil this people now as though it were one man, then the nations who have heard about youwil say,15 quod occideris tantam multitudinem quasi unum hominem, et dicant :
"Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the country which he had sworn to give them, and sohe has slaughtered them in the desert."16 Non poterat introducere populum in terram pro qua juraverat : idcirco occidit eos in solitudine ?
No, my Lord! Now is the time to assert your power as you promised when you said, earlier,17 Magnificetur ergo fortitudo Domini sicut jurasti, dicens :
"Yahweh, slow to anger and rich in faithful love, forgiving faults and transgression, and yet lettingnothing go unchecked, punishing the parents' guilt in the children to the third and fourth generation."18 Dominus patiens et multæ misericordiæ, auferens iniquitatem et scelera, nullumque innoxium derelinquens, qui visitas peccata patrum in filios in tertiam et quartam generationem.
In your most faithful love, please forgive this people's guilt, as you have done from Egypt until now.'19 Dimitte, obsecro, peccatum populi hujus secundum magnitudinem misericordiæ tuæ, sicut propitius fuisti egredientibus de Ægypto usque ad locum istum.
Yahweh said, 'I forgive them as you ask.20 Dixitque Dominus : Dimisi juxta verbum tuum.
But -- as I live, and as the glory of Yahweh fills the whole world-21 Vivo ego : et implebitur gloria Domini universa terra.
of all these people who have seen my glory and the signs that I worked in Egypt and in the desert, who have put me to the test ten times already and not obeyed my voice,22 Attamen omnes homines qui viderunt majestatem meam, et signa quæ feci in Ægypto et in solitudine, et tentaverunt me jam per decem vices, nec obedierunt voci meæ,
not one shal see the country which I promised to give their ancestors. Not one of those who havetreated me contemptuously will see it.23 non videbunt terram pro qua juravi patribus eorum, nec quisquam ex illis qui detraxit mihi, intuebitur eam.
However, since my servant Caleb is of another spirit and since he has obeyed me completely, I shallbring him into the country where he has been, and his descendants will own it24 Servum meum Caleb, qui plenus alio spiritu secutus est me, inducam in terram hanc, quam circuivit ; et semen ejus possidebit eam.
(the Amalekites and Canaanites occupy the plain). Tomorrow you wil turn about and go back intothe desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph.'25 Quoniam Amalecites et Chananæus habitant in vallibus. Cras movete castra, et revertimini in solitudinem per viam maris Rubri.
Yahweh then spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:26 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron, dicens :
'How much longer am I to endure this perverse community muttering against me? I have heard whatthe Israelites mutter against me.27 Usquequo multitudo hæc pessima murmurat contra me ? querelas filiorum Israël audivi.
Say to them, "As I live, Yahweh declares, I shal do to you what I have heard you saying.28 Dic ergo eis : Vivo ego, ait Dominus : sicut locuti estis audiente me, sic faciam vobis.
In this desert your dead bodies wil fal , al you who were counted in the census, from the age oftwenty years and over who have muttered against me.29 In solitudine hac jacebunt cadavera vestra. Omnes qui numerati estis a viginti annis et supra, et murmurastis contra me,
I swear none of you will enter the country where I swore most solemnly to settle you, except Calebson of Jephunneh, and Joshua son of Nun.30 non intrabitis terram, super quam levavi manum meam ut habitare vos facerem, præter Caleb filium Jephone, et Josue filium Nun.
Your children, who you said would be seized as booty, wil be the ones whom I shal bring in so thatthey get to know the country you disdained,31 Parvulos autem vestros, de quibus dixistis quod prædæ hostibus forent, introducam, ut videant terram, quæ vobis displicuit.
but, as for you, your dead bodies wil fall in this desert32 Vestra cadavera jacebunt in solitudine.
and your children wil be nomads in the desert for forty years, bearing the consequences of yourfaithlessness, until the last one of you lies dead in the desert.33 Filii vestri erunt vagi in deserto annis quadraginta, et portabunt fornicationem vestram, donec consumantur cadavera patrum in deserto,
For forty days you reconnoitred the country. Each day wil count as a year: for forty years you willbear the consequences of your guilt and learn what it means to reject me."34 juxta numerum quadraginta dierum, quibus considerastis terram : annus pro die imputabitur. Et quadraginta annis recipietis iniquitates vestras, et scietis ultionem meam :
I, Yahweh, have spoken: this is how I swear to treat this entire perverse community united againstme. In this desert, to the last man, they shall die.'35 quoniam sicut locutus sum, ita faciam omni multitudini huic pessimæ, quæ consurrexit adversum me : in solitudine hac deficiet, et morietur.
The men whom Moses had sent to reconnoitre the country and who on their return had incited thewhole community of Israel to mutter about him by disparaging it,36 Igitur omnes viri, quos miserat Moyses ad contemplandam terram, et qui reversi murmurare fecerant contra eum omnem multitudinem, detrahentes terræ quod esset mala,
these men who had disparaged the country were al struck dead before Yahweh.37 mortui sunt atque percussi in conspectu Domini.
Of the men who had gone to reconnoitre the country, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son ofJephunneh were left alive.38 Josue autem filius Nun, et Caleb filius Jephone, vixerunt ex omnibus qui perrexerant ad considerandam terram.
When Moses told all the Israelites what had been said, the people set up a great outcry.39 Locutusque est Moyses universa verba hæc ad omnes filios Israël, et luxit populus nimis.
Early next morning they set out for the heights of the hil country saying, 'Look, we wil set out for theplace about which Yahweh said that we have sinned.'40 Et ecce mane primo surgentes ascenderunt verticem montis, atque dixerunt : Parati sumus ascendere ad locum, de quo Dominus locutus est : quia peccavimus.
To which, Moses said, 'Why disobey Yahweh's order? No success wil come of doing so.41 Quibus Moyses : Cur, inquit, transgredimini verbum Domini, quod vobis non cedet in prosperum ?
Do not go, for Yahweh is not among you, and you wil be defeated by your enemies.42 nolite ascendere : non enim est Dominus vobiscum : ne corruatis coram inimicis vestris.
For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are ahead of you, and you wil be put to the sword, since youhave turned away from Yahweh, and Yahweh is not with you.'43 Amalecites et Chananæus ante vos sunt, quorum gladio corruetis, eo quod nolueritis acquiescere Domino : nec erit Dominus vobiscum.
All the same, they presumptuously set off for the heights of the hil country. Neither the ark of thecovenant of Yahweh nor Moses left the camp.44 At illi contenebrati ascenderunt in verticem montis. Arca autem testamenti Domini et Moyses non recesserunt de castris.
The Amalekites and Canaanites living in those highlands then came down, defeated them andharried them al the way to Hormah.45 Descenditque Amalecites et Chananæus, qui habitabat in monte : et percutiens eos atque concidens, persecutus est eos usque Horma.
