Numbers 14

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The whole community then cried out in dismay, and the people wept al that night.	1 Entonces la comunidad en pleno prorrumpió en fuertes gritos, y el pueblo lloró toda aquella noche.
2 Al the Israelites muttered at Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, 'Would toGod we had died in Egypt, or even that we had died in this desert!	2 Los israelitas protestaban contra Moisés y Aarón, y toda la comunidad les decía: ¡Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en Egipto! ¡Ojalá muriéramos en este desierto!
3 Why has Yahweh brought us to this country, for us to perish by the sword and our wives and childrento be seized as booty? Should we not do better to go back to Egypt?'	3 ¿Por qué el Señor nos quiere hacer entrar en esa tierra donde caeremos bajo la espada? ¡Nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos serán llevados como botín! ¡Más nos valdría regresar a Egipto!
4 And they said to one another, 'Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.'	4 Y se decían unos a otros: «¡Elijamos un jefe y volvamos a Egipto!».
5 At this, Moses and Aaron threw themselves on their faces in front of the whole assembled communityof Israelites,	5 Moisés y Aarón cayeron con el rostro en tierra delante de toda la comunidad de los israelitas reunidos en asamblea.
6 while Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the men who had reconnoitred thecountry, tore their clothes	6 Pero Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Iefuné –que estaban entre los que habían explorado el país– rasgaron su ropa
7 and addressed the whole community of Israelites as fol ows, 'The country we went to reconnoitre is agood country, an excel ent country.	7 y dijeron a toda la comunidad de los israelitas: «La tierra que hemos recorrido y explorado es extraordinariamente buena.
8 If Yahweh is pleased with us, he will lead us into this country and give it to us. It is a country flowingwith milk and honey.	8 Si el Señor nos favorece, nos hará entrar en esa tierra que mana leche y miel, y nos la dará.
9 But do not rebel against Yahweh or be afraid of the people of the country, for we shal gobble themup. Their protecting shade has deserted them, while we have Yahweh on our side. Do not be afraid of them.'	9 Pero no se rebelen contra el Señor, ni le tengan miedo a la gente del país, porque los venceremos fácilmente. Su sombra protectora se ha apartado de ellos; con nosotros, en cambio, está el Señor. ¡No les tengan miedo!».
10 The whole community was talking of stoning them, when the glory of Yahweh appeared to al theIsraelites, inside the Tent of Meeting,	10 Toda la comunidad amenazaba con matarlos a pedradas, cuando la gloria del Señor se manifestó a todos los israelitas en la Carpa del Encuentro.
11 and Yahweh said to Moses: 'How much longer wil these people treat me with contempt? How muchlonger will they refuse to trust me, in spite of al the signs I have displayed among them?	11 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: «¿Hasta cuándo este pueblo me seguirá despreciando? ¿Hasta cuándo no creerán en mí, a pesar de los signos que realicé en medio de ellos?
12 I shall strike them with pestilence and disown them. And of you I shall make a new nation, greaterand mightier than they are.'	12 Los voy a castigar con una peste y los voy a desheredar. De ti, en cambio, suscitaré una nación mucho más fuerte que ellos».
13 Moses said to Yahweh: 'Suppose the Egyptians hear about this -- for by your power you broughtthese people out of their country-	13 Pero Moisés respondió al Señor: «Cuando oigan la noticia los egipcios –de cuyo país sacaste a este pueblo gracias a tu poder–
14 and tel the people living in this country. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are with this people,and that you, Yahweh, show yourself to them face to face; that your cloud stands over them and that you gobefore them in a pil ar of cloud by day and a pil ar of fire by night.	14 se la pasarán a los habitantes de esa tierra. Ellos han oído que tú, Señor, estás en medio de este pueblo; que te dejas ver claramente cuando tu nube se detiene sobre ellos; y que avanzas delante de ellos, de día en la columna de nube, y de noche en la columna de fuego.
15 If you kil this people now as though it were one man, then the nations who have heard about youwil say,	15 Si haces morir a este pueblo como si fuera un solo hombre, las naciones que conocen tu fama, dirán:
16 "Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the country which he had sworn to give them, and sohe has slaughtered them in the desert."	16 «El Señor era impotente para llevar a ese pueblo hasta la tierra que le había prometido con un juramento, y los mató en el desierto».
17 No, my Lord! Now is the time to assert your power as you promised when you said, earlier,	17 Por eso, Señor, manifiesta la grandeza de tu poder, como tú lo has declarado, cuando dijiste:
18 "Yahweh, slow to anger and rich in faithful love, forgiving faults and transgression, and yet lettingnothing go unchecked, punishing the parents' guilt in the children to the third and fourth generation."	18 «El Señor es lento para enojarse y está lleno de misericordia. El tolera la maldad y la rebeldía, pero no las deja impunes, sino que castiga la culpa de los padres en los hijos y en los nietos hasta la cuarta generación».
19 In your most faithful love, please forgive this people's guilt, as you have done from Egypt until now.'	19 Perdona, por favor, la culpa de este pueblo según tu gran misericordia y como lo has venido tolerando desde Egipto hasta aquí».
20 Yahweh said, 'I forgive them as you ask.	20 El Señor respondió: «Lo perdono, como tú me lo has pedido.
21 But -- as I live, and as the glory of Yahweh fills the whole world-	21 Sin embargo –tan cierto como que yo vivo, y que la gloria del Señor llena toda la tierra–
22 of all these people who have seen my glory and the signs that I worked in Egypt and in the desert,who have put me to the test ten times already and not obeyed my voice,	22 ninguno de los hombres que vieron mi gloria y los prodigios que realicé en Egipto y en el desierto, ninguno de los que ya me han puesto a prueba diez veces y no me han obedecido,
23 not one shal see the country which I promised to give their ancestors. Not one of those who havetreated me contemptuously will see it.	23 verá la tierra que prometí a sus padres con un juramento; no la verá ninguno de los que me han despreciado.
24 However, since my servant Caleb is of another spirit and since he has obeyed me completely, I shallbring him into the country where he has been, and his descendants will own it	24 En cuanto a mi servidor Caleb, por estar animado de otro espíritu y haberse mantenido fiel a mí, lo llevaré a la tierra donde ya entró una vez, y sus descendientes la poseerán.
25 (the Amalekites and Canaanites occupy the plain). Tomorrow you wil turn about and go back intothe desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph.'	25 Pero como los amalecitas y los cananeos ocupan el valle, den vuelta mañana y partan para el desierto por el camino del Mar Rojo».
26 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:	26 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:
27 'How much longer am I to endure this perverse community muttering against me? I have heard whatthe Israelites mutter against me.	27 «¿Hasta cuándo esta comunidad perversa va a seguir protestando contra mí? Ya escuché las incesantes protestas de los israelitas.
28 Say to them, "As I live, Yahweh declares, I shal do to you what I have heard you saying.	28 Por eso, diles: «Juro por mi vida, palabra del Señor, que los voy a tratar conforme a las palabras que ustedes han pronunciado.
29 In this desert your dead bodies wil fal , al you who were counted in the census, from the age oftwenty years and over who have muttered against me.	29 Por haber protestado contra mí, sus cadáveres quedarán tendidos en el desierto: los cadáveres de todos los registrados en el censo, de todos los que tienen más de veinte años.
30 I swear none of you will enter the country where I swore most solemnly to settle you, except Calebson of Jephunneh, and Joshua son of Nun.	30 Ni uno solo entrará en la tierra donde juré establecerlos, salvo Caleb hijo de Iefuné y Josué hijo de Nun.
31 Your children, who you said would be seized as booty, wil be the ones whom I shal bring in so thatthey get to know the country you disdained,	31 A sus hijos, en cambio, a los que ustedes decían que iban a ser llevados como botín, sí los haré entrar; ellos conocerán la tierra que ustedes han despreciado.
32 but, as for you, your dead bodies wil fall in this desert	32 Pero los cadáveres de ustedes quedarán tendidos en este desierto.
33 and your children wil be nomads in the desert for forty years, bearing the consequences of yourfaithlessness, until the last one of you lies dead in the desert.	33 Mientras tanto, sus hijos andarán vagando por el desierto durante cuarenta años, sufriendo por las prostituciones de ustedes, hasta que el último cadáver quede tendido en el desierto.
34 For forty days you reconnoitred the country. Each day wil count as a year: for forty years you willbear the consequences of your guilt and learn what it means to reject me."	34 Ustedes cargarán con su culpa durante cuarenta años, por los cuarenta días que emplearon en explorar la tierra: a razón de un año por cada día. Entonces conocerán lo que significa rebelarse contra mí.
35 I, Yahweh, have spoken: this is how I swear to treat this entire perverse community united againstme. In this desert, to the last man, they shall die.'	35 Así lo he dispuesto yo, el Señor. De esa manera trataré a toda esta comunidad perversa que se ha confabulado contra mí: hasta el último hombre morirá en este desierto».
36 The men whom Moses had sent to reconnoitre the country and who on their return had incited thewhole community of Israel to mutter about him by disparaging it,	36 Los hombres que Moisés envió a explorar el territorio –esos que al volver instigaron a toda la comunidad a protestar contra él, difundiendo falsos rumores
37 these men who had disparaged the country were al struck dead before Yahweh.	37 y propagando malas noticias acerca de la tierra– cayeron muertos en las presencia del Señor.
38 Of the men who had gone to reconnoitre the country, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son ofJephunneh were left alive.	38 De los que habían ido a explorar el territorio, solamente sobrevivieron Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Iefuné.
39 When Moses told all the Israelites what had been said, the people set up a great outcry.	39 Cuando Moisés repitió estas palabras a todos los israelitas, el pueblo quedó muy afligido.
40 Early next morning they set out for the heights of the hil country saying, 'Look, we wil set out for theplace about which Yahweh said that we have sinned.'	40 Y a la madrugada del día siguiente subieron a la parte más alta de la montaña, diciendo: «Estamos preparados para ir al lugar que el Señor ha indicado, porque en realidad estábamos en un error».
41 To which, Moses said, 'Why disobey Yahweh's order? No success wil come of doing so.	41 Pero Moisés replicó: «¿Por qué están transgrediendo la orden del Señor? Eso no va a dar buen resultado.
42 Do not go, for Yahweh is not among you, and you wil be defeated by your enemies.	42 No suban, y así no serán derrotados por sus enemigos, ya que el Señor no está en medio de ustedes.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are ahead of you, and you wil be put to the sword, since youhave turned away from Yahweh, and Yahweh is not with you.'	43 Los amalecitas y los cananeos saldrán a hacerles frente, y ustedes caerán bajo la espada, porque se han apartado del Señor y él no estará con ustedes».
44 All the same, they presumptuously set off for the heights of the hil country. Neither the ark of thecovenant of Yahweh nor Moses left the camp.	44 Pero ellos se obstinaron en subir a la cima de la montaña, a pesar de que ni el Arca de la Alianza del Señor ni Moisés se movieron del campamento.
45 The Amalekites and Canaanites living in those highlands then came down, defeated them andharried them al the way to Hormah.	45 Entonces bajaron los amalecitas y los cananeos que habitaban en aquella región montañosa, derrotaron a los israelitas y los fueron exterminando hasta Jormá.
