Daniel 5

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his noblemen, a thousand of them, and, in the presence ofthis thousand, he drank his wine.	1 Il re Baltassar fece un gran convito a mille dei suoi principi, e ognuno beveva secondo la sua età.
2 Having tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave orders for the gold and silver vessels to be brought which hisfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the sanctuary in Jerusalem, so that the king, his noblemen, his wivesand the women who sang for him could drink out of them.	2 Già pieno di vino, ordinò che i vasi d'oro e d'argento dal suo padre Nabucodonosor presi al tempio che era stato in Gerusalemme, fossero portati per bevervi il re, i suoi cortigiani, le sue mogli e concubine.
3 The gold and silver vessels taken from the sanctuary of the Temple of God in Jerusalem were broughtin, and the king, his noblemen, his wives and the women who sang for him drank out of them.	3 Furon portati i vasi d'oro e d'argento presi al tempio che era stato in Gerusalemme e vi bevvero il re, i suoi cortigiani, le sue mogli e le sue concubine.
4 They drank their wine and praised their idols of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone.	4 Essi, bevendo il vino, celebravano i loro dèi d'oro, d'argento, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra.
5 Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appeared and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall,directly behind the lamp-stand; and the king could see the hand as it wrote.	5 Ma in quel momento apparvero delle dita come di una mano d'uomo che scriveva di faccia al candelabro sull'intonaco della muraglia della sala reale. Il re stava ad osservare le dita della mano che scriveva.
6 The king turned pale with alarm: his hip-joints went slack and his knees began to knock.	6 Allora il re mutò di colore, fu turbato dai suoi pensieri, gli si rilassarono le giunture dei fianchi, i ginocchi gli battevano un contro l'altro.
7 He shouted for his soothsayers, Chaldaeans, and exorcists. And the king said to the Babylonian sages,'Anyone who can read this writing and tel me what it means shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of goldput round his neck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	7 Il re gridò con tutta la sua forza che fossero fatti venire i maghi, i Caldei, e gli aruspici. Poi il re, presa la parola, disse ai sapienti di Babilonia: « Chiunque leggerà questa scrittura e me ne farà sapere il significato, sarà rivestito di porpora, avrà al suo collo una collana d'oro, e sarà la terza persona del mio regno ».
8 The king's sages al crowded forward, but they could neither read the writing nor explain to the kingwhat it meant.	8 Entrarono allora tutti i sapienti del re, ma non poterono nè leggere la scrittura, nè dirne il significato.
9 Greatly alarmed, King Belshazzar turned even paler, and his noblemen were equal y disturbed.	9 Il re Baltassar ne restò molto conturbato e sfigurato nel volto ed anche i suoi cortigiani eran costernati.
10 Then the queen, attracted by the noise made by the king and his noblemen, came into the banquetinghall. 'May Your Majesty live for ever!' said the queen. 'Do not be alarmed, do not look so pale.	10 Or la regina, saputo quanto era accaduto al re e ai cortigiani, entrò nella sala, del convito, e, presa la parola, disse: « O re, vivi in eterno! Non ti conturbino i tuoi pensieri, non si alteri la tua faccia:
11 In your kingdom there is a man in whom lives the spirit of the holy gods. In your father's days he wasknown for a perception, intelligence and wisdom comparable to that of the gods. King Nebuchadnezzar, yourfather, made him head of the magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists.	11 nel tuo regno v'è un uomo in cui risiede lo spirito dei santi dèi; al tempo di tuo padre fu riconosciuta in lui scienza e sapienza: infatti lo stesso re Nabucodonosor, tuo padre, lo costituì principe dei maghi, degli incantatori, dei Caldei, e degli aruspici, il padre tuo, dico, o re;
12 Since this man Daniel, whom the king had renamed Belteshazzar, is filled with such a marvel ousspirit and such knowledge and intel igence in interpreting dreams, solving enigmas and unravel ing difficultproblems, send for him; he wil be able to tell you what this means.'	12 perchè fu trovato in lui uno spirito superiore, e sapienza e intelligenza nell'esporre i sogni, nell'investigare gli arcani, nel risolvere le quistioni più difficili. (Quest'uomo) è Daniele, a cui il re diede il nome di Baltassar. Si faccia dunque chiamare Daniele ed egli darà la spiegazione ».
13 Daniel was brought into the king's presence; the king said to Daniel, 'Are you the Daniel who was oneof the Judaean exiles brought by my father the king from Judah?	13 Fu allora fatto entrare Daniele davanti al re, il quale prese a dirgli: « Sei tu quel Daniele, degli esuli figli di Giuda, condotto dalla Giudea dal re mio padre?
14 I am told that the spirit of the gods lives in you, and that you are known for your perception,intelligence and marvel ous wisdom.	14 Ho sentito dire di te che hai lo spirito degli dèi, e scienza, intelligenza e sapienza straordinaria.
15 The sages and soothsayers have already been brought to me to read this writing and tel me what itmeans, but they have been unable to reveal its meaning.	15 Son venuti davanti a me i sapienti e i maghi, per leggere questa scrittura e spiegarne il significato; ma non hanno potuto dirmi il senso di queste parole.
16 I am told that you are able to give interpretations and to unravel difficult problems, so if you can readthe writing and tel me what it means, you shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round yourneck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	16 Ma io ho sentito dire che tu puoi interpretare le cose oscure, risolvere le quistioni difficili. Or se puoi leggere la scrittura e darmene la spiegazione, sarai rivestito di porpora, avrai al tuo collo una collana d'oro, sarai la terza persona del mio regno ».
17 Then Daniel spoke up in the presence of the king. 'Keep your gifts for yourself,' he said, 'and give yourrewards to others! I can certainly read the writing to the king and tel him what it means.	17 Presa la parola per rispondere a tali cose, Daniele disse al re: « Tienti i tuoi doni, dà ad altri gli onori della tua reggia, chè io, o re, ti leggerò lo stesso la scrittura, e te ne darò l'interpretazione.
18 Your Majesty, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father sovereignty, greatness, majestyand glory.	18 O re, l'Altissimo Dio diede a Nabucodonosor, tuo padre, il regno, la magnificenza, la gloria e l'onore;
19 He made him so great that al peoples, nations and languages shook with dread before him: he kil edwhom he pleased, spared whom he pleased, promoted whom he pleased, degraded whom he pleased.	19 per la grandezza che aveva a lui data; tutti i popoli, le tribù e le lingue, dinanzi a lui tremavano pieni di timore: egli faceva morire chi voleva, castigava chi gli pareva, esaltava chi gli piaceva, ed umiliava chi credeva bene.
20 But because his heart grew swollen with pride, and his spirit stiff with arrogance, he was deposed fromhis sovereign throne and stripped of his glory.	20 Ma quando il suo cuore si gonfiò e il suo spirito s'ostinò nella superbia, egli fu deposto dal trono del suo regno, e gli fu tolta la sua gloria,
21 He was driven from human society, his heart was more like an animal's than a man's; he lived with thewild donkeys; he fed on grass like oxen; his body was drenched by the dew of heaven, until he had learnt thatthe Most High rules over human sovereignty and appoints whom he pleases to rule it.	21 e fu cacciato dalla società, ebbe di più un cuore simile a quello delle bestie, stette cogli asini selvatici, e mangiò fieno qual bue, il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, finché non riconobbe che l'Altissimo ha dominio sul regno degli uomini, al quale esso innalza chiunque gli pare.
22 But you, Belshazzar, who are his son, you have not humbled your heart, in spite of knowing all this.	22 E anche tu, o Baltassar, suo figlio dopo aver sapute queste cose, non hai umiliato il tuo cuore;
23 You have defied the Lord of heaven, you have had the vessels from his Temple brought to you, andyou, your noblemen, your wives and the women singing for you have drunk your wine out of them. You havepraised gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, which can neither see, hear norunderstand; but you have given no glory to the God in whose hands are your breath itself and al your fortunes.	23 chè anzi ti sei innalzato contro il dominatore del cielo, hai fatto portare dinanzi a te i vasi del suo tempio, vi hai bevuto il vino tu, i tuoi cortigiani, le tue mogli, le tue concubine, celebrando gli dèi d'argento, d'oro, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno, di pietra, i quali nè vedono, nè odono, 24 nè conoscono, e non hai glorificato quel Dio in mano del quale è il tuo respiro ed ogni tuo movimento.
24 That is why he has sent the hand which has written these words.	24 Per questo da lui è stato mandato il dito di quella mano la quale ha scritto ciò che là si trova.
25 The writing reads: mene, mene, teqel and parsin.	25 Ecco la scrittura che vi è stesa: « Mane, Tecel, Fares ».
26 The meaning of the words is this: mene: God has measured your sovereignty and put an end to it;	26 Ed ecco la spiegazione di queste parole: « Mane »: Dio ha contati i giorni del tuo regno, e vi ha posto termine.
27 teqel: you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting;	27 « Tecel»: Sei stato pesato sulla bilancia, e trovato scarso.
28 parsin: your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.'	28 « Fares»: Il tuo regno è stato diviso e dato ai Medi e ai Persiani ».
29 At Belshazzar's order Daniel was dressed in purple, a chain of gold was put round his neck and hewas proclaimed as one of the three men who governed the kingdom.	29 Allora, per comando del re, Daniele fu vestito di porpora, gli fu messa al collo una collana d'oro e fu pubblicato ch'egli doveva avere in dignità il terzo grado nel suo regno.
30 That same night, the Chaldaean king Belshazzar was murdered,	30 Nella stessa notte fu ucciso Bai tassar re dei Caldei,
	31 e Dario, il Medo, gli succedette nel regno in età di sessantadue anni.
