NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his noblemen, a thousand of them, and, in the presence ofthis thousand, he drank his wine.	1 Il re Baldassàr servì un solenne banchetto ai suoi mille dignitari e alla presenza di costoro fece abbondanti libagioni di vino.
2 Having tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave orders for the gold and silver vessels to be brought which hisfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the sanctuary in Jerusalem, so that the king, his noblemen, his wivesand the women who sang for him could drink out of them.	2 Baldassàr ordinò tra i fumi del vino di portare i vasi d'oro e d'argento che suo padre Nabucodònosor aveva asportato dal tempio di Gerusalemme, affinché vi bevessero il re, i suoi dignitari, le sue mogli e le sue concubine.
3 The gold and silver vessels taken from the sanctuary of the Temple of God in Jerusalem were broughtin, and the king, his noblemen, his wives and the women who sang for him drank out of them.	3 Così si portarono i vasi d'oro e d'argento che erano stati asportati dal santuario del tempio di Dio a Gerusalemme e in essi bevvero il re, i suoi dignitari, le sue mogli e le sue concubine.
4 They drank their wine and praised their idols of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone.	4 Mentre bevevano vino e lodavano gli dèi d'oro e d'argento, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra,
5 Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appeared and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall,directly behind the lamp-stand; and the king could see the hand as it wrote.	5 improvvisamente apparvero delle dita di mano d'uomo e si misero a scrivere dietro al candelabro sopra la calce della parete del palazzo reale e il re vedeva il palmo della mano che scriveva.
6 The king turned pale with alarm: his hip-joints went slack and his knees began to knock.	6 Allora il re mutò il colore della faccia e i suoi pensieri lo turbarono; le giunture dei suoi fianchi si sciolsero e i suoi ginocchi battevano l'uno contro l'altro.
7 He shouted for his soothsayers, Chaldaeans, and exorcists. And the king said to the Babylonian sages,'Anyone who can read this writing and tel me what it means shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of goldput round his neck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	7 Il re ordinò con autorità di far venire i maghi, i caldei e gli astrologi. Il re dichiarò ai sapienti di Babilonia: "Chiunque leggerà questa scrittura e mi farà conoscere la sua interpretazione, indosserà la porpora, gli si metterà una collana d'oro intorno al collo e sarà terzo nel governo del regno".
8 The king's sages al crowded forward, but they could neither read the writing nor explain to the kingwhat it meant.	8 Allora accorsero tutti i sapienti del re, ma non riuscirono a leggere la scrittura e a darne l'interpretazione al re.
9 Greatly alarmed, King Belshazzar turned even paler, and his noblemen were equal y disturbed.	9 Così il re Baldassàr rimase molto turbato, la sua faccia cambiò colore e i suoi dignitari furono atterriti.
10 Then the queen, attracted by the noise made by the king and his noblemen, came into the banquetinghall. 'May Your Majesty live for ever!' said the queen. 'Do not be alarmed, do not look so pale.	10 La regina, scossa dalle parole del re e dei suoi dignitari, entrò nella sala del convito. La regina prese a dire: "O re, vivi in eterno! Non ti turbino i tuoi pensieri e il colore della tua faccia non cambi.
11 In your kingdom there is a man in whom lives the spirit of the holy gods. In your father's days he wasknown for a perception, intelligence and wisdom comparable to that of the gods. King Nebuchadnezzar, yourfather, made him head of the magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists.	11 C'è un uomo nel tuo regno che possiede lo spirito degli dèi santi. Fin dai tempi di tuo padre furono trovati in lui intelletto, intelligenza e sapienza simile alla sapienza degli dèi. Cosicché il re Nabucodònosor tuo padre lo pose a capo dei maghi, degli indovini, dei caldei e degli astrologi.
12 Since this man Daniel, whom the king had renamed Belteshazzar, is filled with such a marvel ousspirit and such knowledge and intel igence in interpreting dreams, solving enigmas and unravel ing difficultproblems, send for him; he wil be able to tell you what this means.'	12 Poiché uno spirito superiore, scienza e intelligenza, l'interpretazione dei sogni, la conoscenza degli enigmi, la soluzione delle cose difficili sono state trovate in lui, Daniele, a cui il re pose nome Baltazzàr; ora sia chiamato Daniele ed egli indicherà l'interpretazione".
13 Daniel was brought into the king's presence; the king said to Daniel, 'Are you the Daniel who was oneof the Judaean exiles brought by my father the king from Judah?	13 Così Daniele fu introdotto alla presenza del re. Allora il re prese a dire a Daniele: "Sei tu Daniele dei deportati di Giuda che il re mio padre condusse dalla Giudea?
14 I am told that the spirit of the gods lives in you, and that you are known for your perception,intelligence and marvel ous wisdom.	14 Ho inteso di te che hai lo spirito degli dèi e che intelletto, intelligenza e sapienza superiore si trovano in te.
15 The sages and soothsayers have already been brought to me to read this writing and tel me what itmeans, but they have been unable to reveal its meaning.	15 Ora sono stati fatti venire alla mia presenza i sapienti e gli indovini perché leggessero questa scritta e me ne indicassero l'interpretazione, ma non sono stati capaci di indicare il significato della cosa.
16 I am told that you are able to give interpretations and to unravel difficult problems, so if you can readthe writing and tel me what it means, you shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round yourneck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	16 Io ho inteso che tu puoi dare spiegazioni e risolvere cose difficili. Ora se tu sei capace di leggere la scrittura e di farmene conoscere il senso, rivestirai la porpora, una collana d'oro sarà posta intorno al tuo collo e condividerai come terzo il potere del regno!".
17 Then Daniel spoke up in the presence of the king. 'Keep your gifts for yourself,' he said, 'and give yourrewards to others! I can certainly read the writing to the king and tel him what it means.	17 Allora Daniele rispose e disse al re: "I tuoi doni tiènili per te e i tuoi regali dàlli a un altro. Tuttavia io leggerò la scrittura al re e gli indicherò il significato.
18 Your Majesty, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father sovereignty, greatness, majestyand glory.	18 Tu sei il re! Dio Altissimo aveva concesso regno, grandezza, potenza e maestà a Nabucodònosor tuo padre;
19 He made him so great that al peoples, nations and languages shook with dread before him: he kil edwhom he pleased, spared whom he pleased, promoted whom he pleased, degraded whom he pleased.	19 e, per la grandezza che gli aveva concesso, tutti i popoli, le nazioni e le lingue lo temevano e tremavano davanti a lui; uccideva chi voleva e lasciava in vita chi voleva; innalzava chi gli pareva e abbassava chi voleva.
20 But because his heart grew swollen with pride, and his spirit stiff with arrogance, he was deposed fromhis sovereign throne and stripped of his glory.	20 E siccome il suo cuore si era inorgoglito e il suo spirito si era indurito fino all'arroganza, fu deposto dal trono della sua regalità e gli tolsero la sua gloria.
21 He was driven from human society, his heart was more like an animal's than a man's; he lived with thewild donkeys; he fed on grass like oxen; his body was drenched by the dew of heaven, until he had learnt thatthe Most High rules over human sovereignty and appoints whom he pleases to rule it.	21 Fu espulso di mezzo ai figli dell'uomo, divenne simile il suo cuore a quello degli animali, e la sua dimora fu con gli asini selvatici; gli dettero in pasto erba come ai buoi e dalla rugiada del cielo il suo corpo fu bagnato, finché non riconobbe che Dio Altissimo domina sui regni umani e sopra vi colloca chi vuole.
22 But you, Belshazzar, who are his son, you have not humbled your heart, in spite of knowing all this.	22 Ma tu, Baldassàr, suo figlio, non tenesti umile il tuo cuore, benché tu sapessi ogni cosa;
23 You have defied the Lord of heaven, you have had the vessels from his Temple brought to you, andyou, your noblemen, your wives and the women singing for you have drunk your wine out of them. You havepraised gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, which can neither see, hear norunderstand; but you have given no glory to the God in whose hands are your breath itself and al your fortunes.	23 ti sei innalzato contro il Signore del cielo, ti sei fatto portare davanti i vasi della sua casa, per bervi il vino, tu e i tuoi dignitari, le tue mogli e le tue concubine, e hai reso lode agli dèi d'argento e d'oro, di bronzo, di rame, di legno e di pietra, che non vedono e non sentono e non conoscono, invece di glorificare il Dio nella cui mano è il tuo spirito e al quale appartengono tutte le tue vie.
24 That is why he has sent the hand which has written these words.	24 Allora egli ha inviato il palmo della mano e ha tracciato questa scrittura.
25 The writing reads: mene, mene, teqel and parsin.	25 Questa è la scrittura che è stata tracciata: mené, tekél, perés.
26 The meaning of the words is this: mene: God has measured your sovereignty and put an end to it;	26 Questo è il significato delle parole: mené: Dio ha misurato il tuo regno e gli ha fissato un termine;
27 teqel: you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting;	27 tekél: sei stato pesato nella stadera e sei stato trovato al di sotto;
28 parsin: your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.'	28 perés: è stato diviso il tuo regno ed è stato dato ai Medi e ai Persiani!".
29 At Belshazzar's order Daniel was dressed in purple, a chain of gold was put round his neck and hewas proclaimed as one of the three men who governed the kingdom.	29 Allora Baldassàr ordinò che vestissero Daniele di porpora e ponessero intorno al suo collo una collana d'oro e proclamassero che egli era terzo nel governo del regno.
30 That same night, the Chaldaean king Belshazzar was murdered,	30 In quella stessa notte Baldassàr, re dei Caldei, fu ucciso,
