Daniel 5

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his noblemen, a thousand of them, and, in the presence ofthis thousand, he drank his wine.	1 בלשאצר מלכא עבד לחם רב לרברבנוהי אלף ולקבל אלפא חמרא שתה
2 Having tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave orders for the gold and silver vessels to be brought which hisfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the sanctuary in Jerusalem, so that the king, his noblemen, his wivesand the women who sang for him could drink out of them.	2 בלשאצר אמר בטעם חמרא להיתיה למאני דהבא וכספא די הנפק נבוכדנצר אבוהי מן היכלא די בירושלם וישתון בהון מלכא ורברבנוהי שגלתה ולחנתה
3 The gold and silver vessels taken from the sanctuary of the Temple of God in Jerusalem were broughtin, and the king, his noblemen, his wives and the women who sang for him drank out of them.	3 באדין היתיו מאני דהבא די הנפקו מן היכלא די בית אלהא די בירושלם ואשתיו בהון מלכא ורברבנוהי שגלתה ולחנתה
4 They drank their wine and praised their idols of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone.	4 אשתיו חמרא ושבחו לאלהי דהבא וכספא נחשא פרזלא אעא ואבנא
5 Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appeared and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall,directly behind the lamp-stand; and the king could see the hand as it wrote.	5 בה שעתה נפקו אצבען די יד אנש וכתבן לקבל נברשתא על גירא די כתל היכלא די מלכא ומלכא חזה פס ידה די כתבה
6 The king turned pale with alarm: his hip-joints went slack and his knees began to knock.	6 אדין מלכא זיוהי שנוהי ורעינהי יבהלונה וקטרי חרצה משתרין וארכבתה דא לדא נקשן
7 He shouted for his soothsayers, Chaldaeans, and exorcists. And the king said to the Babylonian sages,'Anyone who can read this writing and tel me what it means shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of goldput round his neck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	7 קרא מלכא בחיל להעלה לאשפיא כשדיא וגזריא ענה מלכא ואמר לחכימי בבל די כל אנש די יקרה כתבה דנה ופשרה יחונני ארגונא ילבש והמונכא די דהבא על צוארה ותלתי במלכותא ישלט
8 The king's sages al crowded forward, but they could neither read the writing nor explain to the kingwhat it meant.	8 אדין עללין כל חכימי מלכא ולא כהלין כתבא למקרא ופשרא להודעה למלכא
9 Greatly alarmed, King Belshazzar turned even paler, and his noblemen were equal y disturbed.	9 אדין מלכא בלשאצר שגיא מתבהל וזיוהי שנין עלוהי ורברבנוהי משתבשין
10 Then the queen, attracted by the noise made by the king and his noblemen, came into the banquetinghall. 'May Your Majesty live for ever!' said the queen. 'Do not be alarmed, do not look so pale.	10 מלכתא לקבל מלי מלכא ורברבנוהי לבית משתיא עללת ענת מלכתא ואמרת מלכא לעלמין חיי אל יבהלוך רעיונך וזיויך אל ישתנו
11 In your kingdom there is a man in whom lives the spirit of the holy gods. In your father's days he wasknown for a perception, intelligence and wisdom comparable to that of the gods. King Nebuchadnezzar, yourfather, made him head of the magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists.	11 איתי גבר במלכותך די רוח אלהין קדישין בה וביומי אבוך נהירו ושכלתנו וחכמה כחכמת אלהין השתכחת בה ומלכא נבכדנצר אבוך רב חרטמין אשפין כשדאין גזרין הקימה אבוך מלכא
12 Since this man Daniel, whom the king had renamed Belteshazzar, is filled with such a marvel ousspirit and such knowledge and intel igence in interpreting dreams, solving enigmas and unravel ing difficultproblems, send for him; he wil be able to tell you what this means.'	12 כל קבל די רוח יתירה ומנדע ושכלתנו מפשר חלמין ואחוית אחידן ומשרא קטרין השתכחת בה בדניאל די מלכא שם שמה בלטשאצר כען דניאל יתקרי ופשרה יהחוה
13 Daniel was brought into the king's presence; the king said to Daniel, 'Are you the Daniel who was oneof the Judaean exiles brought by my father the king from Judah?	13 באדין דניאל העל קדם מלכא ענה מלכא ואמר לדניאל אנתה הוא דניאל די מן בני גלותא די יהוד די היתי מלכא אבי מן יהוד
14 I am told that the spirit of the gods lives in you, and that you are known for your perception,intelligence and marvel ous wisdom.	14 ושמעת עליך די רוח אלהין בך ונהירו ושכלתנו וחכמה יתירה השתכחת בך
15 The sages and soothsayers have already been brought to me to read this writing and tel me what itmeans, but they have been unable to reveal its meaning.	15 וכען העלו קדמי חכימיא אשפיא די כתבה דנה יקרון ופשרה להודעתני ולא כהלין פשר מלתא להחויה
16 I am told that you are able to give interpretations and to unravel difficult problems, so if you can readthe writing and tel me what it means, you shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round yourneck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	16 ואנה שמעת עליך די תוכל פשרין למפשר וקטרין למשרא כען הן תוכל כתבא למקרא ופשרה להודעתני ארגונא תלבש והמונכא די דהבא על צוארך ותלתא במלכותא תשלט
17 Then Daniel spoke up in the presence of the king. 'Keep your gifts for yourself,' he said, 'and give yourrewards to others! I can certainly read the writing to the king and tel him what it means.	17 באדין ענה דניאל ואמר קדם מלכא מתנתך לך להוין ונבזביתך לאחרן הב ברם כתבא אקרא למלכא ופשרא אהודענה
18 Your Majesty, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father sovereignty, greatness, majestyand glory.	18 אנתה מלכא אלהא עליא מלכותא ורבותא ויקרא והדרה יהב לנבכדנצר אבוך
19 He made him so great that al peoples, nations and languages shook with dread before him: he kil edwhom he pleased, spared whom he pleased, promoted whom he pleased, degraded whom he pleased.	19 ומן רבותא די יהב לה כל עממיא אמיא ולשניא הוו זאעין ודחלין מן קדמוהי די הוה צבא הוא קטל ודי הוה צבא הוה מחא ודי הוה צבא הוה מרים ודי הוה צבא הוה משפיל
20 But because his heart grew swollen with pride, and his spirit stiff with arrogance, he was deposed fromhis sovereign throne and stripped of his glory.	20 וכדי רם לבבה ורוחה תקפת להזדה הנחת מן כרסא מלכותה ויקרה העדיו מנה
21 He was driven from human society, his heart was more like an animal's than a man's; he lived with thewild donkeys; he fed on grass like oxen; his body was drenched by the dew of heaven, until he had learnt thatthe Most High rules over human sovereignty and appoints whom he pleases to rule it.	21 ומן בני אנשא טריד ולבבה עם חיותא שוי ועם ערדיא מדורה עשבא כתורין יטעמונה ומטל שמיא גשמה יצטבע עד די ידע די שליט אלהא עליא במלכות אנשא ולמן די יצבה יהקים עליה
22 But you, Belshazzar, who are his son, you have not humbled your heart, in spite of knowing all this.	22 ואנתה ברה בלשאצר לא השפלת לבבך כל קבל די כל דנה ידעת
23 You have defied the Lord of heaven, you have had the vessels from his Temple brought to you, andyou, your noblemen, your wives and the women singing for you have drunk your wine out of them. You havepraised gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, which can neither see, hear norunderstand; but you have given no glory to the God in whose hands are your breath itself and al your fortunes.	23 ועל מרא שמיא התרוממת ולמאניא די ביתה היתיו קדמיך ואנתה ורברבניך שגלתך ולחנתך חמרא שתין בהון ולאלהי כספא ודהבא נחשא פרזלא אעא ואבנא די לא חזין ולא שמעין ולא ידעין שבחת ולאלהא די נשמתך בידה וכל ארחתך לה לא הדרת
24 That is why he has sent the hand which has written these words.	24 באדין מן קדמוהי שליח פסא די ידא וכתבא דנה רשים
25 The writing reads: mene, mene, teqel and parsin.	25 ודנה כתבא די רשים מנא מנא תקל ופרסין
26 The meaning of the words is this: mene: God has measured your sovereignty and put an end to it;	26 דנה פשר מלתא מנא מנה אלהא מלכותך והשלמה
27 teqel: you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting;	27 תקל תקילתה במאזניא והשתכחת חסיר
28 parsin: your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.'	28 פרס פריסת מלכותך ויהיבת למדי ופרס
29 At Belshazzar's order Daniel was dressed in purple, a chain of gold was put round his neck and hewas proclaimed as one of the three men who governed the kingdom.	29 באדין אמר בלשאצר והלבישו לדניאל ארגונא והמונכא די דהבא על צוארה והכרזו עלוהי די להוא שליט תלתא במלכותא
30 That same night, the Chaldaean king Belshazzar was murdered,	30 בה בליליא קטיל בלאשצר מלכא כשדיא
	31 ודריוש מדיא קבל מלכותא כבר שנין שתין ותרתין
