1 King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his noblemen, a thousand of them, and, in the presence ofthis thousand, he drank his wine.	1 Le roi Balthazar fit un grand festin pour mille de ses hauts fonctionnaires, et devant ces mille invités il but du vin.
2 Having tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave orders for the gold and silver vessels to be brought which hisfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the sanctuary in Jerusalem, so that the king, his noblemen, his wivesand the women who sang for him could drink out of them.	2 Après avoir goûté le vin, Balthazar donna l’ordre d’apporter les vases d’or et d’argent que son père Nabukodonozor avait enlevés dans le Temple de Jérusalem. Il voulait y boire, lui le roi, ses hauts fonctionnaires, ses femmes et ses concubines.
3 The gold and silver vessels taken from the sanctuary of the Temple of God in Jerusalem were broughtin, and the king, his noblemen, his wives and the women who sang for him drank out of them.	3 On apporta donc les vases d’or qui avaient été enlevés du Temple de Dieu à Jérusalem. Le roi et ses hauts fonctionnaires, ses femmes et ses concubines les prirent pour boire:
4 They drank their wine and praised their idols of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone.	4 ils burent du vin à la santé de leurs dieux d’or, d’argent, de bronze, de fer, de bois et de pierre.
5 Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appeared and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall,directly behind the lamp-stand; and the king could see the hand as it wrote.	5 Or, à un moment, les doigts d’une main humaine apparurent face au chandelier: ils écrivaient sur le plâtre du mur du palais royal. Le roi vit cette main qui écrivait,
6 The king turned pale with alarm: his hip-joints went slack and his knees began to knock.	6 et aussitôt il changea de couleur: il était effrayé, tremblant de tout son corps et de tous ses membres.
7 He shouted for his soothsayers, Chaldaeans, and exorcists. And the king said to the Babylonian sages,'Anyone who can read this writing and tel me what it means shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of goldput round his neck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	7 Il cria d’une voix forte pour qu’on appelle les magiciens, les sorciers et les astrologues, et devant les sages de Babylone le roi prit la parole: “L’homme qui lira cette écriture et me fera connaître sa signification sera habillé de pourpre, on lui mettra au cou un collier d’or et il aura la troisième place dans le royaume.”
8 The king's sages al crowded forward, but they could neither read the writing nor explain to the kingwhat it meant.	8 Tous les sages du roi qui étaient venus étaient incapables de déchiffrer l’inscription et d’en donner le sens.
9 Greatly alarmed, King Belshazzar turned even paler, and his noblemen were equal y disturbed.	9 Le roi Balthazar fut donc plus effrayé encore, il était sans couleurs et ses hauts fonctionnaires étaient bouleversés.
10 Then the queen, attracted by the noise made by the king and his noblemen, came into the banquetinghall. 'May Your Majesty live for ever!' said the queen. 'Do not be alarmed, do not look so pale.	10 En apprenant les paroles du roi et de ses hauts fonctionnaires, la reine entra dans la salle du festin, elle prit la parole et dit: “Vive le roi à jamais! Que tes pensées ne te troublent pas et que ton visage ne change pas ainsi de couleur.
11 In your kingdom there is a man in whom lives the spirit of the holy gods. In your father's days he wasknown for a perception, intelligence and wisdom comparable to that of the gods. King Nebuchadnezzar, yourfather, made him head of the magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists.	11 Il y a un homme dans ton royaume qui a en lui l’esprit des dieux saints. Pendant le règne de ton père on a pu se rendre compte qu’il y avait en lui une lumière, un jugement et une sagesse digne des dieux. Aussi le roi ton père l’a-t-il établi chef des devins, des magiciens, des sorciers et des astrologues.
12 Since this man Daniel, whom the king had renamed Belteshazzar, is filled with such a marvel ousspirit and such knowledge and intel igence in interpreting dreams, solving enigmas and unravel ing difficultproblems, send for him; he wil be able to tell you what this means.'	12 On a remarqué en lui un esprit supérieur, une intelligence, un jugement, l’art d’expliquer les songes, d’interpréter les mystères et de résoudre les problèmes: je parle de Daniel à qui le roi avait donné le nom de Baltsasar. Appelons donc Daniel et il nous dira ce que signifie tout cela.”
13 Daniel was brought into the king's presence; the king said to Daniel, 'Are you the Daniel who was oneof the Judaean exiles brought by my father the king from Judah?	13 On amena donc Daniel en présence du roi. Le roi prit la parole et lui dit: “Es-tu bien Daniel, l’un des déportés que mon père a fait venir de Juda?
14 I am told that the spirit of the gods lives in you, and that you are known for your perception,intelligence and marvel ous wisdom.	14 On me dit que l’esprit des dieux est en toi et qu’on a remarqué en toi une lumière, un jugement et une sagesse extraordinaires.
15 The sages and soothsayers have already been brought to me to read this writing and tel me what itmeans, but they have been unable to reveal its meaning.	15 Or justement on vient de me faire venir les sages et les magiciens pour lire cette écriture et m’en donner la signification, mais ils n’ont pas été capables de le faire.
16 I am told that you are able to give interpretations and to unravel difficult problems, so if you can readthe writing and tel me what it means, you shal be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round yourneck, and be one of the three men who govern the kingdom.'	16 Ensuite on m’a dit que tu es capable d’interpréter et de résoudre les problèmes. Si tu peux lire l’écriture et me faire connaître sa signification, tu seras habillé de pourpre, tu porteras au cou un collier d’or et tu seras le troisième personnage du royaume.”
17 Then Daniel spoke up in the presence of the king. 'Keep your gifts for yourself,' he said, 'and give yourrewards to others! I can certainly read the writing to the king and tel him what it means.	17 Alors Daniel prit la parole et, devant le roi, il dit: “Garde tes cadeaux pour toi ou donne-les à d’autres! Je vais déchiffrer pour le roi cette écriture et je lui en ferai connaître la signification.
18 Your Majesty, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father sovereignty, greatness, majestyand glory.	18 Ô roi, le Dieu Très-Haut a donné à ton père Nabukodonozor la royauté, la puissance, la gloire et la majesté.
19 He made him so great that al peoples, nations and languages shook with dread before him: he kil edwhom he pleased, spared whom he pleased, promoted whom he pleased, degraded whom he pleased.	19 À cause de cette puissance qu’il avait reçue, les hommes de tous les peuples, nations et langues, étaient pris de crainte et de tremblement devant lui. Il tuait ou laissait vivre à son gré, il élevait ou abaissait qui il voulait.
20 But because his heart grew swollen with pride, and his spirit stiff with arrogance, he was deposed fromhis sovereign throne and stripped of his glory.	20 Mais lorsque son cœur s’est gonflé d’orgueil et que son esprit s’est endurci, il fut rejeté de son trône royal et la gloire lui fut enlevée.
21 He was driven from human society, his heart was more like an animal's than a man's; he lived with thewild donkeys; he fed on grass like oxen; his body was drenched by the dew of heaven, until he had learnt thatthe Most High rules over human sovereignty and appoints whom he pleases to rule it.	21 Il fut chassé du milieu des hommes car son esprit était devenu comme celui d’une bête; il habitait avec les ânes sauvages, se nourrissait d’herbe comme le bœuf, et son corps était trempé de la rosée du ciel. Cela dura jusqu’au jour où il reconnut que le Dieu Très-Haut est maître des royautés humaines et qu’il y appelle celui qu’il veut.
22 But you, Belshazzar, who are his son, you have not humbled your heart, in spite of knowing all this.	22 “Mais toi, Balthazar son fils, tu ne t’es pas humilié alors que tu connaissais tout cela.
23 You have defied the Lord of heaven, you have had the vessels from his Temple brought to you, andyou, your noblemen, your wives and the women singing for you have drunk your wine out of them. You havepraised gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, which can neither see, hear norunderstand; but you have given no glory to the God in whose hands are your breath itself and al your fortunes.	23 Au contraire, tu t’es dressé contre le Seigneur des cieux, tu as a fait apporter devant toi les vases de son Temple et vous y avez bu du vin, toi, tes hauts fonctionnaires, tes femmes et tes concubines. Et vous avez bu à la santé de vos dieux d’argent et d’or, de bronze, de fer, de bois et de pierre, qui ne voient rien, qui n’entendent rien et qui ne savent rien. Mais tu n’as pas glorifié le Dieu qui tient ta vie dans sa main et à qui appartiennent toutes tes voies.
24 That is why he has sent the hand which has written these words.	24 “Alors cette main a été envoyée de sa part pour tracer cette écriture,
25 The writing reads: mene, mene, teqel and parsin.	25 et l’écriture tracée, la voilà: Méné, Méné, Tékel et Parsine.
26 The meaning of the words is this: mene: God has measured your sovereignty and put an end to it;	26 Maintenant, voici l’explication de ces mots: Méné: Dieu a mesuré ton royaume et il y a mis fin.
27 teqel: you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting;	27 Tékel: tu as été pesé dans la balance et ton poids s’est trouvé bien léger.
28 parsin: your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.'	28 Parsine: ton royaume a été divisé et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses.”
29 At Belshazzar's order Daniel was dressed in purple, a chain of gold was put round his neck and hewas proclaimed as one of the three men who governed the kingdom.	29 Alors Balthazar ordonna d’habiller Daniel de pourpre, de lui mettre au cou un collier d’or et de proclamer qu’il était maintenant le troisième personnage du royaume.
30 That same night, the Chaldaean king Belshazzar was murdered,	30 Mais cette nuit-là le roi kaldéen Balthazar fut assassiné.
