Daniel 14

1 When King Astyages joined his ancestors, Cyrus of Persia succeeded him.	1 Daniele mangiava alla tavola del re, ed ora da lui onorato sopra tutti i suoi amici.
2 Daniel was very close to the king, who respected him more than any of his other friends.	2 Or i Babilonesi avevano un idolo chiamato Bel, per il quale consumavano ogni giorno dodici artabe di fior di farina, quaranta pecore, e sei anfore di vino.
3 Now, in Babylon there was an idol cal ed Bel, to which twelve bushels of the finest flour, forty sheepand six measures of wine were offered every day.	3 Il re stesso lo venerava e andava ogni giorno ad adorarlo. Siccome Daniele adorava il suo Dio, il re gli disse: « Perchè non adori Bel? »
4 The king venerated this idol and used to go and worship it every day. Daniel, however, worshipped hisown God.	4 Daniele gli rispose: « Perchè io non venero degli idoli fatti colle mani, ma Dio vivo che creò il cielo e la terra, ed è Signore di tutti i viventi ».
5 'Why do you not worship Bel?' the king asked Daniel. 'I do not worship idols made by human hand,'Daniel replied, 'I worship the living God who made heaven and earth and who is lord over al living creatures.'	5 Il re gli disse: « Non ti sembra che sia un dio vivo Bel? E non vedi quanto mangia e quanto beve ogni giorno? »
6 'Do you not believe, then,' said the king, 'that Bel is a living god? Can you not see how much he eatsand drinks each day?'	6 « Non t'ingannare, o re — rispose, sorridendo, Daniele: — egli di dentro è di fango, di fuori è di bronzo, e non mangia mai ».
7 Daniel laughed. 'Your Majesty,' he said, 'do not be taken in; he is clay inside, and bronze outside, andhas never eaten or drunk anything.'	7 Allora il re, montato sulle furie, fece chiamare i sacerdoti di Bel, e disse loro: « Se voi non mi dite chi mangia tutto quello che io spendo, morrete;
8 This made the king angry; he summoned his priests, 'Tel me who eats all this food,' he said, 'or die.Prove to me that Bel real y eats it, and I wil have Daniel put to death for blaspheming him.'	8 se invece mi farete vedere che tante cose le mangia Bel, morrà Daniele, per avere bestemmiato contro Bel». Daniele disse al re: « Sia fatto secondo la tua parola ».
9 Daniel said to the king, 'Let it be as you say.'	9 I sacerdoti di Bel, senza contare le mogli e i figlioli, eran settanta. Essendo andato il re con Daniele al tempio di Bel,
10 There were seventy of these priests, to say nothing of their wives and children. The king went to thetemple of Bel, taking Daniel with him.	10 i sacerdoti di Bel dissero: « Ecco noi andiamo via, e tu, o re, poni le vivande, mesci il vino, chiudi la porta e sigilla col tuo anello;
11 The priests of Bel said to him, 'We shal now go out, and you, Your Majesty, wil lay out the meal andmix the wine and set it out. Then, lock the door and seal it with your personal seal. If, when you return in themorning, you do not find that everything has been eaten by Bel, let us be put to death; otherwise let Daniel, thatslanderer!'	11 e se domattina, quando verrai, non vedrai che Bel abbia mangiato ogni cosa, noi morremo; altrimenti morrà Daniele, che ha detto il falso contro di noi ».
12 They were thinking -- hence their confidence -- of a secret entrance which they had made under thetable, and by which they came in regularly and took the offerings away.	12 Facevano i bravi, perchè sotto la mensa avevan fatta un'apertura segreta per la quale entravano sempre a mangiare quella roba.
13 When the priests had gone and the king had set out the food for Bel,	13 Dopo che, essi se ne furono andati, il re fece porre dinanzi a Bel le vivande. Ma Daniele, fattasi portare dai suoi servi della cenere, facendola passare da uno staccio, la sparse per tutto il tempio alla presenza del re. Poi se ne andarono e, chiusa la porta, la sigillarono coll'anello del re.
14 Daniel made his servants bring ashes and spread them all over the temple floor, with no otherwitness than the king. They then left the building, shut the door and, sealing it with the king's seal, went away.	14 Durante la notte, secondo il solito, i sacerdoti colle mogli e coi figlioli andarono a mangiar tutto e a bere.
15 That night, as usual, the priests came with their wives and children; they ate and drank everything.	15 Il re si levò al primo albore, e così anche Daniele.
16 The king was up very early next morning, and Daniel with him.	16 Il re disse: « Sono intatti i sigilli, o Daniele? » Ed egli rispose: « Intatti, o re ».
17 'Daniel,' said the king, 'are the seals intact?' 'They are intact, Your Majesty,' he replied.	17 Il re appena vide, aperta subito la porta, che la mensa era vuota, gridò ad alta voce: « Tu sei grande, o Bel, e in te non v'è inganno! »
18 The king then opened the door and, taking one look at the table, exclaimed, 'You are great, O Bel!There is no deception in you!'	18 Ma Daniele sorrise, e trattenendo il re, perchè non entrasse dentro, disse: « Guarda il pavimento ed esamina di chi siano quelle pedate ».
19 But Daniel laughed; and, restraining the king from going in any further, he said, 'Look at the floor andtake note whose footmarks these are!'	19 Il re disse: « Vedo delle pedate d'uomini, di donne e di ragazzi ». Allora il re, pieno di sdegno,
20 'I can see the footmarks of men, of women and of children,' said the king,	20 fece prendere i sacerdoti colle loro mogli e i loro figlioli, si fece mostrare le piccole porte per le quali entravano a consumare quello che si trovava sulla mensa,
21 and angrily ordered the priests to be arrested, with their wives and children. They then showed himthe secret door through which they used to come and take what was on the table.	21 e poi li fece morire, dando Bel in potere di Daniele, che lo distrusse col suo tempio.
22 The king had them put to death and handed Bel over to Daniel who destroyed both the idol and itstemple.	22 V'era in quel luogo un gran dragone, e i Babilonesi l'adoravano.
23 There was a great dragon which the Babylonians worshipped too.	23 Disse il re a Daniele: « Ecco ora non potrai dire che questo non sia un dio vivo: adoralo, adunque ».
24 The king said to Daniel, 'Are you going to tel me that this is made of bronze? Look, it is alive; it eatsand drinks; you cannot deny that this is a living god; worship it, then.'	24 Daniele disse: « Io adoro il Signore Dio mio, perchè egli è il Dio vivo; ma questo non è il Dio vivo;
25 Daniel replied, 'I wil worship the Lord my God; he is the living God. With your permission, YourMajesty, without using either sword or club, I shal kil this dragon.'	25 e se tu, o re, me lo permetti, io senza spada e senza bastone ammazzerò il dragone ». Il re disse: « Te lo permetto ».
26 'You have my permission,' said the king.	26 Allora Daniele prese della pece, del grasso e dei peli, li fece cpcere insieme, e, fattene delle polpette, le gettò al dragone. E il dragone crepò. Allora Daniele disse: « Ecco che cosa adoravate! »
27 Whereupon, Daniel took some pitch, some fat and some hair and boiled them up together, rol ed themixture into bal s and fed them to the dragon; the dragon swallowed them and burst. Daniel said, 'Now look atthe sort of thing you worship!'	27 Appena saputolo, i Babilonesi ne furono oltremodo indignati, e, adunatisi contro il re, dissero: « Il re è diventato giudeo: ha distrutto Bel, ha ucciso il dragone, ha nfessi a morte i sacerdoti ».
28 The Babylonians were furious when they heard about this and rose against the king. 'The king hasturned Jew,' they said, 'he has al owed Bel to be overthrown, and the dragon to be kil ed, and he has put thepriests to death.'	28 Poi andarono a trovare il re e dissero: « Dacci nelle mani Daniele, altrimenti uccideremo te e la tua famiglia ».
29 So they went to the king and said, 'Hand Daniel over to us or else we shall kil you and your family.'	29 Quando il re vide che lo assalivano colla violenza, costretto dalla necessità abbandonò loro Daniele.
30 They pressed him so hard that the king found himself forced to hand Daniel over to them.	30 Ed essi lo gettarono nella fossa dei Doni, ove stette sei giorni.
31 They threw Daniel into the lion pit, and there he stayed for six days.	31 Nella fossa c'eran sette leoni ai quali davano ogni giorno due corpi e due pecore, che allora non furono date, affinchè divorassero Daniele.
32 In the pit were seven lions, which were given two human bodies and two sheep every day; but forthis period they were not given anything, to make sure they would eat Daniel.	32 V'era allora in Giudea il profeta Abacuc, il quale, cotto il companatico e fatte delle stiacciate in una teglia, andava al campo a portarle ai mietitori.
33 Now, the prophet Habakkuk was in Judaea: he had been making a stew and breaking up bread intoa basket. He was on his way to the fields, taking this to the harvesters,	33 L'angelo del Signore disse ad Abacuc: « Porta il desinare che hai, in Babilonia, a Daniele, che è nella fossa dei leoni ».
34 when the angel of the Lord spoke to him, 'Take the meal you are carrying to Babylon, and give it toDaniel in the lion pit.'	34 Abacuc disse: « Signore, io non ho visto Babilonia, e non conosco la fossa ».
35 'Lord,' replied Habakkuk, 'I have not even seen Babylon and know nothing about this pit.'	35 Allora l'angelo del Signore lo prese alla cima del capo, pei capelli della testa, e colla celerità dello spirito lo portò e lo posò a Babilonia sopra la fossa.
36 The angel of the Lord took hold of his head and carried him off by the hair to Babylon where, with agreat blast of his breath, he set Habakkuk down on the edge of the pit.	36 Abacuc alzò la voce e disse: « Daniele, servo di Dio, prendi il desinare che Dio t'ha mandato ».
37 'Daniel, Daniel,' Habakkuk shouted, 'take the meal that God has sent you.'	37 Daniele esclamò: « O Signore, ti sei ricordato di me, e non hai abbandonato chi ti ama ».
38 And Daniel said, 'You have kept me in mind, O God; you have not deserted those who love you.'	38 Poi Daniele si alzò e mangiò, e l'angelo del Signore subito riportò Abacuc al suo luogo.
39 Rising to his feet, he ate the meal, while the angel of God carried Habakkuk back in a moment to hisown country.	39 Il settimo giorno il re andò per piangere Daniele. Arrivato alla fossa, vi guardò dentro, e vide Daniele a sedere in mezzo ai leoni.
40 On the seventh day, the king came to lament over Daniel; on reaching the pit he looked inside, andthere sat Daniel.	40 Allora il re gridò ad alta voce ed esclamò: « Tu sei grande, o Signore Dio di Daniele! » E lo trasse fuori della fossa dei leoni.
41 'You are great, O Lord, God of Daniel,' he exclaimed, 'there is no god but you!'	41 Poi fece gettar nella fossa tutti quelli che l'avevan voluto perdere, e questi in un momento furon divorati alla sua presenza.
42 He then had Daniel released from the pit and the plotters of Daniel's ruin thrown in instead, wherethey were instantly eaten before his eyes.	42 Allora il re disse: « Tutti gli abitanti di tutta quanta la terra temano il Dio di Daniele, perchè egli è colui che salva e fa segni e prodigi sulla terra, e ha liberato Daniele dalla fossa dei leoni ».
