Daniel 14

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 When King Astyages joined his ancestors, Cyrus of Persia succeeded him.	1 El rey Astiages fue a reunirse con sus padres, y le sucedió Ciro el Persa.
2 Daniel was very close to the king, who respected him more than any of his other friends.	2 Daniel era comensal del rey y más honrado que ningún otro de sus amigos.
3 Now, in Babylon there was an idol cal ed Bel, to which twelve bushels of the finest flour, forty sheepand six measures of wine were offered every day.	3 Tenían los babilonios un ídolo, llamado Bel, con el que se gastaban cada día doce artabas de flor de harina, cuarenta ovejas y seis medidas de vino.
4 The king venerated this idol and used to go and worship it every day. Daniel, however, worshipped hisown God.	4 El rey también le veneraba y todos los días iba a adorarle. Daniel, en cambio, adoraba a su Dios.
5 'Why do you not worship Bel?' the king asked Daniel. 'I do not worship idols made by human hand,'Daniel replied, 'I worship the living God who made heaven and earth and who is lord over al living creatures.'	5 El rey le dijo: «¿Por qué no adoras a Bel?» El respondió: «Porque yo no venero a ídolos hechos por mano humana, sino solamente al Dios vivo que hizo el cielo y la tierra y que tiene poder sobre toda carne».
6 'Do you not believe, then,' said the king, 'that Bel is a living god? Can you not see how much he eatsand drinks each day?'	6 Díjole el rey: ¿Crees que Bel no es un dios vivo? ¿No ves todo lo que come y bebe a diario?»
7 Daniel laughed. 'Your Majesty,' he said, 'do not be taken in; he is clay inside, and bronze outside, andhas never eaten or drunk anything.'	7 Daniel se echó a reír: «Oh rey, no te engañes - dijo -, por dentro es de arcilla y por fuera de bronce, y eso no ha comido ni bebido jamás».
8 This made the king angry; he summoned his priests, 'Tel me who eats all this food,' he said, 'or die.Prove to me that Bel real y eats it, and I wil have Daniel put to death for blaspheming him.'	8 Entonces el rey, montando en cólera, mandó llamar a sus sacerdotes y les dijo: «Si no me decís quién es el que come este dispendio, moriréis; pero si demostráis que el que lo come es Bel, morirá Daniel por haber blasfemado contra Bel».
9 Daniel said to the king, 'Let it be as you say.'	9 Daniel dijo al rey: «¡Hágase según tu palabra!» Eran setenta los sacerdotes de Bel, sin contar las mujeres y los hijos.
10 There were seventy of these priests, to say nothing of their wives and children. The king went to thetemple of Bel, taking Daniel with him.	10 El rey se dirigió, pues, con Daniel al templo de Bel,
11 The priests of Bel said to him, 'We shal now go out, and you, Your Majesty, wil lay out the meal andmix the wine and set it out. Then, lock the door and seal it with your personal seal. If, when you return in themorning, you do not find that everything has been eaten by Bel, let us be put to death; otherwise let Daniel, thatslanderer!'	11 y los sacerdotes de Bel le dijeron: «Mira, nosotros vamos a salir de aquí; tú, oh rey, manda poner la comida y el vino mezclado; luego cierra la puerta y séllada con tu anillo; si mañana por la mañana, cuando vuelvas, no encuentras que Bel se lo ha comido todo, moriremos nosotros; en caso contrario, morirá Daniel que nos ha calumniado».
12 They were thinking -- hence their confidence -- of a secret entrance which they had made under thetable, and by which they came in regularly and took the offerings away.	12 Estaban ellos tranquilos, porque se habían hecho una entrada secreta debajo de la mesa y por allí entraban normalmente a llevarse las ofrendas.
13 When the priests had gone and the king had set out the food for Bel,	13 En cuanto salieron y el rey depositó la comida ante Bel,
14 Daniel made his servants bring ashes and spread them all over the temple floor, with no otherwitness than the king. They then left the building, shut the door and, sealing it with the king's seal, went away.	14 Daniel mandó a sus criados que trajeran ceniza y la esparcieran por todo el suelo del templo, sin más testigo que el rey. Luego salieron, cerraron la puerta, la sellaron con el anillo real, y se fueron.
15 That night, as usual, the priests came with their wives and children; they ate and drank everything.	15 Los sacerdotes vinieron por la noche, como de costumbre, con sus mujeres y sus hijos, y se lo comieron y bebieron todo.
16 The king was up very early next morning, and Daniel with him.	16 El rey se levantó muy temprano y Daniel con él.
17 'Daniel,' said the king, 'are the seals intact?' 'They are intact, Your Majesty,' he replied.	17 El rey le preguntó: «Daniel, ¿están intactos los sellos?» - «Intactos, oh rey», respondió él.
18 The king then opened the door and, taking one look at the table, exclaimed, 'You are great, O Bel!There is no deception in you!'	18 Nada más abierta la puerta, el rey echó una mirada a la mesa y gritó en alta voz: «¡Grande eres, Bel, y no hay en ti engaño alguno!»
19 But Daniel laughed; and, restraining the king from going in any further, he said, 'Look at the floor andtake note whose footmarks these are!'	19 Daniel se echó a reír y, deteniendo al rey para que no entrara más adentro, le dijo: «Mira, mira al suelo, y repara de quién son esas huellas».
20 'I can see the footmarks of men, of women and of children,' said the king,	20 - «Veo huellas de hombres, de mujeres y de niños», dijo el rey;
21 and angrily ordered the priests to be arrested, with their wives and children. They then showed himthe secret door through which they used to come and take what was on the table.	21 y, montando en cólera, mandó detener a los sacerdotes con sus mujeres y sus hijos. Ellos le mostraron entonces la puerta secreta por la que entraban a consumir lo que había sobre la mesa.
22 The king had them put to death and handed Bel over to Daniel who destroyed both the idol and itstemple.	22 Y el rey mandó matarlos y entregó a Bel en manos de Daniel, el cual lo destruyó, así como su templo.
23 There was a great dragon which the Babylonians worshipped too.	23 Habían también una gran serpiente a la que los babilonios veneraban.
24 The king said to Daniel, 'Are you going to tel me that this is made of bronze? Look, it is alive; it eatsand drinks; you cannot deny that this is a living god; worship it, then.'	24 El rey dijo a Daniel: «¿Vas a decir también que ésta es de bronce? Mira, está viva y come y bebe: no puedes decir que no es un dios vivo; así que adórale».
25 Daniel replied, 'I wil worship the Lord my God; he is the living God. With your permission, YourMajesty, without using either sword or club, I shal kil this dragon.'	25 Daniel respondió: «Yo adoro sólo al Señor mi Dios; él es el Dios vivo. Mas tú, oh rey, dame permiso y yo mataré a esta serpiente sin espada ni estaca».
26 'You have my permission,' said the king.	26 Dijo el rey: «Te lo doy».
27 Whereupon, Daniel took some pitch, some fat and some hair and boiled them up together, rol ed themixture into bal s and fed them to the dragon; the dragon swallowed them and burst. Daniel said, 'Now look atthe sort of thing you worship!'	27 Daniel tomó entonces pez, grasa y pelos, lo coció todo junto e hizo con ello unas bolitas que echó en las fauces de la serpiente; la serpiente las tragó y reventó. Y dijo Daniel: «¡Mirad qué es lo que veneráis!»
28 The Babylonians were furious when they heard about this and rose against the king. 'The king hasturned Jew,' they said, 'he has al owed Bel to be overthrown, and the dragon to be kil ed, and he has put thepriests to death.'	28 Al enterarse los babilonios, se enfurecieron mucho; se amotinaron contra el rey y dijeron: «El rey se ha hecho judío: ha destruido a Bel, ha matado a la serpiente, y a los sacerdotes los ha asesinado».
29 So they went to the king and said, 'Hand Daniel over to us or else we shall kil you and your family.'	29 Fueron, pues, a decir al rey: «Entréganos a Daniel; si no, te mataremos a ti y a toda tu casa».
30 They pressed him so hard that the king found himself forced to hand Daniel over to them.	30 Ante esta gran violencia, el rey se vio obligado a entregarles a Daniel.
31 They threw Daniel into the lion pit, and there he stayed for six days.	31 Ellos le echaron en el foso de los leones, donde estuvo seis días.
32 In the pit were seven lions, which were given two human bodies and two sheep every day; but forthis period they were not given anything, to make sure they would eat Daniel.	32 Había en el foso siete leones a los que se les daba diariamente dos cadáveres y dos carneros; entonces no se les dio nada, para que devoraran a Daniel.
33 Now, the prophet Habakkuk was in Judaea: he had been making a stew and breaking up bread intoa basket. He was on his way to the fields, taking this to the harvesters,	33 Estaba a la sazón en Judea el profeta Habacuc: acababa de preparar un cocido y de desmenuzar pan en un plato, y se dirigía al campo a llevárselo a los segadores.
34 when the angel of the Lord spoke to him, 'Take the meal you are carrying to Babylon, and give it toDaniel in the lion pit.'	34 El ángel del Señor dijo a Habacuc: «Lleva esa comida que tienes a Babilonia, a Daniel que está en el foso de los leones».
35 'Lord,' replied Habakkuk, 'I have not even seen Babylon and know nothing about this pit.'	35 «Señor - dijo Habacuc - no he visto jamás Babilonia ni conozco ese foso».
36 The angel of the Lord took hold of his head and carried him off by the hair to Babylon where, with agreat blast of his breath, he set Habakkuk down on the edge of the pit.	36 Entonces el ángel del Señor le agarró por la cabeza y, llevándole por los cabellos, le puso en Babilonia, encima del foso, con la rapidez de su soplo.
37 'Daniel, Daniel,' Habakkuk shouted, 'take the meal that God has sent you.'	37 Habacuc gritó: «Daniel, Daniel, toma la comida que el Señor te ha enviado».
38 And Daniel said, 'You have kept me in mind, O God; you have not deserted those who love you.'	38 Y dijo Daniel; «Te has acordado de mí, Dios mío, y no has abandonado a los que te aman».
39 Rising to his feet, he ate the meal, while the angel of God carried Habakkuk back in a moment to hisown country.	39 Y Daniel se levantó y se puso a comer, mientras el ángel de Dios volvía a llevar al instante a Habacuc a su lugar.
40 On the seventh day, the king came to lament over Daniel; on reaching the pit he looked inside, andthere sat Daniel.	40 El día séptimo, vino el rey a llorar a Daniel; se acercó al foso, miró, y he aquí que Daniel estaba allí sentado.
41 'You are great, O Lord, God of Daniel,' he exclaimed, 'there is no god but you!'	41 Entonces exclamó: «Grande eres, Señor, Dios de Daniel, y no hay otro Dios fuera de ti».
42 He then had Daniel released from the pit and the plotters of Daniel's ruin thrown in instead, wherethey were instantly eaten before his eyes.	42 Luego mandó sacarle y echar allá a aquellos que habían querido perderle, los cuales fueron al instante devorados en su presencia.
