Daniel 14

1 When King Astyages joined his ancestors, Cyrus of Persia succeeded him.	1 - E Daniele era commensale del re e onorato sopra tutti gli amici suoi.
2 Daniel was very close to the king, who respected him more than any of his other friends.	2 Ora, presso i Babilonesi, c'era un idolo di nome Bel, pel quale si spendevano ciascun giorno dodici artabe di fior di farina e quaranta pecore e sei anfore di vino.
3 Now, in Babylon there was an idol cal ed Bel, to which twelve bushels of the finest flour, forty sheepand six measures of wine were offered every day.	3 E anche il re gli prestava culto, e andava tutti i giorni ad adorarlo; Daniele però adorava il suo Dio. Onde il re gli disse: «Perchè non adori tu Bel?».
4 The king venerated this idol and used to go and worship it every day. Daniel, however, worshipped hisown God.	4 Gli rispose dicendo: «Perchè idoli fabbricati con le mani io non ne adoro, ma bensì il Dio vivente che creò il cielo e la terra e ha signoria sopra tutti gli uomini».
5 'Why do you not worship Bel?' the king asked Daniel. 'I do not worship idols made by human hand,'Daniel replied, 'I worship the living God who made heaven and earth and who is lord over al living creatures.'	5 Disse il re: «Non ti pare che Bel sia un dio vivo? non vedi quante cose mangia e beve tutti i giorni?».
6 'Do you not believe, then,' said the king, 'that Bel is a living god? Can you not see how much he eatsand drinks each day?'	6 E Daniele in tono di derisione: «Non lasciarti ingannare, o re; poichè di dentro è di creta, di fuori è di metallo e non mangia mai!».
7 Daniel laughed. 'Your Majesty,' he said, 'do not be taken in; he is clay inside, and bronze outside, andhas never eaten or drunk anything.'	7 Irritato il re chiamò i sacerdoti del dio e disse loro: «Se voi non mi dite chi è che mangia tutto ciò che per lui qui si spende, voi morrete.
8 This made the king angry; he summoned his priests, 'Tel me who eats all this food,' he said, 'or die.Prove to me that Bel real y eats it, and I wil have Daniel put to death for blaspheming him.'	8 E se farete vedere che se lo mangia Bel, morirà Daniele, perchè ha bestemmiato contro Bel». Daniele soggiunse al re: «Sia fatto secondo la tua parola».
9 Daniel said to the king, 'Let it be as you say.'	9 Or i sacerdoti di Bel, non contando le mogli, i bambini e i figliuoli, erano settanta. Si recò dunque il re e Daniele al tempio.
10 There were seventy of these priests, to say nothing of their wives and children. The king went to thetemple of Bel, taking Daniel with him.	10 Dissero i sacerdoti di Bel: «Eccoci, noi ce ne usciamo fuori, tu, o re, fa' apprestare le vivande, fa' mescere il vino e chiudere la porta e la sigillerai col tuo anello.
11 The priests of Bel said to him, 'We shal now go out, and you, Your Majesty, wil lay out the meal andmix the wine and set it out. Then, lock the door and seal it with your personal seal. If, when you return in themorning, you do not find that everything has been eaten by Bel, let us be put to death; otherwise let Daniel, thatslanderer!'	11 Domani, rientrato che sarai, se non troverai tutto consumato da Bel, morremo noi; in caso diverso, morrà Daniele come quegli che ha mentito contro di noi».
12 They were thinking -- hence their confidence -- of a secret entrance which they had made under thetable, and by which they came in regularly and took the offerings away.	12 Se ne facevano giuoco, perchè avevano praticato sotto la mensa un ingresso nascosto per il quale sempre entravano e divoravano quel che c'era.
13 When the priests had gone and the king had set out the food for Bel,	13 Adunque dopo che quelli furono usciti il re fece porre le vivande davanti a Bel; e intanto Daniele ordinò ai suoi servi che recassero della cenere e la fece spargere in presenza del re per tutto il tempio, indi usciti, chiusero la porta e sigillatala coll'anello del re se ne andarono.
14 Daniel made his servants bring ashes and spread them all over the temple floor, with no otherwitness than the king. They then left the building, shut the door and, sealing it with the king's seal, went away.	14 I sacerdoti, come solevano fare, entrarono durante la notte con le donne e i figli loro e mangiarono e bevettero tutto.
15 That night, as usual, the priests came with their wives and children; they ate and drank everything.	15 Levatosi il re, se ne venne mattiniero e Daniele con lui.
16 The king was up very early next morning, and Daniel with him.	16 E il re disse: «Sono intatti i sigilli, Daniele?». rispose: «Sono intatti, o re».
17 'Daniel,' said the king, 'are the seals intact?' 'They are intact, Your Majesty,' he replied.	17 E appena ebbe aperta la porta, il re corse coll'occhio alla mensa ed esclamò ad alta voce: «Grande sei, o Bel, e non c'è intorno a te alcuna impostura!».
18 The king then opened the door and, taking one look at the table, exclaimed, 'You are great, O Bel!There is no deception in you!'	18 Rise Daniele, e trattene il re che non si avanzasse più oltre e gli disse: «Ecco sul pavimento, guarda di chi siano queste orme!».
19 But Daniel laughed; and, restraining the king from going in any further, he said, 'Look at the floor andtake note whose footmarks these are!'	19 E il re: «Veggo delle orme di piedi d'uomini, di donne e di bambini!». E andò su tutte le furie.
20 'I can see the footmarks of men, of women and of children,' said the king,	20 Allora fece prendere i sacerdoti e le mogli e i figli loro, e dovettero mostrargli le porticine segrete per dove penetravano, consumando ciò che stava sopra la mensa.
21 and angrily ordered the priests to be arrested, with their wives and children. They then showed himthe secret door through which they used to come and take what was on the table.	21 Il re quindi li fece morire e diede Bel in potere di Daniele che lo atterrò insieme col suo tempio.
22 The king had them put to death and handed Bel over to Daniel who destroyed both the idol and itstemple.	22 In quello stesso luogo vi era un gran dragone, e quei di Babilonia gli prestavano culto.
23 There was a great dragon which the Babylonians worshipped too.	23 E il re disse a Daniele: «Ecco che ora non potrai dire, che questo non sia un dio vivente! Adoralo dunque!».
24 The king said to Daniel, 'Are you going to tel me that this is made of bronze? Look, it is alive; it eatsand drinks; you cannot deny that this is a living god; worship it, then.'	24 Rispose Daniele: «Io adoro il mio Signore Dio, perchè egli è davvero il Dio vivente, mentre questo non è dio vivente.
25 Daniel replied, 'I wil worship the Lord my God; he is the living God. With your permission, YourMajesty, without using either sword or club, I shal kil this dragon.'	25 Concedimi, o re, facoltà ed io ammazzerò questo dragone senza spada nè bastone». E il re disse: «Sì, te lo concedo».
26 'You have my permission,' said the king.	26 Allora Daniele prese della pece, del grasso e dei peli e li mise a bollire insieme; e fattine dei bocconi li gettò in bocca al dragone e il dragone crepò. Allora disse: «Ecco quello che voi adoravate!».
27 Whereupon, Daniel took some pitch, some fat and some hair and boiled them up together, rol ed themixture into bal s and fed them to the dragon; the dragon swallowed them and burst. Daniel said, 'Now look atthe sort of thing you worship!'	27 Udita questa cosa, quei di Babilonia s'indignarono fortemente e adunatisi contro il re dissero: «Il re è diventato giudeo; ha distrutto Bel, ha ammazzato il dragone e uccisi i sacerdoti».
28 The Babylonians were furious when they heard about this and rose against the king. 'The king hasturned Jew,' they said, 'he has al owed Bel to be overthrown, and the dragon to be kil ed, and he has put thepriests to death.'	28 E accorsi dal re dissero: «Consegna nelle nostre mani Daniele, altrimenti ammazziamo te e tutta la tua famiglia!».
29 So they went to the king and said, 'Hand Daniel over to us or else we shall kil you and your family.'	29 Il re vide che volevano assalirlo colla violenza, e costretto dalla necessità diede loro nelle mani Daniele.
30 They pressed him so hard that the king found himself forced to hand Daniel over to them.	30 Essi lo gettarono nella fossa dei leoni dove rimase sei giorni.
31 They threw Daniel into the lion pit, and there he stayed for six days.	31 Or nella fossa vi erano sette leoni, e ogni giorno si gettavano loro due corpi e due pecore; ma in quei giorni non fu dato loro nulla, affinchè divorassero Daniele.
32 In the pit were seven lions, which were given two human bodies and two sheep every day; but forthis period they were not given anything, to make sure they would eat Daniel.	32 Viveva in quel tempo in Giudea il profeta Abacuc, e aveva preparato una zuppa e dei pani da intingere nella salsa e se ne andava in campagna per recarli ai mietitori.
33 Now, the prophet Habakkuk was in Judaea: he had been making a stew and breaking up bread intoa basket. He was on his way to the fields, taking this to the harvesters,	33 L'angelo del Signore disse ad Abacuc: «Reca il pranzo che hai pronto, in Babilonia a Daniele che sta nella fossa dei leoni».
34 when the angel of the Lord spoke to him, 'Take the meal you are carrying to Babylon, and give it toDaniel in the lion pit.'	34 Disse Abacuc: «Signore, io non ho mai visto Babilonia e non so nulla della fossa!».
35 'Lord,' replied Habakkuk, 'I have not even seen Babylon and know nothing about this pit.'	35 Allora l'angelo del Signore lo afferrò alla sommità e lo trasportò per la chioma e lo depose in Babilonia sull'orlo della fossa colla rapidità del suo spirito.
36 The angel of the Lord took hold of his head and carried him off by the hair to Babylon where, with agreat blast of his breath, he set Habakkuk down on the edge of the pit.	36 E Abacuc gridò dicendo: «Daniele servo di Dio, prendi il pranzo che Dio ti ha mandato».
37 'Daniel, Daniel,' Habakkuk shouted, 'take the meal that God has sent you.'	37 Disse Daniele: «Ti sei ricordato di me, o Dio, e non hai lasciato in abbandono quelli che ti amano».
38 And Daniel said, 'You have kept me in mind, O God; you have not deserted those who love you.'	38 Allora Daniele si alzò e mangiò; e intanto l'angelo del Signore riportò in un istante Abacuc al suo luogo.
39 Rising to his feet, he ate the meal, while the angel of God carried Habakkuk back in a moment to hisown country.	39 Il settimo giorno venne il re per piangere sulla sorte di Daniele; si recò alla fossa e sporse dentro lo sguardo: ed ecco che Daniele stava seduto in mezzo ai leoni.
40 On the seventh day, the king came to lament over Daniel; on reaching the pit he looked inside, andthere sat Daniel.	40 Mandando allora una gran voce il re disse: «Grande sei, Signore Dio di Daniele!». E lo trasse fuori dalla fossa dei leoni.
41 'You are great, O Lord, God of Daniel,' he exclaimed, 'there is no god but you!'	41 Ma quelli che avevano cercato la perdita di Daniele furono dal re gettati nella fossa, e sotto i suoi occhi in un momento furono divorati.
42 He then had Daniel released from the pit and the plotters of Daniel's ruin thrown in instead, wherethey were instantly eaten before his eyes.	42 Allora il re disse: «Gli abitanti di tutta la terra temano il Dio di Daniele, egli è che salva, egli che opera portenti e miracoli sulla terra; perchè ha liberato Daniele dalla fossa dei leoni».
