Daniel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	Biblia Matos Soares
1 In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim.	1 Havia um homem, que habitava em Babilónia, cujo nome era Joaquim,
2 He was married to a woman called Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, a woman of great beauty; and shewas God-fearing, for	2 o qual casou com uma mulher chamada Susana, filha de Helcias, formosíssima e temente a Deus,
3 her parents were worthy people and had instructed their daughter in the Law of Moses.	3 porque seus pais, como eram justos, tinham instruído a sua filha segundo a lei de Moisés.
4 Joakim was a very rich man and had a garden by his house; he used to be visited by a considerablenumber of the Jews, since he was held in greater respect than any other man.	4 Ora Joaquim era muito rico e tinha um jardim junto de sua casa; os Judeus concorriam a ele, porque era o mais respeitável de todos.
5 Two elderly men had been selected from the people, that year, to act as judges. Of such the Lord hadsaid, 'Wickedness has come to Babylon through the elders and judges posing as guides to the people.'	5 Naquele ano tinham sido constituídos juízes dois velhos dentre o povo, daqueles de quem o Senhor falou, quando disse; A iniquidade saiu da Babilónia por meio de velhos que eram juízes, os quais pareciam governar o povo.
6 These men were often at Joakim's house, and all who were engaged in litigation used to come tothem.	6 Frequentavam estes a casa de Joaquim onde iam ter com eles os que tinham pleitos para julgar.
7 At midday, when the people had gone away, Susanna would take a walk in her husband's garden.	7 Por volta do meio-dia, quando o povo se tinha retirado, Susana entrava e passeava no jardim do seu marido.
8 The two elders, who used to watch her every day as she came in to take her walk, gradual y began todesire her.	8 Estes velhos viam-na entrar e passear, todos os dias, e conceberam uma paixão por ela.
9 They threw reason aside, making no effort to turn their eyes to Heaven, and forgetting the demands ofvirtue.	9 Perderam o senso e voltaram os seus olhos para não verem o céu, nem se lembraram dos justos juízos.
10 Both were inflamed by passion for her, but they hid their desire from each other,	10 Estavam ambos feridos de paixão por Susana, mas não declararam um ao outro a sua paixão,
11 for they were ashamed to admit the longing to sleep with her,	11 porque se envergonhavam de descobrir um ao outro o desejo de a possuir.
12 but they made sure of watching her every day.	12 Observavam todos os dias com grande cuidado o tempo em que a poderiam ver. (Um, dia) disseram entre si:
13 One day, having parted with the words, 'Let us go home, then, it is time for the midday meal,' theywent off in different directions,	13 Vamos para casa, porque são horas de comer. (Realmente), tendo saído separaram-se um do outro.
14 only to retrace their steps and find themselves face to face again. Obliged then to explain, theyadmitted their desire and agreed to look for an opportunity of surprising her alone.	14 Mas, tornando logo (cada um) a vir, encontraram-se de novo num mesmo lugar. Depois de se terem perguntado mutuamente a causa, confessaram a sua paixão, e, então, de comum acordo, fixaram o tempo em que a poderiam encontrar só.
15 So they waited for a favourable moment; and one day Susanna came as usual, accompanied only bytwo young maidservants. The day was hot and she wanted to bathe in the garden.	15 Aconteceu, pois, que, aguardando eles uma ocasião oportuna, entrou ela, como de costume, acompanhada somente de duas donzelas, e quis banhar-se no jardim, acusam porque fazia (muito) calor.
16 There was no one about except the two elders, spying on her from their hiding place.	16 Não se encontrava então ali ninguém, senão os dois velhos, que estavam escondidos e a contemplavam.
17 She said to the servants, 'Bring me some oil and balsam and shut the garden door while I bathe.'	17 Disse Susana às donzelas: Trazei-me os óleos e os perfumes, e fechai as portas do jardim, para eu tomar banho.
18 They did as they were told, shutting the garden door and going back to the house by a side entranceto fetch what she had asked for; they knew nothing about the elders, for they had concealed themselves.	18 Elas fizeram o que lhes tinha mandado; fecharam as portas do jardim e saíram por uma porta escusa, para trazerem o que lhes havia ordenado, ignorando que os velhos estavam dentro escondidos.
19 Hardly were the maids gone than the two elders sprang up and rushed upon her.	19 Logo que as donzelas saíram, levantaram-se os dois velhos, correram para ela e disseram-lhe:
20 'Look,' they said, 'the garden door is shut, no one can see us. We want to have you, so give in andlet us!	20 Estão fechadas as portas do jardim ; ninguém nos vê, e nós ardemos em paixão por ti ; rende-te, pois, ao nosso desejo, entrega-te a nós.
21 Refuse, and we shal both give evidence that a young man was with you and that this was why yousent your maids away.'	21 Se recusas, daremos testemunho contra ti, dizendo que estava contigo um jovem e que foi por isso que despediste as donzelas.
22 Susanna sighed. 'I am trapped,' she said, 'whatever I do. If I agree, it means death for me; if I resist, Icannot get away from you.	22 (Ao ouvir isto) Susana gemeu e disse: De todas as partes me vejo cercada de angústias: se eu fizer isto, incorro na morte; se não o fizer, não escaparei das vossas mãos.
23 But I prefer to fal innocent into your power than to sin in the eyes of the Lord.'	23 Porém melhor é para mim cair inocente entre as vossas mãos, do que pecar na presença do Senhor.
24 She then cried out as loud as she could. The two elders began shouting too, putting the blame onher,	24 E imediatamente deu Susana um grande grito. Então os dois velhos também gritaram contra ela.
25 and one of them ran to open the garden door.	25 E um deles correu à porta do jardim e abriu-a.
26 The household, hearing the shouting in the garden, rushed out by the side entrance to see what hadhappened to her.	26 Os criados da casa, tendo ouvido gritar no jardim, correram lá pela porta escusa, para verem o que era.
27 Once the elders had told their story, the servants were thoroughly taken aback, since nothing of thissort had ever been said of Susanna.	27 Quando os velhos falaram, ficaram os criados sumamente envergonhados, porque nunca semelhante coisa se tinho dito de Susana.
28 Next day a meeting was held at the house of her husband Joakim. The two elders arrived, ful of theirwicked plea against Susanna, to have her put to death.	28 No dia seguinte, tendo vindo o povo à casa de Joaquim, seu marido, vieram também os dois velhos, cheios de iníquos pensamentos contra Susana, para lhe fazerem perder a vida.
29 They addressed the company, 'Summon Susanna daughter of Hilkiah and wife of Joakim.' She wassent for,	29 Disseram diante do povo: Mandai buscar Susana, filha de Helcias, mulher de Joaquim. Mandaram-na buscar.
30 and came accompanied by her parents, her children and al her relations.	30 Ela veio, acompanhada de seus pais, seus filhos e de todos os seus parentes.
31 Susanna was very graceful and beautiful to look at;	31 Ora Susana era de traços delicados e de uma formosura extraordinária.
32 she was veiled, so the wretches made her unveil in order to feast their eyes on her beauty.	32 Então aqueles malvados mandaram-lhe descobrir o rosto, porque estava velada, para se fartarem com a vista da sua beleza.
33 Al her own people were weeping, and so were al the others who saw her.	33 Entretanto choravam os seus é todos os que a conheciam.
34 The two elders stood up, with al the people round them, and laid their hands on her head.	34 Aqueles dois velhos, levantando-se no meio do povo, puseram as suas mãos sobre a cabeça de Susana.
35 Tearful y she turned her eyes to Heaven, her heart confident in God.	35 Ela, chorando, levantou os olhos ao céu, porque o seu coração tinha uma firme confiança no Senhor.
36 The elders then spoke, 'While we were walking by ourselves in the garden, this woman arrived withtwo maids. She shut the garden door and then dismissed the servants.	36 Os velhos disseram: Quando passeávamos sós na jardim, entrou esta mulher com duas donzelas; fechou as portas do jardim e despediu as donzelas.
37 A young man, who had been hiding, went over to her and they lay together.	37 Então um jovem, que estava escondido, foi ao seu encontro e pecou com ela.
38 From the end of the garden where we were, we saw this crime taking place and hurried towardsthem.	38 Nós, que estávamos a um canto do jardim, vendo esta maldade, corremos para eles e vimo-los ambos neste acto.
39 Though we saw them together, we were unable to catch the man: he was too strong for us; heopened the door and took to his heels.	39 Não pudemos apanhar o jovem, porque era mais forte do que nós, o qual, tendo aberto a porta, fugiu.
40 We did, however, catch this woman and ask her who the young man was.	40 A ela conseguimos apanhá-la e perguntámos-Ihe que jovem era aquele, mas não no-lo quis dizer. Deste sucesso somos nós testemunhas.
41 She refused to tel us. That is our evidence.' Since they were elders of the people and judges, theassembly accepted their word: Susanna was condemned to death.	41 Todo o ajuntamento lhes deu crédito, como a velhos e a juízes do povo, e ela foi condenada à morte.
42 She cried out as loud as she could, 'Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before ithappens;	42 Então Susana exclamou em alta voz: Deus eterno, que penetras as coisas escondidas, que conheces todas as coisas ainda antes que aconteçam,
43 you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now I must die, innocent as I am ofeverything their malice has invented against me!'	43 tu sabes que eles levantaram contra mim um falso testemunho; e eis que morro, sem ter feito nada do que inventaram criminosamente contra mim.
44 The Lord heard her cry	44 O Senhor ouviu a sua oração.
45 and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy called Daniel	45 Quando a conduziam à morte, suscitou o Senhor o santo espírito (da profecia) num jovem chamado Daniel,
46 who began to shout, 'I am innocent of this woman's death!'	46 o qual gritou em alta voz: Estou inocente do sangue desta mulher.
47 At this al the people turned to him and asked, 'What do you mean by that?'	47 Voltou-se para ele todo o povo e disse-lhe: Que significa essa palavra, que acabas de proferir?
48 Standing in the middle of the crowd, he replied, 'Are you so stupid, children of Israel, as to condemna daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth?	48 Ele, pondo-se em pé no meio de todos, disse: É possível, filhos de Israel, que sejais vós tão insensatos que, sem o devido exame e conhecimento da verdade, tenhais condenado uma filha de Israel?
49 Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.'	49 Julgai-a de novo, porque eles disseram um falso testemunho contra ela.
50 Al the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, 'Come and sit with us and tell us what youmean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.'	50 Voltou, pois, o povo, apressadamente, e os velhos disseram a Daniel: Vem, assenta-te no meio de nós e esclarece-nos, visto que Deus te deu a honra da velhice,
51 Daniel said, 'Keep the men wel apart from each other, for I want to question them.'	51 Daniel disse ao povo: Separai-os longe um do outro, e eu os julgarei.
52 When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. 'You have grown old inwickedness,' he said, 'and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you,	52 Tendo sido separados, chamou Daniel um deles e disse-lhe: Homem inveterado no mal, os pecados que cometias noutro tempo, voltam agora sobre ti,
53 you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of the guilty,although the Lord has said, "You must not put the innocent and upright to death."	53 que pronunciavas juízos injustos, que oprimias os Inocentes e absolvias os culpados, apesar de o Senhor ter dito: Não farás morrer o inocente e o justo.
54 Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tel me what sort of tree you saw them lying under.' Hereplied, 'Under an acacia tree.'	54 Ora bem! Se a viste (pecar), dize: Debaixo de que árvore os viste juntos? Ele respondeu: Debaixo dum lentisco.
55 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received fromhim your sentence and wil cut you in half.'	55 Daniel disse-lhe: Verdadeiramente mentiste contra a tua cabeça, porque eis que o anjo de Deus, tendo recebido dele (O poder de executar) a sentença (proferida contra ti), te partirá pelo meio.
56 He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, 'Son of Canaan, not ofJudah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray!	56 Tendo feito retirar este, mandou que viesse o outro, e disse-lhe: Raça de Canaan, e não de Judá, a formosura seduziu-te, e a concupiscência perverteu-te o coração.
57 This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel, and they have been too frightenedto resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness!	57 Era assim que vós fazíeis às filhas de Israel, e elas, com medo, condescendiam convosco; porém esta filha de Judá não suportou a vossa iniquidade.
58 Now then, tel me what sort of tree you surprised them under.' He replied, 'Under an aspen tree.'	58 Dize-me, pois, agora: Debaixo de que árvore os surpreendeste juntos? Ele respondeu: Debaixo dum carvalho.
59 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting with a sword torend you in half, and destroy the pair of you.'	59 Daniel disse-lhe: Verdadeiramente também tu mentiste contra a tua cabeça, porque o anjo do Senhor está esperando, com a espada na mão, para te cortar pelo meio, para te matar.
60 Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the Saviour of those who trust in him.	60 Imediatamente toda a assembleia gritou em alta voz, bem-dizendo a Deus; que salva os que esperam nele.
61 And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their ownmouths.	61 Então levantaram-se contra os dois velhos, os quais Daniel havia convencido por sua própria boca de terem dado um testemunho falso, e fizeram-lhes sofrer o mesmo mal que eles tinham intentado contra o seu próximo,
62 As the Law of Moses prescribes, they were given the same punishment as they had schemed toinflict on their neighbour. They were put to death. And thus, that day, an innocent life was saved.	62 para cumprirem com a lei de Moisés: mataram-nos, sendo salvo o sangue inocente naquele dia.
63 Hilkiah and his wife gave thanks to God for their daughter Susanna, and so did her husband Joakimand all his relations, because she had been acquitted of anything dishonourable.	63 Então Helcias e sua mulher louvaram a Deus por (ter salvado) Susana, sua filha, com Joaquim, seu marido, e com todos os parentes por se não ter achado nela coisa que ofendesse a honestidade.
64 From that day onwards, Daniel's reputation stood high with the people.	64 E Daniel, desde aquele dia em diante, tornou-se grande diante do povo.
	65 O rei Astiages foi juntar-se a seu pais (no sepulcro), e Ciro, o Persa, sucedeu-lhe no reino.
