Daniel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim.	1 Il y avait un homme du nom de Yoakim qui vivait à Babylone.
2 He was married to a woman called Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, a woman of great beauty; and shewas God-fearing, for	2 Il avait épousé une femme nommée Suzanne, fille de Helquias; elle était très belle et craignait Dieu
3 her parents were worthy people and had instructed their daughter in the Law of Moses.	3 car ses parents étaient excellents et ils avaient élevé leur fille selon la loi de Moïse.
4 Joakim was a very rich man and had a garden by his house; he used to be visited by a considerablenumber of the Jews, since he was held in greater respect than any other man.	4 Yoakim était très riche, il avait un jardin qui touchait sa maison; les Juifs venaient nombreux chez lui car il était le plus respecté de tous.
5 Two elderly men had been selected from the people, that year, to act as judges. Of such the Lord hadsaid, 'Wickedness has come to Babylon through the elders and judges posing as guides to the people.'	5 Cette année-là on avait choisi comme juges deux anciens du peuple, de ceux pour lesquels le Seigneur a dit: “L’injustice s’est manifestée à Babylone avec des anciens, des juges qui voulaient passer pour chefs du peuple.”
6 These men were often at Joakim's house, and all who were engaged in litigation used to come tothem.	6 Ces hommes fréquentaient la maison de Yoakim et tous ceux qui avaient un procès venaient les trouver.
7 At midday, when the people had gone away, Susanna would take a walk in her husband's garden.	7 Lorsque le peuple se retirait vers le milieu du jour, Suzanne allait au jardin de son mari pour s’y promener.
8 The two elders, who used to watch her every day as she came in to take her walk, gradual y began todesire her.	8 Les deux anciens qui la voyaient chaque jour entrer et se promener, commencèrent à la désirer;
9 They threw reason aside, making no effort to turn their eyes to Heaven, and forgetting the demands ofvirtue.	9 ils en perdirent la tête, ils cessèrent de regarder vers le Ciel et oublièrent ses justes jugements.
10 Both were inflamed by passion for her, but they hid their desire from each other,	10 Ils étaient tous les deux dévorés par la même passion, mais ils se le cachaient l’un à l’autre;
11 for they were ashamed to admit the longing to sleep with her,	11 ils avaient honte d’avouer le désir qui les pressait de coucher avec elle,
12 but they made sure of watching her every day.	12 mais chaque jour ils faisaient tout pour l’apercevoir.
13 One day, having parted with the words, 'Let us go home, then, it is time for the midday meal,' theywent off in different directions,	13 Ils se dirent un jour l’un à l’autre: “Rentrons chez nous, c’est l’heure du déjeuner.” Ils sortent, ils se séparent,
14 only to retrace their steps and find themselves face to face again. Obliged then to explain, theyadmitted their desire and agreed to look for an opportunity of surprising her alone.	14 et puis ils font demi-tour et ils se retrouvent au même endroit. Ils s’interrogent l’un l’autre sur la raison de ce retour et ils finissent par s’avouer leur désir. Alors ils commencent à chercher ensemble une occasion de la trouver seule.
15 So they waited for a favourable moment; and one day Susanna came as usual, accompanied only bytwo young maidservants. The day was hot and she wanted to bathe in the garden.	15 Tandis qu’ils étaient à l’affût d’une occasion favorable, Suzanne entra dans le jardin comme elle avait fait jusque là, accompagnée seulement de deux servantes. Il faisait chaud et elle voulut se baigner.
16 There was no one about except the two elders, spying on her from their hiding place.	16 Il n’y avait personne dans le jardin en dehors des deux anciens qui s’étaient cachés et qui la guettaient.
17 She said to the servants, 'Bring me some oil and balsam and shut the garden door while I bathe.'	17 Suzanne dit aux jeunes filles: “Apportez-moi donc de l’huile et des parfums et fermez les portes du jardin pour que je puisse me baigner.”
18 They did as they were told, shutting the garden door and going back to the house by a side entranceto fetch what she had asked for; they knew nothing about the elders, for they had concealed themselves.	18 Elles firent comme Suzanne avait dit; elles fermèrent les portes du jardin et sortirent par la porte de derrière pour rapporter ce qu’elle avait demandé; elle ne savait pas que les anciens étaient là cachés.
19 Hardly were the maids gone than the two elders sprang up and rushed upon her.	19 Dès que les servantes furent sorties, les deux anciens se levèrent et coururent vers Suzanne.
20 'Look,' they said, 'the garden door is shut, no one can see us. We want to have you, so give in andlet us!	20 Ils lui dirent: “Les portes du jardin sont maintenant fermées, personne ne nous voit et nous sommes fous de désir pour toi: accepte donc de te donner à nous.
21 Refuse, and we shal both give evidence that a young man was with you and that this was why yousent your maids away.'	21 Sinon, nous porterons témoignage contre toi, nous dirons qu’un jeune homme était avec toi et que c’est pour cela que tu as renvoyé les jeunes filles.”
22 Susanna sighed. 'I am trapped,' she said, 'whatever I do. If I agree, it means death for me; if I resist, Icannot get away from you.	22 Suzanne soupira et dit: “De toutes parts pour moi c’est l’angoisse: ce serait pour moi la mort que de faire une telle chose, et si je ne le fais pas, je n’échapperai pas à vos mains.
23 But I prefer to fal innocent into your power than to sin in the eyes of the Lord.'	23 Mais il vaut mieux pour moi tomber innocente entre vos mains, que de pécher sous le regard du Seigneur.”
24 She then cried out as loud as she could. The two elders began shouting too, putting the blame onher,	24 Alors Suzanne cria d’une voix forte, mais les deux anciens crièrent aussi contre elle
25 and one of them ran to open the garden door.	25 et l’un d’entre eux courut ouvrir les portes du jardin.
26 The household, hearing the shouting in the garden, rushed out by the side entrance to see what hadhappened to her.	26 En entendant les cris dans le jardin, les serviteurs de la maison arrivèrent en courant par la porte de derrière pour voir ce qui était arrivé.
27 Once the elders had told their story, the servants were thoroughly taken aback, since nothing of thissort had ever been said of Susanna.	27 Les anciens s’expliquèrent, et les serviteurs furent couverts de confusion car on n’avait jamais entendu dire quelque chose de semblable à propos de Suzanne.
28 Next day a meeting was held at the house of her husband Joakim. The two elders arrived, ful of theirwicked plea against Susanna, to have her put to death.	28 Le lendemain, lorsque le peuple se rassembla chez Yoakim, le mari de Suzanne, les deux anciens arrivèrent le cœur rempli de pensées criminelles contre Suzanne; ils étaient décidés à la faire mourir.
29 They addressed the company, 'Summon Susanna daughter of Hilkiah and wife of Joakim.' She wassent for,	29 Devant tout le peuple ils dirent: “Allez chercher Suzanne, fille de Helquias, la femme de Yoakim.” Aussitôt on alla la chercher.
30 and came accompanied by her parents, her children and al her relations.	30 Elle arriva avec ses parents, ses enfants et sa famille.
31 Susanna was very graceful and beautiful to look at;	31 Suzanne avait un très beau visage: elle était très belle.
32 she was veiled, so the wretches made her unveil in order to feast their eyes on her beauty.	32 Comme elle était voilée, ces misérables lui firent enlever son voile pour se rassasier encore de sa beauté.
33 Al her own people were weeping, and so were al the others who saw her.	33 Tous ses proches pleuraient, ainsi que tous ceux qui la voyaient.
34 The two elders stood up, with al the people round them, and laid their hands on her head.	34 Alors les deux vieillards se levèrent au milieu de l’assemblée et posèrent leurs mains sur sa tête.
35 Tearful y she turned her eyes to Heaven, her heart confident in God.	35 Elle pleurait: le visage tourné vers le ciel, elle mettait sa confiance en Dieu.
36 The elders then spoke, 'While we were walking by ourselves in the garden, this woman arrived withtwo maids. She shut the garden door and then dismissed the servants.	36 Les vieillards prirent la parole: “Tandis que nous nous promenions seuls dans le jardin, cette femme est entrée avec deux servantes. Elle a fermé les portes du jardin, puis elle a renvoyé les jeunes filles.
37 A young man, who had been hiding, went over to her and they lay together.	37 Alors un jeune homme qui était caché s’est approché d’elle et a péché avec elle.
38 From the end of the garden where we were, we saw this crime taking place and hurried towardsthem.	38 Nous étions dans un coin du jardin et, quand nous avons vu ce scandale, nous nous sommes précipités vers eux
39 Though we saw them together, we were unable to catch the man: he was too strong for us; heopened the door and took to his heels.	39 et nous les avons vu coucher ensemble. Mais nous n’avons pas pu saisir le jeune homme parce qu’il était plus fort que nous. Après avoir ouvert les portes, il a pris la fuite.
40 We did, however, catch this woman and ask her who the young man was.	40 Mais elle, nous l’avons prise et nous lui avons demandé qui était ce jeune homme,
41 She refused to tel us. That is our evidence.' Since they were elders of the people and judges, theassembly accepted their word: Susanna was condemned to death.	41 et elle n’a pas voulu nous le dire. Nous sommes témoins de tout cela.” Comme ils étaient anciens et juges du peuple, l’assemblée crut à leurs paroles et ils la condamnèrent à mort.
42 She cried out as loud as she could, 'Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before ithappens;	42 Alors Suzanne cria d’une voix forte: “Dieu éternel, toi qui connais les secrets et qui sais tout avant que les choses n’arrivent,
43 you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now I must die, innocent as I am ofeverything their malice has invented against me!'	43 tu sais qu’ils ont porté contre moi un faux témoignage et que maintenant je meurs innocente de tout ce que ces misérables ont imaginé contre moi!”
44 The Lord heard her cry	44 Le Seigneur entendit la voix de Suzanne.
45 and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy called Daniel	45 Pendant qu’on la conduisait au supplice, Dieu éveilla l’esprit saint d’un jeune garçon nommé Daniel,
46 who began to shout, 'I am innocent of this woman's death!'	46 et d’une voix forte il cria: “Je suis innocent du sang de cette femme!”
47 At this al the people turned to him and asked, 'What do you mean by that?'	47 Tout le monde se retourna vers lui et lui dit: “Qu’est-ce que tu nous dis là?”
48 Standing in the middle of the crowd, he replied, 'Are you so stupid, children of Israel, as to condemna daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth?	48 Et lui, se tenant au milieu de tous, leur dit: “Êtes-vous donc tellement stupides, fils d’Israël? Sans avoir jugé, sans connaître la vérité, vous condamnez une fille d’Israël!
49 Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.'	49 Retournez au tribunal, car ils ont porté contre elle un faux témoignage.”
50 Al the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, 'Come and sit with us and tell us what youmean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.'	50 Tout le monde s’empressa de retourner au tribunal et les anciens dirent à Daniel: “Viens, assieds-toi au milieu de nous et dis-nous ta pensée, car Dieu t’a donné la sagesse des anciens.”
51 Daniel said, 'Keep the men wel apart from each other, for I want to question them.'	51 Daniel leur dit: “Séparez-les l’un de l’autre, et moi je vais les juger.”
52 When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. 'You have grown old inwickedness,' he said, 'and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you,	52 Lorsqu’ils furent séparés l’un de l’autre, Daniel appela le premier et lui dit: “Tu as vieilli dans le mal, et maintenant les péchés de ta vie passée retombent sur toi.
53 you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of the guilty,although the Lord has said, "You must not put the innocent and upright to death."	53 Tu rendais des jugements injustes, tu condamnais les innocents et tu renvoyais libres les coupables, alors que le Seigneur a dit: Tu ne feras pas mourir l’innocent et le juste.
54 Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tel me what sort of tree you saw them lying under.' Hereplied, 'Under an acacia tree.'	54 Eh bien, puisque tu l’as vue, dis-nous sous quel arbre tu les as vus coucher ensemble.” Il répondit: “Sous un acacia.”
55 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received fromhim your sentence and wil cut you in half.'	55 Daniel lui dit: “Ton mensonge retombe sur ta propre tête et Dieu a déjà donné l’ordre à son ange de te fendre par le milieu.”
56 He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, 'Son of Canaan, not ofJudah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray!	56 Il le renvoya et ordonna de faire venir le second; il lui dit: “Race de Canaan et non de Juda! la beauté t’a fait perdre la tête et le désir a perverti ton cœur.
57 This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel, and they have been too frightenedto resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness!	57 Voilà comment vous agissiez avec les filles d’Israël, et par crainte elles se donnaient à vous, mais une fille de Juda n’a pas supporté votre misérable conduite.
58 Now then, tel me what sort of tree you surprised them under.' He replied, 'Under an aspen tree.'	58 Eh bien, dis-moi donc sous quel arbre tu les as surpris en train de coucher ensemble.” Il répondit: “Sous un chêne.”
59 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting with a sword torend you in half, and destroy the pair of you.'	59 Daniel lui dit: “Ton mensonge à toi aussi retombe sur ta tête, l’ange de Dieu est là qui t’attend l’épée à la main pour te couper par le milieu et te faire périr.”
60 Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the Saviour of those who trust in him.	60 Alors toute l’assemblée cria d’une voix forte: ils bénirent Dieu parce qu’il sauve ceux qui espèrent en lui.
61 And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their ownmouths.	61 Puis ils se retournèrent contre les deux anciens que Daniel avait convaincus de faux témoignage par leurs propres paroles; on leur infligea le châtiment que, dans leur méchanceté, ils avaient projeté contre leur prochain.
62 As the Law of Moses prescribes, they were given the same punishment as they had schemed toinflict on their neighbour. They were put to death. And thus, that day, an innocent life was saved.	62 On appliqua la loi de Moïse: ils furent mis à mort et, ce jour-là, le sang innocent fut sauvé.
63 Hilkiah and his wife gave thanks to God for their daughter Susanna, and so did her husband Joakimand all his relations, because she had been acquitted of anything dishonourable.	63 Helquias et sa femme louèrent Dieu pour leur fille Suzanne, et de même Yoakim, son mari, et toute sa famille, car on n’avait rien trouvé à lui reprocher.
64 From that day onwards, Daniel's reputation stood high with the people.	64 À partir de ce jour-là et dans la suite, le peuple respecta Daniel.
