Daniel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim.	1 A Babilonia viveva un uomo che si chiamava Ioakìm.
2 He was married to a woman called Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, a woman of great beauty; and shewas God-fearing, for	2 Egli sposò una donna di nome Susanna, figlia di Chelkìa, molto bella e timorata del Signore.
3 her parents were worthy people and had instructed their daughter in the Law of Moses.	3 I suoi genitori erano giusti e avevano educato la loro figlia secondo la legge di Mosè.
4 Joakim was a very rich man and had a garden by his house; he used to be visited by a considerablenumber of the Jews, since he was held in greater respect than any other man.	4 Ioakìm era molto ricco e possedeva un giardino attiguo alla sua casa; presso di lui si riunivano i Giudei, perché era il più ragguardevole di tutti.
5 Two elderly men had been selected from the people, that year, to act as judges. Of such the Lord hadsaid, 'Wickedness has come to Babylon through the elders and judges posing as guides to the people.'	5 In quell'anno erano stati designati giudici due anziani del popolo: erano di quelli di cui il Signore ha detto: "E' uscita l'empietà da Babilonia da parte dei giudici anziani, che solo all'apparenza governano il popolo".
6 These men were often at Joakim's house, and all who were engaged in litigation used to come tothem.	6 Essi frequentavano la casa di Ioakìm e tutti coloro che avevano qualche causa venivano da loro.
7 At midday, when the people had gone away, Susanna would take a walk in her husband's garden.	7 Quando poi il popolo sul mezzogiorno si ritirava, Susanna usciva per passeggiare nel giardino di suo marito.
8 The two elders, who used to watch her every day as she came in to take her walk, gradual y began todesire her.	8 I due anziani la vedevano ogni giorno quando usciva a passeggiare e furono presi dalla passione per lei.
9 They threw reason aside, making no effort to turn their eyes to Heaven, and forgetting the demands ofvirtue.	9 Essi persero la testa e abbassarono gli occhi in modo da non veder più il cielo e da non ricordarsi più dei suoi giusti giudizi.
10 Both were inflamed by passion for her, but they hid their desire from each other,	10 Ambedue erano dunque presi di lei, ma non si comunicavano l'un l'altro il proprio affanno,
11 for they were ashamed to admit the longing to sleep with her,	11 perché avevano vergogna a manifestare il loro desiderio di accoppiarsi con lei,
12 but they made sure of watching her every day.	12 ma ogni giorno spiavano libidinosamente l'occasione di vederla.
13 One day, having parted with the words, 'Let us go home, then, it is time for the midday meal,' theywent off in different directions,	13 Una volta dissero l'un l'altro: "Andiamo a casa, che è ora del pranzo!". Ed usciti, si separarono.
14 only to retrace their steps and find themselves face to face again. Obliged then to explain, theyadmitted their desire and agreed to look for an opportunity of surprising her alone.	14 Ma tornati sui loro passi, si ritrovarono allo stesso posto e cercando di spiegarsene il motivo confessarono la propria passione. Allora di comune accordo fissarono il momento quando avrebbero potuto trovarla sola.
15 So they waited for a favourable moment; and one day Susanna came as usual, accompanied only bytwo young maidservants. The day was hot and she wanted to bathe in the garden.	15 Or avvenne che, mentre attendevano un giorno opportuno, Susanna entrò come al solito, con due sole fanciulle, desiderando fare il bagno nel giardino, perché faceva caldo.
16 There was no one about except the two elders, spying on her from their hiding place.	16 Non c'era nessuno, all'infuori dei due anziani, che erano nascosti e la guardavano.
17 She said to the servants, 'Bring me some oil and balsam and shut the garden door while I bathe.'	17 Ella disse alle due fanciulle: "Portatemi l'olio e l'unguento e chiudete le porte del giardino, perché possa fare il bagno".
18 They did as they were told, shutting the garden door and going back to the house by a side entranceto fetch what she had asked for; they knew nothing about the elders, for they had concealed themselves.	18 Esse fecero come aveva ordinato: chiusero per bene le porte del giardino e uscirono per una delle porte secondarie per portare quanto era stato loro chiesto; non si accorsero degli anziani, perché erano nascosti.
19 Hardly were the maids gone than the two elders sprang up and rushed upon her.	19 Ora, quando le fanciulle furono partite, i due vecchi sbucarono fuori, corsero da lei
20 'Look,' they said, 'the garden door is shut, no one can see us. We want to have you, so give in andlet us!	20 e dissero: "Ecco, le porte del giardino sono chiuse, nessuno ci vede e noi ti desideriamo. Acconsenti dunque e datti a noi.
21 Refuse, and we shal both give evidence that a young man was with you and that this was why yousent your maids away.'	21 Altrimenti noi testimonieremo contro di te che con te c'era un giovane e che per questo hai fatto uscire le fanciulle".
22 Susanna sighed. 'I am trapped,' she said, 'whatever I do. If I agree, it means death for me; if I resist, Icannot get away from you.	22 Susanna sospirò e disse: "Per me non c'è scampo da nessuna parte! Infatti, se compio ciò, per me c'è la morte, e se non lo compio, non sfuggirò dalle vostre mani!
23 But I prefer to fal innocent into your power than to sin in the eyes of the Lord.'	23 Ma per me è preferibile non fare nulla di ciò e cadere nelle vostre mani, piuttosto che peccare davanti al Signore!".
24 She then cried out as loud as she could. The two elders began shouting too, putting the blame onher,	24 Susanna gridò a voce alta, ma gridarono anche i due vecchi contro di lei;
25 and one of them ran to open the garden door.	25 poi uno andò di corsa ad aprire le porte del giardino.
26 The household, hearing the shouting in the garden, rushed out by the side entrance to see what hadhappened to her.	26 Ora, quando i familiari udirono il grido nel giardino, si precipitarono per la porta laterale per vedere cosa le fosse successo.
27 Once the elders had told their story, the servants were thoroughly taken aback, since nothing of thissort had ever been said of Susanna.	27 Ma quando i vecchi ebbero raccontato la loro storia, i familiari rimasero molto addolorati, perché mai era stata raccontata una cosa del genere riguardo a Susanna.
28 Next day a meeting was held at the house of her husband Joakim. The two elders arrived, ful of theirwicked plea against Susanna, to have her put to death.	28 Il giorno seguente, quando il popolo si radunò in casa di suo marito Ioakìm, vennero anche i due vecchi, fermi nell'iniquo proposito contro Susanna per mandarla a morte.
29 They addressed the company, 'Summon Susanna daughter of Hilkiah and wife of Joakim.' She wassent for,	29 Essi dissero alla presenza del popolo: "Mandate a chiamare Susanna, figlia di Chelkìa, moglie di Ioakìm!". Andarono.
30 and came accompanied by her parents, her children and al her relations.	30 Ella venne accompagnata dai genitori, dai suoi figli e da tutti i suoi parenti.
31 Susanna was very graceful and beautiful to look at;	31 Susanna era molto graziosa e bella d'aspetto.
32 she was veiled, so the wretches made her unveil in order to feast their eyes on her beauty.	32 Ma quei malvagi ordinarono che si scoprisse, perché portava il velo, per potersi saziare della sua bellezza.
33 Al her own people were weeping, and so were al the others who saw her.	33 I suoi piangevano, come tutti coloro che la vedevano.
34 The two elders stood up, with al the people round them, and laid their hands on her head.	34 I due vecchi, alzatisi in mezzo al popolo, posero le mani sopra la sua testa,
35 Tearful y she turned her eyes to Heaven, her heart confident in God.	35 mentre ella, piangendo, volse lo sguardo verso il cielo, poiché il suo cuore aveva fiducia nel Signore.
36 The elders then spoke, 'While we were walking by ourselves in the garden, this woman arrived withtwo maids. She shut the garden door and then dismissed the servants.	36 I vecchi dissero: "Mentre passeggiavamo soli nel giardino, costei entrò con due ancelle, poi chiuse le porte, dopo aver fatto uscire le fanciulle.
37 A young man, who had been hiding, went over to her and they lay together.	37 Allora si avvicinò a lei un giovane, che era nascosto e si adagiò accanto a lei.
38 From the end of the garden where we were, we saw this crime taking place and hurried towardsthem.	38 Noi, che ci trovavamo in un angolo del giardino, vista l'empietà, corremmo verso di loro,
39 Though we saw them together, we were unable to catch the man: he was too strong for us; heopened the door and took to his heels.	39 li vedemmo stare insieme, ma quel tale non potemmo prenderlo, perché era più forte di noi e, avendo aperto le porte, se la dette a gambe;
40 We did, however, catch this woman and ask her who the young man was.	40 costei invece la prendemmo e chiedemmo chi fosse il giovane,
41 She refused to tel us. That is our evidence.' Since they were elders of the people and judges, theassembly accepted their word: Susanna was condemned to death.	41 ma non volle dircelo. Di questo noi siamo testimoni!". L'assemblea credette loro, perché erano anziani del popolo e giudici, e la condannarono a morte.
42 She cried out as loud as she could, 'Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before ithappens;	42 Ma Susanna gridò a gran voce e disse: "Dio eterno, che conosci quello che è nascosto e sai tutte le cose prima che avvengano,
43 you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now I must die, innocent as I am ofeverything their malice has invented against me!'	43 tu sai che costoro hanno testimoniato il falso contro di me, ed ecco io muoio senza aver fatto niente di ciò che essi hanno detto di male contro di me!".
44 The Lord heard her cry	44 Il Signore intese la sua voce.
45 and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy called Daniel	45 E mentre costei veniva condotta via per essere uccisa, Dio suscitò il santo spirito di un giovanetto, di nome Daniele,
46 who began to shout, 'I am innocent of this woman's death!'	46 che a gran voce gridò: "Io sono innocente del sangue di costei!".
47 At this al the people turned to him and asked, 'What do you mean by that?'	47 Allora tutti si voltarono verso di lui e domandarono: "Che è questo discorso che tu hai fatto?".
48 Standing in the middle of the crowd, he replied, 'Are you so stupid, children of Israel, as to condemna daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth?	48 Egli, alzatosi in mezzo ad essi, disse: "Siete così stolti, figli d'Israele? Senza aver istruito il processo e senza aver conosciuto la verità, avete condannato una figlia d'Israele!
49 Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.'	49 Tornate al luogo del giudizio! Essi infatti hanno testimoniato il falso contro costei!".
50 Al the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, 'Come and sit with us and tell us what youmean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.'	50 Allora tutto il popolo in fretta tornò indietro. E gli anziani gli dissero: "Vieni, siediti in mezzo a noi e parlaci pure, dal momento che Dio ti ha concesso ciò che è proprio di un anziano!".
51 Daniel said, 'Keep the men wel apart from each other, for I want to question them.'	51 Daniele disse loro: "Teneteli molto distanti l'uno dall'altro e io li interrogherò!".
52 When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. 'You have grown old inwickedness,' he said, 'and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you,	52 Quando furono separati l'uno dall'altro, ne chiamò uno e gli disse: "O uomo invecchiato nel male, ora sono venuti alla luce i peccati che hai commesso prima,
53 you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of the guilty,although the Lord has said, "You must not put the innocent and upright to death."	53 eseguendo giudizi iniqui, condannando gli innocenti e lasciando andare i colpevoli, mentre Dio ha comandato: "Non uccidere l'innocente e il giusto!".
54 Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tel me what sort of tree you saw them lying under.' Hereplied, 'Under an acacia tree.'	54 Or dunque, se hai visto costei, di': sotto quale albero li hai visti discorrere insieme?". Quello rispose: "Sotto un'acacia!".
55 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received fromhim your sentence and wil cut you in half.'	55 Daniele soggiunse: "Hai proprio mentito contro la tua stessa testa! Infatti già l'angelo di Dio, ricevuto l'ordine da Dio, ti dividerà nel mezzo!".
56 He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, 'Son of Canaan, not ofJudah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray!	56 Dopo averlo rimandato indietro, ordinò di far venire l'altro. Gli disse: "Stirpe di Canaan e non di Giuda, la bellezza ti ha traviato e la passione ha pervertito il tuo cuore.
57 This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel, and they have been too frightenedto resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness!	57 Così facevate alle figlie d'Israele ed esse per paura avevano rapporti con voi. Ma una figlia di Giuda non ha subìto la vostra iniquità.
58 Now then, tel me what sort of tree you surprised them under.' He replied, 'Under an aspen tree.'	58 Or dunque, dimmi: sotto quale albero li hai sorpresi a discorrere insieme?". Egli rispose: "Sotto un pruno!".
59 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting with a sword torend you in half, and destroy the pair of you.'	59 Daniele soggiunse: "Anche tu hai mentito contro la tua stessa testa! L'angelo di Dio infatti sta aspettando, tenendo in mano la spada, per spaccarti nel mezzo, per sterminarti!".
60 Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the Saviour of those who trust in him.	60 Allora tutta l'assemblea alzò un grido e benedisse Dio che salva coloro che confidano in lui.
61 And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their ownmouths.	61 Poi si rivolsero verso i due vecchi, perché Daniele li aveva convinti dalla loro stessa bocca di aver testimoniato il falso, e fecero loro quello che essi avevano ordinato contro il prossimo.
62 As the Law of Moses prescribes, they were given the same punishment as they had schemed toinflict on their neighbour. They were put to death. And thus, that day, an innocent life was saved.	62 Per eseguire la legge di Mosè li uccisero e così in quel giorno fu salvato sangue innocente.
63 Hilkiah and his wife gave thanks to God for their daughter Susanna, and so did her husband Joakimand all his relations, because she had been acquitted of anything dishonourable.	63 Chelkìa e sua moglie lodarono Dio per la loro figlia Susanna insieme a Ioakìm suo sposo e a tutti i congiunti, perché non si era trovato in lei niente d'indegno.
64 From that day onwards, Daniel's reputation stood high with the people.	64 Da quel giorno in poi Daniele diventò grande davanti al popolo.
