Daniel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim.	1 - C'era un uomo domiciliato in Babilonia che aveva nome Joachim.
2 He was married to a woman called Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, a woman of great beauty; and shewas God-fearing, for	2 Si era ammogliato a una donna di nome Susanna, figlia di Elcia, molto bella e piena di timor di Dio;
3 her parents were worthy people and had instructed their daughter in the Law of Moses.	3 perchè i genitori suoi, essendo giusti, avevano educata la loro figliuola secondo la legge di Mosè.
4 Joakim was a very rich man and had a garden by his house; he used to be visited by a considerablenumber of the Jews, since he was held in greater respect than any other man.	4 Joachim poi era molto ricco, e possedeva un giardino contiguo a casa sua e i giudei, essendo egli il più ragguardevole di tutti, si recavano in gran numero da lui.
5 Two elderly men had been selected from the people, that year, to act as judges. Of such the Lord hadsaid, 'Wickedness has come to Babylon through the elders and judges posing as guides to the people.'	5 Avevano in quell'anno messi a far da giudici due vecchi del popolo; di quelli su cui il Signore aveva parlato: «Che l'iniquità è uscita da Babilonia dai giudici anziani che si credeva governassero il popolo».
6 These men were often at Joakim's house, and all who were engaged in litigation used to come tothem.	6 Costoro frequentavano la casa di Joachim e ad essi traevano tutti quelli che avevano cose da decidere.
7 At midday, when the people had gone away, Susanna would take a walk in her husband's garden.	7 E quando il popolo, verso mezzogiorno, si era ritirato, Susanna entrava nel giardino di suo marito e passeggiava.
8 The two elders, who used to watch her every day as she came in to take her walk, gradual y began todesire her.	8 I due vecchi l'avevano veduta tutti i giorni entrare e passeggiare, e concepirono della passione per lei.
9 They threw reason aside, making no effort to turn their eyes to Heaven, and forgetting the demands ofvirtue.	9 Si lasciarono travolgere il giudizio, e torsero gli occhi in basso invece di mirare il cielo e di rammentare i giusti giudizi.
10 Both were inflamed by passion for her, but they hid their desire from each other,	10 Erano tutti e due toccati dall'amore di lei, ma non osavano palesarsi l'un l'altro le proprie pene,
11 for they were ashamed to admit the longing to sleep with her,	11 perchè si vergognavano di manifestare la loro passione, pur desiderosi di trovarsi con lei.
12 but they made sure of watching her every day.	12 Così solleciti un giorno più che l'altro, stavano in osservazione per vederla. Finalmente l'uno disse all'altro:
13 One day, having parted with the words, 'Let us go home, then, it is time for the midday meal,' theywent off in different directions,	13 «Andiamo a casa che è l'ora del pranzo». Uscirono e si separarono.
14 only to retrace their steps and find themselves face to face again. Obliged then to explain, theyadmitted their desire and agreed to look for an opportunity of surprising her alone.	14 Ma entrambi rifecero i loro passi e si ritrovarono insieme e si domandarono a vicenda il perchè, e finirono per confessare la propria passione; allora di concerto stabilirono il tempo in cui potessero trovarla sola.
15 So they waited for a favourable moment; and one day Susanna came as usual, accompanied only bytwo young maidservants. The day was hot and she wanted to bathe in the garden.	15 Or avvenne, mentre stavano aspettando il giorno propizio, che essa, come gli altri giorni passati, entrò anche questa volta con due sole fanciulle e si volle bagnare nell'interno del giardino, perchè faceva molto caldo.
16 There was no one about except the two elders, spying on her from their hiding place.	16 Non vi era anima viva fuori dei due vecchi che nascostisi, la stavano contemplando.
17 She said to the servants, 'Bring me some oil and balsam and shut the garden door while I bathe.'	17 Disse alle fanciulle: «Recatemi poi l'unguento e i profumi e chiudete le porte del giardino che voglio bagnarmi».
18 They did as they were told, shutting the garden door and going back to the house by a side entranceto fetch what she had asked for; they knew nothing about the elders, for they had concealed themselves.	18 Come aveva ordinato, così fecero: chiusero le porte del giardino, indi uscirono dalla porta interna per recarle quello che aveva chiesto; e non sapevano che i due vecchi erano dentro nascosti.
19 Hardly were the maids gone than the two elders sprang up and rushed upon her.	19 Appena che le fanciulle furono uscite, i due vecchi si alzarono e corsero a lei e le dissero:
20 'Look,' they said, 'the garden door is shut, no one can see us. We want to have you, so give in andlet us!	20 «Le porte del giardino eccole chiuse, nessuno ci vedrà; noi siamo presi dalla passione per te, cedi alle nostre voglie e ti concedi a noi.
21 Refuse, and we shal both give evidence that a young man was with you and that this was why yousent your maids away.'	21 Che se non vuoi, faremo testimonianza contro di te, che un giovane era teco e che hai rimandato a bella posta le fanciulle».
22 Susanna sighed. 'I am trapped,' she said, 'whatever I do. If I agree, it means death for me; if I resist, Icannot get away from you.	22 Susanna mandò un gemito e disse: «Sono messa alle strette, da tutte le parti, se io faccio questo, la morte m'incoglie, e se non lo faccio non potrò sfuggire dalle vostre mani.
23 But I prefer to fal innocent into your power than to sin in the eyes of the Lord.'	23 Ma è meglio non farlo e cadere in mano vostra piuttosto che peccare nel cospetto del Signore».
24 She then cried out as loud as she could. The two elders began shouting too, putting the blame onher,	24 Poi Susanna mandò un gran grido, e i vecchi pure alzarono le voci contro.
25 and one of them ran to open the garden door.	25 Qualcuno accorse alla porta del giardino e aperse.
26 The household, hearing the shouting in the garden, rushed out by the side entrance to see what hadhappened to her.	26 Appena che furono udite le grida dai servi di casa dentro al giardino, questi si precipitarono dalla porta interna per vedere che fosse accaduto.
27 Once the elders had told their story, the servants were thoroughly taken aback, since nothing of thissort had ever been said of Susanna.	27 Ma dopo che i vecchi ebbero parlato, la servitù rimase confusa per la grande vergogna; perchè mai una parola simile era stata detta a Susanna. Venne intanto l'indomani.
28 Next day a meeting was held at the house of her husband Joakim. The two elders arrived, ful of theirwicked plea against Susanna, to have her put to death.	28 E quando il popolo fu radunato in casa di Joachim suo marito, arrivarono anche i due vecchi pieni di propositi iniqui contro Susanna per metterla a morte.
29 They addressed the company, 'Summon Susanna daughter of Hilkiah and wife of Joakim.' She wassent for,	29 Dissero dunque in presenza del popolo: «Mandate per Susanna figlia di Elcia, moglie di Joachim». E mandarono subito.
30 and came accompanied by her parents, her children and al her relations.	30 Essa venne coi genitori, coi figli e con tutti i parenti.
31 Susanna was very graceful and beautiful to look at;	31 Susanna era molto fine e di bell'aspetto;
32 she was veiled, so the wretches made her unveil in order to feast their eyes on her beauty.	32 e quegli iniqui ordinarono le fosse tolto il velo, perchè si era velata, affinchè almeno così si potessero saziare della sua bellezza.
33 Al her own people were weeping, and so were al the others who saw her.	33 I suoi intanto piangevano e con loro tutti quei che la conoscevano.
34 The two elders stood up, with al the people round them, and laid their hands on her head.	34 I due vecchi allora alzatisi in mezzo al popolo posero le mani sul capo di lei,
35 Tearful y she turned her eyes to Heaven, her heart confident in God.	35 ed essa piangendo alzò gli occhi al cielo, perchè aveva il cuore pieno di fiducia nel Signore.
36 The elders then spoke, 'While we were walking by ourselves in the garden, this woman arrived withtwo maids. She shut the garden door and then dismissed the servants.	36 Dissero i vecchi: «Nel mentre che soli passeggiavamo nel giardino, costei entrò con due fanciulle e chiuse le porte del giardino e rimandò le fanciulle.
37 A young man, who had been hiding, went over to her and they lay together.	37 Un giovane, che stava nascosto, le si accostò e si unì con lei.
38 From the end of the garden where we were, we saw this crime taking place and hurried towardsthem.	38 Noi che stavamo in un angolo del giardino vedendo quella iniquità, siamo corsi a loro e li abbiamo colti in flagrante.
39 Though we saw them together, we were unable to catch the man: he was too strong for us; heopened the door and took to his heels.	39 Lui non l'abbiamo potuto afferrare, perchè fu più forte di noi e aperte le porte se la diede a gambe,
40 We did, however, catch this woman and ask her who the young man was.	40 e costei presa sul fatto, l'abbiamo interrogata chi fosse quel giovane, ma non volle palesarlo: di questo siamo testimoni noi».
41 She refused to tel us. That is our evidence.' Since they were elders of the people and judges, theassembly accepted their word: Susanna was condemned to death.	41 La moltitudine prestò loro fede, come a due anziani e giudici del popolo; e condannarono Susanna a morte.
42 She cried out as loud as she could, 'Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before ithappens;	42 Susanna allora ad alta voce disse: «Dio eterno, conoscitore delle cose nascoste, che sai tutte le cose prima che esistano!
43 you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now I must die, innocent as I am ofeverything their malice has invented against me!'	43 Tu sai che hanno proferito una testimonianza falsa contro di me, ed ecco che io morirò senza aver fatto nulla di quanto costoro hanno malignamente inventato contro di me».
44 The Lord heard her cry	44 E il Signore esaudì la sua voce.
45 and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy called Daniel	45 Infatti, mentre era condotta al supplizio, il Signore suscitò lo spirito santo di un giovane che aveva nome Daniele,
46 who began to shout, 'I am innocent of this woman's death!'	46 il quale gridò ad alta voce: «Io sono innocente del sangue di costei».
47 At this al the people turned to him and asked, 'What do you mean by that?'	47 Tutto il popolo si rivolse verso di lui e disse: «Che parole sono queste che tu hai dette?».
48 Standing in the middle of the crowd, he replied, 'Are you so stupid, children of Israel, as to condemna daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth?	48 Allora, ritto in mezzo a loro, disse: «È così, che voi, stolti figli d'Israele, senza aver giudicato nè conosciuto la verità, condannate una figlia d'Israele?
49 Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.'	49 Ritornate al giudizio, perchè hanno detto testimonio falso contro di essa».
50 Al the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, 'Come and sit with us and tell us what youmean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.'	50 Il popolo allora tornò subito indietro e i due vecchi dissero a costui: «Vieni e siedi in mezzo di noi e informaci giacchè il Signore ti ha concesso il pregio dell'età senile».
51 Daniel said, 'Keep the men wel apart from each other, for I want to question them.'	51 Disse allora Daniele a quei del popolo: «Separateli lontano l'uno dall'altro e io li giudicherò».
52 When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. 'You have grown old inwickedness,' he said, 'and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you,	52 Separati che furon l'un dall'altro, Daniele chiamò l'uno di essi e gli disse: «Vecchio di giorni rei, or son venuti fuori i tuoi peccati che per l'addietro hai commessi,
53 you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of the guilty,although the Lord has said, "You must not put the innocent and upright to death."	53 legittimando l'ingiustizia, oprimendo gl'innocenti, lasciando impuniti i colpevoli, mentre il Signore dice: - Non ucciderai l'innocente e il giusto. -
54 Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tel me what sort of tree you saw them lying under.' Hereplied, 'Under an acacia tree.'	54 Or dunque se l'hai veduta, dichiara sotto che pianta li hai sorpresi a discorrere insieme». Rispose: «Sotto un lentischio».
55 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received fromhim your sentence and wil cut you in half.'	55 Disse Daniele: «È pretta bugia, che ti cascherà sul capo! Ecco l'angelo di Dio che ha ricevuta la sentenza e che ti spaccherà per mezzo».
56 He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, 'Son of Canaan, not ofJudah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray!	56 E rimandato questo, ordinò che venisse l'altro e gli disse: «Razza di Canaan e non di Giuda, la bellezza ti ha sedotto e la passione ti ha traviato il cuore.
57 This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel, and they have been too frightenedto resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness!	57 Così facevate colle figlie d'Israele ed esse impaurite da voi, accoglievano le vostre proposte, ma la figlia di Giuda non tollerò la vostra iniquità.
58 Now then, tel me what sort of tree you surprised them under.' He replied, 'Under an aspen tree.'	58 Or dunque dichiara, sotto a che pianta li hai sorpresi che si discorrevano». Rispose: «Sotto un elce».
59 Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting with a sword torend you in half, and destroy the pair of you.'	59 Disse allora Daniele: «Pretta menzogna anche questa, che ti ricascherà sul capo, perchè è qui stante l'angelo del Signore colla spada in pugno e ti fenderà per mezzo e tutti due vi metterà a morte».
60 Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the Saviour of those who trust in him.	60 Tutta l'adunanza proruppe in un alto grido e benedissero Dio che salva coloro che sperano in lui.
61 And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their ownmouths.	61 E si sollevarono contro i due vecchi, perchè Daniele li aveva per lor propria confessione convinti di aver detto un falso testimonio, e fecero ad essi secondo il male che avevano fatto al loro prossimo;
62 As the Law of Moses prescribes, they were given the same punishment as they had schemed toinflict on their neighbour. They were put to death. And thus, that day, an innocent life was saved.	62 col mettere in esecuzione la legge di Mosè e li misero a morte e il sangue innocente fu in quel giorno salvato.
63 Hilkiah and his wife gave thanks to God for their daughter Susanna, and so did her husband Joakimand all his relations, because she had been acquitted of anything dishonourable.	63 Elcia poi e sua moglie ringraziarono Dio per la loro figliuola Susanna, insieme a Joachim suo marito e a tutti i parenti, che non si fosse trovato in lei nulla di meno che onesto.
64 From that day onwards, Daniel's reputation stood high with the people.	64 E Daniele, da quel giorno in poi, diventò grande al cospetto del popolo.
	65 E il re Astiage andò a riunirsi ai suoi padri e Ciro Persiano gli succedette nel regno.
