NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, fourteen years to the day from the capture of the city, the hand of Yahweh was on me. He carried me away:1 In vigesimo quinto anno transmigrationis nostræ, in exordio anni, decima mensis, quartodecimo anno postquam percussa est civitas, in ipsa hac die, facta est super me manus Domini, et adduxit me illuc.
in divine visions, he carried me away to the land of Israel and put me down on a very high mountain,on the south of which there seemed to be built a city.2 In visionibus Dei adduxit me in terram Israël, et dimisit me super montem excelsum nimis, super quem erat quasi ædificium civitatis vergentis ad austrum.
He took me to it, and there I saw a man, whose appearance was like brass. He had a flax cord and ameasuring rod in his hand and was standing in the gateway.3 Et introduxit me illuc : et ecce vir cujus erat species quasi species æris, et funiculus lineus in manu ejus, et calamus mensuræ in manu ejus : stabat autem in porta.
The man said to me, 'Son of man, look careful y, listen closely and pay attention to everything I showyou, since you have been brought here only for me to show it to you. Tel the House of Israel everything that yousee.'4 Et locutus est ad me idem vir : Fili hominis, vide oculis tuis, et auribus tuis audi, et pone cor tuum in omnia quæ ego ostendam tibi, quia ut ostendantur tibi adductus es huc. Annuntia omnia quæ tu vides domui Israël.
Now, the Temple was surrounded on all sides by an outer wall. The man was holding a measuring rodsix cubits long, each cubit a forearm and a handsbreadth. He measured the thickness of this construction -- onerod; and its height -- one rod.5 Et ecce murus forinsecus in circuitu domus undique : et in manu viri calamus mensuræ sex cubitorum et palmo : et mensus est latitudinem ædificii calamo uno, altitudinem quoque calamo uno.
He went to the east gate, climbed the steps and measured its threshold: one rod deep.6 Et venit ad portam quæ respiciebat viam orientalem, et ascendit per gradus ejus : et mensus est limen portæ calamo uno latitudinem, id est, limen unum calamo uno in latitudine.
Each guardroom one rod by one rod; and the piers between the guardrooms five cubits thick, and thethreshold of the gate inwards from the porch of the gate: one rod.7 Et thalamum uno calamo in longum, et uno calamo in latum : et inter thalamos, quinque cubitos.
8 Et limen portæ, juxta vestibulum portæ intrinsecus, calamo uno.
He measured the porch of the gate: eight cubits; its piers: two cubits; the porch of the gate was at theinner end.9 Et mensus est vestibulum portæ octo cubitorum, et frontem ejus duobus cubitis : vestibulum autem portæ erat intrinsecus.
There were three guardrooms on each side of the east gate, al three of the same size; the piersbetween them al of the same thickness each side.10 Porro thalami portæ ad viam orientalem, tres hinc et tres inde : mensura una trium, et mensura una frontium ex utraque parte.
He measured the width of the entrance: ten cubits; and the width al down the gateway: thirteencubits.11 Et mensus est latitudinem liminis portæ decem cubitorum, et longitudinem portæ tredecim cubitorum.
There was a rail in front of the guardrooms; each rail on either side was one cubit. And theguardrooms on either side were six cubits square.12 Et marginem ante thalamos, cubiti unius, et cubitus unus finis utrimque : thalami autem sex cubitorum erant hinc et inde.
He measured the width of the gate from the back wal of one guardroom to the back wall of the other;it was twenty-five cubits across, the openings being opposite each other.13 Et mensus est portam a tecto thalami usque ad tectum ejus, latitudinem viginti quinque cubitorum, ostium contra ostium.
He measured the porch: twenty cubits; the court surrounded the gate on al sides.14 Et fecit frontes per sexaginta cubitos, et ad frontem atrium portæ undique per circuitum.
From the front of the entrance gate, to the far end of the porch of the inner gate: fifty cubits.15 Et ante faciem portæ quæ pertingebat usque ad faciem vestibuli portæ interioris, quinquaginta cubitos.
Al round inside the gate there were trel ised windows in the guardrooms and in their piers; similarly,in the porch there were windows all round and palm trees on the piers.16 Et fenestras obliquas in thalamis et in frontibus eorum, quæ erant intra portam undique per circuitum : similiter autem erant et in vestibulis fenestræ per gyrum intrinsecus, et ante frontes pictura palmarum.
He then took me to the outer court, which had rooms and a paved terrace going all the way round;there were thirty rooms on this terrace.17 Et eduxit me ad atrium exterius : et ecce gazophylacia, et pavimentum stratum lapide in atrio per circuitum : triginta gazophylacia in circuitu pavimenti.
This terrace, which came up to the sides of the gates and matched their depth, was the LowerTerrace. He measured the width of the court,18 Et pavimentum in fronte portarum, secundum longitudinem portarum erat inferius.
from the front of the lower gate to the fac ade of the inner court, outside: a hundred cubits (on theeast and on the north).19 Et mensus est latitudinem a facie portæ inferioris usque ad frontem atrii interioris extrinsecus : centum cubitos ad orientem et ad aquilonem.
He measured the length and breadth of the north gate of the outer court.20 Portam quoque quæ respiciebat viam aquilonis atrii exterioris, mensus est tam in longitudine quam in latitudine.
It had three guardrooms on each side; its piers and porch were of the same size as those of the firstgate: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.21 Et thalamos ejus tres hinc et tres inde, et frontem ejus et vestibulum ejus secundum mensuram portæ prioris, quinquaginta cubitorum longitudinem ejus, et latitudinem viginti quinque cubitorum.
Its windows, its porch and its palm trees were of the same size as those of the east gate. There were seven steps up to it, and its porch was at the inner end.22 Fenestræ autem ejus, et vestibulum, et sculpturæ secundum mensuram portæ quæ respiciebat ad orientem : et septem graduum erat ascensus ejus, et vestibulum ante eam.
In the inner court there was, opposite the north gate, a gate like the one opposite the east gate. Hemeasured the distance from one gate to the other: a hundred cubits.23 Et porta atrii interioris contra portam aquilonis et orientalem : et mensus est a porta usque ad portam centum cubitos.
He took me to the south side where there was a south gate; he measured its guardrooms, piers andporch; they were of the same size as the others.24 Et eduxit me ad viam australem : et ecce porta quæ respiciebat ad austrum : et mensus est frontem ejus et vestibulum ejus juxta mensuras superiores.
The gateway, as wel as its porch, had windows al round, like the windows of the others; it was fiftycubits long and twenty-five cubits wide,25 Et fenestras ejus, et vestibula in circuitu, sicut fenestras ceteras : quinquaginta cubitorum longitudine, et latitudine viginti quinque cubitorum.
and it had seven steps up to it; its porch was at the inner end and had palm trees on its piers, one oneither side.26 Et in gradibus septem ascendebatur ad eam, et vestibulum ante fores ejus : et cælatæ palmæ erant, una hinc, et altera inde, in fronte ejus.
The inner court had a south gate; he measured the distance southwards from one gate to the other: ahundred cubits.27 Et porta atrii interioris in via australi : et mensus est a porta usque ad portam in via australi, centum cubitos.
He then took me into the inner court by the south gate; he measured the south gate which was of thesame size as the others.28 Et introduxit me in atrium interius ad portam australem : et mensus est portam juxta mensuras superiores.
Its guardrooms, piers and porch were of the same size as the others.29 Thalamum ejus, et frontem ejus, et vestibulum ejus eisdem mensuris, et fenestras ejus, et vestibulum ejus in circuitu, quinquaginta cubitos longitudinis, et latitudinis viginti quinque cubitos.
The gateway, as wel as its porch, had windows al round; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-fivecubits wide.30 Et vestibulum per gyrum longitudine viginti quinque cubitorum, et latitudine quinque cubitorum :
The porch gave on to the outer court. It had palm trees on its piers and eight steps leading up to it.31 et vestibulum ejus ad atrium exterius, et palmas ejus in fronte : et octo gradus erant quibus ascendebatur per eam.
He took me to the eastern part of the inner court and measured the gate. It was of the same size asthe others.32 Et introduxit me in atrium interius, per viam orientalem : et mensus est portam secundum mensuras superiores.
Its guardrooms, piers and porch were of the same size as the others. The gateway, as well as itsporch, had windows al round; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.33 Thalamum ejus, et frontem ejus, et vestibulum ejus, sicut supra : et fenestras ejus, et vestibula ejus in circuitu, longitudine quinquaginta cubitorum, et latitudine viginti quinque cubitorum.
Its porch gave on to the outer court. There were palm trees on its piers on either side and eight stepsleading up to it.34 Et vestibulum ejus, id est, atrii exterioris, et palmæ cælatæ in fronte ejus, hinc et inde : et in octo gradibus ascensus ejus.
He then took me to the north gate and measured it.35 Et introduxit me ad portam quæ respiciebat ad aquilonem : et mensus est secundum mensuras superiores.
Its guardrooms, piers and porch were of the same size as the others. The gateway had windows alround; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.36 Thalamum ejus, et frontem ejus, et vestibulum ejus, et fenestras ejus per circuitum, longitudine quinquaginta cubitorum, et latitudine viginti quinque cubitorum.
Its porch gave on to the outer court. There were palm trees on its piers on either side and eight stepsleading up to it.37 Et vestibulum ejus respiciebat ad atrium exterius : et cælatura palmarum in fronte ejus, hinc et inde : et in octo gradibus ascensus ejus.
There was a room, the entrance to which was in the porch of the gateway, where they washed theburnt offerings.38 Et per singula gazophylacia ostium in frontibus portarum : ibi lavabant holocaustum.
And inside the porch of the gateway were slabs, two on either side, for slaughtering the burntofferings, the sacrifice for sin and the sacrifice of reparation.39 Et in vestibulo portæ, duæ mensæ hinc, et duæ mensæ inde, ut immoletur super eas holocaustum, et pro peccato et pro delicto.
Outside, at the approach to the entrance of the north gate, were two slabs, and on the other side, atthe porch end of the gate were two slabs.40 Et ad latus exterius, quod ascendit ad ostium portæ quæ pergit ad aquilonem, duæ mensæ : et ad latus alterum, ante vestibulum portæ, duæ mensæ :
There were four slabs on one side and four slabs on the other side of the gateway, eight slabs in all,on which the slaughtering was done.41 quatuor mensæ hinc, et quatuor mensæ inde : per latera portæ octo mensæ erant, super quas immolabant.
There were also four slabs of dressed stone for the burnt offerings, a cubit and a half long, a cubitand a half wide and a cubit high, on which the instruments for slaughtering the burnt offerings and sacrifice wereplaced;42 Quatuor autem mensæ ad holocaustum de lapidibus quadris exstructæ, longitudine cubiti unius et dimidii, et latitudine cubiti unius et dimidii, et altitudine cubiti unius : super quas ponant vasa in quibus immolatur holocaustum et victima.
runnels a handsbreadth wide went al round the top, and on these slabs was put the sacrificial flesh.43 Et labia earum palmi unius, reflexa intrinsecus per circuitum : super mensas autem carnes oblationis.
Then he took me into the inner court; there were two rooms in the inner court, one on the side of thenorth gate, facing south, the other on the side of the south gate, facing north.44 Et extra portam interiorem, gazophylacia cantorum in atrio interiori, quod erat in latere portæ respicientis ad aquilonem : et facies eorum contra viam australem : una ex latere portæ orientalis, quæ respiciebat ad viam aquilonis.
He told me, 'The room looking south is for the priests responsible for the service of the Temple,45 Et dixit ad me : Hoc est gazophylacium quod respicit viam meridianam : sacerdotum erit, qui excubant in custodiis templi.
and the room looking north is for the priests responsible for the service of the altar. These are thesons of Zadok, those of the sons of Levi who approach Yahweh to serve him.'46 Porro gazophylacium quod respicit ad viam aquilonis, sacerdotum erit, qui excubant ad ministerium altaris : isti sunt filii Sadoc, qui accedunt de filiis Levi ad Dominum ut ministrent ei.
