NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 'Because of the sins which you have committed before God you are to be deported to Babylon byNebuchadnezzar king of the Babylonians.	1 « Per i peccati da voi commessi dinanzi a Dio voi sarete condotti schiavi a Babilonia da Nabucodonosor, re dei Babilonesi.
2 Once you have reached Babylon you wil stay there for many years, as long as seven generations; afterwhich I shall bring you home in peace.	2 Entrati che sarete in Babilonia, vi starete per moltissimi anni, per lungo tempo, fino a sette generazioni, e dopo ciò vi farò venir via in pace.
3 Now in Babylon you wil see gods made of silver, of gold, of wood, being carried shoulder-high, andfilling the gentiles with fear.	3 Or voi vedrete a Babilonia degli dèi d'oro, d'argento, di pietra, di legno, portali sulle spalle per incutere timore alle nazioni.
4 Be on your guard! Do not imitate the foreigners, do not have any fear of their gods	4 Guardate di non imitare il far degli stranieri, di non aver paura, di non temerli.
5 as you see their worshippers prostrating themselves before and behind them. Instead, say in yourhearts, "Master, it is you that we must worship."	5 E quando vedrete che la folla davanti e di dietro li adora, dite nel vostro cuore: « Bisogna adorare Te, o Signore».
6 For my angel is with you; your lives wil be in his care.	6 Il mio angelo è con voi ed io stesso prenderò cura della vostra vita.
7 'Overlaid with gold and silver, their tongues polished smooth by a craftsman, they are counterfeit andhave no power to speak.	7 Infatti la loro lingua è limata dall'artefice, ed essi, sebbene siano dorati e inargentati, sono menzogne, e non possono parlare.
8 As though for a girl fond of finery, these people take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods.	8 E come a fanciulla che ama gli ornamenti, preso l'oro, sono stati fatti.
9 And sometimes, the priests filch gold and silver from their gods to spend on themselves, even givingsome of it to the prostitutes on the terrace.	9 Certo i loro dèi hanno sul capo delle corone d'oro, e da essi i sacerdoti tolgono l'oro e l'argento e se l'appropriano,
10 They dress up these gods of silver, gold and wood, in clothes, like human beings; on their own theycannot protect themselves from either tarnish or woodworm;	10 e di esso fanno parte alle prostitute, e con esso adornano le meretrici, e poi, quando l'hanno riavuto dalle meretrici, di nuovo ne abbelliscono i loro dèi.
11 when they have been dressed in purple cloaks, their faces have to be dusted, because of the templedust which settles thick on them.	11 Questi poi sono incapaci di liberarsi dalla ruggine e dalla tignola,
12 One holds a sceptre like the governor of a province, yet is powerless to put to death anyone whooffends him;	12 e quando li hanno rivestiti di porpora, lavan loro la faccia, per la polvere del tempio che è in abbondanza addosso a loro.
13 another holds sword and mace in his right hand, yet is powerless to defend himself against war orthieves.	13 (Uno di questi idoli) tiene in mano lo scettro, come un uomo, come un governatore del paese, e non può far morir chi l'offende.
14 From this it is evident that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	14 Ha ancora la spada e la scure in mano, ma non può salvarsi dalla guerra e dai ladri. Per questo sia a voi noto che non son dèi.
15 'Just as a pot in common use becomes useless once it is broken, so are these gods enshrined insidetheir temples.	15 Non li temete, adunque. Come diviene per l'uomo inutile un vaso rotto, così sono i loro dèi.
16 Their eyes are ful of dust raised by the feet of those who enter.	16 Collocati che sono nel tempio, loro si copron gli occhi di polvere smossa dai piedi di chi entra,
17 Just as the doors are locked on al sides on someone who has offended a king and is under sentenceof death, so the priests secure the temples of these gods with gates and bolts and bars for fear of burglary.	17 e come per colui che ha offeso il re son chiuse da ogni parte le porte, come pure al morto messo nel sepolcro, così i sacerdoti assicurano le porte con serrature e sbarre, perchè non siano spogliati dai ladri.
18 They light more lamps for them than they do for themselves, and the gods see none of them.	18 Accendono pure loro delle lampade, e molte, delle quali non ne possono vedere nemmeno una: sono dunque nel tempio come travi.
19 They are like one of the temple beams, which are said to be gnawed away from within; the termitescreep out of the ground and eat them and their clothes too, and they feel nothing.	19 Dicono che i vermi, i quali vengon su dalla terra, mangiano loro il cuore, quando rodono loro e i loro vestimenti, ed essi non sentono.
20 Their faces are blackened by the smoke that rises from the temple.	20 Le loro facce diventano nere dal fumo che si fa nel tempio.
21 Bats, swal ows, birds of every kind perch on their bodies and heads, and so do cats.	21 Sopra il loro corpo e sopra il loro capo volano le civette e le rondini e gli altri uccelli e fanno lo stesso anche i gatti.
22 From this, you can see for yourselves that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	22 Da ciò imparate che non son dèi: non li temete adunque.
23 'The gold with which they are parading their futility before the world is supposed to make them lookbeautiful, but if someone does not rub off the tarnish, these gods wil not be shining much on their own, and evenwhile they were being cast, they felt nothing.	23 Ed anche l'oro che hanno addosso è per mostra, e se uno non li ripulisce dalla ruggine, non brilleranno, ed anche quando furono fusi non sentirono niente.
24 However much was paid for them, there is still no breath of life in them.	24 Furono comperati a prezzi favolosi, essi che non hanno vita.
25 Being unable to walk, they have to be carried on men's shoulders, which shows how futile they are. Itis humiliating for their worshippers, too, who have to stand them up again if they fal over.	25 Non avendo piedi son portati sulle spalle, mostrando cosi la loro vergognosa impotenza agli uomini. Sian confusi anche quelli che li adorano.
26 Once they have been stood up, they cannot move on their own; if they tilt askew, they cannot rightthemselves; offerings made to them might as wel be made to the dead.	26 Così se cascan per terra, da se stessi non si rialzano, e se qualcuno non li mette ritti, da se non ci staranno, e come a morti son messe davanti ad essi delle offerte.
27 Whatever is sacrificed to them, the priests re-sel and pocket the profit; while their wives salt down partof it, but give nothing to the poor or to the helpless. As to the sacrifices themselves, why, women during theirperiods and women in childbed are not afraid to touch them!	27 Le loro vittime le vendono i sacerdoti e a loro profitto, ed anche le loro donne ne prendono il meglio, senza dar nulla all'ammalato e al mendico.
28 From all this you can tel that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	28 Le donne che da poco hanno partorito e quelle che hanno il corso toccano i loro sacrifizi. Da ciò dunque ricavate che non son dèi, e non li temete.
29 'Indeed, how can they even be cal ed gods, when women do the offering to these gods of silver, goldand wood?	29 E perchè son chiamati dèi? Perchè le donne portano a questi dèi d'argento, d'oro, di legno,
30 In their temples, the priests stay sitting down, their garments torn, heads and beard shaved and headsuncovered;	30 e nei loro templi stanno i sacerdoti con tuniche stracciate, col capo e la barba rasa, col capo nudo,
31 they roar and shriek before their gods as people do at funeral feasts.	31 e dan ruggiti, alzando la voce davanti ai loro dèi, come si fa nella cena di un morto.
32 The priests take robes from the gods to clothe their own wives and children.	32 I sacerdoti tolgon loro le vesti e ne ricoprono le mogli e i figlioli.
33 Whether these gods are treated badly or well, they are incapable of paying back either treatment; asincapable too of making or unmaking kings,	33 E vien fatto loro del male o del bene, non possono rendere il contraccambio: sono incapaci di stabilire un re e di toglierlo.
34 equal y incapable of distributing wealth or money. If anyone fails to honour a vow he has made tothem, they cannot cal him to account.	34 Parimenti non possono dare ricchezze nè rendere il male. Se uno fa ad essi un voto e non l'adempie, anche di questo non se ne curano.
35 They can neither save anyone from death nor rescue the weak from the strong,	35 Sono incapaci di liberare l'uomo dalla morte, di salvare il debole dal prepotente.
36 nor restore sight to the blind, nor save anyone in trouble,	36 Non rendono la vista al cieco, non tolgono l'uoino dalla miseria.
37 nor take pity on a widow, nor be generous to an orphan.	37 Non avran pietà della vedova, non faran del bene agli orfani.
38 These wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are about as much use as rocks cut out of themountain side. Their worshippers wil be confounded!	38 Son simili alle pietre della montagna questi loro dèi di legno, di pietra, d'oro, d'argento, e coloro che li adorano saranno confusi.
39 So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	39 Come dunque si potrà credere o dire che sono dèi?
40 'The Chaldaeans themselves do them no honour; if they find someone who is dumb and cannot speak,they present him to Bel, entreating him for the gift of speech, as though he could perceive it!	40 Inoltre gli stessi Caldei non li rispettano: quando sentono che uno è muto e non può parlare, lo presentano a Bel, chiedendogli che parli,
41 And they are incapable of drawing the conclusion and abandoning those gods -- such is their lack ofperception.	41 come se potessero sentire quelli che non hanno moto: e quando han capito lo abbandonano, perchè i loro dèi non han sentimento.
42 Women with strings round their waists sit in the streets, burning bran like incense;	42 Delle donne cinte di corde stanno a seder per le strade, bruciando noccioli d'ulive,
43 when one of these has been picked up by a passer-by and been to bed with him, she then gloats overher neighbour for not having been thought as worthy as herself and for not having had her string broken.	43 e quando una di esse, condotta via da uno che passa, ha dormito con lui, rinfaccia alla sua vicina di non essere stata stimata da tanto come essa, e che la sua fune non è stata rotta.
44 Whatever is done for them is spurious. So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	44 Così tutto ciò che si fa a loro riguardo è menzogna. Come dunque si potrà credere o dire che siano dèi?
45 'Made by woodworkers and goldsmiths, they are only what those workmen decide to make them.	45 Sono stati fatti da artigiani, orefici, e non saranno altro che quello che vogliono i sacerdoti.
46 Their makers have not long to live themselves, so how can the things they make be gods?	46 Gli stessi operai che li fanno non son di lunga durata, e potranno dunque esser dèi i lavori Ditti da i loro?
47 Their legacy to their descendants is nothing but delusion and dishonour.	47 Hanno lasciato imposta­ra e obbrobrio ai loro posteri.
48 If war or disasters befal them, the priests discuss where best to hide themselves and these gods;	48 Quando loro sovrasta guerra o sventure, i sacerdoti van pensando dove rifugiarsi coi loro (dèi).
49 how can anyone fail to realise that they are not gods, if they cannot save themselves from war or fromdisasters?	49 Come dunque si può credere che sian dèi quelli che non liberano dalla guerra, non salvano dalle sventure?
50 And since they are only made of wood overlaid with gold or silver, it wil later become apparent thatthey are spurious; it wil be obvious to everyone, to nations as to kings, that they are not gods but the work ofhuman hands, and that there is no divine activity in them.	50 Essendo non altro che legno indorato e inargentato, si conoscerà il futuro da tutte le nazioni e dai re che son falsità, essendo chiaro che non son dèi, ma opere delle mani degli uomini, e che in essa non v'è alcuna operazione di Dio.
51 Does anyone still need convincing that they are not gods?	51 E da che dunque conoscesi che non son dèi, ma opera delle mani degli uomini, e che in essi non v'è alcuna operazione di Dio?
52 'They can neither appoint a king over a country, nor give rain to humankind,	52 Non danno il re ad un regno, e non daranno agli uomini l'acqua.
53 nor regulate their own affairs, nor rescue anyone who suffers a wrong; they are as helpless as crowsbetween sky and ground.	53 Non sapranno giudicare le cause, e non libereranno le province dalle ingiustizie, perchè nulla possono, simili a cornacchie tra il cielo e la terra.
54 If fire fal s on the temple of these wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests fly to safetywhile they for their part stay there like beams, to be burnt.	54 E quando s'appiccherà il fuoco al tempio degli dèi di legno, d'argento e d'oro, gli stessi loro sacerdoti certo fuggiranno e si metteranno in salvo, ma essi, come travi, vi bruceranno dentro.
55 They cannot put up any resistance to a king or to enemies.	55 Essi poi non faran resistenza nè al re, nè alla guerra. Come adunque si può credere e ritenere che sian dèi?
56 So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	56 Non si potranno salvare nè lai ladri nè dai briganti gli dèi di legno, di pietra, indorati, inargentati; quelli, più forti di loro,
57 'These wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver cannot evade thieves or marauders; strong men mayrob them of their gold and silver and make off with the robes they are dressed in; yet they are powerless to helpeven themselves.	57 torranno ad essi l'oro, l'argento, il vestito del quale son copersi e se ne andranno, ed essi non si potranno dare alcun aiuto.
58 Better to be a king displaying his prowess, a household pot of use to its owner, than to be thesecounterfeit gods; or merely the door of a house, protecting what is inside, than these counterfeit gods; or awooden pil ar in a palace than these counterfeit gods.	58 Così val più un re che mostra le sue forze, un vaso utile nella casa, di cui il padrone si potrà vantare, la porta d'una casa, che custodisce ciò che in essa si trova, dei falsi dèi.
59 The sun, the moon and the stars, which shine and have been given work to do, are obedient;	59 Così il sole, la luna, le stelle, col loro splendore, mandate per essere utili, obbediscono;
60 similarly, the lightning, as it flashes, is a fine sight; in the same way, the wind blows across everycountry,	60 così pure il fulmine, quando apparisce, si fa distinguere, e il vento soffia su tutti i paesi,
61 the clouds execute the order God gives them to pass over the whole earth, and the fire, sent fromabove to consume mountain and forest, carries out its orders.	61 e le nubi, quando è loro comandato da Dio di percorrere tutto il globo, eseguiscono gli ordini avuti,
62 Now these gods are not their equals, either in beauty or in power.	62 ed anche il fuoco, mandato dall'alto a consumare i monti e le selve, eseguisce quanto gli è ordinato, questi (idoli) invece non son da paragonarsi ad una di queste cose, nè per bellezza nè per forza.
63 So, no one can think or say that they are gods, powerless as they are to administer justice or to doanyone any good.	63 Dunque non si può nè credere, nè dire che essi siano dèi, quando non possono nè discernere il giusto, nè far qualche cosa agli uomini.
64 Therefore, knowing that they are not gods, do not be afraid of them.	64 Conoscendo adunque che non son dèi, non li temete.
65 'For they can neither curse nor bless kings,	65 Essi sono incapaci di maledire i re o di benedire;
66 nor produce signs in heaven for the nations, nor shine like the sun, nor shed light like the moon.	66 e non faran vedere alle nazioni dei segni nel cielo, non splenderanno come il sole, non faran lume come la luna.
67 The animals are better off than they are, being able to look after themselves by making for cover.	67 Le bestie son da più di loro, perchè posson fuggire al coperto, e giovare a se stesse.
68 There is not the slightest shred of evidence that they are gods; so do not be afraid of them!	68 É' dunque a noi manifesto che in nessuna maniera possono essere dèi; dunque non li temete.
69 'Their wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are like a scarecrow in a field of cucumbers --protecting nothing.	69 E come in un campo di cocomeri uno spauracchio non guarda niente, così sono i loro dèi di legno, d'argento e d'oro.
70 Or again, their wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are like a thorn-bush in a garden -- any kind of bird may perch on it -- or like a corpse thrown out into the dark.	70 E come in un orto il biancospino, sul quale vanno a posarsi tutti gli uccelli, e come un morto gettato nelle tenebre sono i loro dèi di legno indorati, inargentati.
71 From the purple and linen rotting on their backs you can tell that they are not gods; and in the end,eaten away, they wil be the dishonour of the country.	71 Anche dalla porpora e dallo scarlatto, che intigna addosso a loro, potete capire che non son dèi. Ed anche essi stessi finalmente saranno divorati, e saranno la vergogna del paese.
72 Better, then, someone upright who has no idols; dishonour wil never come near him.'	72 In miglior condizione è l'uomo giusto, che non ha idoli, perchè sarà lontano dall'ignominia ».
