1 'Because of the sins which you have committed before God you are to be deported to Babylon byNebuchadnezzar king of the Babylonians.	1 COPIA della lettera mandata da Geremia a quegli, che dovcano essere condotti schiavi a Babilonia dal re de' Babilonesi, per far loro sapere quello, che Dio aveva a lui comandato. Per ragion de' peccati commessi dinanzi al Signore voi sarete condotti schiavi a Babilonia da Nabuchodonosor re de' Babilonesi.
2 Once you have reached Babylon you wil stay there for many years, as long as seven generations; afterwhich I shall bring you home in peace.	2 Arrivati adunque a Babilonia, ivi starete per moltissimi anni, e per lungo tempo fino a sette generazioni: e dipoi vi trarrò di colà in pace.
3 Now in Babylon you wil see gods made of silver, of gold, of wood, being carried shoulder-high, andfilling the gentiles with fear.	3 Ma adesso voi vedrete in Babilonia dei d'oro, e d'argento, e di pietra, e di legno portarsi sopra le spalle, e incuter timore alle genti.
4 Be on your guard! Do not imitate the foreigners, do not have any fear of their gods	4 Badate adunque di non imitar voi pure il fare degli stranieri, sicché abbiate paura, e vi prenda il timore di tali dei.
5 as you see their worshippers prostrating themselves before and behind them. Instead, say in yourhearts, "Master, it is you that we must worship."	5 Quando adunque vedrete la turba dinanzi, e di dietro adorarli, dite ne' vostri cuori: Te fa d'uopo di adorare, o Signore;
6 For my angel is with you; your lives wil be in his care.	6 Perocché il mio Angelo è con voi, ed io stesso avrò cura delle anime vostre.
7 'Overlaid with gold and silver, their tongues polished smooth by a craftsman, they are counterfeit andhave no power to speak.	7 Conciossiachè la loro lingua fu limata dall'artefice: quegli ancora, che sono indorati, e inargentati, sono menzogna, e non posson parlare.
8 As though for a girl fond of finery, these people take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods.	8 E come si fa ad una fanciulla, che ama gli ornamenti, così dato di mano all'oro si ornano questi con arte.
9 And sometimes, the priests filch gold and silver from their gods to spend on themselves, even givingsome of it to the prostitutes on the terrace.	9 Certo, che i loro dei hanno sulle lor teste corone di oro, onde poi i sacerdoti tolgon ad essi l'oro, e l'argento, e se l'appropriano.
10 They dress up these gods of silver, gold and wood, in clothes, like human beings; on their own theycannot protect themselves from either tarnish or woodworm;	10 E di questo ne ornano le prostitute, e le meretrici, e vicendevolmente riavutolo dalle meretrici ne abbelliscono i loro dei;
11 when they have been dressed in purple cloaks, their faces have to be dusted, because of the templedust which settles thick on them.	11 E questi (dei) non san liberarsi dalla ruggine, e dalla tignuola.
12 One holds a sceptre like the governor of a province, yet is powerless to put to death anyone whooffends him;	12 Ma quando gli han rivestiti di porpora, lavati loro la faccia a motivo della polvere, che è grandissima ne' loro templi.
13 another holds sword and mace in his right hand, yet is powerless to defend himself against war orthieves.	13 E l'idolo ha in mano lo scettro come un uomo, come uno, che governa un paese: ma egli non fa morir chi lo offende.
14 From this it is evident that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	14 Ha talora in mano la spada, e la scure, ma non si può salvar dalla guerra, né dai ladri; per le quali cose in tendete com'ei non son dii.
15 'Just as a pot in common use becomes useless once it is broken, so are these gods enshrined insidetheir temples.	15 Non abbiate adunque timore di essi: imperocché tali sono i loro dei, qnal è un vaso rotto, che non è buono a nulla.
16 Their eyes are ful of dust raised by the feet of those who enter.	16 Collocati, che sono in una casa, i loro occhi si cuopron di polvere smossa da' piedi di color, che vi entrano.
17 Just as the doors are locked on al sides on someone who has offended a king and is under sentenceof death, so the priests secure the temples of these gods with gates and bolts and bars for fear of burglary.	17 E siccome colui, che ha offeso il re, si chiude dentro molte porte, o come fassi ad un morto, che si conduca alla sepoltura; cosi i sacerdoti assicuran le porte con serrature, e chiavistelli, affinché i ladri non ispoglin gli dei.
18 They light more lamps for them than they do for themselves, and the gods see none of them.	18 Accendon loro eziandio molte lampane, delle quali non posson quelli vederne pur una: ei sono come le travi in una casa.
19 They are like one of the temple beams, which are said to be gnawed away from within; the termitescreep out of the ground and eat them and their clothes too, and they feel nothing.	19 Dicono, che i serpenti, che son dalla terra, mangian le loro interiora quando mangiano ad essi i lor vestimenti, ed essi noi sentono.
20 Their faces are blackened by the smoke that rises from the temple.	20 Le loro facce son nere pel fumo, che si fa nelle lor case.
21 Bats, swal ows, birds of every kind perch on their bodies and heads, and so do cats.	21 Sopra il loro corpo, e sopra il loro capo volano le civette, e le rondini, e altri uccelli, e il simile fanno i gatti.
22 From this, you can see for yourselves that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	22 Donde imparate, che questi non sono dei: non abbiate adunque di essi timore.
23 'The gold with which they are parading their futility before the world is supposed to make them lookbeautiful, but if someone does not rub off the tarnish, these gods wil not be shining much on their own, and evenwhile they were being cast, they felt nothing.	23 l'oro ancora, che hanno, è per mostra: se qualcheduno non li ripulisce dalla ruggine, non saran risplendenti: e quando erano fusi, nulla sentivano.
24 However much was paid for them, there is still no breath of life in them.	24 E furon comprati a prezzo sommo, benché spirito non sia in essi.
25 Being unable to walk, they have to be carried on men's shoulders, which shows how futile they are. Itis humiliating for their worshippers, too, who have to stand them up again if they fal over.	25 Li portano sulle spalle quasi sian senza piedi, facendo vedere agli uomini la vergognosa loro impotenza. Siano confusi anche color, che gli adorano.
26 Once they have been stood up, they cannot move on their own; if they tilt askew, they cannot rightthemselves; offerings made to them might as wel be made to the dead.	26 Per questo se cascan per terra, non si rialzan da loro, e se uno li collocherà ritti, da per loro non istaranuo, ma si reggeranno sugli omeri di quelli, come i morti.
27 Whatever is sacrificed to them, the priests re-sel and pocket the profit; while their wives salt down partof it, but give nothing to the poor or to the helpless. As to the sacrifices themselves, why, women during theirperiods and women in childbed are not afraid to touch them!	27 Le loro ostie le vendono i sacerdoti in loro prò, ed anche le loro donne ne strappano, e non ne fanno parte all'ammalato, né al mendico;
28 From all this you can tel that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	28 I lor sagrifizj li toccano donne fresche dal parto, e le menstruate. Conoscendo adunque da tali cose, ch'ei non son dei, non li temete;
29 'Indeed, how can they even be cal ed gods, when women do the offering to these gods of silver, goldand wood?	29 Imperocché a qual titolo si chiaman dei perché le donne presentano doni a questi dei d'argento, d'oro, e di legno,
30 In their temples, the priests stay sitting down, their garments torn, heads and beard shaved and headsuncovered;	30 E nelle case di essi seggono i sacerdoti, portando tonache stracciate, e rase le teste, e la barba, e il capo ignudo.
31 they roar and shriek before their gods as people do at funeral feasts.	31 E dan ruggiti alzando la voce ai loro dei, come si fa alla cena di un morto.
32 The priests take robes from the gods to clothe their own wives and children.	32 I sacerdoti tolgon loro le vestimenta, e ne rivéston le mogli, e i figliuoli.
33 Whether these gods are treated badly or well, they are incapable of paying back either treatment; asincapable too of making or unmaking kings,	33 E se è fatto loro del male, e se è fatto loro del bene, non posson rendere il contraccambio: e non possono fare un re, né disfarlo.
34 equal y incapable of distributing wealth or money. If anyone fails to honour a vow he has made tothem, they cannot cal him to account.	34 Parimente non possono né dar ricchezze, né vendicarsi. Se uno fa ad essi un voto, e noll'adempie, neppur di ciò si querelano.
35 They can neither save anyone from death nor rescue the weak from the strong,	35 Non liberanti' uomo dalla morte, e non salvano il debole dal più possente.
36 nor restore sight to the blind, nor save anyone in trouble,	36 Non rendono a' ciechi la vista non traggon uomo dalla miseria.
37 nor take pity on a widow, nor be generous to an orphan.	37 Non avran pietà della vedova, né faranno bene agli orfani.
38 These wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are about as much use as rocks cut out of themountain side. Their worshippers wil be confounded!	38 Simili alle pietre del monte son questi loro dei di legno, di pietra, d'oro, e d'argento. E color, che gli onorano, saran confusi.
39 So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	39 Come dunque è da pensarsi, o da dirsi, ch'ei siano dei,
40 'The Chaldaeans themselves do them no honour; if they find someone who is dumb and cannot speak,they present him to Bel, entreating him for the gift of speech, as though he could perceive it!	40 Quando di più i Caldei stessi non li rispettano? eglino quando hanno udito, che uno non può parlare, perché è unitolo, lo presentano a Bel, pre gandolo a far, ch'ei parli;
41 And they are incapable of drawing the conclusion and abandoning those gods -- such is their lack ofperception.	41 Come se potessero aver sentimento coloro, che non hanno moto; ed egli stessi, fatti accorti, gli abbandonano; perocché i loro dei non han senso.
42 Women with strings round their waists sit in the streets, burning bran like incense;	42 Ma le donne cinte di corde seggon per le strade, brugiando noccioli d'ulivi.
43 when one of these has been picked up by a passer-by and been to bed with him, she then gloats overher neighbour for not having been thought as worthy as herself and for not having had her string broken.	43 E quando una di esse condotta via da uno, che passa, ha dormito con lui getta in faccia alla sua vicina, che ella non è stata stimata da tanto com'essa, e che la sua corda non è stata rotta.
44 Whatever is done for them is spurious. So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	44 E tutto quello, che intorno ad essi ai fa, è cosa falsa. Come mai è da pensarsi, o da dirsi, ch'ei siano dei?
45 'Made by woodworkers and goldsmiths, they are only what those workmen decide to make them.	45 Sono stati fatti da legnajuoli, e da orefici. E non altro saranno, che quello, che piacerà a' sacerdoti.
46 Their makers have not long to live themselves, so how can the things they make be gods?	46 Gli stessi artefici, che li fanno, non son di lunga durata. Potrann' eglino adunque esser dei i lavori fatti da essi?
47 Their legacy to their descendants is nothing but delusion and dishonour.	47 Hanno lasciate menzogne, e ob brobrio a quei, che saranno dopo di loro.
48 If war or disasters befal them, the priests discuss where best to hide themselves and these gods;	48 Che se sopraggiunge loro guerra, e sciagure, i sacerdoti vanno pensando dove riporsi con que' lor dei.
49 how can anyone fail to realise that they are not gods, if they cannot save themselves from war or fromdisasters?	49 Come mai adunque possono essere in concetto di dei coloro, che né dalla guerra si liberano, né si sottraggono alle sciagure?
50 And since they are only made of wood overlaid with gold or silver, it wil later become apparent thatthey are spurious; it wil be obvious to everyone, to nations as to kings, that they are not gods but the work ofhuman hands, and that there is no divine activity in them.	50 Imperocché essendo cose di legno, e indorate, e inargentate, si conoscerà una volta da tutte le genti, e dai regi che son falsità: manifesto essendo, ch'ei non son dei, ma opere delle mani degli uomini, e non fanno nulla, che sia da Dio.
51 Does anyone still need convincing that they are not gods?	51 E donde adunque conoscesi, ch'ei non sono dei, ma opere delle mani degli uomini, e che nulla fanno, che sia da Dio?
52 'They can neither appoint a king over a country, nor give rain to humankind,	52 Non danno il re ad un regno, né concedono agli uomini la pioggia,
53 nor regulate their own affairs, nor rescue anyone who suffers a wrong; they are as helpless as crowsbetween sky and ground.	53 Non decideranno le controversie, né libereranno le provincie dalle ingiurie; perocché nulla possono, come cornacchie, che volan di mezzo tral cielo, e la terra.
54 If fire fal s on the temple of these wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests fly to safetywhile they for their part stay there like beams, to be burnt.	54 Imperocché quando si sarà appiccato il fuoco alla casa degli dei di legno, d'argento, e d'oro, i lor sacerdoti fuggiran certamente, e si metteranno in salvo; ma eglino vi brugeranno dentro non men che le travi.
55 They cannot put up any resistance to a king or to enemies.	55 E non faran resistenza a un re in tempo di guerra: come adunque da pensarsi, o da tenersi, ch'ei siano dei?
56 So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	56 Non si salveranno da' ladri, né da' malandrini gli dei di legno, e di pietra, e indorati, e inargentati, perchè quelli ne posson più,
57 'These wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver cannot evade thieves or marauders; strong men mayrob them of their gold and silver and make off with the robes they are dressed in; yet they are powerless to helpeven themselves.	57 E terranno loro l'argento, e l'oro e il vestito, onde son ricoperti, e se n' anderanno; e gli dei non aiuteranno se stessi.
58 Better to be a king displaying his prowess, a household pot of use to its owner, than to be thesecounterfeit gods; or merely the door of a house, protecting what is inside, than these counterfeit gods; or awooden pil ar in a palace than these counterfeit gods.	58 Perla qual cosa miglior cosa è un re, che fa mostra di suo valore, od un vaso utile nella casa, di cui si farà gloria il padrone, o la porta della casa, che custodisce quel, che in essa si trova, che i falsi dei.
59 The sun, the moon and the stars, which shine and have been given work to do, are obedient;	59 Certamente il sole, e la luna, e le stelle mandate ad esser utili col loro splendore, sono ubbidienti.
60 similarly, the lightning, as it flashes, is a fine sight; in the same way, the wind blows across everycountry,	60 Similmente anche il folgore si fa distinguere quando apparisce; e pari mente anche il vento spira in ogni regione.
61 the clouds execute the order God gives them to pass over the whole earth, and the fire, sent fromabove to consume mountain and forest, carries out its orders.	61 E le nuvole quando è lor comandato da Dio di scorrere tutto l'orbe, fanno quel, che fu lor comandato.
62 Now these gods are not their equals, either in beauty or in power.	62 Il fuoco ancora mandato di sopra a consumare i monti, e le selve, fa quel, che gli fu ordinato. Ma costoro né per bellezza, né per virtudi sono simili ad una di queste cose:
63 So, no one can think or say that they are gods, powerless as they are to administer justice or to doanyone any good.	63 Per la qual cosa da pensarsi non è, né da dirsi, che questi siano dei, mentre non possono né far giustizia, né far cosa alcuna agli uomini.
64 Therefore, knowing that they are not gods, do not be afraid of them.	64 Conoscendo pertanto, che ei non son dei, voi perciò non li temete;
65 'For they can neither curse nor bless kings,	65 Imperocché eglino non manderanno maledizione ai regi, né benedizione.
66 nor produce signs in heaven for the nations, nor shine like the sun, nor shed light like the moon.	66 Ei non mostrano a' popoli nel cielo i segni de' tempi: né splenderan come il sole, né faran lume come la luna.
67 The animals are better off than they are, being able to look after themselves by making for cover.	67 Da più di loro sono le bestie, che possono fuggire al coperto, e giovare a se stesse.
68 There is not the slightest shred of evidence that they are gods; so do not be afraid of them!	68 In verun modo adunque non sono, dei, com'è manifesto: per questo adunque non li temete;
69 'Their wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are like a scarecrow in a field of cucumbers --protecting nothing.	69 Imperocché siccome in un cocomeraio uno spauracchio non è buona guardia, cosi sono i loro dei di legno, d'argento, e d'oro.
70 Or again, their wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are like a thorn-bush in a garden -- any kind of bird may perch on it -- or like a corpse thrown out into the dark.	70 E nella stessa guisa succede della vitalba in un orto, sulla quale vanno posarsi tutti gli uccelli. Simili ancora son questi loro dei di legno, e indorati, e inargentati ad un morto gittato tralle tenebre.
71 From the purple and linen rotting on their backs you can tell that they are not gods; and in the end,eaten away, they wil be the dishonour of the country.	71 Dalla porpora ancora, e dallo scarlatto, che intignono addosso a loro, imparerete di certo, ch'ei non sou dei. Eglino stessi finalmente saran mangiati, e saranno l'obbrobrio d'ogni paese.
72 Better, then, someone upright who has no idols; dishonour wil never come near him.'	72 Migliore è l'uomo giusto, che non ha idoli: perocché egli sarà lungi dall'ignominia.
