1 'Because of the sins which you have committed before God you are to be deported to Babylon byNebuchadnezzar king of the Babylonians.	1 Per i peccati da voi commessi di fronte a Dio sarete condotti prigionieri a Babilonia da Nabucodònosor, re dei Babilonesi.
2 Once you have reached Babylon you wil stay there for many years, as long as seven generations; afterwhich I shall bring you home in peace.	2 Giunti dunque a Babilonia, vi resterete molti anni e per lungo tempo fino a sette generazioni; dopo vi ricondurrò di là in pace.
3 Now in Babylon you wil see gods made of silver, of gold, of wood, being carried shoulder-high, andfilling the gentiles with fear.	3 Ora, vedrete a Babilonia idoli d’argento, d’oro e di legno, portati a spalla, i quali infondono timore alle nazioni.
4 Be on your guard! Do not imitate the foreigners, do not have any fear of their gods	4 State attenti dunque a non divenire in tutto simili agli stranieri; il timore dei loro dèi non si impadronisca di voi.
5 as you see their worshippers prostrating themselves before and behind them. Instead, say in yourhearts, "Master, it is you that we must worship."	5 Alla vista di una moltitudine che prostrandosi davanti e dietro a loro li adora, dite a voi stessi: «Te dobbiamo adorare, Signore».
6 For my angel is with you; your lives wil be in his care.	6 Poiché il mio angelo è con voi, ed è lui che si prende cura delle vostre vite.
7 'Overlaid with gold and silver, their tongues polished smooth by a craftsman, they are counterfeit andhave no power to speak.	7 Essi hanno una lingua limata da un artefice, sono coperti d’oro e d’argento, ma sono simulacri falsi e non possono parlare.
8 As though for a girl fond of finery, these people take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods.	8 E come per una ragazza amante degli ornamenti, prendono oro e acconciano corone sulla testa dei loro dèi.
9 And sometimes, the priests filch gold and silver from their gods to spend on themselves, even givingsome of it to the prostitutes on the terrace.	9 Talvolta anche i sacerdoti, togliendo ai loro dèi oro e argento, lo spendono per sé, e lo danno anche alle prostitute nei postriboli.
10 They dress up these gods of silver, gold and wood, in clothes, like human beings; on their own theycannot protect themselves from either tarnish or woodworm;	10 Adornano poi con vesti, come gli uomini, gli dèi d’argento, d’oro e di legno; ma essi non sono in grado di salvarsi dalla ruggine e dai tarli.
11 when they have been dressed in purple cloaks, their faces have to be dusted, because of the templedust which settles thick on them.	11 Sono avvolti in una veste purpurea, ma bisogna pulire il loro volto per la polvere del tempio che si posa abbondante su di essi.
12 One holds a sceptre like the governor of a province, yet is powerless to put to death anyone whooffends him;	12 Come il governatore di una regione, il dio ha lo scettro, ma non stermina colui che lo offende.
13 another holds sword and mace in his right hand, yet is powerless to defend himself against war orthieves.	13 Ha il pugnale e la scure nella destra, ma non si libererà dalla guerra e dai ladri.
14 From this it is evident that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	14 Per questo è evidente che essi non sono dèi; non temeteli, dunque!
15 'Just as a pot in common use becomes useless once it is broken, so are these gods enshrined insidetheir temples.	15 Come un vaso di terra una volta rotto diventa inutile, così sono i loro dèi, posti nei templi.
16 Their eyes are ful of dust raised by the feet of those who enter.	16 I loro occhi sono pieni della polvere sollevata dai piedi di coloro che entrano.
17 Just as the doors are locked on al sides on someone who has offended a king and is under sentenceof death, so the priests secure the temples of these gods with gates and bolts and bars for fear of burglary.	17 Come per uno che abbia offeso un re si tiene bene sbarrato il luogo dove è detenuto perché deve essere condotto a morte, così i sacerdoti assicurano i templi con porte, con serrature e con spranghe, perché non vengano saccheggiati dai ladri.
18 They light more lamps for them than they do for themselves, and the gods see none of them.	18 Accendono lucerne, persino più numerose che per se stessi, ma gli dèi non possono vederne alcuna.
19 They are like one of the temple beams, which are said to be gnawed away from within; the termitescreep out of the ground and eat them and their clothes too, and they feel nothing.	19 Sono come una trave del tempio il cui interno, si dice, viene divorato, e anch’essi, senza accorgersene, insieme con le loro vesti sono divorati dagli insetti che strisciano fuori dalla terra.
20 Their faces are blackened by the smoke that rises from the temple.	20 Il loro volto si annerisce per il fumo del tempio.
21 Bats, swal ows, birds of every kind perch on their bodies and heads, and so do cats.	21 Sul loro corpo e sulla testa si posano pipistrelli, rondini, gli uccelli, come anche i gatti.
22 From this, you can see for yourselves that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	22 Di qui potrete conoscere che essi non sono dèi; non temeteli, dunque!
23 'The gold with which they are parading their futility before the world is supposed to make them lookbeautiful, but if someone does not rub off the tarnish, these gods wil not be shining much on their own, and evenwhile they were being cast, they felt nothing.	23 L’oro di cui sono adorni per bellezza non risplende se qualcuno non ne toglie la ruggine; persino quando venivano fusi, essi non se ne accorgevano.
24 However much was paid for them, there is still no breath of life in them.	24 Furono comprati a qualsiasi prezzo, essi che non hanno alito vitale.
25 Being unable to walk, they have to be carried on men's shoulders, which shows how futile they are. Itis humiliating for their worshippers, too, who have to stand them up again if they fal over.	25 Senza piedi, vengono portati a spalla, mostrando agli uomini la loro vile condizione; provano vergogna anche coloro che li servono, perché, se cadono a terra, non si rialzano più.
26 Once they have been stood up, they cannot move on their own; if they tilt askew, they cannot rightthemselves; offerings made to them might as wel be made to the dead.	26 Neanche se uno li colloca diritti si muoveranno da sé, né se si sono inclinati si raddrizzeranno, ma si pongono offerte innanzi a loro come ai morti.
27 Whatever is sacrificed to them, the priests re-sel and pocket the profit; while their wives salt down partof it, but give nothing to the poor or to the helpless. As to the sacrifices themselves, why, women during theirperiods and women in childbed are not afraid to touch them!	27 I loro sacerdoti vendono le loro vittime e ne traggono profitto; allo stesso modo le mogli di costoro ne pongono sotto sale una parte e non ne danno né ai poveri né ai bisognosi. Anche una donna mestruata e la puerpera toccano le loro vittime.
28 From all this you can tel that they are not gods; do not be afraid of them.	28 Conoscendo dunque da questo che essi non sono dèi, non temeteli!
29 'Indeed, how can they even be cal ed gods, when women do the offering to these gods of silver, goldand wood?	29 Come dunque si potrebbero chiamare dèi? Poiché anche le donne sono ammesse a servire questi dèi d’argento, d’oro e di legno.
30 In their temples, the priests stay sitting down, their garments torn, heads and beard shaved and headsuncovered;	30 Nei loro templi i sacerdoti guidano il carro con le vesti stracciate, le teste e le guance rasate, a capo scoperto.
31 they roar and shriek before their gods as people do at funeral feasts.	31 Urlano alzando grida davanti ai loro dèi, come fanno alcuni durante un banchetto funebre.
32 The priests take robes from the gods to clothe their own wives and children.	32 I sacerdoti si portano via le vesti degli dèi e le fanno indossare alle loro mogli e ai loro bambini.
33 Whether these gods are treated badly or well, they are incapable of paying back either treatment; asincapable too of making or unmaking kings,	33 Gli idoli non potranno contraccambiare né il male né il bene ricevuto da qualcuno; non possono né costituire né spodestare un re.
34 equal y incapable of distributing wealth or money. If anyone fails to honour a vow he has made tothem, they cannot cal him to account.	34 Allo stesso modo non possono dare né ricchezze né denaro. Se qualcuno, fatto un voto, non lo mantiene, non lo ricercheranno.
35 They can neither save anyone from death nor rescue the weak from the strong,	35 Non libereranno un uomo dalla morte né sottrarranno il debole dal forte.
36 nor restore sight to the blind, nor save anyone in trouble,	36 Non renderanno la vista a un cieco, non libereranno l’uomo che è in difficoltà.
37 nor take pity on a widow, nor be generous to an orphan.	37 Non avranno pietà della vedova e non beneficheranno l’orfano.
38 These wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are about as much use as rocks cut out of themountain side. Their worshippers wil be confounded!	38 Sono simili alle pietre estratte dalla montagna quegli dèi di legno, d’oro e d’argento. Coloro che li servono saranno disonorati.
39 So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	39 Come dunque si può ritenere e dichiarare che essi sono dèi?
40 'The Chaldaeans themselves do them no honour; if they find someone who is dumb and cannot speak,they present him to Bel, entreating him for the gift of speech, as though he could perceive it!	40 Inoltre, persino gli stessi Caldei li disonorano; questi, infatti, quando vedono un muto incapace di parlare, lo presentano a Bel, pregandolo di farlo parlare, quasi che costui potesse capire.
41 And they are incapable of drawing the conclusion and abandoning those gods -- such is their lack ofperception.	41 Ma, pur rendendosene conto, non sono capaci di abbandonare gli dèi, perché non hanno senno.
42 Women with strings round their waists sit in the streets, burning bran like incense;	42 Le donne siedono per la strada cinte di cordicelle e bruciano della crusca.
43 when one of these has been picked up by a passer-by and been to bed with him, she then gloats overher neighbour for not having been thought as worthy as herself and for not having had her string broken.	43 Quando qualcuna di loro, tratta in disparte da qualche passante, si è coricata con lui, schernisce la sua vicina perché non è stata stimata come lei e perché la sua cordicella non è stata spezzata.
44 Whatever is done for them is spurious. So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	44 Tutto ciò che accade loro, è falso; dunque, come si può credere e dichiarare che essi sono dèi?
45 'Made by woodworkers and goldsmiths, they are only what those workmen decide to make them.	45 Essi sono stati costruiti da artigiani e da orefici; non diventano nient’altro che ciò che gli artigiani vogliono che siano.
46 Their makers have not long to live themselves, so how can the things they make be gods?	46 Coloro che li fabbricano non hanno vita lunga; come potrebbero le cose da essi fabbricate essere dèi?
47 Their legacy to their descendants is nothing but delusion and dishonour.	47 Essi hanno lasciato ai loro posteri menzogna e vergogna.
48 If war or disasters befal them, the priests discuss where best to hide themselves and these gods;	48 Difatti, quando sopraggiungono la guerra e i mali, i sacerdoti si consigliano fra loro dove potranno nascondersi insieme con i loro dèi.
49 how can anyone fail to realise that they are not gods, if they cannot save themselves from war or fromdisasters?	49 Come dunque è possibile non comprendere che non sono dèi coloro che non salvano se stessi né dalla guerra né dai mali?
50 And since they are only made of wood overlaid with gold or silver, it wil later become apparent thatthey are spurious; it wil be obvious to everyone, to nations as to kings, that they are not gods but the work ofhuman hands, and that there is no divine activity in them.	50 In merito a questo si riconoscerà che gli dèi di legno, d’oro e d’argento sono falsi; a tutte le nazioni e ai re sarà evidente che essi non sono dèi, ma opere degli uomini, e non c’è in loro nessuna opera di Dio.
51 Does anyone still need convincing that they are not gods?	51 A chi dunque non è evidente che essi non sono dèi?
52 'They can neither appoint a king over a country, nor give rain to humankind,	52 Essi infatti non potranno costituire un re sulla terra né concedere la pioggia agli uomini;
53 nor regulate their own affairs, nor rescue anyone who suffers a wrong; they are as helpless as crowsbetween sky and ground.	53 non risolveranno le contese né libereranno chi è offeso ingiustamente, poiché non hanno alcun potere. Sono come cornacchie fra il cielo e la terra.
54 If fire fal s on the temple of these wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests fly to safetywhile they for their part stay there like beams, to be burnt.	54 Infatti, se il fuoco si attacca al tempio di questi dèi di legno, d’oro e d’argento, mentre i loro sacerdoti fuggiranno e si metteranno in salvo, essi bruceranno là in mezzo come travi.
55 They cannot put up any resistance to a king or to enemies.	55 A un re e ai nemici non potranno resistere.
56 So how can anyone think or say that they are gods?	56 Come dunque si può ammettere e pensare che essi siano dèi?
57 'These wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver cannot evade thieves or marauders; strong men mayrob them of their gold and silver and make off with the robes they are dressed in; yet they are powerless to helpeven themselves.	57 Né dai ladri né dai briganti si salveranno questi dèi di legno, d’oro e d’argento, ai quali i ladri toglieranno l’oro e l’argento e le vesti che li avvolgevano, e fuggiranno; gli dèi non potranno aiutare neppure se stessi.
58 Better to be a king displaying his prowess, a household pot of use to its owner, than to be thesecounterfeit gods; or merely the door of a house, protecting what is inside, than these counterfeit gods; or awooden pil ar in a palace than these counterfeit gods.	58 Per questo è superiore a questi dèi bugiardi un re che mostri coraggio oppure un oggetto utile in casa, di cui si servirà chi l’ha acquistato; anche una porta, che tenga al sicuro quanto è dentro la casa, è superiore a questi dèi bugiardi, o persino una colonna di legno in un palazzo.
59 The sun, the moon and the stars, which shine and have been given work to do, are obedient;	59 Il sole, la luna, le stelle, essendo lucenti e destinati a servire a uno scopo, obbediscono volentieri.
60 similarly, the lightning, as it flashes, is a fine sight; in the same way, the wind blows across everycountry,	60 Così anche il lampo, quando appare, è ben visibile; anche il vento spira su tutta la regione.
61 the clouds execute the order God gives them to pass over the whole earth, and the fire, sent fromabove to consume mountain and forest, carries out its orders.	61 Quando alle nubi è ordinato da Dio di percorrere tutta la terra, esse eseguono l’ordine; il fuoco, inviato dall’alto per consumare monti e boschi, esegue l’ordine.
62 Now these gods are not their equals, either in beauty or in power.	62 Gli dèi invece non assomigliano, né per l’aspetto né per la potenza, a queste cose.
63 So, no one can think or say that they are gods, powerless as they are to administer justice or to doanyone any good.	63 Da questo non si deve ritenere né dichiarare che siano dèi, poiché non possono né rendere giustizia né beneficare gli uomini.
64 Therefore, knowing that they are not gods, do not be afraid of them.	64 Conoscendo dunque che essi non sono dèi, non temeteli!
65 'For they can neither curse nor bless kings,	65 Essi non malediranno né benediranno i re;
66 nor produce signs in heaven for the nations, nor shine like the sun, nor shed light like the moon.	66 non mostreranno alle nazioni segni nel cielo né risplenderanno come il sole né illumineranno come la luna.
67 The animals are better off than they are, being able to look after themselves by making for cover.	67 Le belve sono migliori di loro, perché possono fuggire in un riparo e aiutare se stesse.
68 There is not the slightest shred of evidence that they are gods; so do not be afraid of them!	68 Dunque, in nessuna maniera è evidente per noi che essi siano dèi; per questo non temeteli!
69 'Their wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are like a scarecrow in a field of cucumbers --protecting nothing.	69 Come infatti uno spauracchio che in un campo di cetrioli nulla protegge, tali sono i loro dèi di legno, d’oro e d’argento;
70 Or again, their wooden gods overlaid with gold and silver are like a thorn-bush in a garden -- any kind of bird may perch on it -- or like a corpse thrown out into the dark.	70 ancora, i loro dèi di legno, d’oro e d’argento si possono paragonare a un arbusto spinoso in un giardino, su cui si posa ogni sorta di uccelli, o anche a un cadavere gettato nelle tenebre.
71 From the purple and linen rotting on their backs you can tell that they are not gods; and in the end,eaten away, they wil be the dishonour of the country.	71 Dalla porpora e dal bisso che si logorano su di loro comprenderete che non sono dèi; infine saranno divorati e nel paese saranno una vergogna.
72 Better, then, someone upright who has no idols; dishonour wil never come near him.'	72 È migliore dunque un uomo giusto che non abbia idoli, perché sarà lontano dal disonore.
