Jeremiah 42

1 Then al the military leaders, in particular Johanan son of Kareah and Azariah son of Hoshaiah, and althe people from least to greatest, approached	1 ויגשו כל שרי החילים ויוחנן בן קרח ויזניה בן הושעיה וכל העם מקטן ועד גדול
2 the prophet Jeremiah and said, 'Please hear our petition and intercede with Yahweh your God for usand for al this remnant -- and how few of us are left out of many, your own eyes can see-	2 ויאמרו אל ירמיהו הנביא תפל נא תחנתנו לפניך והתפלל בעדנו אל יהוה אלהיך בעד כל השארית הזאת כי נשארנו מעט מהרבה כאשר עיניך ראות אתנו
3 so that Yahweh your God may show us the way we are to go and what we must do.'	3 ויגד לנו יהוה אלהיך את הדרך אשר נלך בה ואת הדבר אשר נעשה
4 The prophet Jeremiah replied, 'I hear you; I will indeed pray to Yahweh your God as you ask; andwhatever answer Yahweh your God gives you, I wil tel you, keeping nothing back from you.'	4 ויאמר אליהם ירמיהו הנביא שמעתי הנני מתפלל אל יהוה אלהיכם כדבריכם והיה כל הדבר אשר יענה יהוה אתכם אגיד לכם לא אמנע מכם דבר
5 They in their turn said to Jeremiah, 'May Yahweh be a true and faithful witness against us, if we do notfol ow the instructions that Yahweh your God sends us through you.	5 והמה אמרו אל ירמיהו יהי יהוה בנו לעד אמת ונאמן אם לא ככל הדבר אשר ישלחך יהוה אלהיך אלינו כן נעשה
6 Whether we like it or not, we shal obey the voice of Yahweh our God to whom we are sending you, sothat we may prosper by obeying the voice of Yahweh our God.'	6 אם טוב ואם רע בקול יהוה אלהינו אשר אנו שלחים אתך אליו נשמע למען אשר ייטב לנו כי נשמע בקול יהוה אלהינו
7 Ten days later the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah.	7 ויהי מקץ עשרת ימים ויהי דבר יהוה אל ירמיהו
8 He then summoned Johanan son of Kareah and al the military leaders who were with him, and al thepeople from least to greatest,	8 ויקרא אל יוחנן בן קרח ואל כל שרי החילים אשר אתו ולכל העם למקטן ועד גדול
9 and said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, to whom you deputed me to present your petition says this,	9 ויאמר אליהם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל אשר שלחתם אתי אליו להפיל תחנתכם לפניו
10 "If you wil only stay in this country, I shal build you and not overthrow you; I shal plant you and notuproot you, for I am sorry about the disaster I have inflicted on you.	10 אם שוב תשבו בארץ הזאת ובניתי אתכם ולא אהרס ונטעתי אתכם ולא אתוש כי נחמתי אל הרעה אשר עשיתי לכם
11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you fear now; do not fear him, Yahweh declares, for Iam with you to save you and rescue you from his clutches.	11 אל תיראו מפני מלך בבל אשר אתם יראים מפניו אל תיראו ממנו נאם יהוה כי אתכם אני להושיע אתכם ולהציל אתכם מידו
12 I shal take pity on you, so that he pities you and lets you return to your native soil.	12 ואתן לכם רחמים ורחם אתכם והשיב אתכם אל אדמתכם
13 But if you say: We will not stay in this country; if you disobey the voice of Yahweh your God,	13 ואם אמרים אתם לא נשב בארץ הזאת לבלתי שמע בקול יהוה אלהיכם
14 and say: No, Egypt is where we shal go, where we shall not see war or hear the trumpet-cal or goshort of food; that is where we want to live;	14 לאמר לא כי ארץ מצרים נבוא אשר לא נראה מלחמה וקול שופר לא נשמע וללחם לא נרעב ושם נשב
15 in that case, remnant of Judah, listen to Yahweh's word: Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this: Ifyou are determined to go to Egypt, and if you do go and settle there,	15 ועתה לכן שמעו דבר יהוה שארית יהודה כה אמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל אם אתם שום תשמון פניכם לבא מצרים ובאתם לגור שם
16 the sword you fear wil overtake you there in Egypt, and there you wil die.	16 והיתה החרב אשר אתם יראים ממנה שם תשיג אתכם בארץ מצרים והרעב אשר אתם דאגים ממנו שם ידבק אחריכם מצרים ושם תמתו
17 Yes, al those who are determined to go to Egypt and settle there, wil die by sword, famine andplague: not a single one of them wil survive or escape the disaster I shal inflict on them.	17 ויהיו כל האנשים אשר שמו את פניהם לבוא מצרים לגור שם ימותו בחרב ברעב ובדבר ולא יהיה להם שריד ופליט מפני הרעה אשר אני מביא עליהם
18 Yes, Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: Just as my furious anger was poured out on theinhabitants of Jerusalem, so wil my fury be poured out on you if you go to Egypt: you wil become an object ofexecration and horror, a curse, a laughing-stock; and you wil never see this place again."	18 כי כה אמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל כאשר נתך אפי וחמתי על ישבי ירושלם כן תתך חמתי עליכם בבאכם מצרים והייתם לאלה ולשמה ולקללה ולחרפה ולא תראו עוד את המקום הזה
19 Remnant of Judah, Yahweh has told you, "Do not go into Egypt." Understand clearly that today I havegiven you a solemn warning.	19 דבר יהוה עליכם שארית יהודה אל תבאו מצרים ידע תדעו כי העידתי בכם היום
20 You were not being sincere when you sent me to Yahweh your God and said, "Intercede for us withYahweh our God; tell us exactly what Yahweh our God says and we wil do it."	20 כי התעתים בנפשותיכם כי אתם שלחתם אתי אל יהוה אלהיכם לאמר התפלל בעדנו אל יהוה אלהינו וככל אשר יאמר יהוה אלהינו כן הגד לנו ועשינו
21 Today I have told you, but you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh your God or any part of themessage he sent me to give you.	21 ואגד לכם היום ולא שמעתם בקול יהוה אלהיכם ולכל אשר שלחני אליכם
22 So understand this clearly: you wil die by sword, famine and plague in the place where you want togo and settle.'	22 ועתה ידע תדעו כי בחרב ברעב ובדבר תמותו במקום אשר חפצתם לבוא לגור שם
