NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah son of Elishama, who was of royal descent, came with officers of the king and ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. And as they were taking theirmeal together, there at Mizpah,1 And it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ismahel the son of Nathanias, the son of Elisama of the royal blood, and the nobles of the king, and ten men with him, came to Godolias the son of Ahicam into Masphath: and they ate bread there together in Masphath.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah stood up with his ten men, and attacking Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son ofShaphan, with their swords, they kil ed the man whom the king of Babylon had made governor of the country.2 And Ismahel the son of Nathanias arose, and the ten men that were with him, and they struck Godolias the son of Ahicam, the son of Saphan with the sword, and slew him whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.
And al the Judaeans who were with him, that is with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldaean soldierswho happened to be there, Ishmael killed too.3 Ismahel slew also all the Jews that were with Godolias in Masphath, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the soldiers.
On the day after the murder of Gedaliah, before the news had become known,4 And on the second day after he had killed Godolias, no man yet knowing it,
eighty men arrived from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, with their beards shaved off, their clothing torn, and covered in self-inflicted gashes; they were bringing cereal offerings and incense with them to present to theTemple of Yahweh.5 There came some from Sichem, and from Silo, and from Samaria, fourscore men, with their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and mourning: and they had offerings and incense in their hand, to offer in the house of the Lord.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out of Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met themhe said, 'Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.'6 And Ismahel the son of Nathanias went forth from Masphath to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and when he had met them, he said to them: Come to Godolias, the son of Ahicam.
But once they were wel inside the town, Ishmael son of Nethaniah slaughtered them, with the help ofhis men, and had them thrown into the storage-wel .7 And when they were come to the midst of the city, Ismahel the son of Nathanias, slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he and the men that were with him.
There were ten of them, however, who said to Ishmael, 'Do not kil us: we have stocks of wheat andbarley, oil and honey, hidden away in the fields.' So he spared them and did not kil them with their brothers.8 But ten men were found among them, that said to Ismahel : Kill us not: for we have stores in the field, of wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. And he forbore, and slew them not with their brethren.
The storage-wel into which Ishmael threw the corpses of all the men he had kil ed was a large one, theone which King Asa had built as a precaution against Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled itwith the slaughtered men.9 And the pit into which Ismahel cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he slew because of Godolias, is the same that king Asa made, for fear of Baasa the king of Israel: the same did Ismahel the son of Nathanias fill with them that were slain.
Ishmael then took al the rest of the people prisoner who were at Mizpah, the king's daughters and althe remaining people in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan, commander of the guard, had entrusted to Gedaliah sonof Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them prisoner and set out, intending to cross over to the Ammonites.10 Then Ismahel carried away captive all the remnant of the people that were in Masphath : the king's daughters, and all the people that remained in Masphath: whom Nabuzardan the general of the army had committed to Godolias the son of Ahicam. And Ismahel the son of Nathanias took them, and he departed, to go over to the children of Ammon.
When Johanan son of Kareah and al the military leaders who were with him heard about al thecrimes committed by Ishmael son of Nethaniah,11 But Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the fighting men that were with him, heard of the evil that Ismahel the son of Nathanias had done.
they mustered all their men and set out to attack Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with himat the great Pool of Gibeon.12 And taking all the men, they went out to fight against Ismahel the son of Nathanias, and they found him by the great waters that are in Gabaon.
At the sight of Johanan son of Kareah and al the military leaders with him, al the people with Ishmaelwere delighted.13 And when all the people that were with Ismahel, had seen Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the fighting men that were with him, they rejoiced.
Al the people whom Ishmael had taken as prisoners from Mizpah turned about, went back and joinedJohanan son of Kareah.14 And all the people whom Ismahel had taken, went back to Masphath: and they returned and went to Johanan the son of Caree.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, however, escaped from Johanan with eight of his men and fled to theAmmonites.15 But Ismahel the son of Nathanias fled with eight men, from the face of Johanan, and went to the children of Ammon.
Johanan son of Kareah and al the military leaders with him then ral ied al the remaining peoplewhom Ishmael son of Nethaniah had taken as prisoners from Mizpah after kil ing Gedaliah son of Ahikam: men --fighting men-women, children and eunuchs, whom they brought back from Gibeon.16 Then Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the soldiers that were with him, took all the remnant of the people whom they had recovered from Ismahel the son of Nathanias, from Masphath, after that he had slain Godolias the son of Ahicam: valiant men for war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gabaon:
Setting off, they made a halt at Khan Kimham near Bethlehem, intending to go on to Egypt,17 And they departed, and sat as sojourners in Chamaam, which is near Bethlehem: in order to go forward, and enter into Egypt,
to get away from the Chaldaeans. They were now terrified of them, since Ishmael son of Nethaniahhad kil ed Gedaliah son of Ahikam whom the king of Babylon had made governor of the country.18 From the face of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ismahel the son of Nathanias had slain Godolias the son of Ahicam, whom the king of Babylon had made governor in the land of Juda.
