Jeremiah 4

1 'If you come back, Israel, Yahweh declares, if you come back to me, if you take your Horrors out of mysight, if you go roving no more,	1 «Se vuoi davvero ritornare, Israele, a me dovrai ritornare. Se vuoi rigettare i tuoi abomini, non dovrai più vagare lontano da me.
2 if you swear, "As Yahweh lives!" truthful y, justly, uprightly, then the nations wil bless themselves by him and glory in him.	2 Se giurerai per la vita del Signore, con verità, rettitudine e giustizia, allora le nazioni si diranno benedette in te e in te si glorieranno.
3 'For Yahweh says this to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, "Clear the ground that lies neglected, do notsow among thorns.	3 Infatti così dice il Signore agli uomini di Giuda e a Gerusalemme: Dissodatevi un terreno e non seminate fra le spine.
4 Circumcise yourselves for Yahweh, apply circumcision to your hearts, men of Judah and inhabitants ofJerusalem, or my wrath wil leap out like a fire and burn with no one to quench it, in return for the wickedness ofyour deeds." '	4 Circoncidetevi per il Signore, circoncidete il vostro cuore, uomini di Giuda e abitanti di Gerusalemme, perché la mia ira non divampi come fuoco e non bruci senza che alcuno la possa spegnere, a causa delle vostre azioni perverse.
5 Announce it in Judah, proclaim it in Jerusalem, say, 'Sound the trumpet in the countryside, shout themessage aloud: Mobilise! Take to the fortified towns!	5 Annunciatelo in Giuda, fatelo udire in Gerusalemme; suonate il corno nel paese, gridate a piena voce e dite: “Radunatevi ed entriamo nelle città fortificate”.
6 Signpost the way to Zion! Run! Do not delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, an immensecalamity.	6 Alzate un segnale verso Sion; cercate rifugio, non indugiate, perché io faccio venire dal settentrione una sventura e una grande rovina.
7 The lion is up from his thicket, the destroyer of nations is on his way, he has come from his home toreduce your land to a desert; your towns wil be in ruins, uninhabited.	7 Il leone è balzato dalla sua boscaglia, il distruttore di nazioni si è messo in marcia, è uscito dalla sua dimora, per ridurre la tua terra a una desolazione: le tue città saranno distrutte, non vi rimarranno abitanti.
8 So wrap yourselves in sackcloth, lament and wail, since Yahweh's burning anger has not turned awayfrom us.	8 Per questo vestitevi di sacco, lamentatevi e alzate grida, perché non si è allontanata da noi l’ira ardente del Signore.
9 'That day,' Yahweh declares, 'the king's heart will fail him, the princes' hearts wil fail them too, thepriests wil stand aghast, the prophets stupefied.'	9 E in quel giorno – oracolo del Signore – verrà meno il coraggio del re e il coraggio dei capi; i sacerdoti saranno costernati e i profeti saranno sbigottiti».
10 Then I said, 'Ah, Lord Yahweh, how sadly you deceived this people and Jerusalem when you used tosay, "You wil have peace," whereas the sword is now at our throats!	10 Allora io dissi: «Ah, Signore Dio, hai dunque del tutto ingannato questo popolo e Gerusalemme, quando dicevi: “Voi avrete pace”, mentre una spada giunge fino alla gola».
11 When that time comes, this wil be said to this people and to Jerusalem: The scorching wind from thedesert heights comes towards the daughter of my people -and not to winnow or to cleanse!	11 In quel tempo si dirà a questo popolo e a Gerusalemme: «Il vento ardente delle dune soffia dal deserto verso la figlia del mio popolo, ma non per vagliare, né per mondare il grano.
12 A gale of wind comes to me from over there. Now I myself shal pass sentence on them!'	12 Un vento minaccioso si alza per mio ordine. Ora, anch’io voglio pronunciare contro di loro la condanna».
13 Look, he is advancing like the clouds, his chariots like a hurricane, his horses swifter than eagles.Disaster for us! We are lost!	13 Ecco, egli sale come nubi e come un turbine sono i suoi carri, i suoi cavalli sono più veloci delle aquile. Guai a noi! Siamo perduti!
14 Wash your heart clean of wickedness, Jerusalem, and so be saved. How long wil you go onharbouring your pernicious thoughts?	14 Purifica il tuo cuore dalla malvagità, Gerusalemme, perché possa uscirne salva. Fino a quando abiteranno in te i tuoi pensieri d’iniquità?
15 For a voice from Dan shouts the news, proclaims disaster from the highlands of Ephraim.	15 Ecco, una voce reca la notizia da Dan, annuncia la sventura dalle montagne di Èfraim.
16 Report it to the nations, proclaim it to Jerusalem, 'Enemies are coming from a distant country, shoutingtheir war cry against the towns of Judah;	16 Annunciatelo alle nazioni, fatelo sapere a Gerusalemme: «I nemici vengono da una terra lontana, mandano urla contro le città di Giuda.
17 they surround her like watchmen round a field because she has rebel ed against me', Yahwehdeclares.	17 Come guardiani di un campo l’hanno circondata, perché si è ribellata contro di me». Oracolo del Signore.
18 'Your own behaviour and actions have brought this on yourself. Your wickedness, how bitter, hasstabbed you to the heart!'	18 La tua condotta e le tue azioni ti hanno causato tutto ciò. Com’è amara la tua malvagità! Ora ti penetra fino al cuore.
19 In the pit of my stomach how great my agony! Walls of my heart! My heart is throbbing! I cannot keepquiet, for I have heard the trumpet call, the battle cry.	19 Le mie viscere, le mie viscere! Sono straziato. Mi scoppia il cuore in petto, mi batte forte; non riesco più a tacere, perché ho udito il suono del corno, il grido di guerra.
20 Ruin on ruin is the news: the whole land is laid waste, my tents are suddenly destroyed, in one momental that sheltered me.	20 Si annuncia un disastro dopo l’altro: tutta la terra è devastata. A un tratto sono distrutte le mie tende, in un attimo i miei padiglioni.
21 How long must I see the standard and hear the trumpet cal ?	21 Fino a quando dovrò vedere segnali e udire il suono del corno?
22 'This is because my people are stupid, they do not know me, they are slow-witted children, they haveno understanding, they are clever enough at doing wrong, but do not know how to do right.'	22 «Stolto è il mio popolo: non mi conosce, sono figli insipienti, senza intelligenza; sono esperti nel fare il male, ma non sanno compiere il bene».
23 I looked to the earth -- it was a formless waste; to the heavens, and their light had gone.	23 Guardai la terra, ed ecco vuoto e deserto, i cieli, e non v’era luce.
24 I looked to the mountains -- they were quaking and al the hil s rocking to and fro.	24 Guardai i monti, ed ecco tremavano e tutti i colli ondeggiavano.
25 I looked -- there was no one at all, the very birds of heaven had al fled.	25 Guardai, ed ecco non c’era nessuno e tutti gli uccelli dell’aria erano volati via.
26 I looked -- the fruitful land was a desert, all its towns in ruins before Yahweh, before his burning anger.	26 Guardai, ed ecco il giardino era un deserto e tutte le sue città erano state distrutte dal Signore e dalla sua ira ardente.
27 Yes, Yahweh has said this, 'The whole country wil be laid waste, though I shall not annihilate itcompletely.	27 Poiché così dice il Signore: «Tutta la terra sarà devastata, ma non la distruggerò completamente.
28 For this, the earth wil go into mourning and the heavens above grow dark. For I have spoken, I havedecided, I shal not change my mind or go back on it.'	28 Pertanto la terra sarà in lutto e il cielo si oscurerà: l’ho detto e non mi pento, l’ho pensato e non ritratterò».
29 At the din of horseman and archer the entire city takes to flight: some plunge into the thickets, othersscale the rocks; every town is abandoned, not a single person is left there.	29 Per lo strepito di cavalieri e di arcieri tutti gli abitanti del paese sono in fuga, entrano nelle grotte, si nascondono nella folta boscaglia e salgono sulle rupi. Ogni città è abbandonata, nessuno più vi abita.
30 And, once despoiled, what are you going to do? You may dress yourself in scarlet, put on ornaments ofgold, enlarge your eyes with paint but you make yourself pretty in vain. Your former lovers disdain you, your lifeis what they are seeking.	30 E tu, devastata, che cosa farai? Anche se ti vestissi di scarlatto, ti adornassi di fregi d’oro e ti facessi gli occhi grandi con il bistro, invano ti faresti bella. I tuoi amanti ti disprezzano; essi vogliono la tua vita.
31 Yes, I hear screams like those of a woman in labour, anguish like that of a woman giving birth to herfirst child; they are the screams of the daughter of Zion, gasping, hands outstretched, 'Unhappy me! I am dying,the murderers have kil ed me!'	31 Sento un grido come di donna nei dolori, un urlo come di donna al primo parto; è il grido della figlia di Sion, che spasima e tende le mani: «Guai a me!
