Jeremiah 38

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 But Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son ofMalchiah heard the words which Jeremiah was saying to al the people,	1 Or Sefatìa, figlio di Mattàn, Godolia, figlio di Pascùr, Iucàl, figlio di Selemìa, e Pascùr, figlio di Malchìa, udirono queste parole che Geremia stava dicendo al popolo:
2 'Yahweh says this, "Anyone who stays in this city wil die by sword, famine or plague; but anyone wholeaves it and surrenders to the Chaldaeans wil live; he wil escape with his life.	2 "Così dice il Signore: Chi abita in questa città morrà di spada, di fame e di peste, ma chi uscirà verso i Caldei vivrà; la sua vita, cioè, sarà per lui come bottino, ma vivrà".
3 Yahweh says this: This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he willcapture it." '	3 Così dice il Signore: "Senza dubbio sarà consegnata questa città in mano dell'esercito del re di Babilonia e la conquisterà".
4 The chief men then said to the king, 'You must have this man put to death: he is unquestionablydisheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and al the people too, by talking like this. This man is seekingnot the welfare of the people but their ruin.'	4 Allora i prìncipi dissero al re: "Muoia quest'uomo, perché con questo discorso scoraggia le mani degli uomini di guerra che sono rimasti in questa città e le mani di tutto il popolo, proferendo loro tali parole. Quest'uomo infatti non cerca la pace per questo popolo bensì la sventura".
5 King Zedekiah answered, 'He is in your hands as you know, for the king is powerless to oppose you.'	5 Disse allora il re Sedecia: "Eccolo nelle vostre mani, perché il re non può alcunché contro di voi".
6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the storage-wel of the king's son Malchiah in the Court of theGuard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the storage-well, only mud, and into the mudJeremiah sank.	6 Presero allora Geremia e lo gettarono nella cisterna di Malchìa, figlio del re, la quale era nel cortile della guardia; calarono Geremia con le corde. Or nella cisterna non c'era acqua, bensì fango. Così Geremia affondò nel fango.
7 But Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch attached to the palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put intothe storage-wel . As the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,	7 Ebed-Melech, l'etiope, un eunuco che stava nella casa del re, ebbe notizia che avevano messo Geremia nella cisterna. Or, mentre il re stava seduto presso la Porta di Beniamino,
8 Ebed-Melech came out from the palace and spoke to the king.	8 Ebed-Melech uscì dalla casa del re e parlò al re così:
9 'My lord king,' he said, 'these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this:they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.'	9 "O re, mio signore: hanno agito male quegli uomini in tutto ciò che hanno fatto contro il profeta Geremia, gettandolo nella cisterna; egli morirà là dentro a causa della fame, poiché non c'è più pane nella città".
10 At this the king gave Ebed-Melech the Cushite the fol owing order: 'Take thirty men with you from hereand pul the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-wel before he dies.'	10 Allora il re ordinò a Ebed-Melech, l'etiope: "Prendi con te tre uomini ed estrai il profeta Geremia dalla cisterna prima che muoia".
11 Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the palace to the Treasury wardrobe; out of it hetook some torn, worn-out rags which he lowered on ropes to Jeremiah in the storage-wel .	11 Ebed-Melech prese gli uomini con sé e andò nella casa del re al di sotto della tesoreria, prese di là vesti lacere e stracci e li gettò a Geremia nella cisterna con le corde.
12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite then said to Jeremiah, 'These torn, worn-out rags are for you to put underyour armpits to pad the ropes.' Jeremiah did this.	12 Poi Ebed-Melech, l'etiope, disse a Geremia: "Metti queste vesti lacere e stracci sotto le tue ascelle, sopra le corde". Geremia fece così.
13 Then they hauled Jeremiah up with the ropes and pulled him out of the storage-wel . And Jeremiahstayed in the Court of the Guard.	13 Allora tirarono su Geremia con le corde e lo fecero salire dalla cisterna. Così Geremia restò nel cortile della guardia.
14 King Zedekiah had the prophet Jeremiah summoned to him at the third entrance to the Temple ofYahweh. 'I want to ask you for a word,' the king said to Jeremiah, 'keep nothing back from me.'	14 Quindi il re Sedecia mandò a prendere il profeta Geremia e lo fece venire presso di sé, al terzo ingresso della casa del Signore e gli disse: "Io voglio domandarti una cosa: non nascondermi nulla!".
15 Jeremiah answered Zedekiah, 'If I do proclaim it to you, are you not sure to have me put to death?And if I give you advice, you wil not listen to me.'	15 Geremia rispose a Sedecia: "Se io te la dico, non mi farai forse morire? E se io ti consiglio non mi ascolterai!".
16 King Zedekiah then secretly swore this oath to Jeremiah, 'As Yahweh lives, giver of this life of ours, Iwil have you neither put to death nor handed over to these men who are determined to kill you.'	16 Ma il re Sedecia giurò a Geremia in segreto: "Vivente è il Signore, che ci ha dato questa vita; non ti farò morire né ti consegnerò in mano di quegli uomini che cercano la tua vita!".
17 Jeremiah then said to Zedekiah, 'Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "If you go out andsurrender to the king of Babylon's generals, your life will be safe and this city will not be burnt down; you andyour family wil survive.	17 Allora Geremia disse a Sedecia: "Così dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, Dio di Israele: Se tu uscirai verso i capi del re di Babilonia, avrai salva la vita, questa città non sarà arsa con il fuoco e vivrai tu e la tua casa;
18 But if you do not go out and surrender to the king of Babylon's generals, this city wil be handed overto the Chaldaeans and they wil burn it down; nor wil you yourself escape their clutches." '	18 ma se non uscirai verso i capi del re di Babilonia, allora questa città sarà consegnata in mano dei Caldei e l'arderanno col fuoco; tu non scamperai dalle loro mani".
19 King Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'I am afraid of the Judaeans who have already gone over to theChaldaeans: I might be handed over to them and they would il -treat me.'	19 Il re Sedecia disse a Geremia: "Io temo i Giudei che sono passati ai Caldei, temo che mi consegnino nelle loro mani e si sfoghino contro di me".
20 'You wil not be handed over to them,' Jeremiah replied. 'Please listen to Yahweh's voice as I haverelayed it to you, and then al wil go wel with you and your life wil be safe.	20 Geremia rispose: "Non ti consegneranno! Ascolta, tuttavia, la voce del Signore in ciò che io ti sto per dire, affinché ti vada bene e abbia salva la vita;
21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what Yahweh has shown me:	21 ma se tu rifiuti di uscire, questo è ciò che mi ha mostrato il Signore.
22 the sight of al the women left in the king of Judah's palace being led off to the king of Babylon'sgenerals and saying: "They have misled you, they have triumphed over you, those friends of yours! Your feethave sunk in the mud! They are up and away!"	22 Ecco: tutte le donne che sono rimaste nella casa del re di Giuda saranno condotte ai capi del re di Babilonia ed esse canteranno: "Ti han sedotto e han prevalso su di te gli uomini di tua fiducia; affondarono i piedi tuoi nella melma e poi si voltarono indietro!".
23 'Yes, al your wives and children wil be led off to the Chaldaeans, and you yourself wil not escapetheir clutches but wil be a prisoner in the clutches of the king of Babylon. And as for this city, it wil be burntdown.'	23 Tutte le tue donne, poi, e i tuoi figli saranno condotti verso i Caldei, ma tu non scamperai dalle loro mani. Sì, in mano del re di Babilonia sarai consegnato e sarà bruciata con il fuoco questa città".
24 Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'Do not let anyone else hear these words or you wil die.	24 Disse allora Sedecia a Geremia: "Nessuno sappia queste parole, così tu non morrai.
25 If the chief men hear that I have been talking to you, and come and say, "Tel us what you said to theking and what the king said to you; keep nothing back from us, or we shal put you to death,"	25 E se i prìncipi avranno sentore che io ho parlato con te e verranno da te e ti diranno: "Riferisci ciò che hai detto al re, senza nasconderci nulla, affinché non ti facciamo morire, e ciò che il re ha detto a te",
26 you must reply, "I presented this request to the king: that he would not have me sent back toJonathan's house to die." '	26 allora dirai loro: "Sono andato a deporre la mia supplica dinanzi al re perché non mi faccia ritornare alla casa di Gionata per non morirvi".
27 And in fact al the chief men came to Jeremiah and questioned him. He told them exactly what theking had ordered him to say. They then left him in peace, since the conversation had not been overheard.	27 Vennero, infatti, tutti i prìncipi da Geremia e l'interrogarono, ma egli rispose loro esattamente quelle parole che il re gli aveva ordinato; perciò lo lasciarono tranquillo perché non si seppe nulla della conversazione.
28 And Jeremiah stayed in the Court of the Guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And he wasthere when Jerusalem actual y was captured.	28 Così Geremia restò nel cortile della guardia fino al giorno in cui fu conquistata Gerusalemme.
